UFC Veteran Jeff Monson Arrested
Posted by Dustin James on 01.15.2009

According to The Olympian, a newspaper in Washington State, UFC veteran Jeff Monson has been arrested and is charged with first degree malicious mischief for spraying an anarchy symbol on a state capitol building in Washington. He is now being charged with a Class B felony and faces a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Monson has mentioned that the graffiti was an act of protest against the economic disparities between the rich and poor and the war in Iraq.

You know, I like Monson's fighting style; I hope to seem him back in the UFC title mix again. I also probably agree with SOME of his points of view on the economy and war.

However his "protest against the economic disparities" loses its meaning when his method of protest is just graffiti, which is not a well known way of solving any problem. I know he's not Bill-Gates-Rich or "dirt poor", but I'm wondering how much he knows what the poor is dealing with right now. He may indeed be well informed, but I still wonder.

Since Monson is semi-famous (in some circles), he should do like Matt Lindland and run for a public office. Sure Lindland didn't win, but he tried and voiced his platform in the process. But wait, if Monson did that he would be participating in democracy which means he's no longer an "anarchist", which apparently, not because of this incident alone, is a synonym for "one who spray paints".

The image of him and the spraypainted symbol also recently appeared in an issue of ESPN The Magazine in which he was profiled.

I saw that same article in ESPN Mag... I wonder if they arrested him based solely on that? Very interesting.

I've got to give Monson credit - when I read the headline, I shook my head and said, "Oh, no, what now?" thinking that another MMA practicioner had done something to hurt the sport's still-fragile reputation.

Upon reading the article; however, I realized that Monson was merely practicing what he preaches. Granted, graffiti is a pretty minor form of anarchy, but given his position of somewhat-notoriety and semi-stardom, I'd much prefer he spray paint than launch a Project Mayhem-level attack on capitalism.

And besides, graffiti is still more "HaRdKoRe~!" than a simple sit-in, right? Oh, Henry David Thoreau, I hope you're proud, you scamp!

Monson is a political idiot, as is anyone who claims to be BOTH an anarchist AND a communist. On the one hand, you have a system without controls, while on the other, you have a system with a central government that controls every aspect of the economy, and, as a result, every aspect of life. Besides, a growing disparity between the incomes of rich and poor people is one of the only sure signs of a growing economy. In case you're thinking I'm wrong about any of this, consider the following: no, I'm not. Jeff Monson should email me so he can stop being a dumbass.

The guys isn't a dummy, he has a masters in psychology, but the economy or Iraq aren't going to change if you spraypainted an anarchy sign on every gevernment building in the US. I can see it now, the president says "There was an anarcy symbol painted on the state building in Olympia, Washington by the 1999 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Champion Jeff Monson? Ok, time to end the war in Iraq and lets get to fixing this economy and help the poor more."
Brilliant!!!
The crazy thing is, they said it cost $19,000 to clean the building. Whoever charged that, and whoever hired that cleaner needs to spend some time in jail too. Send the cleaning staff out there with some turpentine and a scrub brush. Hell give me $50 and I'll clean it off in 15 minutes.

Doctor Money:

You are obviously ignorant regarding political philosophy. However, before I begin my lesson, I feel it is important to point out that Monson has never claimed to be a communist. The hammer-and-sickle tattoo has a fundamental meaning beyond communism - that is farmers and industrial workers (the exploited working classes) uniting in opposition against the exploitative capitalists. Communism derives from Marxism. If you were familiar with Marx's work, you would realize there is an innate connection between Marxism (and therefore, communism) and Anarchism. Both philosophies oppose social hierarchies, economic inequality, exploitation and alienation. In fact, despite their slight differences, Communists and Anarchists have fought wars together against their common foes. Feel free to educate yourself so you may have legitimate arguments in the future.
