411’s Ultimate Fighter Report 9.23.09: Episode Two
Posted by Larry Csonka on 09.23.2009
Rampage and Rashad continue their verbal battle, while James McSweeney battled Wes Shivers! Did Team Rampage even things up, or are they down 2-0? Also, it was announced that next week, Roy Nelson will face Kimbo Slice! Check out the full report!
Last week on the Ultimate Fighter…15 heavyweights showed up to the UFC training camp. Kimbo Slice was announced as the 16th competitor for the show, which was made a big deal by Dana White, and the target was immediately put on Kimbo. Rampage fell in love with him right away, and in fact, picked him with his first team selection. Roy "Big Country" Nelson was mocked due to his weight and paid no respect. Team Rampage won the toss, and elected to pick the first fight. Later in the show, John Madsen defeated Abe Wagner in a one-sided and extremely bloody two-round fight to put Team Rashad up 1-0. Rampage was not a happy camper.
What may we see tonight?
411's Ultimate Fighter Report 9.23.09: Episode Two
Jeremy is out tonight, and Patrick was busy so you got me kids. Let's get to work!
We kick things off at the house, which hasn't had the chance to get destroyed yet. Kimbo discusses how big the guys are, and expects to fight next. He is coming to win, to prove himself as an ultimate fighter. Roy Nelson wants to fight Kimbo, and says that is a headline fight everywhere. They are vets that can grind it out.
Team rampage heads to the facility for their workout. Kimbo says it is an honor to train with Rampage and that his team works really hard for the guys. Rampage is excited to have Kimbo, and sees himself in him. They work the ground game with Kimbo at first as Kimbo discusses his standup being his strength. He is still learning though. Rampage says a wrestler or BJJ guy will be picked to battle Kimbo so that they can try to take him to the ground, which is what they are working. They say Kimbo is a sponge and soaking it all up quickly. Rampage had a lot of faith in him, and says he is coachable.
Now it is time for Team Rashad to train. He says his team is feeling good, and that this is where they need to be. He says he picked mentally string guys, and need to be able to be molded. They start working positions, and Roy Nelson didn't like what they were doing, and tries to explain what he was doing. Rashad says he has been around, and it can be redundant, but he is being disrespectful. Rashad and Roy talk in the office, and one of the coaches says he is uncoachable. Rashad says he always has to have a rebuttal. Roy says he has been in the game a long time, and this does not fly well with them. They say that this is not a game and then the one coach says he needs to learn because Arlovski KO'd him! DAMN. Roy says it is a clash of masters, and that it may be a long road.
Time to pick the fight, and Rampage says Roy looked smaller in his pictures. Rampage picks James McSweeney (TEAM RASHAD) vs. Wes Shivers (TEAM RAMPAGE). Rashad is offended that Rampage has gone after his #1 guy. We go to a commercial.
Back from commercial and James McSweeney introduces himself. He is originally from the UK and is with Jackson's camp. He knows that they will produce a good game plan for him. He is 28, and he has come to terms that this is what he is made to do. Shivers is a big guy, but with size, he may run out of steam and be easier to read.
Team Rashad sits around and has a moment of Zen, but Rampage is there to practice and says he may have to ghetto blast them. Rashad was offended. Rampage confronts him and says he would appreciate it if they could have their time. Rashad says that they were brought late, so they are taking their time. Rampage says that has nothing to do with him, and that he is about to lose his #1 pick. He didn't want to have to drop Rashad before he is actually in shape to do so. Rampage reminds one of the coaches not to touch his ass. Rashad says the joking always gets serious, and that he is fake smiling.
Team Rampage practices. Wes Shivers tells us about himself. He was with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons, but it never worked out. He has a whole titanium shoulder! For him to be here, the lord certainly looked out for him. He doesn't think that his opponent can damage him. He is 6'7, he'll be 270lbs when he gets in the cage and he has great power. Rampage says he is there to win, and he thinks he has what it takes to win the fight. Rampage selecting him to fight makes him feel good. He is looking forward to the fight.
Back form commercial and Team Rashad trains. Rashad says they have good chemistry and that they should excel. They talk about Roy being a self-made fighter, and they know that they can help him, and they think he knows that as well. Rashad says they took the hard road to get to the UFC, and to get there, it is up to them.
Marcus Jones and others discuss the fight, and say that Wes has a great straight right and is huge. Demico Rogers predicts a 2nd RD KO. Wes Shivers says it is all about survival and he has nothing to go home tom only his loved ones. James McSweeney says the game changes today, and says Wes is not prepared. Both guys get prepared for the fight in the locker room. Wes isn't going out there to hurt anyone, but shit happens. McSweeney says he should just go home. We go to commercial.
