For someone who "needs" to speak through a translator Silva's english is suprisingly good.

Now THAT's a UFC championship fight.

I have seen just about every UFC PPV since 100 and if I'd never seen any before tonight, Silva VS Sonnen would have made me a fan. Silva deserves all the credit in the world and is rightfully the Champion...and I need to work on my picks. Good job to those who picked Dos Santos and Silva.

Wow, what a war.

Sonnen was robbed!

Rematch needs to happen before the end of the year!

Great card. I know it was only a prelim, but did anyone else think that Struve kicked Morecraft during the 2nd round handshake?

Jesus didn't tap and neither did Sonnen. I hold true that it looked like Sonnen was shaking his hand out from some sort of stinger after being put in the triangle and brushed Silva's leg. That why he looked so stunned they actually called it. There needs to be a more definitive way of tapping...like you must to it 2-3 times in succession.

Complete. Fucking. Hosejob.

No, his English isn't that good. He learned how to say a basic victory speach, and thats probably it. He can't do interviews, or answer any questions without his translator.

Sonnen tapped!! He wasn't shaking anything, he clearly tapped 2-3 times. he admitted as much in his post-fight interview.

Posted By: Guest#6785 (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 01:48 AM

You guys are idiots, he tapped more than once on his leg. Chael didn't even deny tapping.

Posted By: Guest#4925 (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 01:53 AM

anyone who knows wrestling the only way to get out of that choke is to sit on your ass and throw your leggs forward. that is exactly what chael did... i think the tap was to let silva know that it was a nice try. so quick to call the fight, i thought you had to tap 3 times...

Posted By: sonnenfan (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 01:53 AM

If he didn't mean to tap he would have said so. He said it himself that he just came up short. Silva is still the greatest.

Posted By: hhhh (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 01:55 AM

Sonnen kicked Silva all night - but the Champ took the beating (although you would think it was the other way round by looking at Sonnen's battered mug!) - and Silva's BJJ came through to beat Sonnen's Grecko Roman Wrestling. So Sonnen, who said pre-fight that Silva got his black belt from a cereal box, was tapped out by that very same Fruit Loops black belt??? Yah. Sonnen ain't got the skillz to beat the MMA (MIXED martial arts) Middleweight champ of the world! Aint no fluke. Thats MMA.

Sonnen tapped. And he tapped more then once, he just didnt hit the leg on the other ones. I for one am glad too. i can't stand his style. And i actually enjoy St. Pierre and Lesnar, they try and finish the fight at least. Sonnen just tries to do the bare minimum to have it not be stood up.

I was there live, at first it looked like Sonnen got out of it, and everybody was like WTF, then on the replay you could see him tap on Silvas thigh a couple of times. I mean it was crazy Sonnen, booed all the way up until he started kicking Silvas ass then, after the fight it was mixed for both of them. I'm really confused on the whole switching sides thing that damn quick. Yeah I like Silva because he kicks ass but he was getting boring in his last few fights, Sonnen who said he was going to bring it gets booed, brings it in the fight gets cheered then afterwards its a mixture of the crowd again. Dude should have everybodys respect after that fight.

Completely wrong. He tapped, he knew he tapped. Sure, he changed his mind after he tapped and decided to keep going for it, but he almost tapped a couple times (the shaking as you call it) and then clearly tapped the leg once.

Posted By: Cyco (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 02:07 AM

He tapped. Silva didn't take it seriously though and held on anyway, Sonnen was not going to get away with the fake tap. He pulled the same thing against Filiho, Sonnen has a history of fake tapping and trying to get away with it.

All the respect I got for Sonnen for 4 and a half rounds got erased from his fake tap bullshit. I think he should be cut. Silva was obviously injured or otherwise off anyway, Sonnen would get killed in a rematch. And a fake tap won't save you when you're unconscious.

Silva's "I was hurt" line sounds a lot like bullshit.

you are fucking retarded if u actually believe or think sonnen didnt tap

He tapped no quetion about it. When the announcers say you tap even dana white says you tap it means you tap. He tap he knows he tap. So jc the story is sonnen tapped

Posted By: deuce (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 02:17 AM

uhmm yeah, sonnen admitted it was a tap. it was the same way fedor tapped to werdum's triangle. one degected tap on the leg. the problem was Rosenthal second guessing himself and not seperating them quicker. Silva was still cranking the armbar because of the confusion. would have been a horrible way for Chael's arm to get broken

Posted By: condrab (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 02:17 AM

fuckin sonnen had it in the bag i don't know about you guys but if i was him i would have gave silva a taste of his own medicine and ran, taunted and dance all round 5 until the time ran out so he can see what its like to be beating up and disrespected by your opponent

quit fucking making excuses, watch the replay. Sonnen tapped like a bitch.

