411's Ultimate Fighter Report 10.21.09: Episode Six
Posted by Patrick Mullin on 10.21.2009

Last week on the Ultimate Fighter… Team Rashad went to 5-0 in the competition after Justin Wren put Wes Sims to sleep. Rampage and Rashad had another heated confrontation over the "coaching techniques" of Rampage or lack thereof. Matt Mitrione is playing games with his coaches and teammates with an on-again off-again arm injury. Oh and Marcus Jones had his feelings hurt.

411's Ultimate Fighter Report 10.21.09: Episode Six

  • I'm missing a good chunk of what could be the deciding game of the NLCS. Hope you guys appreciate it.

  • Recap begins with Rampage's hazing of "Titties" Schoonover, Zak Jensen becoming this season's outcast, and Justin Wren's personal version of Nyquil to cure Wes Sims of his insomnia. In the house and Darrill starts off the day with an 8 am beer and liquor binge, much to the amusement of the guys in the house. The guys arrive at their training session and Rashad brings in Phil Nurse to help the guys with their stand up training. Nurse is most famous for his association with GSP. Everyone seems to be working their asses off, even Mitrione. Rashad is in big time spirits as Darrill and Brendan get in the ring to spar. Schoonover looks off when in sparring with his cardio looking suspect and head movement not there. He's also throwing arm punches. McSweeney explains to Rashad that he's probably drunk and Schoonover calls them rats laughing it off. Rashad has a conference with him about his drinking causing problems with his cardio and Rashad implores him to try to cut back and try to live up to his potential. Darrill agrees to keep his drinking to a minimum. Rashad calls him a diamond in the rough because of how Team Rampage views him. He walks in on a Team Rampage session to retrieve a necklace he left behind and Rampage hazes him mercilessly calling him "Titties" once again. Schoonover then tells him he'll cut some weight and kick his ass at 205. Way to step up! Rampage follows him out and tells him it would make his day if he came to 205. Rampage is accusing Schoonover of having a big mouth. Schoonover and Rampage get into a "Who would knock out who" argument. It started off fun and then it got serious and Schoonover said he wanted to hit him. Schoonover says if it escalates he's trying to restrain himself but has a hard time doing it. FIGHT ANNOUNCEMENT! Rashad has chosen Darrill Schoonover to face Zak Jensen. Schoonover also gives a "Fuck You" to Rampage when he calls him "Titties" and they get into a "Fuck You" exchange with Schoonover walking towards him looking for a fight. The guys separate them and Rampage threatens Schoonover that if he walks up on him again he'll be in trouble. Before he can we go to commercial.

  • Back from commercial and Team Rashad is doing their part to hold back Darrill from hitting Rampage. Schoonover looks ready to explode. Rashad steps in to stop him from going after him and Rashad takes over. Rashad asks Rampage how he'd feel if he called him "Dickface" every day. Rampage goes into a retarded thought process about Rashad wanting some titties and being jealous that Schoonover has them. Rashad says if you don't want a confrontation, don't call him a name. Not a hard idea to grasp unless of course you're an idiot. Dana believes Darrill is making a mistake getting into it with Rampage. I'm not so sure about that. Kimbo comes up with the name "Linderman" for Zak Jensen. Kimbo believes if Shrek had a little brother it would be Jensen under the name "Linderman". Kimbo feels Jensen has a serial killer side. Wes Sims compares him to the little puppy who you can constantly abuse but always comes back in a really sick analysis. Abe Wagner makes a Lord of the Flies reference that probably went over the heads of most viewers…and castmates to be honest. Wes Sims explains that he's running a pool on what day Zak Jensen will flip out. Jensen looks on from his bed and you have to believe that the serial killer thing may not be far off. All the guys contemplate breaking Zak on the day they have. We head to commercial as Zak Jensen has an emotionless look on his face while writing down something. Probably a hit list or drawing a picture of what he plans to do to one of the guys involving a hacksaw and a bathtub.

  • We're back and the guys look at Schoonover's jailhouse-like tattoos, particularly a clown cutting off a girl's head. Rashad calls him an interesting character who had a "weird quietness about him" and we get our second potential serial killer comparison. The gameplan for Schoonover is to keep things basic. Rashad looked in his eyes and he sees a fire in him like he's going to wreck some "stuff". Schoonover looks much sharper in this training session than he did to start the show. Rashad is teaching him to rough up Jensen in the clinch and to let his hands go. They want Schoonover to stand up because he apparently has good hands and really good power. They're concentrating on potshots outside, and on the inside roughouse tactics and combination punching. Tiki brings in a big picture to the locker room prior to Team Rampage's training session and it's a comical painting of Team Rashad, with Rashad in the likeness of Michigan J. Frog. Rashad again goes back to the "Titties" jokes and indeed he's with a full pair and a bra in the picture, and is then called a Butterface. Rampage says "Titties" is a wonderful fight for Zak. Marcus Jones believes in him, while Kimbo feels he lacks confidence and may be right. Rampage insults him to try and draw out his anger. Rampage feels he needs the mental game to match his physical game. During a training drill off of a takedown Zak suffers a nasty cut right at the edge of his eyebrow and its bleeding pretty profusely. Kimbo practically gets a hard on. On a side note I'd probably bring back Dimico, but hey I haven't won a fight as a coach on TUF. Then again neither has Rampage and we go to commercial as the medic takes a look at the cut.

