Jeff Monson Could Be Headed Back To The UFC
Posted by Dustin James on 12.15.2008

During this week's episode of "MMA Live" on ESPN.com, Ryan Hockensmith mentioned that heavyweight fighter Jeff Monson is currently planning to fight once more for World Victory Road's "Sengoku" in Japan and then he will more than likely return to the UFC:

"If Monson wins (over Ricco Rodriguez this past Saturday), he'll fight once more in Sengoku in Japan. Then he expects to return to the UFC. He's had a lot of conversations with them."

Monson was victorious over former UFC heavyweight champion Rodriguez at the Mixed Fighting Alliance card this past Saturday in Miami. Monson last fought for the UFC in November of 2006 when he faced Tim Sylvia for the UFC Heavyweight Title. He lost the fight via unanimous-decision and then asked for his release from the UFC shortly after. Since leaving the UFC, Monson has gone 5-2 with wins over Rodriguez, Kazuyuki Fajita, and Mark Kerr.

Welcome back hopefully ya big pinko. Just kidding on the pinko part Jeff Monson is a really great guy. I had the fortune or mis fortune you could say of getting my ass handed too me by him at a grappling torney once. We talked after though he's a very intelligent and friendly person. Ricco also I met once back when he was still with Rigan Machado and while he's no longer still at the top of his game its good to see he's still competing heres to hoping Ricco finds his old self he's also a great guy and a great teacher.

A friend of mine also had the opportunity to grapple Monson. My friend, who is strong as an ox, held his own, but eventually was gassed out by the much older Monson.

I also heard that Monson was a true gentleman in person.

Here's hoping he comes back. His stand up game has improved tremendously since the Tim-MEH fight, and I've always like Jeff Monson. No idea why really, but there's no allowing for taste I guess.

I'm another with nothing but praise for 'the Snowman'... I'm always amazed how the big little guy deals with comparable giants.

There's just something about a 5'9" guy fighting (and usually holding his own) against guys 6'3"+

Moving to the UFC would be a good idea for him now- he's getting old (37) and probably only has 1 more run for the belt left in him.

Nog vs Monson is great fight on paper based on their styles, though I think Nog would just box him on the feet if they actually met up.
