411's Ultimate Fighter Report 11.11.09: Episode Nine
Posted by Larry Csonka on 11.11.2009

Last week on the Ultimate Fighter…the Red Sea was parted, water was turned to wine and prayers were answered as Marcus "Big Baby" Jones stepped into the cage and made quick work of Mike Wessel via submission. This made Rashad sad about this as he wanted a shut out, but it possibly kept Rampage from the insane asylum. Now Big baby is an island to himself as he enters the quarterfinals as the lone member of Team Rampage…

411's Ultimate Fighter Report 11.11.09: Episode Nine

  • We're down to the elite eight now, and getting closer to crowning our latest TUF Champion. Team Rashad has SEVEN of the quarter finalists, and Rashad worries about training seven guys to basically fight each other. He doesn't want to show favoritism, and wonders how to handle this. He then tells the guys the plan, and says they will separate the guys fighting, but won't coach that much to make it fair. Just business as usual in the training sessions.

  • Training is underway, and Justin Wren says it is odd training beside the guy that you have to fight. He admits that they watched each other, and admits that Nelson has the experience. Nelson jokingly offers to help him. Nelson wants the fight to be over so they can go back to the way things were.

  • Matt Mitrione is sitting out and discusses his brain being scrambled, and that his eyes are sensitive to light. In the car, Matt acts out of it as some of his teammates discuss dinner and make fun of him for milking the situation. Titties says he is dehydrated and may have been crying. Mitrione says he was dizzy and dry heaving. Schaub thinks he has a concussion. He doesn't think he is faking it, but wonders if he will get pulled for Kimbo is he has a concussion.

  • Dana says that he and the coaches will pick an alternate if Mitrione cannot continue. The guys joke with Kimbo about his chance to come back.

  • Back from commercial and Kimbo is working out. Rampage discusses Kimbo coming back if Mitrione cannot continue. He says Kimbo is improving greatly. Tiki, one of the coaches, puts over Kimbo. Kimbo says he is adding more tools to his belt and getting to be a better fighter. Kimbo says if the haymakers land, you're done.

  • Mitrione went to the hospital last night, and apparently did not come back. Rashad says he is worried because he has not heard any news. Rashad says Kimbo coming back would be great and exciting. As team Rashad works out, Rampage discusses how they always talk shit. he then puts COCKS (roosters) in their cars! Rampage says they had them for a day and fed them a lot so they will shit in the cars. He is very proud of himself. Rampage loves chickens, but not these funky chickens.

  • A Team Rashad coach exits practice, and finds the rooster. Rashad comes out to find them as well, and says there were FIVE in his car. They were smelly, nasty and shit in his car. They then release the chickens, and chase them around, Rocky style. Rampage laughs his ass off and Rashad is a great sport about it. Rampage says Rashad took one home to eat. The rental cars are filled with shit as well. Rampage promises at least one more prank.

  • Back at the house, Matt Mitrione returns. Wes Sims asks him how his GYNO appointment was, and says the bleeding should stop soon. Mitrione just says he rattled his brain. Kimbo says Mitrione has sand in his vagina, and that he mentally quit already. Sims makes fun of him more, and says it is not fair to make fun of him anymore.

~During commercial, we learn that they let the chickens go free, because animal rescue would have killed them~

  • Back from commercial and Dana appears at the house and surprises everyone. He talks to Mitrione, and Mitrione says he will fight because he has to. The doctor cleared him, and he says he will do cardio to see how he is. Scott Junk wants to fight if Mitrione doesn't. Mitrione says he may have had concussions before and Dana says that head trauma is nothing to mess with and that he will be watched closely. Mitrione says the doctor will make the final decision on it.

  • We head to the next day and training, and McSweeney thinks that Wren will win the fight against Nelson. Kimbo says Nelson has the big advantage, and Wren is a fat kid eating doughnuts. Schaub says that Nelson is world class Ju Jit Zu, but Wren is world class Ju Jit Zu defense due to his wrestling.

~During the commercial, Roy Nelson busts out a Boston Crab on Kimbo~

  • Back from commercial and the guys head to the gym again. Weigh-in time. Dana says Roy loves Roy more than anyone, but Dana is looking to be impressed. Nelson is 264, and Wren is 250. Dana was impressed with Wren's first fight. Marcus Jones says he wants to pick Roy, but Wren is "just too cute".

  • Back to the house we go. Wren says Nelson is tough and seasoned. Nelson says Wren looks up to him. They pile in the van and Wren prays. They get taped up, and Wren states that his dream will not be taken away. He is in better shape and plans to push the action. Nelson says he needs two more wins, or his wife will be pissed.

  • They head to the cage and are ready for battle!

