411's UFC on Versus 6 Report 10.1.11
Posted by Robert Winfree on 10.01.2011
In the main event, Dominick Cruz defeated Demetrious Johnson via unanimous decision to retain the UFC Bantamweight Title. Elsewhere, Stefan Struve defeated Pat Barry via RD2 submission, Matt Wiman defeated Mac Danzig via unanimous decision, Anthony Johnson defeated Charlie Brenneman via RD1 TKO and more! Check out 411’s complete UFC on Versus 6 report for all the details!
Welcome one and all to 411's UFC on Versus 6 coverage. Should be a decent card here, and only Barry and Struve for the heavyweights so we wont have a repeat of the Travis Browne abomination. That said the second worst fight of UFC 135 wasn't the Hunt/Rothwell fight, but one at a much lighter weight class, so I'm not getting my hopes up too high. So, may the action be fast and the fights be awesome.
FACEBOOK PRELIMS
Goldberg and Rogan are our hosts for tonight
Joseph Sandoval (6-0) vs. Walel Watson(8-2)
ROUND ONE:Sandoval rocking the Dan Hardy mowhawk. Watson is much taller and has a big reach advantage. Watson with nasty inside leg kicks, one goes high and we get a break for Sandoval to recover. Big head kick from Watson, Sandoval tries to hang on but Watson swarms and the ref steps in.
Winner:Walel Watson, TKO, 1:17 Round One.
Rogan interviews Watson, this fight could easily air later on so it makes sense. Preview for the Cruz vs. Johnson title fight on Versus, they erroneously refer Johnson as a lighting striker.
Josh Neer (31-10-1) vs. Keith Wisniewski (28-11-1)
Keith comes out to "These Days" which is slightly odd, but whatever works for him.
ROUND ONE:Neer with some leg kicks as they feel each other out. Clinch with Keith against the cage. Both guys still kinda hesitant, but Neer is starting to push forward. Both guys are loosened up a little here, Neer working the body with punches from in close. Keith clinches Neer against the cage and knees the legs. They break and Neer pushes forward again. Neer is finding his range, his jab is landing pretty clean. They clinch, Neer working some good dirty boxing to the body and head. Keith grabs the thai clinch and eats a few shots to the body. Keith with a good knee to the body in the clinch as Neer with elbows and the round ends.
SCORECARD: Neer 10-9
ROUND TWO: Neer may have some broken ribs. Both guys fighting much smoother now. They clinch against the cage, good elbows by Neer and he escapes. Clinch against the cage again, Keith not going to the body as Neer uses really good short elbows. They're trading short elbows, really nasty ones too, neither guy is thinking of defense here at all. They separate and Neer pushes forward, Keith is cut up but clinches Neer against the cage. Keith is getting hit a lot. They pause the fight so the doctor can check Keith's face. Also Neer's mouthpiece feel into a trap between the cage and the mat. Doc says Keith can continue. Neer's mouthpiece is apparently under the ring. This might be a first, Rogan mentions one of the rules for MMA is for the corner to have a backup mouthpiece. Some tech went under the ring and got it and we're back to the fight. Keith shoots the single, both guys are a bloody mess. They clinch, Neer's elbows from the clinch are nasty. They break, and Keith is still bloody. Clinch again, Neer is starting to pour it on. Keith fires back, Neer goes for a standing guillotine and instantly the bloodflow increases from the pressure. Round ends.
SCORECARD: Neer 10-9
The Doctor stops the fight between rounds, a little surprised because none of those cuts looked too bad.
Winner:Josh Neer, TKO Doctor Stoppage, 5:00 Round Two
Neer didn't have any broken ribs and dedicates the fight to his Grandfather who's fighting cancer and probably not much longer for this world. Prayers to his family, cancer sucks.
The same preview for the free title fight, but I need to say again that Johnson is far from a striker.
T.J. Grant (16-5) vs. Shane Roller (10-4)
Grant comes out to "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake. Goldberg has a funny fake Nova Scotia accent.
ROUND ONE: Ref is Fernando Yamasaki. Make of that what you will. Feeling out process at first. Roller with an uppercut and Grant with a takedown. Scramble, Grant on top in side control. Elbows from Grant. Sweep by Roller who's not on top. Grant defends a guillotine and gets full guard. Scramble again and Grant to his feet. Grant punches down into full guard and punches the body. Grant hits the body as Roller keeps moving on the bottom. Grant moves into side control. Roller rolls over but gets caught in a crucifix. Grant pounding away as Roller survives the round.
