411's Ultimate Fighter Report 10.14.09: Episode Five
Posted by Patrick Mullin on 10.14.2009
Tensions flare with both teams from within their own ranks while Rampage tries to break his losing streak...does he?
Last week on the Ultimate Fighter…Brendan Schaub and Demico Rogers met in the fourth bout of the series and in a back and forth one round battle Schaub submitted Rogers with an Anaconda Choke to put Team Rashad up 4-0. Rampage walked off in disgust and is in the middle of a crisis after being held winless through the first four bouts of the show. Matt Mitrione spilled the beans on his team match up choices and forced a change of order becoming known as "The Snitch."
What may we see tonight?
411's Ultimate Fighter Report 10.14.09: Episode Five
Patrick Mullin back for some more TUF action, but I'd first like to send my condolences to the family and friends of Captain Lou Albano who passed away today at the age of 76. Albano is a HUGE part of wrestling history and his contributions will remain forever. R.I.P. to the Captain. This TUF Report is dedicated to the man known as "The Guiding Light".
We start off recapping last week's events, and hearken back to the first episode specifically spotlighting the last pick, Zak Jensen. Might he be fighting tonight? Team Rashad is in the middle of a training session with Rashad gushing about being 4-0. Showing both pride in his team and delight at besting Rampage. Some real intense wrestling workouts go on and apparently Mitrione has hurt his shoulder. He tries to play it off and keep going, talking about getting a cortizone shot with Rashad telling him its only a short term relief, and the damage he can do after the shot will only worsen his shoulder's condition. Rashad tries to figure out whether Mitrione is hurt or injured, and Rashad just tells him to rest it and ice it. We cut to Team Rampage's van driving to practice with Marcus voicing his want to fight. He meets Team Rashad who tease him about having a spot for him on the team who wants them to pick him to fight. They tell him they are picking him and Marcus gets really excited.
Team Rampage begins their session and Rampage tells us how much losing messes with his personal…and his sex life, which he apparently barely has as it is. Rampage believes its Zak who Team Rashad is picking to fight. Rampage and Tiki are showing the guys how to get their head and shoulders up on the cage rather than at its bottom and using it to regain standing position. Rampage says Jensen is the guy on the team with probably the smallest skill set, but he's a big guy who has wrestling and that's all he has going for him. Jensen says he needs to work on being able to fight off of his back. Junk says Scott's a nice guy and he likes him but he bragged early on about his skills and at practice he seems to be a weak like. Rampage doesn't expect much from Zak but he says he'll have to roll with it as we go to commercial.
Back from commercial(by the way see Black Dynamite, it was awesome) and Wes Sims loves to wake up every morning to a good shower. He thought he rolled his ankle because he stepped on "a family of Jensens", accusing him of jerking off in the shower and not cleaning it up, threatening him they'll fight if it happens again. Jensen admits to taking a shower and blowing his…nose in the shower but not masturbating. McSweeney says all of the guys in the house gets hazed but they all come back, but Zak is a mopy guy. They joke about his journal entries and he seems to be this season's Charles "Captain Miserable" McCarthy. Team Rashad stars their training session and Mitrione says his shoulder is feeling better as Schaub wraps it for him going into practice. Mitrione really wants to fight on Monday. Rashad feels Matt is a drama king and an attention seeker. Matt asks Rashad to fight on Monday and Rashad wants to know why he should pick him. Mitrione says he's a guaranteed win with something to prove. Rashad tells him being hurt doesn't make him a bitch, and before his guys prove themselves in the cage they prove themselves at practice. Rashad feels Matt may be the weak link because of his tendencies, and his coaching staff thinks he doesn't want to fight and wants to use his shoulder as an excuse. The coaches claim they are SUPPOSED to go undefeated and their going to crack the whip on Matt in practice. Team Rampage shows up for their training session and Wes describes the Jensen shower situation to Rampage. Rampage says he wouldn't have been embarrassed and that whoever steps on them can raise them because they belong to him now. Sims and Zak were training and Zak passed out. Rampage says if he were Jensen he'd have moved to another planet by now. Damn. We head to commercial.