  • THE FIGHT: Roy Nelson {13-4} vs. Justin Wren {8-1}

ROUND ONE: Josh Rosenthal is the official. They touch and here we go. Jab and a combo by Wren to begin. Jab by Nelson, double jab by Wren connects. Again he connects with it. He lands a left after missed right, Wren comes in and connects with the combo, Nelson lands a few and they clinch along the cage. Knees by Nelson, who has dominant position, more knees land for him as he punishes the legs of Wren. The get separated even thought Nelson was throwing knees. Back center, combo by Nelson. They throw wild, Wren backs off Nelson, to the cage but they get away quickly. Wren is landing cleaner and controlling position thus far. Jab by Nelson, good right by Wren and he backs off Nelson again. Nelson misses a left and backs away again. Jab by Wren, misses a combo and then a good right by Nelson. Jabs by Nelson, good right again lands. Leg kick by Nelson, Wren rushes in and connects. Jab by Nelson, Good combo by Nelson, mostly blocked though. Jab by Wren again, overhand right by Nelson ands, Wren misses a big right as the round ends.

    SCORECARD>: 10-9 Wren.

ROUND TWO: They come out, jabs by Nelson to kick it off. Wren with an off-balanced right, slips a bit, chases nelson but doesn't connect. Jab by nelson after a good right by Wren. Double jab by Wren, good right by Nelson. Wren connects as well, combo by Nelson. Leg kick by Wren, jab by Nelson and lands a good left as well. Nelson has better control this round thus far, Wren shoots, to the cage they go, to the ground for a moment, shot by Nelson and they pop back up. Jab by Nelson, jab by Wren, to the cage they go and they trade and Wren backs off. Leg kick by Nelson, jab follows. Right cross by Nelson, Wren chases, Nelson backs off and lands another jab. Both guys tiring here, great combo by Wren connects. Knee by Nelson, jab follows and then jabs by Nelson. Wren is breathing out his mouth and looks very tired. Right by Nelson lands, another follows that. Wren gets wild, eats a right from Nelson but then lands a leg kick. Jab by Nelson, they trade and Nelson seems to have more power right now. To the cage, not much as they separate, and the round ends with a whimper…

    SCORECARD>: 10-9 Nelson.

Most feel that this should have gone to a third round. Dana says Wren was impressive and destroyed Nelson for the most part. JARDINE CAMEO~!

OFFICIAL DECISION: Roy Nelson via Decision (20-18, 19-19, 20-18)

  • Dana says it should have gone to a third round, and that Roy coasted. He then says Wren likely couldn't have gone to a third as he was too tired. Roy feels he could have finished him in a third round.

  • Wren is pissed and second-guesses himself.

  • Dana says Nelson got the piss beat out of him for a round. He will respect Roy when he is actually exciting.

  • Next week, Mitrione is not sure if he can fight, and all eyes go to Kimbo. Rampage and Rashad play VOLLEY BALL~! Plus, Jon Madsen faces Brendan Schaub.

Its already obvious that Kimbo doesn't come back as his finale fight has already been announced, but why would they have wanted to bring him back. He looked just as bad as he ever did in losing to Nelson where I can't imagine he'd have even brought in ratings. Can't wait for Kimbo to make his way right out of UFC with a couple of losses.

These guys are a fucking joke. By far the worst group of fighters to be on TUF. Gassed after 1 round, that's pretty sad.

I'm REALLY getting tired of whiny ass Dana bitchin' about Big Country. Yo, he's gotta fight 3 times to make the finals..he's winning. He's one of the few marginally skilled heavyweights on the freakin show, AND he handily beat the "Legendary" Kimbo in the first round. Dana is the master of turning the blind eye to guys he's likes..there have been PLENTY of boring fights this season, and MANY MANY fighters with little or no skill...go yell at them or shut the hell up. BTW, I agree with the previous comment..as far as fights go, this has EASILY been the worst season of TUF yet.

It's hilarious. Dana's throwing a serious hissy fit over Roy Nelson eliminating his man crush/meal ticket and is just nonstop talking about how awful of a fighter Nelson is. Then he gushes over the atrocious Mitrione/Junk match which was basically a real life Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots match.

I wouldn't call Nelson's win over Kimbo "handily." Big Country just took him down and layed on him. He wasn't exactly schooling Kimbo in anything.

    @thedevilbunny

The Kimbo fight got stopped in round 2, Nelson's standup is terrible, and he gasses easy. I remember liking him in the IFL, but he is not impressive thus far. With his lead hand that low, I'm aching to see someone get a straight right in and KO him.

Fat Country is arguably the most boring fighter of all time, even more boring than Tim Sylvia and even more hateable than Tito Ortiz. The guy lucked is way through the fight with Kimbo and did the same against Wren.

Who the hell scores that fight 20-18? Wren won round one by a mile, simple as that. I seriously don't ever want to see Fat Country in the UFC. Throw him to Strikeforce or something and let Fedor eat him for breakfast, because the sooner somebody destroys this idiot, the better.

