Jon Fitch Back WIth The UFC
Posted by Dustin James on 11.20.2008

UFC President Dana White announced on Wednesday that he had released UFC welterweight Jon Fitch and will no longer do business with anyone from American Kickboxing Academy team in San Jose, California or anyone represented by DeWayne Zinkin and Bob Cook. He had the following to say to Fitch:

"We're looking for guys who want to work with us and not against us, and frankly I'm just so fucking sick of this shit it's not even funny.

"Affliction is still out there trying to build its company. Let [Fitch] go work with them. Let him see what he thinks of those fucks. Fuck him. These guys aren't partners with us. Fuck them. All of them, every last fucking one of them."

Fitch later revealed that the dispute was over his reluctance to sign a lifetime contract and to allow his name and likeness to be used in the upcoming UFC video game:

"Working for free and selling our rights away for lifetime, that's a little different. We tried to negotiate five- or 10-year deals with them, but it wasn't good enough. It was all or nothing. He wanted our lifetime. He wanted our souls forever.

"He wanted us to sign that merchandising agreement, and it was not a very good agreement. There was not really a reason for us to sign it. The first thing they brought to us was for us to sign all of our rights away for everything forever. It was for very small compensation, and there was no compensation for family members if we were to die.

"We could die and they could make memorial figurines and stuff and make thousands, millions of dollars, and our families wouldn't see a penny of it. The way they bring the contracts and stuff to us, I don't know, it's just not how business is done."

However, it is now being reported by MMARated.com that Jon Fitch has indeed signed the deal and is back with the UFC. His UFC 94 bout with Akihiro Gono is back on and he will appear in the UFC video game to be released next year.

honestly lifetime deals mean nothing, people in sports have always sued and gotten out of it.

i can understand not wanting to go through the trouble, but when it comes down to it, lifetime deals are more or less illegal. so while the signing happens, when they want to get out they can get out.

I think fitch and co misunderstood what the deal was. The merchandising needed some work I'll agree on that. But the video game it just licenses his name for the game so 10 20 years he cant come back and go you owe me money for the Game sales. I dont think it forbid him from doing other stuff if he was released. NBA NFL WWE TNA its common practice. I think dana's hot head made things harder than they needed to be. But I havent read the contract so I cant say for sure but its what it sounds like. Fighters Have to be involved as their management is not always forthcoming on what was said. Dana needs to delagate some as its seemed he was working hard hadnt had any sleep and just got feed up with negotiating and flipped out like he does. Hopefully both parties will come togather and work something out.

Wow, way to stand up for your ideals, Fitch. You complain about being asked to sign a deal that would have forced you to give up fundamental marketing and merchandising rights to THQ and UFC for the rest of your life...then you go and sign it anyway.

What a freaking joke.