Back from commercial for the fighter announcements.
THE FIGHT: James McSweeney (TEAM RASHAD) {3-3} vs. Wes Shivers (TEAM RAMPAGE) {2-0}
ROUND ONE: Steve Mazzagatti is the official. They touch and here we go. Leg kick by McSweeney, Shivers chases and they clinch. To the cage and Shivers pressures and takes McSweeney down. In half guard he goes, McSweeney pushes off of the cage but Shivers locks up the head and maintains control,, although not doing much. Shivers looks for a kimura, but McSweeney out and to his feet. Leg kick by McSweeney, he backs off and then throws a high kick, which gets checked. Low blow by Shivers, and he takes his time. Back to action they go, jab by Shivers and then a combo. Another, push kick by McSweeney, to the cage, waistlock by Shivers, McSweeney out and they separate. Shivers is dropping his hands and is tired already. Great jab by McSweeney, jab by Shivers in return. Leg kick by McSweeney, another and a jab. Shivers is mostly stationary now, body kick grazes McSweeney. Jab by McSweeney, jab by Shivers and misses on a combo try as he threw wildly. Leg kick by McSweeney. Another and a right by Shivers. McSweeney is cut over the left eye now, they trade rights, McSweeney backs off and lands a leg kick. Another leg kick by McSweeney as the round ends. Shivers is exhausted.
SCORECARD: James McSweeney 10-9.
ROUND TWO: Round two begins, Shivers is really tired and a jab by McSweeney to begin the round. Leg kicks follow, he is chopping the big man down. Body kick by Shivers, but his hands are down again. Double jab by McSweeney, hook and a leg kick follow. Body kick by McSweeney, but Shivers catches it and takes him to the mat. Shivers in half guard, short elbow follows. Shivers gets mount, starts to drop some bombs, gets McSweeney's back and gets the rear naked choke. McSweeney is able to roll out of that, Shivers with ground and pound from the back, but McSweeney escapes and backs off. They trade combos, Shivers is tired and McSweeney is slowing and backing off. Leg kick by McSweeney, right by Shivers in return. McSweeney runs from Shivers as he throws a kick, and Shivers looks so damn tired. I mean gassed out. Jab by Shivers misses, and McSweeney doesn't really want to engage. Leg kick by McSweeney, another and then one from Shivers. High kick by McSweeney, takes Shivers down and gets a guillotine. Shivers works to escape, it isn't that tight, and is out. He has top position as the round ends. I don't think Shivers has any gas left as he sits on the mat when the round ends. McSweeney is tired as well.
SCORECARD: Wes Shivers 10-9.
Back from commercial and we have a decision. Round one was close I thought.
OFFICIAL DECISION: James McSweeney (19-19, 20-18, 20-18)
Rashad thanks Rampage for picking the fight. McSweeney is tired, and he is happy he won, but he won't have won until he wins the final. Rashad says they have to know they are the best team and that they will win. Shivers said he had a plan, but he got tired and lost the fight. Rampage said it is on him, and he made bad picks. He says they are in a bad position since Rashad gets to make the picks. They have to take it back next week.
The next fight announcement for next week is Roy Nelson vs…KIMBO SLICE!
Dana says that Kimbo is explosive, but Roy is experienced. This will be the true test for Kimbo. Kimbo says he is a fighter, and he will fight him!
We get highlights for next week, as Rashad and Rampage argue a lot, and then it will be BIG COUNTRY vs. KIMBO!
SEASON STANDINGS THUS FAR:
TEAM Rashad:
* James McSweeney (1-0)
* Brendan Schaub
* Justin Wren
* Jon Madsen (1-0)
* Roy Nelson
* Darrill Schoonover
* Matt Mitrione
* Mike Wessel
TEAM Rampage:
* Kimbo Slice
* Abe Wagner (0-1)
* Demico Rogers
* Wes Sims
* Scott Junk
* Wes Shivers (0-1)
* Marcus Jones
* Zak Jensen
-Rashad's tiny little coach guy came across like both a punk and a whiner when he was whining at Roy. Don't string together a sentence laced with profanity and expect people to respect you, especially when you're a scrawny little white guy who's never stepped in the cage and you're swearing at a guy who's got just as many fights as his coach, and arguably has had more success. Also don't call out Roy Nelson for getting KOed by Arlovski (a fight he was doing well in, I might add), when your boy Rashad got KOed much more devastatingly against Machida (in a fight he never looked like he'd win).
-There's no way McSweeney should've won that fight. As tired as Shivers was, McSweeney did NOTHING. Striking was more or less even by my count, with McSweeney landing a little crisper strikes in the first round to Shivers more plentiful strikes, plus Shivers had the takedown and the kimura attempt. Shiver dominated the second round, other than the guillotine. I could see a draw and a third round, but realistically, all that would've done is make both guys look that much worse. Both guys' cardio was pathetic, but Shivers, to me, won the fight.