SCORECARD: Grant 10-9
ROUND TWO: Apparently it's been confirmed that Fernando Yamasaki is indeed Mario Yamasaki's brother. Nice leg kick by Grant. I'm regretting my pick already. Grant with some punches and knees , Roller with a takedown against the cage. Grant stands up and they're clinched. Grant got rocked, Grant shoots but Roller grabs a guillotine. Grant escapes and gets into side control, looking for a kimura. Kind of in a sprawl position now. Roller pushes forward but winds up almost in a crucifix again. Grant lost the position and Roller is on top in full guard. Grant threw up a triangle, Roller passes into half guard. Roller looking for a guillotine, Grant defending with butterfly guard. Grant slips out and gets the back, looks for an armbar, but the clock saves Roller.
SCORECARD: Roller 10-9, but close round.
ROUND THREE: Trading some strikes, nothing landing clean. Swelling on the eye of Roller. Grant pushing forward. Nice right by Grant has Roller's nose bleeding. More strikes, Roller shoots but Grant sprawls into the cage. Roller now with the single, but Grant drops for a guillotine, Roller escapes but Grant grabs an armbar. The ref stops the fight, but no tap verbal or otherwise from Roller.
Grant says he and the ref heard Roller yell in pain, and apparently you can't do that. Nice fight for Grant, he could be a force at 155.
Rogan also interviews Roller, Roller says he didn't yell in pain but made a sound from effort. Premature stoppage maybe, but Grant could and probably would have broken the arm.
Byron Bloodworth (6-1) vs. Mike Easton (10-1)
Bloodworth took this fight on short notice and didn't make weight. Easton is a native of D.C and has some serious local support here. Easton is nicknamed "The Hulk" for good reason, they guy is insanely muscular for a 135lbs fighter.
ROUND ONE: Easton trains with Dominic Cruz, and has footwork very similar to the champ. Trading some strikes, nothing significant. Still trading, both guys looking to find the range and rhythm. Bloodworth shoots, stuffed, but they clinch against the cage with Easton against the cage. Easton reverses and begins kneeing the leg. Ref splits them, a bit early for my money. Good spinning back kick from Easton. Nice leg kick from Easton, both fighters starting to find the range now. Bloodworth shoots, instant sprawl from Easton. They trade a few strikes and the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-10 Draw
ROUND TWO: Both fighters swinging, but nothing really landing. Easton working some good leg kicks, he looks looser this round. Shot, no even close from Bloodworth. Nice combo ending with a leg kick, Bloodworth limping a bit and Easton is loose and has his range. Inside leg kick strays and we get a break for Bloodworth to recover. Bloodworth is recovered and we're back with a leg kick from Easton. They clinch with Bloodworth against the cage, now Easton against the fence. Bloodworth drops for a takedown, nothing doing. Easton with some high knees, then a BIG one to the body and Bloodworth goes down. A few more shots and the ref steps in.
Winner: Mike Easton, TKO, 4:52 Round 2
Rogan interviews Easton, who thanks Jesus Christ, pimps his afterparty, and notes that today is the anniversary of Lloyd Irvin's gym.
Preview for next Saturday's UFC 136 card with Maynard vs. Edgar III and Florian vs. Aldo. Pretty sweet video actually, apart from the "don't blink" tag line.
Michael Johnson (10-5) vs. Paul Sass (11-0)
Sass holds the world record for most fights won in a row via triangle choke apparently. The Imperial camp that Johnson and Rashad fight out of has apparently nicknamed them the "blackzilians"
ROUND ONE: Sass tries a flying knee, doesn't connect. Sass trying to pull guard, though fortunately not in the butt scoot technique. Trading strikes, big knee from Johnson and follow up strikes. Sass survives, Johnson apparently doesn't want to fight on the ground at all. Trade strikes, and Sass finally gets guard. He pulled Johnson into mount and attacks a leg. Sass has a good heel hook in, tries to adjust the grip, does so and Johnson taps.
Winner: Paul Sass, Submission Heel Hook, 3:00 Round One
Rogan interviews Sass who now has three consecutive heel hook submissions, maybe going for another world record.
Preview for UFC 136 again, followed by the preview for UFC on Versus coming up next.
Look inside the locker room of Mighty Mouse, he could well be the camp if/when the UFC introduces flyweights. We also look inside the locker room of Dominic Cruz as he works wrestling. Not sure how effective that will be against "lighting striker" Johnson.
Yves Edwards (40-17-1) vs. Rafaello Oliveira (14-4)
Oliveira is a jui-jitsu black belt, but Edwards hasn't been submitted in over five years.