@thedevilbunny I agree that most of the other fighters so far are just as boring as Roy Nelson, I agree with Dana though, Roy talks like he is the best thing since sliced bread. He just isn't. I was rooting for him against Kimbo because I want that freak show to end, but I wanted Wren to kill Roy so that I didn't have to listen to him anymore.
I can't believe that didn't go to the third round I thought Wren did enough to win round one and lost round two.

reading on another site alot of guys are saying it should have went to a 3rd round cuz Wren won the 1st. I don't think so. I thought Roy won the first after coming back stronger in the second half of the round. And he definitely won the 2nd. I think a lot of "fans" are really just biased buttholes who let their opinions get the best of them.

Its the truth the fight should've went to the 3rd round.

Like I said once before... after episode 3: "Dana's basically down talking the winner of the fight, to defend the Skills of the guy he wanted to win the fight… I mean I get the fact that you want to promote the guy who lost, is career wise. But down talk the winner … He Won! So at least that says that he was the better man! To tear the guy down on how he won, has no logic what so ever! If he has such issues with a Fat Guy, possibly wining his show, then why would he pick him in the first place...? One more detail: Dana was excited like a 12 year old boy with his first Bonner, over the Matt Mitrone vs. Scott Junk Match… Really? Its so obvious that Dana’s #1 priority right know, is looking more for the guy’s with the look, than the skill… And that quote “He’s matches are boring”, not everything works out the way it should… That UFC 97 Main Event didn’t exactly set the world on Fire, and he was the brainchild of that…

The point here: “If you Hate the Idea of a Fat guy Wining, Avoid Picking a Fat guy at the Very Start (Period)”, cause in MMA, Not everything goes as planned, after all this years, in this business, Dana you should know that by know…

People posting are complaining about Roy Nelson but he has been one of the few fighters this season that has been able to go for a full two rounds. Wren is 10 years younger and gassed 3 minutes into the fight. So much for him pushng the action. Gotta give roy his props, he is doing what he needs to do whether Dana likes it or not.

This fight illustrates the weakness of the 2 round + sudden death format. I would have scored Round 1 10-9 for Wren, but then again I'm not an MMA judge. Regardless, in a real 3 round fight, Wren would have had another round to prove himself or Nelson would have had a chance to finish him (likely based on how tired Wren was) and avoid the stigma of winning a bad decision.

other than the initial flurry where Wren hit Nelson maybe 3 times what else did he do for the rest of the fight other than chase Nelson around and eat jabs?

i'm appalled by the lack of conditioning of these fighters. wren was positively gassed in the second round. nelson is an annoying clown (not nearly as bad as wes sims though) but there's no doubt in my mind that wren would have been KTFU had there been a round three.

Handily is not the word I'd choose to describe Nelson's win over Kimbo. It wasn't luck, either. He simply used his weight and Kimbo couldn't do a fuckin thing. And to be fair, it really didn't look like he was TRYING to do something to get out from under Country, either. Those shots Nelson was giving him were bar none the pussiest hits I've ever seen. He won on a technicality. He didn't get saved by getting the TKO, because Kimbo couldn't touch him, ground wise. Nelson's size was the only thing that won him that fight. It wasn't strength, it wasn't skill, it wasn't stamina and it wasn't experience. It was his fat fucking ass pinning Kimbo to the ground, helplessly.

I was hardly ever high on Kimbo before, but do you guys actually watch the shows or just read about them on silly comment threads and message boards? He's one of the most humble, eager to learn people I've ever seen on the show. He knows he's a big name in the world of fighting, but when does he ever bring it up? NEVER. He knows he's all stand up offense, with hardly any defense and, at the time of his fight, little to no ground game. Now everyone on the show is calling him the most improved, and he's more pleased with himself for putting more tools on his toolbelt for a solid foundation. Kimbo is only going to get better and better.

Roy Nelson, on the other hand, thinks he's God's gift to fucking MMA and the UFC. I'm sure he's a good fighter. He wouldn't be in the house if he wasn't, or if he didn't have the potential to be. But I got sick after about 2 seconds of his "Damn, man, I wish this fight with Kimbo wasn't in the house. This could Main Event a PPV and we could get paid BIG for it" Mother fucker you're on The Ultimate Fighter. If you could draw well for a PPV, do you think Dana White would bother giving you the opportunity to be on the show? No. You'd be making him money, because that's what Dana and the UFC are all about.

Note: I don't give a shit how fat Nelson is, either. If he makes weight, which isn't hard at all for the Heavyweight division, he can look however he wants. I just don't think he's a dominating fighter. Whenever he fights someone he can't bring to the ground, and lay and punch them, he's fucked. And don't point out this fight with Wren. He won the scorecads, he didn't win that fight. It needed a 3rd, whether Wren was gassed or not. That is NOT a reason to stop a fight from going to a Sudden Victory round.
