411's Ultimate Fighter Report 10.28.09: Episode 7
Posted by Patrick Mullin on 10.28.2009
Matt the Rat and Scott Junk wage war on each other and Rampage and Rashad look to wage war on each other verbally and physically. All that and the final match up before the quarterfinals is decided!
Last week on the Ultimate Fighter…Team Rashad went to 6-0 when Darrill Schoonover got some revenge on Rampage Jackson by putting Zak Jensen to sleep with a triangle choke. Rampage said the word titties so many times its gotten to the point where I never want to hear it again. Kimbo got excited for nothing, and Rashad won the war of words with Rampage.
I hate the Yanks and the Phils, so I'm not really missing anything tonight and I will not guilt trip before starting tonights show. As if you guys really cared anyway.
We see all the coaches and teammates in the gym as Rashad mocks Rampage's claims of not being KO'ed and talks about his first fight with Wanderlei. Rampage responds with his imitation of Rashad being KO'ed by Machida. Rampage still hates losing, Rashad still loves winning. Rampage starts calling Rashad "Gay-shad", and Rashad calls Jackson "Whaaampage" the crybaby and they argue about who's been KO'ed more. Rashad picks Matt "Meathead" Mitrione to face off with Scott Junk. Dana doesn't know much about Mitrione, but knows quite a bit about Junk and feels he'll win. That leaves the final fight to be Mike Wessel from Team Rashad against Marcus Jones of Team Rampage. Wessel is giving up a lot of size to Jones. Rampage feels this could FINALLY be his chance. Rampage and Rashad get into a face off arguing who will treat the other like a girl, as Junk tries to break it up. Rashad is telling Rampage he'll make him quit and says Rampage quits during the fights on TUF. Rampage then says its his fighters quitting right in front of them, and Rashad says Rampage talks while Rashad wins. They get into each others faces and they look ready to swing. Rashad is making the better points by making Rampage contradict himself constantly, but its evident Rampage is getting to Rashad more. McSweeney talks about how personal things are getting between the two the point where they can't go back. Rashad throws a threat at Rampage as they each get up on each other while Team Rashad pulls him away. Mitrione and Hector Ramirez keep Rampage back from Rashad before Rampage walks away and shuts the gym door. We go to commercial.
Back at the house Scott Junk says Mitrione showed him a note that said Mike Wessel was scared to fight him. Junk and Wessel know each other outside of the show and Junk informed Wessel about it. Eventually everyone gets involved and Wessel is PISSED. Madsen brings up Mitrione having the match ups to reiterate his history of underhandedness. Mitrione played for three NFL teams and he says what brings him to MMA is the mental and athletic side of competition. That means he couldn't hack it in the NFL. Rashad believes Rampage's best fighter is Scott Junk and that's why they like the match up. McSweeney says Mitrione's technique is landing and believes because Junk has very good stand up he'll take Mitrione out. McSweeney tells Rashad of Mitrione's note issue back at the house. Rashad believes its Mitrione projecting his own fears and confronts Matt about it. Mitrione tries to say Wessel is indeed scared and Rashad tells him to stop focusing on other people and questions who he is to make such claims. Back at the house Mitrione is trying to have a moment of clarity and says it only comes when he's doing something violent or athletic as Schaub seems not to take him seriously. He has voices in his head and no way to silence them so fighting gives him peace. How many freaking followers does the Ultimate Warrior have? Wasn't it the ONE Warrior Nation? Mitrione says he knows its time to dance and his opponent is going to die. That's a nice segway to a commercial break.
Team Rampage is at a training session and Junk is saying he's throwing everything with power. Tiki has to instruct him to plant his feet when he throws. Junk's wife told him to fight with all his heart before he left and he says that's going to make the difference. Tiki wants him to dictate the pace and come forward while using head movement while landing his own strikes. He thought Mitrione was a nice guy at first but discovered he was a scumbag who plays games. Rampage thinks Junk is excited because of how much he dislikes Mitrione. Marcus hopes he rips him apart, Kimbo thinks Junk is KO'ing him, Abe Wagner concurs. Junk says technique is out the window when he scraps and he's looking for the big shot every time out. He says he will get the first win for Team Rampage. Mitrione and Madsen are in the kitchen and haven't gotten along since day one. They argue because Mitrione went ahead and drank Jon's orange juice without asking, and Mitrione never even tries to apologize. Marcus asked and Mitrione says "Well I must be an asshole," which Jon concurs with. Jon threatens to slap Matt after he leaves and to stir the shit McSweeney goes and tells Mitrione. The guys go to the gym and Mitrione and Madsen are paired to spar. When instructed to go at 60% for the first two minutes, Mitrione goes full blast on Madsen even after being warned by his coaches not to. Mitreione tries to pick a fight and Rashad tells McSweeney to put Mitrione outside. Matt says Madsen refused to keep sparring with him and Matt has a break down. Rashad talks to Mitrione as if he's a child and puts him in a place telling him not to be concerned with other people when he hasn't even fought yet, and tells him to save his stupid aggression for his fight. He brings up Mitrione ducking out of practice with his shoulder and again rips him a new one, then accuses him of ducking fighting Team Rampage and being an idiot because he's trying to fight a teammate in practice. Mitrione flexes on Rashad like an idiot. Rashad tells Mitrione if he goes into his fight not wanting to fight Junk as much as Madsen he's going to do the "fuck you up" himself. Commercial break.
