BJ Penn Will Defend Both Titles If He Defeats Georges St. Pierre

Penn looking to make history......
According to UFC President Dana White, if BJ Penn defeats Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Title at UFC 94 in January, he will defend both titles:
"Once you win the title and you accomplish so many things in the fight business, then it becomes about legendary status, making your mark, going down as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
"The problem I always talk about with B.J. is trying to contain this kid and keep him focused on staying at 155 and defending his title there. He's been doing that. And I think now is the time. Now is a great time. He's saying if he wins the 170-pound title, he's going to defend both titles.
"Should B.J. win, one of the things he would do is defend two titles at the same time. Nobody has ever done that. It's never been done."

BJ's a stoner so he's cool in my book
Not as cool as GSP though.
It's my number 1 fighter vs my number 2
OH GAWD

If he can actually beat GSP then kudos to him. That's an if though.

I still want to see Bj vs Urijah Faber, and know I don't care that he got caught with a shot against Mike Brown. That fight would be amazing!

Don't you worry
IF b.j wins he'll be losing the title ASAP to florian
So he would only need to defend the 170 title

2 titles in the same night?
Right..

If he has both belts, wouldn't fights at 155 HAVE to be for both belts, after all being under 155 means you are under 170, or do you have to be over 155 to be a welterweight?
Either way, BJ is out to make UFC history, which is awesome, though I see GSP winning anyway.

As much as I respect BJ as a fighter, he is just too much the smaller man to really copmete with GSP. Gsp walks around stronger and heavier at any given time. Bj should stay at 155 where the competition is solid, as I think Florian would give him (or any other 155er) a serious run for their money. On the other hand, it would be very impressive if BJ were to beat GSP at 170. Since I live in Vegas, I would put GSP a 3-1 favorite to defend his title. At any rate GO UFC!!!!

BJ fights, on average, 2 times a year... a trend I can't see getting any better if he has to gain/ loose 15 lbs between each fight.
If he somehow wins the GSP fight, that means we'll only get 1 title defense a year for each of the titles.
I'd assume KenFlo would get first shot at him - probably sometime in June and Thiago might get a title shot sometime next Nov.... or more then likely at next years NYE PPV.
Way to hold up 2 stacked divisions.

As much as I like BJ and dislike St.Pierre, I'm really pulling for Georges to win this fight. That way, there's no excuse for a third fight, and both the Lightweight and Welterweight divisions can get back on course.
And after watching UFC 91, BJ better hope the 6-7 month layoff puts some rust on Kenny Florian because he looked even more dominant on Joe Stevenson than BJ himself did.

If gsp looks past or has too much respect for Penn it could be trouble. But I think GSP has matured enough that this shouldnt be an issues. Its not like he wouldnt defend both titles if he won in the first place noone has mentioned striping him so this is more common sense and not really news. Well anytime Dana doesnt curse I guess it is news, later you f@cker$.

Im callin it,bj by submission, where does george like to take the fight, the ground.Where is bj at his best, the ground. And yes i know george won the first fight but i cant see him lying on bj a second time round without being caught

I really dislike how long UFC lets(makes) some champs go between title fights. A champ should need to defend his belt every 4 months, that way there could be a title fight every PPV spreading out the champs. No reason why Sera was champ for almost a year because of TUF without a defense.

impossible i believe welterweight is 156-170 and since you have to weigh 155 or less for a lightweight title fight its not gonna be sanctioned. no athletic commision would allow a 15 lbs weight difference. bj's talking to hear himself speak.

sorry my comment was made thinking that bj meant that he'd defend it in the same fight. my bad

Than why isn't he defending his title against GSP ? The marque' says Champion Vs Champion but only GSP's title is on the line !!!
If he was any sort of man he would defend his title as well !
I guess Penn is afraid GSP will take his title and than own both squashing any ideas he had at doing it first !

Oh and this also caught my attention:
"Should B.J. win, one of the things he would do is defend two titles at the same time"
So BJ is supposed to make weight at 170, defend his title against Alves, then go backstage, go to the sauna, cut more weight, go back in time to the previous day so he could attend the weigh ins again, to weigh in at 155 pounds, then go back to the future to the next night and defend the lightweight title against Floria...
Right, sounds very doable.

Its simple really, he defends the 155 title then when he wins his ego would be so inflated he would balloon up to 170.

I really had no problem with Penn cutting in line at welterweight to fight GSP, but if he wins then he really should have to relinquish one of the belts. There's already a long enough time between title fights in both divisions, that situation will grow far worse if Penn has two belts.

I dont think weight's an issue. BJ'll just defend the LW title like normal, and all of his WW title defenses would be at an upper limit of 170. Simple.
A weight class is not from one weight to the other, its only an upper limit.
I know, Ive had to wrestle up a weight class in more than a few matches last year