I hope all the twats who said Sonnen had no chance prior to this fight are eating some humble pie tonight. I know I am - I've always maintained that I was pulling for Sonnen to win, but I honestly believed he had little chance to do so. Not only did this fight solidify Sonnen as one of my favorite fighters, it also should've solidified GSP as the P4P king. Silva looked mortal tonight, and if not the for Hail Mary submission, would've lost his title in a decision that was nowhere near as close as Forrest/Rampage or Penn/Edgar.

Most...Ridiculous And Biased Post....EVER

Silva did NOTHING for Four Rounds and a HALF....

Sonnnen destroyed, mauled, ragdolled him like a little chihuahua in the hands of a bulldog IMO.

IF someone made both the pre fight and the fight himself EXCITING to watch and deserves all the props in the world for destroying 10-8 for four consecutive rounds the so called and ultra overrated "best fighter in the world" it's Chael Sonnen and NO ONE ELSE.

HE MADE this fight via a total dominant performance and he also gave the win to Silva on a golden plate via giving him his arms to lock the sub (something NO ONE should ever do against a Black BJJ IMO).

Anderson Silva is the worse of all the current UFC Champion, he is the most boring, disrespectful and arrogant of them all.

People bash Brock Lesnar but he backs it up inside the octagon by destroying the opposition, no matter what has been thrown at him.

Shogun is super exciting to watch and his demolition of Machida on two different occasions was GLORIOUS.

GSP is the best wrestler in the world not named Brock Lesnar and is a credible, totally dominant champion, who rarely loses a round at all.

Tonight Silva got EXPOSED BIG TIME by a guy who was 26-10 and already tapped SIX Times to guys supposedly vastly inferior to him.

If Silva was THAT Good he would have DOMINATED Sonnen from start to finish and would have made him tapping out on his own at ROUND 1 or 2.

He got OUTWRESTLED and totally SCHOOLED and can thank the sky Sonnen is no GSP or Shields when it comes to secure the win via his superior wrestling during the five WHOLE Rounds IMO.

GSP and Shields would school Silva BIG TIME.

Big MAD PROPS to CHAEL SONNEN for reviving the most dead and boring division in the whole UFC since Silva arrived.

He IS The real winner of this fight and will get his rematch soon IMO.

Hose job?! Sissy geeks who have never been in fight other than on War Craft can't imagine the pain of being hit, let alone choked out...and bullying in school doesn't count! Silva could have broke his arm if Sonnen didn't tap. And Sonnen didn't want to tap, but did so reluctantly, and Silva easing up after the tap is why Sonnen was able to get up and look puzzled. I would too if I was minutes away from being the champ and I f'd it up.

Posted By: Hip Hop Jorge (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 03:44 AM

Josh Rosenthal has fucked up two championship belts in a row now. That was in no way a tap. Watch it again, it makes no sense to tap at that point, it wasn't on tight enough then, and it's obvious. Screw the UFC.

Yeah he brushed Silva's leg. You're an idiot. He clearly slapped Silva's thigh. He either was going to tap or lose an arm.

Looked like a tap to me. I just watched the video and it look like he taps out.

Posted By: Kyle (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 04:27 AM

I agree. Tapping should have more definitive rules.. I've seen way too many fights where guys claimed they didn't tap out. Easy fix such as multiple taps would clear a lot of fight results up and leave fans feeling satisfied with the results of a fight.

Posted By: Slim T (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 05:32 AM

He tapped. He tapped only to realize that "oh I got my legs through" plus the replay showed he clearly did. He also knew he did that's why you didn't hear him complaining when he was on the mic w/ Joe Rogan. That's why it's the Championship Rounds.

Posted By: X (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 06:15 AM

Jesus didn't tap and neither did Sonnen. I hold true that it looked like Sonnen was shaking his hand out from some sort of stinger after being put in the triangle and brushed Silva's leg. That why he looked so stunned they actually called it. There needs to be a more definitive way of tapping...like you must to it 2-3 times in succession.

Complete. Fucking. Hosejob.

Posted By: JC (Guest) on August 08, 2010 at 01:39 AM

He tapped, he admitted he tapped after the fight was over and the only problem was that Silva didn't feel him tap and didn't understand why the ref was pulling them apart.