We're back and the guys at the house joke about Mitrione and start another pool, this time called "When Will the Rat Snap?" started by McSweeney and Wes Sims. Sims says when a super hero is needed he's called upon, and Sims dons a ninja gi. He scales the walls and sneaks up on Matt in the basketball court hiding behind the bushes. Sims actually gets the jump on Mitrione and jokes with him. That was by far the most entertaining thing this season. He meets Mitrione in the house and they're going to play pool and Mitrione starts telling Sims not to touch him. McSweeney and the guys eat up Sims needling Matt at every point. Outside Mitrione asks Sims why he's trying to start shit when there's better people to do it to. Sims asks him why does he think he's being picked, and Mitrione says he's the wrong guy to do it to and that he's had enough of it and leaves. Fight day is here. Junk and Marcus eat breakfast and Junk voices his displeasure with Mitrione and the things he'd love to do to him in the fight. Matt Mitrione tries to quote Old School and does a horrible job of it. Junk says the first thing he thinks when he sees Matt is "Fuck him" because he's trying to stop his dream. Jones says when your own team doesn't like you that's not a good sign. At practice Rashad asks Mitrione if he's stable and seems hesitant to let him practice. Mitrione seems like an idiot when he makes claims he telepathically connected with his wife. Rashad seems like he really doesn't know how to take him, but so long as he seems ready to fight who cares. Junk has the pride and faith in himself to win the entire show and believes he'll smash Mitrione. Junk has dreamed of putting him down and hurting him. Matt says everyone has a killswitch they can put on and he can do it quick. No weigh ins on this episode and we're going right to the fight. Junk tells Matt to keep his mouth shut and he's getting smoked. Matt's 6-0 vs. Scott in his head and says now its time to do it. We reach our final commercial break before the fight and this one could go the distance if the time remaining in the show is any indicator.
THE FIGHT: MATT MITRIONE {0-0} VS. SCOTT JUNK{6-2-1}
ROUND ONE: Your referee is Josh Rosenthal. Mitrione will enjoy two inches in height and a very substantial 8 inches in reach advantage. Mitrione takes the center of the octagon and is a southpaw. He darts quick jabs from an awkward stance and catches a kick attempt by Junk. He lands some good punches and drops him but Junk takes them well and scrambles to his feet. Mitrione and Junk circle each other and a Mitrione punch drops Junk again. Junk tries a 1-2 to no avail. Junk short with a right and tries a kick but takes a punch and is knocked down again. Mitrione has him against the fence and he avoids a desperation double leg while landing good punches. Junk gets him to back off and the ref orders a stand up. Junk tries a sloppy takedown and eats a right hand and goes to his back and a stand up is ordered. Matt checks Scott's leg kicks and throws a flurry of punches but doesn't land on anything other than Junk's arms or elbows. Junk gets a single leg on the ankle but can't finish and they stand. Matt wings big shots but is getting visibly tired and can't keep his hands up. Junk is covering against the cage and eats a left hand. Mitrione is throwing terrible arm strikes and is gassed but Junk isn't fighting back. He comes off the cage and starts landing some right hands before bulling Matt to the cage. Junk gets a collar tie and then tries a takedown. Junk has a grip but isn't working any strikes. Mitrione gets off the cage and throws the weakest strikes you'll ever see. Junk lands some good right hands. Mitrione paws with meaningless arm punches. Junk lands flush a few times but either Matt takes a helluva shot or Junk has NO power. Now they both look tired. Round ends.
10-9 Mitrione. He dominated the first three minutes scoring several knockdowns and visibly hurting Junk while avoiding numerous takedowns. Junk finished strong but not strong enough to win the round.
ROUND TWO: Junk's right eye is very badly swollen and bruised. They go to coenter octagon and Matt is gassed while Junk is still hurt. Meaningless leg kick by Matt. He paws but Junk counters with a good right hand. Matt throws slapping punches and Junk offers none in return. Leg kick by Matt. Junk short with an overhand right as Junk checks a leg kick. Junk throws and misses. Matt throws punches that wouldn't kill gnats but Junk doesn't like getting hit with them. Leg kick from Matt and he runs to establish distance. Sloppy punches by Junk lead to a takedown into the guard of Mitrione. Mitrione closes then opens guard and attempts a sweep but takes a right hand. Junk throws very weak punches from the top and the ref should stand these guys up. Each guy flurrying with awful punches. They can't hurt each other because they aren't throwing hard. This is sad as they get warned to work. Referee stands them up and they both look dead. Mitrione flicks a jab and a left hand and a push kick backs up Junk. Junk lands a good right hand but Mitrione takes it and stands there as he throws arm punches. He slips in one good right hand. Junk with a right hand. Mitrione with a left. Matt throwing awful flicks and Junk throwing nothing. Junk tries a right and a left and misses both. Mittrione wings some right hands that don't really connect well. Junk wings hard punches that don't land. This is awful. Each guy flurries and lands nothing to end the round.
10-9 Junk just because while Matt landed more they didn't do anything, while Junk landed a couple of right hands and had a takedown.
This was awful after the first four minutes of the first round and we have a decision.
OFFICIAL DECISION: WINNER, BY MAJORITY DECISION, MATT MITRIONE
Rampage is pissed at the decision and rightfully so. Cecil Peoples of all people scored it 20-18 for Mitrione and RAMPAGE WRECKS A FUCKING DOOR INTO PIECES! OUTSTANDING! Patricia Jarman Manning had the same score as I did, and this SHOULD have went to a sudden victory round. I actually could have seen how Junk could have won as he rallied late in the first round and could have stolen it, but there is absolutely no way Mitrione won the second round. That was just terrible judging and a terrible fight. The second round should qualify as one of the worst rounds in MMA history.
Next week…Marcus Jones loses his cool, Schoonover and Rampage have another face off, and the final preliminary fight between Marcus Jones and Mike Wessel, and the quarterfinal matches are announced!
SEASON STANDINGS THUS FAR:
TEAM Rashad:
* James McSweeney (1-0)
* Brendan Schaub (1-0)
* Justin Wren (1-0)
* Jon Madsen (1-0)
* Roy Nelson (1-0)
* Darrill Schoonover (1-0)
* Matt Mitrione (1-0)
* Mike Wessel
TEAM Rampage:
* Kimbo Slice (0-1)
* Abe Wagner (0-1)
* Demico Rogers (0-1)
* Wes Sims (0-1)
* Scott Junk (0-1)
* Wes Shivers (0-1)
* Marcus Jones
* Zak Jensen (0-1)
I disagree with you about the judging, but also disagree with the judges. I saw it as 19-18. 4 knockdowns in one round should earn the man a 10-8!
I think we can ALL agree that we are very lucky there wasn't a third round. After having high hopes for this season, I have been thoroughly unimpressed with technical abilities and overall cardio of most of the participants.