ROUND ONE: Oliveira works kicks early. He presses Edwards against the cage. Oliveira backs away and we're standing. Trading strikes, nothing really significant. Oliveira pushing forward but not landing much, Yves trying to counter. Good body kick from Edwards. Edwards getting loose, nice leg kicks from him. Still trading strikes, but nothing really landing. Oliveira shoots but nothing doing. Nice exchange to end the round. Close round.
SCORECARD: 10-10 draw
ROUND TWO: Edwards much looser this round, landing some leg kicks. Oliveira throws a combination and pulls guard, Edwards defends and gets back to his feet. Edwards starting to get the better of exchanges. Big right by Edwards, Oliveira scrambles and survives for now. Big head kick but Edwards, Oliveira scrambles again but Edwards takes the back and pounds him out.
Winner: Yves Edwards, TKO, 2:44 Round Two
Rogan interviews Edwards who mentions he thinks he's faster than about everyone out there. Ultimately though he's just a man, in a cage, fighting in front of fans and asking them to love him.
Another hype video for the Main Card, which I'll be covering as well. That should do it for the Facebook prelims, I'll see you guys for the Main Card in a bit.
Interesting side note, as I'm waiting for the Main Card to start I caught the end of Walking Tall on Spike, in the bottom right corner they have a reminder that Bellator is live tonight on MTV2.
Main Card
Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan remain our hosts and they hype what's coming up, including the first free title fight since Rampage and Henderson fought to unify the PRIDE and UFC light-heavyweight titles. They touch on all the other fights tonight.
We go to commercial before the Danzig and Wiman fight.
A quick word from both fighters and back to commercial, when they come back the fight should be on.
Mac Danzig (21-8-1) vs. Matt Wiman (13-6)
ROUND ONE: No fight banner for Wiman, and it looks like he's got only one guy in his corner. Fernando Yamasaki is the ref and gets some boos after earlier. Wiman coming forward early, they tie up, nice body shots by both men. Wiman against the cage now, Danzig tries the head kick but gets taken down, Wiman on top in full guard. Scramble, Danzig back to his feet and defends a shot by Wiman, Danzig tries for a guillotine and a good flurry once Wiman escapes. They separate, both guys trading blows. Nice elbows in close range from Wiman when they tie up. Wiman moves forward again, both guys still throwing, they tie up and another couple of elbows from Wiman. Clinch against the cage, Danzig working good body punches, Wiman lands a knee as they break that puts Danzig on the proverbial bicycle. Danzig against the cage, Wiman still throwing elbows. Wiman looks for the takedown, defended, Danzig against the fence as the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Wiman
ROUND TWO: Wiman landing a pretty good leg kick, both guys have nice body punches working here. Wiman against the fence, he's still landing good elbows from the clinch. Wiman with a good lead left to the body before they clinch and he goes back to landing elbows. Danzig with a takedown from the clinch into half guard. Danzig sneaks towards side control, Wiman gets guard back. Wiman looking for a triangle, switches to an armbar, very close, similar position to the earlier Grant and Roller fight. Danzig escapes and starts looking for ground and pound. Danzig in half butterfly guard, Wiman tries for a kimura, probably more of a sweet attempt than a real submission. Wiman lets it go. More shots from Danzig as Wiman wall walks back to his feet. Danzig throwing, both guys throwing at close range. Straight right by Wiman. Clinch again, elbows from Wiman and punches from Danzig. Wiman shoots, misses, nice counter punches from Danzig. Wiman pressed against the cage and throws some elbows as the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Danzig close round though
ROUND THREE: Wiman comes out pressing forward and swinging. Clinch again, break, leg kick by Wiman. Danzig against the cage, Wiman lands a good right before they clinch and Wiman throws some more elbows. More elbows from Wiman before Danizg escapes. Wiman throwing a lead left to the body, they clinch and Wiman is against the cage now. More elbows from Wiman and body shots from Daniz. Both guys really swinging now. Wiman shoots, stuffed, Danizg on top now. Wiman's nose is bleeding. Wiman turns and Danizg looks to take the back. Gets one hook, Wiman looking to shake him off, and does. Wiman on top now in half guard. Wiman looking for elbows from the top. Danzig has pretty gnarly hematoma going on, similar to Hominick really. Danzig regains guard, Wiman keeps elbowing when he can. Wiman passes, stands, Danzig wall walks and we're clinched again. Both guys still swinging. Wiman drops down again, looking to secure the round with a takedown. Danzig with a guillotine, tight, but Wiman gives the thumbs up as the horn sounds.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Wiman
Winner: Matt Wiman, Unanimous Decision (29-28x3)
Wiman with Joe, Wiman references his loss to Denis Siver while discussing the judges. He just tries to fight with all his heart from start to finish.