Whats up with all the Rashad hate, cant you all remember that Machida is a monster. Roy Nelson needs to remember that he is a student not a coach. He lost his last 2 fights.
One more thing the cardio these guys have is shit.
Posted By: Ian (Guest) on September 23, 2009 at 11:38 PM
Damn Rampage is a bad coach. As much as I thought that fight should have gone to round 3, Shivers was gassed and it wouldn't have mattered.
Kimbo gets subbed or KOed next week, but looks OK because it was to a vet like Nelson.
My bet is Team Rampage loses every fight, save maybe for a win by Big Wes.

"who's got just as many fights as his coach, and arguably has had more success.
Wow. You're an idiot.

i thought wes won dat fight what the hell he took him down in both round and had control and did good damage so wtf did i not see a knock down or did h lose points or something

Wyatt...
...Rashad's 'scrawny little white guy coach' is Greg Jackson, head honcho of Jackson's MMA and the fight brains behind Rashad (Ok, not that impressive), GSP, Nate Marquadt and other top stars.
He is to be respected and listened to, even if he looks like you could snap him with a well aimed sneeze.

Guest#6761,
Nice reasoning, assclown. Other than Forrest and Machida (against whom he's 1-1), who has Rashad really beaten? A washed-up Liddell and Michael Bisping - not exactly impressive. If Roy Nelson was on Season 2 of TUF, he'd be coaching this season, and he'd probably have a UFC Heavyweight title reign or two under his belt as well (considering how weak the HW division was for quite a while).
chris.crowning,
I'll have to go back and watch the episode again, but I'm about 90% certain the guy I'm referring to isn't Greg Jackson. I've seen Greg Jackson, I know what he looks like and who he coaches, and I know that he knows his stuff, but the guy whining at Roy, like I said, I'm fairly certain wasn't Greg Jackson. Otherwise, I never would've made the observation.
Posted By: Wyatt Beougher (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 07:06 AM
Wyatt are you related to Nelson? More success than Rashad, are you kidding me? Ye because being the IFL HW champion is the biggest accomplishment for any MMA fighter, oh wait...
Who has Nelson beaten exactly? His biggest win is over Brad Imes, while Rashad has beaten Liddell, Griffin, Jardine, Bonner, Imes, Bisping and Drew with Ortiz. Plus he was the champion of the most competitve division in the UFC, and was a TUF winner. I think Rashad was more successful.
Oh and the scrawny little guy was Jackson, the best coach in MMA today. Getting KOed by Machida is better than getting KOed by Arvloski.
Nelson is the favourite, because most of the other guys suck, but he is so overated, he has beaten no one of note and has an awful physique, which isn't good for the sport.

to chris.crowing
watch the episode before you comment you moron, Jackson was not the scrawny white guy bitching at Roy it was one of the assistant coaches, and he did come off as a whiny bitch and he does not deserve the respect that Jackson gets.
Now that thats out of the way, I can't believe that Wes lost that fight. I was shocked at the decision. I figured it was going to a third round but when they said it was a decision I figured it had to go to Wes because there was NO WAY McSweeney won both rounds. Wes was screwed plain and simple. What was even more shocking was that everyone in Rampages corner just kind of accepted it like they knew it was coming. Maybe I missed something, maybe I need to watch it again but I saw no way Wes lost that fight. McSweeney did nothing on the feet outside of a couple of decent jabs and a few leg kicks which don't score shit. Wes got takedowns and advanced to dominant position in both rounds and attempted at least one submission in each as well. He also landed a number of shots on the feet that sent McSweeney stumbling backwards.
Please somebody explain to me how he lost that fight and if you are going to say because of the leg kicks save your keyboard the trouble and just fuck off right now.

