Diego Sanchez Not Impressed With BJ Penn's Cardio
Posted by Dustin James on 02.12.2009

During the media teleconference for UFC 95 "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" earlier today, Diego Sanchez was asked who he thought would win in a fight between UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian. Sanchez took the time to blast Penn's performance during UFC 94 on January 31:

"After seeing BJ's performance against St. Pierre, man, I'd say it's a bad time for him to fight anybody right now. Man, that guy has zero cardio and he goes into the biggest fight of his life with that type of cardio and endurance? I've never gotten tired in a UFC fight. I've never gotten caught tired in a fight. And to see this guy be that exhausted after one round? I know GSP is tough, but c'mon. He burned himself out in the first round just defending those takedowns.

"I think its a bad time for him to fight Kenny Florian. As long as Kenny Florian lasts past the first, second round, I think he's going to take over with conditioning. I don't care how talented you are. If you don't have gas in the tank, if the Ferrari doesn't have the gas in the tank, it ain't going to finish the quarter mile, and that's the bottom line."

BJ Penn doesn't have cardio problems. At lightweight. Dude just can't hang when he weighs 170. ::Shrug:: I'm a huge fan of Florian, but he's not gonna beat Penn unless BJ lost his heart. I imagine he'll more likely be on the warpath. But who knows.

I dont remember Diego being punished by Kos..it was a pretty lame fight with not much action...the first time they fought though Sanchez left Kos face looking like he was beat by a bat...and then Sanchez disposed of Florian fairly quickly pretty much distroying him. ...I dont think Florian will beat Penn...Bj with no heart and out of shape is still better the half the fighters in the ufc

"Maybe diego should look at the tapes and see that bj went well into the 3rd round vs sean sherk"

BJ's fight with Sean Sherk was almost exclusively a boxing match with BJ using his jab more than anything else. BJ's fight with GSP contained much more wrestling (most of the first round and parts of each of the consecutive rounds). Plus, BJ didn't seem to have much problem imposing his game plan on Sherk; it was a different story against GSP. The two fights were completely different.

i can see The Nightmares" point on this one...but, at 155lbs, BJ is currently unstoppable.

i give Ken-flo the edge in conditioning but, stand up wise...BJ's a killer.

hopefully The Nightmare has a good showing at 155, and then maybe just maybe if Ken-Flo can't beat BJ........how about The Nightmare vs The Prodigy???

i'll be going with the The Nightmare.