We're back and Mitrione is playing basketball in the pool while various guys lounge and watch him. McSweeney brings up how ridiculous it is that he can't practice and can play basketball just fine. Madsen thinks Mitrione is an excuse maker and looking for a way out. Mike said he was a pro football player and is using this as an excuse to fight last to get a favorable match up. Nelson and Schaub mock him openly to his face. Brendan just wants to see him fight and answer some questions. In practice Mitrione escapes Roy's mount and scoots to back control just fine and Rashad and his fellow coach notice that his shoulder is fine. Rashad has the guys start wrapping and work on bag conditioning drills. Mitrione asks Rashad if he can ice his shoulder and only work his right hand and Rashad denies him while he tries to make excuses, pissing Rashad off. Matt says his shoulder got sore and at the end of the day he wanted to ice it and says he's just worried about aggravating what he believes to be an injury. He tells Rashad its just sore and Rashad tells him to stretch it out. Mitrione says he'd like to have an interchangeable arm like the old Masters of the Universe figures. In the van we join Team Rampage who joke about being too tired to squeeze one out. Jensen says fuck with him all you want, he'll answer in the cage, and we get our fight selection as both teams and coaching staffs are at the gym. Rashad loves the control and loves messing with the guys he can pick. Team Rashad picks Justin Wren to fight Wes Sims. Wren didn't want to fight Junk, so Rashad changed the match up to Sims who he feels is experienced but doesn't pose a threat. Rampage feels Sims could be the one to bring control to Team Rampage. Rashad tries to joke with Marcus who is in no mood for it. Marcus is LIVID that Rashad didn't pick him to fight. Marcus accuses Rashad of giving him his word, but Rashad corrects him that Marcus only implied that. Marcus says he isn't sensitive, but he is pissed off. I don't want to be across the octagon from that guy when its time for him to go. Hopefully they put Mitrione there.
Team Rashad has its first Wren-centered training session. Wren is from Ft. Worth, Texas and is out of Travis Lutter's BJJ camp. He's only 22, but he's happy for his match up. He knows Sims has a lot of experience and is a tough guy, but he thinks stylistically he has the advantages. He feels his wrestling pedigree is superior and he can use it to his advantage, and can pressure and break him by using his youth advantage to stay relentless in the octagon. Back at the house Sims says he just wants to make his fight exciting. He discusses with Kimbo he's out to have Fight of the Night every time out. Kimbo says it should be a good fight because Sims isn't a quitter. Kimbo says Wren is a Greco-Roman wrestler, "whatever the fuck that is." Kimbo ponders his options to get into another fight, saying he's going to fight again and just believes he'll be in another fight before he leaves the house. Sims jokes that Kimbo may try to play the role of Tonya Harding to his Nancy Kerrigan. Sims brings up his training at Hammer House with elite level wrestlers(albeit Freestyle ones as opposed to Greco) being a good neutralizer for Justin Wren. The plan is for Sims to keep the fight long range with his height and reach. Sims shows us he's in career-best shape. Rampage tells Sims that all Justin Wren has is Greco-Roman. Sims is going to either win or lose in devastating fashion because his goal is to please the fans(he pleased me when he dropped knees on Frank Mir), and he's going for the first option! Commercial break.