@Chris.Crowing
The white dude giving big country shit wasn't jackson...
Posted By: PolePot (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 09:34 AM
Is it just me or is Roy Nelson coming off like a giant douche? From saying "I thought I was Dana's big announcement" in the 1st episode, to not listening to his coaches and saying it's like "2 masters clashing" instead of a student not listening to his teacher, to saying "Roy Big Country Nelson vs Kimbo Slice could headline anywhere in the world", to ALWAYS calling himself Roy Big Country Nelson, etc etc.
Really full of himself for a guy who's never been in the UFC. And has a bigger beer belly than me.
And I though Shiver totally won that fight.

For your knowledge Rashad Evans was THE UFC LHW and UNDEFEATED after destroying former champs Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin, and his only loss came to the undefeated beast known as Machida...NOTHING to get ashamed OF....
What did Roy Nelson accomplished in his career exactly better than Evans ?
Ah yeah NOTHING...Oh wait being the most OUT OF SHAPE Fighter in the world....
The only little skinny whining guy who has never stepped in the Octagon here is YOU and nobody else, and Greg Jackson would murder you if both of you would have go inside the cage together.....

Both guys looked bad in this fight. McSweeny was not impressive to me and Shivers is a big guy with little skill and no gas tank.
I was also really surprised that Rashad and Jackson are so high on him, he didn't listen to their instructions and wouldn't stick to the plan. Bad fight all around.
McSweeny may have some skills we didn't see but he never went for a finish and looked lazy.
Posted By: mstrong73 (Registered) on September 24, 2009 at 09:59 AM
There is no way McSweeney won that fight. McSweeney was on his back, mounted, suffering a flurry of punches to the face in the second round, and almost got caught in a rear naked choke. McSweeney also almost got caught in a kimura or arm bar in round 1. On the feet, yes, McSweeney had a ton of leg kicks, but he also got caught by punches he literally ran away from. No way McSweeney's leg kicks out weigh two take downs, a full mount and two near-submissions.
Posted By: Guest#9903 (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 11:18 AM
Yeah, the white guy yelling isnt Greg Jackson.
And once again Steve Mazagatti shows that he knows nothing about fighting by telling them that it was an awesome fight afterwards. I mean its one thing to be polite, but that fight was horrible
Posted By: Kjeldbjerg (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 11:51 AM
That wasn't Greg Jackson, that was Trevor Wittman. Jackson was only on the first episode helping Rashad make his evaluations and picks. He did not appear in this week's episode at all.
I'm not too sure how much he will be on the show this season as I feel he would not want to take that much time away from his team in New Mexico for this.
Posted By: Whole Fn Machine (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 12:02 PM
First off - it wasn't Greg Jackson getting into Nelson's face, but I agree with the coaches. Nelson can't be goofing around and not listening to them or it not only affects him but also his teammates.
This show has lost some luster for me knowing Rampage is punking out of his fight with Rashad. The UFC should never have bailed his ass out when he went nuts after he lost to Forrest.
As for the fight last night I actually scored the rounds opposite of Larry - I gave Shivers the first and McSweeney the 2nd. Their cardio was pathetic - I think Rashad used up more energy than anyone screaming at his boy to pound on the obviously exhasuted Shivers.

Weird????????????
@ 13mins and 53sec
Poster on the wall is BLURRED OUT...!
Why?
This is the UFC's training center, staged by them, why would they need to exclude something from the scene?
Anyone have any clue as to what was BLURRED???

I thought that Wes had won the fight as well after they said it was going to a decision after round 2 because he HAD to have one at least one of those rounds. Had I been sitting in a chair I would have fallen off it when they announced TWO scores as 20-18?!? I mean he was gassed, but he still did WAY more than McSweeny did when there was actual fighting taking place. McSweeny pushed the pace (hah!), but he didn't so anything besides land some leg kicks when he wasn't getting mauled on the feet or on the ground. If McSweeny was Rashad's #1 pick I hate to see what the rest of the crew is like, because the last half of the second round was absolutely pathetic/comedic watching both men totally gassed.
Posted By: Wyku (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 01:14 PM
McSweeney isn't good but Rashad likes him because he is a training partner
Posted By: Guest#0218 (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 01:17 PM
Yeah, I agree. There's no way McSweeny actually won that fight. Shivers spent the second half of the first round standing in one place, but that's only half a round. Takedowns, takedown attempts, submission attempts, counter-striking....I don't know what the judges wanted.
And Roy really had the bitch out coming to him, whether the skinny white guy was Greg Jackson or not. If he's not ready to listen to the coaches, he shouldn't be in the house. Maybe he is better at some things than other guys, but he won't get be able to pick up new tricks if he spends all his time shooting his mouth off.
And I'd say it's okay for the coaches to call him out on getting KOed by Arlovski if they really can help him. If it's some punk off the street, they have no right, but these are guys who have coached champions. They know the game, perhaps better than Roy, and he doesn't even respect them enough to keep his mouth shut.