After all the over-the-top abuse Sonnen hurled - specially all that 'Brazil is a country of thieves' racist crap he spouted - to see him lose in they way he did after dominating for so long it was the most hilarious thing I've ever seen in combat sports.

Couldn't of happened to a bigger douchebag.

He still tapped and got caught, there is no controversy, nobody in the UFC apart from the internet fans, the cesspool ofcourse, disagree just to run their mouths.

Your boy lost, at least you now know that Anderson isent invincible and that he isent above and beyond his own weightclass in the UFC, a rematch should be in the making.

GSP P4P best fighter in the world? oh yes!

Posted By: Mike "The Show" Harris (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 09:59 AM

Really impressed with Roy Nelson's chin. He was taking some bombs with the best pure striker in the division and kept pressing forward. Looked really good in that loss. JDS didn't show me anything that would lead me to believe he could handle a fighter like Lesnar or Cain, but he is definitely a top flight UFC Heavyweight.

Very interesting finishes for Hughes and Guida. You would have thought those two were the ones in danger of being submitted in their fights. Hughes is in a really interesting spot in the division now. He isn't at the top, but he is clearly more than a gatekeeper. I would like to see him fight Jon Fitch next.

I know Fitch won a title shot, but has their even been a more anti-climatic rematch than him vs GSP 2? GSP dominated him for five rounds. Does anyone buy that Fitch could finish the fight, or improve enough to take three rounds? I don't.

Jon Fitch is brutal to watch. He has been endlessly protected in his matchups within the UFC for some reason. He constantly gets matched up with guys he can take down and ride out for 15 minutes. He takes down these terrible wrestlers and then just holds their arms for 3-4 minutes of a round. Sure, he "wins". It's just too obvious that he is fighting not to lose rather than win. Never advances position, never looks to finish.

The main event was surprising to say the least. Sonnen controlled the fight for 4 1/2 rounds, and looked to be cruising to a victory. It seemed like Silva was biding his time the entire fight, just waiting on Sonnen to slip up. And boy did he slip up. There is no doubt he tapped out, and there is also no doubt that he controlled Silva for 90% of the fight. Unfortunately for him, a portion of the 10% he didn't control involved him get hung up and submitted.

If the next step for Silva is Belfort, I wonder who Sonnen gets matched up with after such a solid performance on a massive stage. Sonnen/Leben? Sonnen/Belcher? Sonnen/Maia 2?

Overall 117 was a really solid event. Not as amazing as 116, but after a string of lackluster PPVs, the last two have been fantastic.

Some of you are laughable. Silva just earned the respect of every MMA fan in my book. People moaned after his last fight, yet he came out here and took a beating at times and still won. He didn't look anywhere near his best, yet Sonnen looked at his best and still couldn't finish Silva.

Silva proved again why he's the best fighter in MMA. Next up is Vitor, which will be a much better fight because it wont consist of somebody trying to grind out a win for five rounds against Silva, it'll be a PROPER war. Sonnen can get his rematch down the line, where he'll just lose again.

Silva, officialy the best fighter on the planet and there was proof tonight. Took the best of Sonnen and still walked out the winner...and ya do know that.

makes a silva fight an actual big draw, dana would love it.

but yeah he tapped. all talk about the damage silva took in previous rounds i answer with this: he took all that from sonnen and still couldn't be put away.

My challenge to you sir is have a man sit on you for 23 minutes while punching you in the face and torso and a) not give up b) have the wherewithal and talent to grap a hold of limb and pull your opponent into a submission.

Just because your mad at Silva doesn't mean he didn't deserve to win. He sustained 23 minutes of the best Sonnen had to offer and in the end he found a way to win.

I wanted Sonnen to win too and he came close. But he lost. He lives to fight another day. Get a hold of yourself, try therapy.

All you Silva fans singing his praises need to go back and re-watch that fight.

The "greatest fighter in the world" got his ass beat for 23 minutes straight.

Yeah, Sonnen made a mistake and Silva got the submission, but in no way can you take that as evidence of how "great" Silva is. He got lucky, plain and simple.

Silva was 100% exposed last night. There is no way any of you can argue otherwise. He was dominated in every phase of the game for 23 minutes by a guy no one said had a chance to make it out of the first round!

I still don't see how people cheer for him after the disgraceful performances he's put on recently. The only reason this fight was good was because of Chael Sonnen. If you think about it, Silva didn't really fight in this one, either - he was just on his back instead of dancing around.