Before the next fight Rogan will interview Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar. Please let this be better than the last one of these they did. And we head to commercial.
Yes, sadly we're doing the tandem interview set up. Rogan asks Edgar about the first round of their last fight. Edgar says it was preparation and his team that helped him survive the first round onslaught. Rogan asks Maynard how frustrating it is to be in his situation. Maynard says he's been pumped since the second fight. Edgar says he's walking away with the win, Maynard says it could be a war or it could be quick but he's taking the belt.
Well, that wasn't as much of a train wreck as Jones and Rampage at least.
They pimp next weeks card, including two title fights, Stann and Sonnen, plus the rematch between Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan.
Brenneman says he's looking for submissions, and Johnson wants to give Brenneman the worst headache of his life.
We head to commercial.
Anthony Johnson (9-3) vs. Charlie Brenneman (14-2)
ROUND ONE: Johnson has 8 inches of reach and 4 in height advantage. Johnson throws a kick, Brenneman tries to shoot but nothing doing. Johnson sprawls well and lands some shots from the sprawl position. Johnson really starting to land strikes, Brenneman needs to move and try to get out of this position. Johnson moves to one side, good knees to the body. Rumble spins towards the back, Brenneman gets one leg up then turns and gets Johnson in half guard. Brenneman looks for a guillotine, but not gonna get it from half guard. Johnson throwing body shots. Brenneman kicks him away, Johnson lands a big head kick and the ref stops it. Brenneman is upset. It was a pretty flush head kick and he looked kind of out of it, but hitting the canvas seemed to wake him up.
Winner:Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, TKO, 2:49 Round One
Rogan interviews Johnson. Apparently Brenneman was the first fighter to make Johnson nervous before a fight. I think if the ref was on the other side of Rumble and Brenneman he might have let it go a bit.
A quick pimp for Florian fighting Aldo. Anyone else think Florian has no way to win that one? The tallest heavyweight fights the shortest in the next fight. At least these are two heavyweights who wont just circle each other for fifteen minutes.
Pat Barry (6-3) vs. Stefan Struve (21-5)
ROUND ONE: Struve is a foot taller and has 9.5 inches of reach advantage. Circling for now, both guys kinda hesitant at first because the first mistake could well spell the end of this fight. Struve with a body kick. Inside leg kick by Barry. Barry is having problems with the height, his fists have a difficult time reaching Struve's head. Struve throwing punches, Barry throwing counter leg kicks. Barry is really having a hard time punching towards the head of Struve. Barry punches the body, and shows a head kick. Slow pace so far, maybe I spoke too soon about this fight not sucking. Barry just misses a big left hook. Barry landing a good inside leg kick, but not much happening.
SCORECARD: 10-10 draw, pretty uneventful round.
ROUND TWO The ref admonishes both guys to step it up. Struve throwing some more kicks, Barry threw a good left hook that landed. Barry switches to southpaw, throws a left high kick. Back to orthodox, Barry closing the distance and landing a good leg kick. Good leg kick from Struve. Barry should be punching the body here, lands a good leg kick. They clinch, Barry escapes without eating a knee. Barry is moving forward, bit too much head hunting. Struve throws a knee, Barry with a left hook. Clinch and Struve is looking for a guillotine. Barry actually defends it well and gets into side control. Moves back and Struve with a deep triangle. Barry with a huge slam, but doesn't break the choke. Barry has nothing left and taps.
Winner: Stefan Struve, Submission Triangle Choke, 3:22 Round Two
Rogan is with Struve and we replay the slam. It's a nice slam, but Struve caught much of the impact with his left elbow. He asks for a round of applause for Barry.
We see Jon Jones in the crowd and he's all smiles. The main even is next, and should be a good one.
Goldberg and Rogan pimp the main event to fill some time. Now to a promo package, Rogan surmises that this could be the fastest paced fight in UFC history. Now that I think about it he could be right. These are two fast guys.
Cool, we get the walk ins for this fight. Rogan mentions Cruz has a mountain of opponents waiting to face him. I'm not sure about that one. Cruz rather awesomely comes out to "Hells Bells" by AC/DC. He's also wearing headphones during the walk to the octagon. Rogan is with me, wanting to know what Cruz is listening too, especially since his walkout music is awesome. Dominick has allowed just 3 of 24 takedowns in his career. That's pretty crazy.
