EliteXC Denies Paying Seth Petruzelli To Stand With Kimbo Slice
Posted by Dustin James on 10.06.2008

Seth Petruzelli (who knocked out Kimbo Slice in just 14 second at Saturday night's EliteXC "Heat" event) was a guest on "The Monster In the Morning Show" on 104.1FM in Orlando, Florida earlier today and had the following to say about EliteXC offering him more money if he would keep the fight with Kimbo standing:

"My original plan was to throw out push kicks -- they're called ‘teeps. Throw out push kicks, have him think that I'm going to throw them to try to rush in more and then shoot in on him obviously. I knew I would do all right, actually, standing up with him, but the promoters kind of hinted to me and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him. They didn't want me to take him down -- let's just put it that way. It was worth my while to try to stand up and punch with him."

EliteXC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen had the following to say to Sherdog.com about Petruzelli's comments:

"Obviously we didn't pay [Petruzelli] to stand. Kimbo had trained for months to fight a guy who's fighting on the ground. We don't care if people stand or take people down or what. It doesn't matter to us. All we want is an exciting fight."

Petruzelli later sat down with FiveOuncesOfPain.com and elaborated on his words from earlier:

"What was meant to be said was that I wanted to keep the fight standing for myself because I knew that was what the crowd, the promoters, and everyone wanted to see because that's more exciting than just taking someone to the ground. That was my thing only. I wanted to keep it exciting, so I decided to keep it standing. It had nothing to do with anybody else. That was all me."

its mma not boxing. EliteXc sucks balls if they were smart they would hurry up and sign Tito Ortiz. Milk him for all he is worth and Kem Shamrock.

14 seconds from bell to bell, gonna say at least 3-4 was the "close in on each other part" say 1 for kimbo to this the ground and the rest was waiting for the ref to step in. I dont think he had time to keep it standing, the first flurry put him on the ground

They are right... people do want an amazing fight.. and Kimbo getting owned and exposed was the highlight of the night.

I hope the embarrassment that is Kimbo Slice is over, and he can go back to street fighting.

First off, this is true, you just know it. Second, Kimbo didnt want to take this fight. XC basically had to pay him more money to fight someone whos name wasent Ken Shamrock. So all that"Kimbo is a warrior who will fight anyone" crap isnt true, but anyone with any sense knew that. Can you stomach the fact he made 500K for that 14 seconds!!

Now I know why Hulk Hogan referred to MMA as a 'worked shoot'.

Doesn't really nohow. Despite the fact that even Gina Carano could probably smoke Kimbo (and to all you dirty minds out there, not referring to Slice's cigar), his loss to Petruzelli will be deemed a "fluke," he'll still be pushed on the fans as EXC's "Poster Boy" and will still be make making more money per fight than what guys likes Fedor, Machida, and Evans make an entire year combined. Makes you wonder, eh?

MMA is suffering. Ulitmate fighter is getting its worse ratings ever. This travesty sat. night. There needs to be some form of action to keep these sideshow acts from running up the ladder to fast.

I interviewed Kimbo Slice last night and he claims he was paid to take the loss. He told me EliteXC believes more people will tune in now to see Seth fight instead.

Dear Elite XC,

Attempting to fix a fight or influence the outcome in any way shape or form, is just wrong.

Sincerely,

I don't think he was saying that the promoters paid him some sort of bonus specifically to stand and trade punches with Kimbo. When he said that the promoters "gave me the money to stand and trade with him," it sounds to me as if he's saying, "I knew what the promoters hoping to give the fans by putting up the money for this fight: someone brawling with Kimbo Slice. I tried to give them their money's worth."

MMA is suffering because its following the same path as just about everything else that suffers. Over saturation. People are getting sick of it now that it is EVERYWHERE! I mean there are like 2 seasons of the Ultimate Fighter each year. UFC fight nights, Elite XC and now crap on the VS network like Chuck Norris's new promotion, people have no idea what to watch anymore because its everywhere

Ahhhh I knew it wouldnt be long before the MMA world started acting like its boxing counterparts. Bunch of know nothing THUGS.

Give me pro wrestling any day, granted the outcomes are scripted but you have to have a BRAIN in order to be any GOOD at it. All MMA and boxing takes is alot of muscle and a complete disregard for life and limb. Fn meatheads.