Forget Belfort - there should be an immediate rematch for Sonnen.

Silva definitely has HEART... and now that sonnen can back up his talk i love him too! great main event

To everyone criticizing Silva:

In the world of American football, one of the most significant metrics for greatness is how you perform under pressure. The greatest quarterbacks in history are defined, at least in part, bu their ability to come back from the brink of defeat. With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Anderson Silva took the ball downfield and scored the game winning touchdown. This is why he's the greatest fighter in the world. Anyone can look spectacular when things are going their way. But after 23 minutes of getting ridden like a snowmobile, Silva had the ability to finish the fight at the last hour.

Chael Sonnen deserves all the credit in the world for doing what he did, his rating should skyrocket, and he deserves a rematch. But don't take anything away from Anderson Silva. After three dubious performances, he reminded everyone that he is absolutely the best fighter in the world.

Also.

"If you think about it, Silva didn't really fight in this one, either..."

That's the most ridiculous comment I've ever read. Clearly, you don't know how the ground game works in MMA. Watch both guys' movements. Chael and Anderson both worked for position the entire time. Sonnen threw about a million strikes, but Anderson threw some too and kept working. That neither man was completely blown is a testament to their cardio, but no...they fought, and you're a moron if you didn't see it.

I have studied Judo and BJJ for quite some time and that was a tapout if there ever was a tapout.

Chael was defending the triangle properly, couldn't pop his head out and panicked, it has happened to most people that roll.

I had a during-the-fight prediction...

Sonnen was doing great, but in the later rounds I noticed he was tiring (for obvious reasons).

The fatal error was that he began to sit on his heels while in the guard - I shouted that he was going to get triangled for sitting back like that. I'm not happy it went that way; Sonnen would have had a storybook win, much like when Couture beat Gonzaga or Silvia. It would have been fully deserving.

As far as Silva being hurt - it's part of the deal. If you chose to fight hurt, then you have no excuse.

Bottom line is that I'm a fan of both guys (and pretty much the whole card lineup), and this event was good for the sport.

Love when people wanna praise fighter A, yet their first thing to say is how much fighter B was EXPOSED.. Sonnen fought the 4 best rounds he might ever fight and deserves much respect.. However many people knew, and pointed out how he has a habit of getting submitted from the top.. Secondly anyone that calls a submission of any kind lucky, is an idiot.. Sonnen either made a mistake that was EXPOSED, or Silva just managed to use his black belt in a way Sonnen couldn't stop.. Neither option is LUCKY.. With the way Sonnen has been I'm sure he wont wanna take any moral victories.. Funny that of everyone in the UFC Shields not GSP (I think Silva would have too much weight on him) is the best option 2 dethrone Anderson..

He tapped. Silva didn't take it seriously though and held on anyway, Sonnen was not going to get away with the fake tap. He pulled the same thing against Filiho, Sonnen has a history of fake tapping and trying to get away with it.

Hey here's how I saw it Sonnen lost due yes to a mistake in last round yes he tapped and yes that triangle hurts like hell. Now for anyone that say's he beat the s@#t out of Silva there wrong look at the shots he was landing most of the time they were short with almost no power behind them because he couldn't get leverage. Now Silva on the other hand landed a hand full of blows very small number for him but almost all had the power and force to do the job this is why Sonnen came out with a broken eye from the looks of it and a swollen face; where as Silva had no swelling or bruising to speak of.
For the most part all Sonnen did was get on top of Silva and sit there no submission a temps just stay on top which was all it seemed like was trying to do so if it came to a judgment he'd win. Where Silva just wanted to put him away maybe out of concern maybe out of fear for the injured ribs he said he had in the post event interview we'll never know. All I know is Silva won a well earned victory with the submission move after being pinned for 20 minutes

Sonnen clearly won the first 4 rounds but saying it was 10 - 8 all the way is a bit much. After the first he didnt really seem to do much damage to Silva, and there were some points where silva seemes to have him hurt. Oh well good fight gy Sonnen, much better then i expected

Posted By: Guest#7612 (Guest)  on August 08, 2010 at 04:44 PM

Has anyone considered the possibility that after hearing everyone whine and complain about how easily Silva walks thru opponents, Silva decided to give Sonnen 23 minutes to see what he could do? That is my vote. Everyone complains when he wins, it matters not how he does. If he walks thru someone in less than 1 or two rounds, he is being protected by the suits, yet when he dances around, people get upset. So this time, he comes out, allows Sonnen every chance to take the belt, then decides there is little enough time left and slaps in the sub. Pure tactical genius. He is just trying to give the people what they want, other than him losing, that is. And i think the injury was just a work so people will but his half effort for 4.5 rounds. I think he plain out didn't try till the last minute of the fight.