Back from commercial as the Teams arrive in time for weigh ins. Brought to you by Castorol GTX! Wren shows off pink leopard print underwear and I'm scarred for life. Rampage seems to be too. Wren is in at 247.5 Wes Sims drops down to a banana hamoc and I'm screwed for life. Sims is in at 251 as Rampage is scared how excited everyone is to see two men in their panties. Dana White chimes in telling us he feels Wes Sims has the advantage. Fight day is here and Wren says it's the biggest fight of his life but there's bigger ones to come. He's going to take it to Wes from start to finish and isn't looking past. Sims wants to thank Dana and the Fertitas for bringing him back via TUF by giving them fights to remember him by. Wren feels less pressure in the fight because he can let things go in and hang loose. Rampage hypes Sims up pretty good and they work the mitts in the locker room. Sims feels good and is looking to put an ass whoopin' down. Rashad hypes up Wren telling him to put it on him and hurt him. Each guy is really amped up promising to take it to their opponent as we head to our final commercial break prior to the fight.
THE FIGHT: JUSTIN WREN {10-1} VS. WES SIMS{22-12-1}
ROUND ONE: Your referee is Herb Dean(NICE). Sims will enjoy a 6 inch reach advantage and 7 inches in height. They come out with Wren immediately charging and clinching Wes against the cage trying to work foot stomps. Sims throws some body shots but Wren has double unders. Sims is able to slip out and get speration. He lands a jab and tries a push kick but is countered with a right hand and Wren gets the takedown against the cage. Wren has side control. He slips into mount and has a head and arm triangle in tight! Sims is turning red and he looks to be out as Herb Dean check the arm but he's still in it…and now he's asleep! OFFICIAL DECISION: WINNER, JUSTIN WREN BY SUBMISSION (Head and Arm Triangle), ROUND ONE!
Rashad knew it was over when the choke was locked in. Rampage thought Sims would Hulk up as Herb Dean checked his arm but unfortunately Sims didn't have the maniacs behind him like Hulk did. Dana thinks Sims dropped off big since his last stint in the UFC but is impressed with Justin Wren. Sims doesn't remember much other than passing out. Rampage wonders if he's cursed. He never saw Justin submitting Wes ever. Rampage says its totally crushing to him. Team Rashad goes in to check on Wes while Team Rampage doesn't even bother, other than giving a clap when Wes gets up. Wes Shivers defends Rampage saying he's not a coach, he's a fighter. So what are the other coaches excuses Shivers? For that matter what's yours? Wren feels blessed to get his win and is on cloud nine as Team Rashad goes up to 5-0. He said it's a great feeling but nowhere near what he wants, he came here to fight at the Palms in the finale and win baby! Rampage tells Tiki and his coaches that they can't fight for their guys. They can show them everything but they can't get in there. Dana says guys connect with their coaches or they don't, but there should never be a case where a coach walks out on his fighter like that. Dana hearkens back to Ken Shamrock's frustration. Rampage congratulates Rashad who tries to tell Rampage he should be checking on his guys, and that Tiki can do something other than follow Rampage. OH SNAP! Rampage and Rashad get heated as Rashad calls Rampage selfish. Rampage defends not checking on his guys, saying its more about him not going to prison rather than anything else. Rampage is telling Rashad he's going to learn what its all about, and Rashad tells him he can beat Rampage with his own style and they jaw jack each other some more in the hallway with Rashad actually getting the better of it. Rampage says he loves his guys. Rashad gets the last word in as Rampage leaves in a huff.
Next week…Rampage and Schoonover have a verbal arguing match almost getting physical. Wes Sims accuses Zak Jensen of sniffing his shorts, and an injury to a fighter could put Kimbo back in play…or so they've said since Kimbo lost.
SEASON STANDINGS THUS FAR:
TEAM Rashad:
* James McSweeney (1-0)
* Brendan Schaub (1-0)
* Justin Wren (1-0)
* Jon Madsen (1-0)
* Roy Nelson (1-0)
* Darrill Schoonover
* Matt Mitrione
* Mike Wessel
TEAM Rampage:
* Kimbo Slice (0-1)
* Abe Wagner (0-1)
* Demico Rogers (0-1)
* Wes Sims (0-1)
* Scott Junk
* Wes Shivers (0-1)
* Marcus Jones
* Zak Jensen
So he quit because he's getting completely embarrassed on this show every week. Good lord, and then getting knocked out by Rashad would've been the icing on the cake.