  • We're back and Tiki is hyping up Kimbo to be the man to replace Zak if he can't fight. The coaches question Zak's availability and the chances of his cut opening in the fight. Zak says there's no way he won't fight, and Kimbo gets a little depressed. He gets questioned about how he'll react if the cut opens and he says he's going to fight on. Rampage is impressed by his attitude which he felt was the weak point. Rampage thinks they've turned him into the soldier he needs to be. He spars with big Marcus and shows off some good wrestling skills dumping the big guy at any chance he gets. His stand up is very telegraphed though. Team Rampage's coaching staff seems very happy with his showing. Jensen feels they're taking him lightly. I gotta say this looks like the best chance Team Rampage has to win a fight so far. Team Rashad has the coaching staff show up early to the gym to work up a sweat before practice and they see the picture Tiki had made of them. The coaches surprisingly don't want Schoonover to see it before practice and Rashad hides it before the team arrives. The team arrives and Rashad describes that Team Rampage made a picture of them and to disregard it because they're on top of their game and it was done because Team Rampage can't beat them. We head to commercial.

  • Back from commercial and we're here for the official weigh in brought to you by Castorol GTX. Why worry about engine sludge? Dr. Keith Kizer is there to oversee the weigh ins. Rampage mocks Schoonover as he weighs in at 251. Jensen is in at 263. Junk wants Zak to beat Darrill for Zak's own sake. McSweeney feels it could go either way and they're "two unique characters". Darrill turns 24 on fight day and it's the second time he's fought on his birthday. Sims asks McSweeney what the odds are. He differs to Kimbo and thinks either guy may go crazy. McSweeney bets Kimbo a Tapout shirt that Darrill wins. Tiki and Rampage show up and write "Titties" on Schoonover's locker room sign, and for good measure put dots in the O's of Schoonover to make them look like tits. This pisses Schoonover off. Zak is determined to be the first man on Team Rampage to win. Rashad tells Schoonover the best way to get at Rampage is to beat Zak. As is custom Team Rashad has their man warm up in the locker room while things are pretty relaxed and not serious at all in the locker room of Team Rampage. Rashad hypes up Schoonover while Rampage continues giving a lecture on Darrill's titties. This is just embarrassing now. Both men now warm up in the locker rooms and Rampage is STILL FREAKIN TALKING ABOUT TITTIES! Shut up already! Fight time. Jensen is fighting out of Minnesota as Team Rashad has a laugh at his expense. The birthday boy is fighting out of Texas as he makes his way to the octagon. We have our last commercial break prior to the fight.

  • THE FIGHT: DARRILL SCHOONOVER {10-0} VS. ZAK JENSEN {7-3}

ROUND ONE: Jensen will enjoy a four inch reach advantage, and two inches in height. Your referee is ugh…Steve Mazzagatti. Darrill working his jab. Jensen with a good right and each man connects going into a clinch. Darrill backs Jensen into the cage and Jensen gets some space looking for a standing guillotine. Another clinch and Jensen puts Schoonover against the cage. Schoonover gets a Thai clinch and lands some BIG knees and flurries with some punches to Jensen, who whethers the storm and gets a takedown. Schoonover gets a triangle attempt from his guard as Jensen tries to punch and fight out. Schoonover doesn't have it in tight but he fights and cinches up on it while Jensen punches in vein. He tries to slip out while Schoonover hits him with some short shots and they trade arm punches. WOW this looks in tight now and Jensen's cut has opened up to boot. Mazzagatti stops it as Jensen goes to sleep.

OFFICIAL DECISION: WINNER, DARRILL SCHOONOVER, SUBMISSION, ROUND ONE

  • Rampage gets pissed off again, Rashad gets happy again. Dana thought it was a good fight considering the guys in it. Schoonover came here to win and he has two to go until the finale. Jensen is dejected after the loss. He says he got too comfortable in a bad position and stopped thinking. Jensen breaks down and takes it hard in the dressing room. Team Rampage presents Team Rashad with the picture they hid from Schoonover earlier. It doesn't have the desired effect as they all laugh about it.