Bottom line is that I'm a fan of both guys (and pretty much the whole card lineup), and this event was good for the sport.

Good post. Why can't people give credit where credit is due? Chael took it to Anderson tonight like no one else has. I respect all the fighters but I have so much more respect for Chael now. Even in defeat, he admitted he lost and said Silva was a champion, but didn't back down from his previous stance of wanting to be the best. He obviously knows he slipped up. Sometimes these finishes are just too good to be true. The Shogun/Machida, Fedor/Werdum, Edgar/Penn, Lesnar/Carwin, and Sonnen/Silva fights had endings that I would have never predicted.

As for Anderson, I admit he's one of my favorite fighters. But as Chael, Dana, and others said: he showed that he's a true champion tonight. He was clearly off his game and Chael was hurting him. I read a few posts that claimed Chael wasn't trying to finish the fight. I think either some of you don't watch fights closely, or are maybe too used to watching movies or pro wrestling. Chael was taking it to Anderson the whole fight. But Silva hung in there like a true warrior, and was finally able to hurt Chael in the 3rd and especially 4th rounds it looked like. Those elbows from his back were nasty! I don't know why people are saying this guy was robbed. Come on! No fan that's been watching MMA for even 2 years should be saying that. That's a ridiculous statement if I've ever heard one. Whether it's the beginning of the first round, or the end of the final round, the object is to win, and that's what Anderson did. Does Chael deserve a rematch? I never thought I'd say this, but I'd rather see an immediate rematch than Vitor get a title shot. Maybe Dana promised him a title shot, but I'd like to see Vitor beat someone like Leben, Bisping (should he beat Akiyama), or Belcher first.

Finally, why is anyone doubting that Silva was legit injured? I know ppl love to hate, but he's from a different culture. He CLEARLY wasn't the same Spider tonight. Yet all the 'net tough guys are quick to judge and call bs. Let's see how he performs in the next fight. Until then, benefit of doubt

Sonnen fought a great fight. But you got to finished. He got tapped. If Silva fights that way against Belfor he is DONE !!!

Great card. I know it was only a prelim, but did anyone else think that Struve kicked Morecraft during the 2nd round handshake?

I noticed that too. Looked like they touched gloves and he kicked him right away instead of circling to the side like every other fighter does after the glove tap. Not illegal but a real douche move.

You are one stupid motherfucker. He was hitting Silva every chance he got when he had him down, whether it was big bombs or little bitch slaps. Watch the fight agian, dick.

At the very least the mystique of Silva has been damaged greatly.

Sonnen was awesome. I can't believe a single person booed him after the match was over. If you're a fight fan, how? He was a questionable #1 contender. He showed up, made Silva fight his game. He never backed down. He was aggressive. And in the 5th round, after 23 minutes of intense combat, he took a breather. And he got caught.

Credit Silva too. He was down but never out. He never gave up and even when he had no answers for Sonnen, he just survived until he found an opening. Sonnen gave it to him, and all respect to Silva for seizing it. After being pounded for 23 minutes, name 3 other guys who would have still had the wherewithal to slap on that triangle so quickly?

Both guys deserve all credit.

Great night for fights!!

No robbery occurred if a tapout did.

There is a reason the UFC is better than Boxing and that is because you cannot count a fighter out until the last friggin second. Let me just say that I am an Anderson Silva fan and even still I must admit that he was outclassed for four and a half straight rounds. With that said, I should also remind you all out there that he is not the first, last or only person to pull off an upset victory via submission. Furthermore, its all about the match up. Some fighters match up great with certain fighters and not so well with others. Accrediting Sonnen with the title "best" is an insult to those fighters who have been busting their ass all their lives and especially after one fight. All he proved is that Anderson needs to work on his takedown defense, his cardio and maybe consider going up a weight class and putting on some muscle.

yeah silva's last few fights have been boring, but for ppl to say he sucks is bullshit. this fight woke him up and believe me we will see the old silva everyone loved in fights to come. all he needed was someone to wake him back up and thats what sonnen did. and for you ppl who say sonnen didn't tap, he tapped my friends, sorry. 1 tap or 2 taps a tap is a tap. much props to sonnen for giving silva the fight of his life, but silva proved why he is the champ. quit your bitch'n!