i was just waiting for a KO in the first minutes of the fight by the end it was wes shivers vs that other guy part 2. i really wish marcus wins one for rampage but i have a feeling i`ll be disappointed.....

Cecil Peoples just can't escape controversy.
Posted By: Jeffrey (Registered) on October 29, 2009 at 03:38 AM
I was looking forward to this season but there has yet to be a memorable fight and this one and the first one were horribly boring after the initial burst.These guys have no cardio.
At least we know Rampage can beat an inatimate object.That door was probably the only thing dumber than him in that room too.

I don't think anyone wanted to see a 3rd round of that and Cecil Peoples gave it to Mitrione to save us. Cecil Peoples, hero of the people.
If either of them had any kind of a gas tank it would not have had to go to the Judges.
Mitrione gassed in about 3 minutes and Junk in 4. After the first couple minutes non one landed a punch with much power.
I don't think we will be seeing either of these guys in the UFC

Scott Junk DID win the 2nd round...the problem was the first round was a 10-8 round. Scott Junk got destroyed in the first 3 minutes of the 1st round...to the point where he laid down and didn't want anymore...Matt was just too retarded to know how to finish him.
Posted By: DeeRayMoore (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 08:41 AM
That fight was just sad. Mitrione was gassed half way through the first round, and Junk wasn't aggressive (and after all that tough talking).