Like everyone said it wasn't Jackson but that guy was right never the less. Seemed a little too agressive but the point sticks.
Obviously there is no way Nelson has accomplished more than Rashad...
Finally, Shivers diserves to lose, McSweeney was more aggressive and did more damage, appaling performance from Shivers. What does everyone expect when he goes and and leans back in the corner? McSweeney scored with leg kicks and got some good shots, especially at the end of the second round. It should have gone to a third but it wouldn't have made a difference because Shivers was completely gassed. There is no way Shivers won and he looked happy to lose because he didn't want to continue. Very suprising that this guy was in the NFL with conditioning like that, obviously he never did anything note-worthy there. I can't beleive he let go of the mount.
McSweeney isn't good either, he looked pretty shit but because he is Rashad's buddy he got selected first, nothing to do with skill or ability. Pretty sure he won't win.
One last thing, Rashad looks and sounds like Cuba Gooding Jr when he is coaching.
Posted By: Guest#7188 (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 03:22 PM
I was honestly VERY surprised that McSweeney was announced the winner, and assumed that it was a lack of intimate knowledge of scoring in MMA on my part that caused me to come to the wrong conclusion. Apparently, I wasn't all that wrong, according to the commenters here.
Posted By: J. Alexander Mitchell (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 04:12 PM
I think it needed a third round. The only thing I can guess is that McSweeney won it because of his well connected Punch, then kick, then guillitine combo... but wasnt that in the same round...
WTF how the hell did he win?! Plus Wes got all the take downs.
MMA judges... wow

Epic Fail for Wyatt,
Actually, I had an amateur MMA fight on February 7, 2007, at a bar in Mobile, Alabama, so I have stepped inside a cage before. As for fighting Greg Jackson, that'd never get sanctioned, being as how he weighs all of 135 pounds and I weigh 260. Also, since IT WASN'T GREG JACKSON I WAS TALKING ABOUT, maybe the epic fail was on your part. From what I've seen of Greg Jackson on All Access and in interviews, profanity-laced tirades aren't really his strong point, and he's actually well-spoken, as opposed to the little turd from last night's show, who sounded like a wannabe Diaz brother.
Also, for those of you who can read, I did say ARGUABLY in reference to who has accomplished more between Roy and Rashad, not that I necessarily believe Roy has accomplished more, just that the argument could be made, considering Roy managed to win the Heavyweight championship of a semi-legitimate promotion without ever appearing on a reality show. True, he had to go on TUF to take the final step, but look at his pre-TUF career compared to Rashad's and tell me Roy doesn't have a better pedigree COMING INTO THE SHOW.
Posted By: Wyatt Beougher (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 06:36 PM
its not he coaches that suck its the FIGHTERS. on both episodes i could hear both rampage/rashad scream their asses off for their fighter to do damage and neither one did crap. so blame the fighters not the coaches. this last fight i heard shivers corner yelling to throw elbows several times and he didnt listen at all
Posted By: Guest#8624 (Guest) on September 24, 2009 at 07:02 PM
Damb, both those dudes were gassed. Can't argue with the result, though, really I was expecing either guy to win. But you haters have to swallow the fact that McSweeney had the better takedowns.
Rampage isn't as good a coach as he is a fighter, I'll say that.
Looking forward to next week with Nelson and Kimbo (FINALLY STEPPING IN). Everyone's expecting Slice to get his ass kicked but we'll have to wait and see. I don't get all the internet negativity around him. Yeah, he's a street fighter who lacks in basics, but don't diss him until you see what he can really do.

All of this rashad team hate is ridiculous. Big Fat Country is there just like everyone else to learn and to be trained. You were heavyweight champion of a joke of a league your only chance to prove yourself on a big stage was getting embarrassed by Arlovnski. You won the title in a fight with someone who has never fought since and your two defenses were against a guy that's 7-7 and Brad FRIGGIN Imes! Your best opponent's best fight was losing to your coach and you want to say your his equal. I hope Kimbo knocks you the hell out.
