Dana White Confirms Title Shot For Yushin Okami
Posted by Dustin James on 12.30.2008

UFC President Dana White has confirmed that UFC middleweight Yushin Okami has earned a shot at the UFC Middleweight Title after his unanimous-decision victory over Dean Lister at UFC 92. UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva is currently set to face Thales Leites for the title in April with the winner of that fight expected to face Okami in late-2009. Okami is the last man to defeat Anderson Silva. He defeated Silva via DQ due to an illegal kick back in January 2006.

Hardly a victory if you were knocked out by an illegal upkick, no?

Does White have it in for Silva or something? All due respect to Leites and Okami, but it seems like this is hardly going to be an exciting year for the Middleweight Champion.

i don't think you can blame dana white for the lack of competition for anderson silva in that middleweight division....if anything, blame silva for being that dominate of a fighter that there are virtually no viable middleweight contenders left.

It's not Dana White's fault Anderson Silva has basically cleaned out the most stacked middleweight division in MMA. White can only do so much when you have a champion who has stopped all comers and except for one stopped all of them within two rounds.

I'm sure Silva wants to fight Okami again anyway, since Silva was angry at what he perceived to be Okami's unnecessary acceptance of a cheap victory. Anderson Silva felt Okami could have continued in that fight but didn't just to get a "W".

Silva has never avenged any of his losses. It's about time Dana put this together.

Agreed. Not to mention This fight is the only fight in the middleweight division that can have a story built around it. Last guy to beat the best pound for pound fighter in the world? Boring fighter or not, He can bring a world of hype to this fight.

Bad. This is really, really bad. Irvin, Cote, Leites, Okami...not one of these guys is even close to being a top contender. Why they keep feeding Silva sub-par opponents is beyond me. Why they would announce this match up now, when Silva/Leites, an equally stupid match up, doesn't even have a set date, aswell.

Dana keeps justifieing Silva's No1 p4p status with Fedor's failure to fight top competition. By the time this fight is in the books, it will have been 1 1/2 years since Silva fought top competition in Hendo. At the moment the only guys that should be in contention for a title shot are, in my opinion, Henderson, Marquardt, Maia and Bisping.

Furthermore this fight won't draw shit. You think a win over the champ due to the reception of an illegal ass-kicking is a compelling story? Yeah, quit fooling yourself...

Anyone notice how much shit Silva and the UFC is taking because he is so dominant, the MW division isn't weak in the UFC, the Spider is just that dominant,
that's like saying any LHW that strings together a bunch of wins should face Fedor or Lesner,

People fight in weight classes because it is their weight class, we're actively trying to create handicapps for Silva so in our eyes he'll have competition. And people aren't even giving credit to Silva for that fact, they're calling it a weak division,
Headline, Silva just makes others look bad. If he wasn't fighting, then each remaining fighter in the MW would be the rampage's, wanderlei's, and rashad's.

it's a shame that people feel Silva has so much to prove still even though he's single handedly decimated all opponents in his weight class. Give him his recognition and bring on the next MW!
