Dana White Comments On Strikeforce And Gina Carano
Posted by Dustin James on 10.30.2008

In an article over on USAToday.com, UFC President Dana White gave his opinion on the Strikeforce on NBC show as well as Gina Carano:

On Strikeforce On NBC:

"I hope they do 10 million viewers next week. Have you heard me say a bad word about Strikeforce? I wish them all the luck in the world. I have nothing bad to say about guys who are running the right promotion."

On Gina Carano:

"Gina Carano's a talented fighter. She's a star. She should've been the main event (on CBS' last EliteXC broadcast). My thing with women and fighting is there isn't enough good women to create a whole division. Could I do some one-off fights here and there? Yeah, but that's not really what we do."

Wow, Dana in a good mood.

No its that Dana recognizes that Strickforce is the one other promotion that has been smart. The don't dump cash but have some decent fighters but they stay in the same area and build up a audience. How long did it take UFC to start to travel. Strickforce is the only other american promotion to turn a profit and last.

Women in the WEC - make it happen Dana!

Dana weird, positive then next day turn into negative but do he really know what he talk about?

Personally, I think Dana White either does not realize the position he's in, or doesn't at this time want to use his position to assist in the blossoming of MMA by making women's MMA more visible.

When I talk about the position Dana White is in, I mean he has the resources and the know-how to make a real women's division. If the ratings for The Ultimate Fighter get too low by being based on the coaches and the antics of the housemates, you know what would be GUARANTEED to pop ratings? A season featuring female fighters. There aren't enough good female MMA fighters for a division? Then CREATE them! There are female boxers, jiu-jitsu practitioners, wrestlers, and kickboxers out there. Pick a couple of coaches, find 32 women to train, and have at it. Obviously, there'd be some tense moments (c'mon, I don't think it's sexist to say there'd be some drama with a bunch of women cooped up in a house together-- same goes for the men every season). Dana White could do all this fairly easily, and it'd instantly get ratings on TV and help women's MMA look more legitimate.

Also, I think the best place for these women's MMA fighters to fight regularly would be WEC. It concentrates on lower weight classes anyway, and making women's MMA exclusive to WEC gives that promotion another "hook", and gives female MMA more visibility than it has now without giving it so much it'd draw a whole lot of ire without bringing more attention to the UFC's sister promotion.

Remember, there weren't a lot of "good" mixed martial artists in the early days of the sport. The sport blossomed. Female MMA would have the advantage of already having a blueprint in place.

(Bills is about to cut tomorrow, I think) I agree with you "NDN" Anyway.. I don't want joke comment anymore... Tired.... people seem ignore me, I think... so.... hope that women could allow in UFC someday but what I feel is I don't think Dana would allow because there not enough women that good fighter and strong like Gina & Cyborg, these girl have much talent.. We know Gina vs Cyborg probably won't happen beca of EliteXC closed. So could be strikeforce allow women? Could be Japan pride? Could be 10% UFC allow? Will see.... anyway, btw. Everyone, please pray Sharon Osbourne- she have caner, Patrick Sycwartz - he have cancer too, please pray me because I have serious disease, doctor couldn't remove but... it okay... No one live forever anyway.... if you don't want pray me or whatever, just remember.. Everyone will died include UFC, Boxing, EltieXC & hollywood Star.. What I wish is become Voodoo, I hear rumor that Voodoo never died and will live forever. Did you see Cris Angel!? He will live forever because he have power to magic.

NDN: That's a great idea about a female "Ultimate Fighter". If Dana has any imagination at all, he'll have Carano coach one team, Cyborg coach the other team and we get our Carano/Cyborg fight at the end.

AH-CAN-TALK: come back when you either learn English or take a typing class. Your spelling and grammer need serious help.

It's quite the opposite. Dana realizes exactly the position he's in- which is why he's avoiding women.

Dana runs the largest organization out there and if he were to present women, he would be scrutinized and put under a harsher microscope then anyone else ever would.

EliteXC pushed freakshows, so they could get away with anything. Dana can't.

Many people still feel MMA is too brutal... proof is that it still can't get licenses in many states. Having women fight would not help their cause.

Not to mention, not enough people enjoy watching women fight- for various reasons.

Women's boxing has been around much longer- yet who watches it? ... or the WNBA... or the LPGA... the only sports with women that people watch are tennis and beach volleyball.

It doesn't mean I agree with it- but that is how it is.

I think NDN is on the right path. Plus, the coaches are right there in front of Dana White.

16 women in the house. Gina and Cyborg as coaches. With bankruptcy pending I'd bet UFC could pick up the EXC tape library for a song and be on the way.

Cyks Posted : "Not to mention, not enough people enjoy watching women fight- for various reasons."

If that were the case, then how come the Carano EXC fights were reportedly the highest viewed out of the entire card (despite EXC promoting Kimbo the vast majority)? The issue isn't there being a lack of interest, but rather noone really pushing the envelope in promotion (or those who are willing have limited funds). If Dana wanted open a women's division in UFC and push Carano as it's Silva or Liddell he could.

I've said it a billion times, but if you are going to insult someone based on their typed words... At least make sure you spell your insults correctly.. It is grammar, not grammer

It wasn't the most watched fight- Seth vs. Kimbo was.

It was also, as I mentioned, a freakshow event and Gina was pushed as such.

Would Gina and Cyborg really be good coaches? They have both had 7 fights. I do like the idea of a womens TUF, and starting a division in WEC though.

I've been to just about every SmackGirl event for the last 3 years. There is plenty of talent out there.
Megumi Fujii > Gina Carano (I know they are different weights, I mean talent)

I know AH-CAN-TALK (final "maybe") is writing for attention but that has got to be one of the most random posts I've seen on 411mania.