Rampage vs Door
best fight whole season
Posted By: Guest#2203 (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 09:19 AM
there is no way mitrione won both rounds however he did win the fight. 4 knockdowns in a round is a 10-8 round if i've ever seen one. Final score should be 19-18 for Mitrione. I find it curious how none of the judges scored the first round 10-8 as if 4 knockdowns doesn't get you a 10-8 round what does?
Posted By: stronelis (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 09:22 AM
Yeah I had it 19-18 too. Mitrione DOMINATED round 1. Round 2 I would have given to Junk, but I can at least see the argument for Mitrione. Junk had to know he lost the first round and needed to go "balls to the wall" in the second for the KO or for a third round and he didn't.

Roy Nelson has some of the best cardio on this show...I never would have thought that.

Can't believe Rampage called his team quitters and then asked them to back him up and say that he was a great coach
Posted By: boaisy (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 11:33 AM
I could see a 10-8 first round had Junk not come on so strongly over the last two minutes of the round. He landed several clean right hands and while he was knocked down was never visibly hurt. The knockdowns were also due to him being off balance because he only had one leg on the ground, 99% of guys will get knocked down if they get hit while someone is holding their other leg. It didn't warrant a 10-8.

Great point about Rampage calling his team quitters and then asking them to back him up. He is garbage.
And I know this show has been edited to make Mitrone this year's asshole, but for my money it's Sims. I find nothing he says or does to be funny and his performance fighting was awful.
I agree with most here - 19-18 Mitrone was my score. Junk should be embarrassed.

If this was hyped as "the fight of the season", the fights in the rest of the season must suck pretty bad.
Posted By: Guest#6516 (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 04:26 PM
I had it as a tie. The reason i scored it 10-9 and not 10-8 is Junk rallied and hit matt with a few shots. I did not want to see a third round though. Matt was trying to survive and against a better fighter he would have lost.
Posted By: Kyle (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 04:52 PM
I'm newer to the world of MMA, but I didn't think a guy tripping and falling on his own should counted as a knock down. That's what I saw, Junk falling on his own ass and then crawling over to try for a take down. All in all a very weak fight but still not as weak as the second week fight where both guys were standing there with their hands on their hips huffing and puffing at 2:19 of the second round.
Posted By: Blasphemous (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 06:19 PM
Junk lived up to his name in that fight...wow, he was garbage after being built up as being something actually worthy of fighting on this show. He deserved to lose that fight.
Posted By: Wyku (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 06:39 PM
The fix is in! That door was cardboard!
Posted By: Guest#2209 (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 06:41 PM
Its absurd that all the fighters are gassed before end of round 1. I think we have reached the point of saturation where there is not much talent left to pull
Posted By: Guest rj (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 08:09 PM
Seriously, yeah, Rampage got ko'ed more than Rashad. BUT
Rampage took a ton of damage before going down(Silva), whereas Rashad went out like a bitch against the first guy to give him a solid punch to the jaw(Machida.)
Posted By: jay (Guest) on October 29, 2009 at 08:10 PM
I know Nelson can throw his fat stomach and bore people to death to win. I know Kimbo can thumbs up his way to victory. But is there seriously anybody on this show who could last a round with ANYBODY in the UFC heavyweight division?
Posted By: lethargic (Registered) on October 29, 2009 at 09:01 PM
For the love of pete, is cardio not a requirement when they screen these guys for this show? All these guys are gassed before the end of the first round, if not sooner. I think this was the worst fight of the season, even worse than lard belly laying on Kimbo for 2 rounds.
Posted By: JDMPJM (Guest) on October 30, 2009 at 12:22 AM
what are you internet tools talking about that fight was f**king awesome. You're a bunch of idiots and can go f**k yourselves.
Posted By: Dana White (Guest) on October 30, 2009 at 02:15 PM
from mjh: "And I know this show has been edited to make Mitrone this year's asshole, but for my money it's Sims. I find nothing he says or does to be funny and his performance fighting was awful." Absolutely, Sims is the worst character on the show, with Matt second. Roy Nelson is dumb as a brick so he takes third.
These guys have the WORST cardio I've ever seen. They are terrible. I do understand how physically demanding it is to fight but good lord run some laps because this is embarrassing. The worst was in the second (?) episode with Shivers just standing there with hands on hips. Both Junk and Mitrione were brutal in this episode, and Junk made it worse for himself with all that trash talking.

This season will doom the show. Here's my logic: they pumped all this publicity into it and got millions to watch by putting Kimbo and NFL players on it, then every single fight has sucked.
Now I know they'll keep the hardcores and the reality TV fans, but I predict that next season will have the lowest ratings yet thanks to them subjecting all these new viewers to this crap.
The next tryout session should be nothing but cardio. Just set up a real nasty crossfit workout thats heavy on conditioning and if they can't finish it in the given time then they go home. Whoever is left can do the skills challenges, sparring, etc..