still waiting for the BEST season of TUF.....sure the last 2 fights have had quick finishes but eh. and also it was a little misleading when they said we would see something unexpected. team rampage fall to 0-5 we all expected that. hopefully we get to see marcus fight next or the week after so he can give rampage a win

Damn, a 0-5 start. What is this, the 2008 Detroit Lions? I don't see Rashad getting all the skill and Rampage getting all the no-talent wannabes... Heck, maybe the guy just can't coach and has no one in his team who can. While I'm really happy for Rashad, it must be heartbreaking for the fighters who are on Rampage's team.

C'mon, I wanna see the episode where Rampage fights the gym door. At least it looks like he wins that one.

I'm loving this season almost as much as the season when Team Forrest whooped on Team Rampage. Seriously, I've never liked Rampage, and never will. I only hope he comes back for one last fight with Rashad so Rashad can knock him the fuck out and Rampage can fade off into obscurity.

Here are my thoughts
Coaches
Rashad- I have grown to respect and like Rashad Evans. I think he is great fighter and a great coach.
Rampage- Selfish, unintelligent and a really bad coach. I have lost tons of respect for Rampage. He doesn't care about knocking Rashad out. He showed that he would rather collect a pay check from a movie destined to fail, then fight Rashad. Whatever man, you do the fucking fight then do your movie crap. It would've been different if you weren't going around talking all this shit.
Team Rampage- Marcus looks impressive, Demico has a nice upside, kimbo is kimbo and the rest of them dont look great at all. By the way Zak just say u jacked off and next time ur gonna skeet up on his bed. Ok thats dumb but it would work much better than ur loner thing u got going on.
Team Rashad- Justin Wren look pretty good, Brendan looks like a good fighter, Roy is Roy, now Matt Mitrione you act like a 12 year old. Your like the drama queen on a daytime soap in a 250 pound body. Nut up or shut up and please stop this whole back and force DRAMA

Marcus Jones is going to commit manslaughter in the Octagon. God have mercy on that poor, still-to-be-named soul.

I went into this season not liking Rashad very much, but he's proven himself to be very classy and I've actually switched and don't like Rampage now...and as the season progresses, I believe Danas side of the story more and more

Rampage has done the impossible. He's made me root for Rashad Evans. I cannot STAND Evans, but in this context he's God compared to Rampage. Rampage is a nut job who is gonna screw up saying "I'm gonna mess you up" 100 times until the director fires his ass.
BTW, is it not complete bullshit that Christian Slater isn't playing Faceman? Nobody does super slick, crazy con artist like Slater.

Everything you need to know about Kimbo and why he won't be a successful MMA fighter was summed up in his speech where he thought he should be getting another fight in the house......but dismissed Greco-Roman (he didn't know wrestling) as some BS style that he didn't need any information on.
Odd episode as it barely focued on either guy fighting.
The guys on Rampage's team got screwed. He is the worst. Everything Rashas says about him is 100% true. Good Riddance BA Barracus.

Never thought I'd say this, but I have really come to respect Rashad as I have been watching TUF. He has really been there for his fighters and is actually coaching them. Rampage on the other hand, only seems to care about himself. How can you say "I'm not a coach" when that is your job on the show?

If you actually WATCH Kimbo admits he doesn't know much but that he wants to LEARN. So he didn't know what Greco Roman is... big deal.
Dude has admitted he wants to learn and Dana the demigod himself admits Kimbo surprised him with his ability to pick things up.
And Rampage is GREAT! He makes this show interesting to watch.
This is just a vehicle to sell PPV's people, let's try to remember that and not take it so seriously

"He meets Team Rashad who tease him about having a spot for him on the team who wants them to pick him to fight. They tell him they are picking him and Marcus gets really excited."
Can anyone rewatch the show and confirm that Rashad actually told Marcus he was picking him?
I was pretty sure that what Rashad actually said was "How do you know you aren't fighting?", in response to Marcus asking why they weren't picking him.
Posted By: Guest (Guest) on October 15, 2009 at 03:23 PM
Nobody told Marcus he was fighting, the big idiot assumed that's what Team Rashad meant

a few things about Rampage's lack of coaching:
1. Not checking on fighters is unforgivable - if you aren't a consoler, go chew them out, just don't turn your back and leave.
2. I wonder if this is Penn/Pulver 2 - Pulver's team went 5-0 (with stellar matchups like Cole Miller/Monstah Lobstah), then lost three straight (with even better matchups like Maynard/Weems), and both got two in the semis when all was said and done (oddly enough - the guys who lost have done better in the UFC). Its very possible that the matchups have just been bad, or Rampage just picked less talented guys.
3. Last time Rampage had a full time trainer, Ibara as his "assistant" and while he lost more than he won - he seemed less directionless than he currently does.

hey.. you think this is bad.. matt hughes only had 2 guys go through the first round.. and those two guys ended up facing eachother in the finals.. so...
