Georges St. Pierre Answers UFC Departure Rumors
Posted by Dustin James on 07.25.2008

UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre recently appeared on MMAWeekly Radio and addressed the rumors of him leaving the UFC when his current contract is up:

"I'm with the UFC, I have two more fights on my contract, and you know we're in negotiations. Everything is going well, you know. We're talking and everything is good. We'll end up to an agreement, I'm sure. I like the UFC, I'm glad I'm champion, I want to represent the sport and also the UFC well. The UFC, that's what made me known, and if possible I want to retire there."

The UFC would be stupid to let St. Pierre go. His fights print money.

Thankfully, we at least know he won't be leaving to fight Fedor to prove the top of the P4P list.

I think it's safe to say that he's seen the pay-outs for "Banned" and can't be happy knowing that Tim and Arlovski made 4.5-5 times more then GSP normally does in a fight.

THey'll pay him. And they'll pay him a lot.

I wouldn't mind seeing GSP-Fedor - but it would be about as credible as Fedor-Lindland. There's two full weight classes between them - forget even a catchweight fight.

GSP-Spider... now you're talking.

GSP vs. Silva... it'd be a slaughter.

Nothing against GSP, but Silva would destroy him. There is just too much of a size difference between the two.

Even at a catch-weight, Silva is just too good at his weight cutting skills and would have little issue dropping the extra few pounds- while GSP, being a WW for so long, may have issue putting on any extra weight (and still maintain his cardio).

Unless weigh-ins are changed to 2 hours pre-fight, there is simply no chance for GSP to compete against Silva without giving up a significant amount of size and strength.

As it's currently set up, they'd weigh the same the day before... but the next day entering the cage there'd easily be a 20-25lb difference.

It will be interesting to see how much the Banned payouts actually affect things. So many guys were overpaid - good for them, but it may cause Affliction to crash and burn.

Of course guys like Sylvia, Arlovski and Rothwell probably don't care if it crashes, because they can always sign with UFC or EXC for decent money down the road.

Besides - who would GSP actually fight outside the UFC?
