Georges St. Pierre Comments On Possible Fight With Anderson Silva
Posted by Dustin James on 10.11.2008

During a recent interview with MMAWeekly.com, UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre discussed his upcoming fight with BJ Penn, as well as a possible fight with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva:

On his fight with BJ Penn at UFC 94 in January:

"I'm a different fighter than I used to be. And he is as well. This time, I want to take him out. I don't want to go to a decision. I want to finish him."

On a possible fight with Anderson Silva:

"A lot of people have been challenging me so far. I have a lot of friends at 185. To tell you the truth, I'm not afraid of challenging nobody at 185. I'm very confident in myself.

"I think I can do pretty well (against Silva). I think I'm a different fighter than all the guys who have fought him in the past. There's only one way to find out.

"It's a fight that everybody wants to see, including myself."

I think Pierre can take silva down at will and work his ground and pound without problem. Pierre is very good at recongnizing and escaping submissions and his ground control could give him the win. Takedown defense is silva's weakness and Pierre could have a field day with that.

Does GSP realize that Anderson Silva doesn't weigh just 185... Anderson is a LHW who can cut an insanely tremendous amount of weight for weigh ins.

For as good as GSP may be, Silva is 5" taller and has a good 20-25lb weight advantage (possibly more depending on how much or little GSP can cut). When Silva fought in LHW, it wasn't like he gained weight to do it- he just didn't cut as much... and losing weight for Silva to fight at a catch-weight would be much, much easier then GSP trying to bulk more.

...and of course- there are still plenty of WW fighters out there waiting for their shot at the belt. As it is, George, you're putting the belt on hold for almost a year just so you can face Penn. Now you want to put it on hold longer? At least Silva is fighting every 3 months and has cleared out his division... what have you done? You've had only 1 successful title defense.

cyst,
Have you actually been watching ufc for the last year. GSP has fought four times in the last year and Anderson Silva has fough about the same. Silva even took time out of defending his middleweight title to fight at LHW. The welterweight title was put on hold by UFC to promote Matt Hughes and Matt Serra for the Ultimate Fighter. Plus BJ Penn is doing the same thing in lightweight division. This is total crap because there is more fighter in the lightweight division to clear out than the welterweight. In my opinion, they out need to stick to there division until the lose their belts. Problem Solve

YES!!! This is the fight I want to see more than any other "dream" fight. Way more than GSP v Penn, and even a bit more than Fedor v Couture

Yes, they've fought about the same amount of times this past year... so? Silva has defended his belt non-stop since he won it 2 years ago clearing out his entire division. GSP has had 1 successful title defense and he's put his title on hold for (at least) 9 months so he could face Penn.

The UFC putting the belt on hold for TUF didn't effect GSP (since he wasn't the champ)... if anything it helped him since he was able to step up when Serra got injured.