  • Next week…Team Rashad turns on Matt Mitrione in full blast, and Matt snaps back in return. The final two prelim matches are announced. Rampage and Rashad get into a heated verbal exchange, and we get our seventh preliminary fight.

My God is Rampage a moron.

'You cant lose because he has TITTIES! I wouldn't lost to a guy with TITTIES! Would you really lose to a guy with TITTIES?!'

Im a casual MMA fan and Im sure Id be a better coach than that moron.

6-0. Rampage's team is down six wins to zero and he's more preoccupied about making an ass of himself than actual coaching. I can't believe this.

Oh, wait... It's Rampage we're talking about. I can believe this.

Got some respect for Rashad tonight. Lost some for Rampage.

Just like last week, it wasn't the "editing" that made Rampage look bad, its himself. At this point, the more surprising thing would be Rampage's team actually getting a win.

rampage is an ass. that whole he`s got titties speech annoyed the hell out of me. just wanted the fight to start so he could shut up. i was hoping 4 a win for rampage on this one oh well. i really cant wait for big baby to fight. hopefully he`s the one to give rampage a win

You know, the combination of this one season and Rampage quitting has caused me to lose all respect for him. He's really showing his true colors here...and whereas before you might think he's a nice guy who likes to joke around...he's really shown himself to be a bully and a thug. I hope he decides to come back so Rashad can kick his ass.

If the censors had decided to bleep 'Titties,' this episode would have been hilariously indecipherable.

But yeah, clever editing be damned; Rampage is possibly the least-intelligent guy in MMA (good fighter, though). Even Wes Sims seems logical by comparison, and that's insane.

I know that titties editing can certainly be used to titties make someone look bad. But you do titties have to say titties a lot of titties times in order for it to titties show up in the final titties product.

Schoonover looked pretty good, he took a lot of punches while he was working to cinch in that triangle but he he works on his defense he could have a nice future.

I was embarrassed for Rampage last night. It was sad. Kind of pathetic, really.

I am willing to bet Big Marcus wins his fight by knocking somebody's head off. Team Rampage will only have that 1 win in prelims. He probably should never be asked back as a coach ever again.

I started out this season rooting for Rampage, but he has exposed himself as being the big arrogant jock with a corny sense of humor and a thin skin. Rashad is coaching circles around him even though one of his own guys told Team Rampage their entire strategy!!!

Posted By: Polish Post (Guest)  on October 22, 2009 at 10:45 AM

Rampage's plan is going perfectly. Soon Team Rashad will have to fight each other, and Rampage can swoop in and make them hate Rashad.

Well, no, that obviously won't work, but I bet that is what he's thinking. After all, it's hard to believe someone can be this bad unintentionally, right?

    Rampage's schtich is getting old.
    Jokes about bad breath CHECK
    Jokes about body odour CHECK
Saying titties five hundred times CHECK

Everything about Rampage has been covered already (titties)... he has yet to coach, so nothing he's done this week really surprised me.

Rashad, on the other hand, stepped up. I'm one (of many) who just never liked the guy. Far too arrogant, I don't care for his showboating, and he had a huge ego long before he deserved it.

That out of the way, the guy and his assistants can coach and genuinely care about their guys.... from taking down the painting before the fight, stepping up to defend them, covering "Titties" on the locker room, the his whole speech.

Rashad "got it," knew what his fighter needed, and made sure he didn't get anything that would be detrimental before the fight.

Schoonover sure made Rampage eat shit last night. Theres also a point where the name calling becomes less psychological warfare and just stupid Rampage really crossed that line.

I'm sure these guys definitely will lose sleep over whether you respect them or not...

Rampage has succeeded in making me hate the word titties. He may be the most annoying person in the world and he is definitely the worst coach ever on TUF, worse than Shamrock

Posted By: DC (Guest)  on October 22, 2009 at 07:38 PM

i was a fan of rampage. even all the antics before this season of TUF becuase I was expecting it from Rashad as well. But the difference is, with the antics Rashad is doing his job. to coach his team to win. Rampage can't even do that. To me, Rampage is a joke, ever since losing his title to Forrest, he hasnt been the same fighter and i dont need to see him in the octagon anymore

Posted By: bob (Guest)  on October 22, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Just to add my two cents - I hated Rashad before this season - and now will probably never cheer against him again. He seems like a genuinely nice guy who cares about his team. Good for you Rashad.

Posted By: MJH (Guest)  on October 23, 2009 at 03:36 PM

This is right I guess since we won't see Rampage anytime soon fighting so its almost like burried in wrestling on your way out. His team is getting shut out and he will look like a fool at the end for all this hype for a fight that won't happen. I feel bad for his team though that should have had a better coach that cared.