Dominick Cruz (18-1) vs. Demetrious Johnson (14-1) for the UFC Bantamweight Championship
ROUND ONE: Cruz only has two inches of reach, but his height should play a part too. Neither guy touches gloves. Both guys moving well. Cruz working the leg kick Johnson moving forward though. Johnson pushes forward, shoots, stuffed. Cruz with punches and a good judo throw. Johnson tries to get up, Cruz presses the takedown in top position. Cruz passes into side control. Cruz throws a few knees to the body. My computer died, so I hope I didn't miss anything. Cruz is taking the back, Johnson defends, shoots, gets a momentary takedown and they're standing again. Some nice exchanges to end the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Cruz
ROUND TWO: Johnson is fast and cutting angles. Cruz with a takedown against the cage. Johnson trying to wall walk, gets to his feet and a knee from Cruz. Now Cruz against the fence. Another knee from Cruz to the body, they separate. Johnson is definitely fast and throwing punches at the champ. Johnson shoots again, stuffed. Cruz presses Johnson to the cage and lands a knee to the body. They're trading knees to the body here against the fence. Cruz shoots, but Johnson defends well. Cruz against the fence now and Johnson drops down again, but can't get it. Cruz again knees the body, then knees the head on the break. Johnson pushes forward and throws punches, not landing but good for closing distance. Johnson throws a flying knee. Cruz trying to work the jab, but both of these guys are fast. Good knee by Cruz, Johnson shoots but Cruz avoids. Cruz gets the takedown against the fence. Cruz throwing elbows, but not much of it is effective. Cruz will finish on top.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Cruz
ROUND THREE: They trade kicks, Johnson's corner wants more combinations and less shots until Cruz gets tired. Trading some combos so far, good left from Johnson. Cruz shoots, Johnson almost throws him, Cruz cinches and gets the back. HUGE german suplex and gets the back. Johnson is flattened out, Cruz throwing left punches and looking for the choke. He's got the gable choke, Johnson escapes for now. Cruz looks for it again, now more of a neck crank. Johnson escapes. Wow. Johnson throws and pushes Cruz against the fence. Cruz just looked at the clock as Johnson comes forward. Cruz throwing knees and shoots for a double. Cruz gets the takedown into full butterfly guard. Johnson with elbows to the body from the bottom. Cruz with a good elbow to the head. I think Cruz is looking to ride out the round. Johnson looking to escape, and stands up pressing Cruz to the cage. They'll end the round here.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Cruz
ROUND FOUR: Cruz looks a little more tired than Johnson here. Johnson lands a good leg kick. Trading kicks here, both guys moving back and forth very well. Johnson southpaw, then orthodox. Cruz pushing forward, lands a good leg kick and solid jab. Johnson pushes forward, they trade some punches. Johnson lands a good left and shoots. Stuffed, Cruz pushes Johnson against the fence and takes him down. Johnson throwing knees to the body from half guard. Johnson trying to explode, Cruz passes right to mount. Cruz throwing body shots, Johnson tries to hip escape, nothing doing. Johnson gets back to guard, tries to get back up but can't. Then does, Cruz was holding a leg, but they separate. Johnson pushing forward, Cruz looking a little more tired here. Clinch against the cage, Cruz kneeing the head, then takes Johnson down. Half guard for Johnson, a few elbows from Johnson and they break. The round ends against the cage with Cruz holding a leg.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Cruz
ROUND FIVE: Johnson needs a finish here. Johnson pushing forward hard, throwing punches and pressing Cruz against the cage. Cruz gets the back and german suplex's Johnson again, into side control. Johnson gets half guard, Cruz throwing some punches but nothing damaging. Full guard now. Cruz trying to pass and throws some elbows. Johnson gets his back to the cage and is looking to wall walk. Cruz just smothering him right now. Johnson back to his feet but clinched against the cage. They break and Johnson throws, both fighters miss with some punches. Johnson pushes forward and lands a right, Cruz tries a throw but Johnson is back up. Johnson tries another takedown, gets thrown, both back up again. They're trading some punches now. Johnson swings again, Cruz ducks under and takes him down. Full mount for Cruz with 40 left. Johnson turns, Cruz trying for the choke again. Johnson shakes him off, but has 15 seconds to finish it. Both swinging towards the finish, then Cruz gets another take down to end the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Cruz
Winner: And STILL UFC Bantamweight Champion, Dominick Cruz, Unanimous decision (50-45x2, 49-46)
Johnson has some nasty swelling on his left cheek.
Rogan interviews Cruz, who mentions he had to out wrestle him because of Johnson's pace and that he wanted to show more of his game. Rogan again mentions the long line of challengers.
Rogan now with Mighty Mouse, yeah that swelling is pretty nasty. Johnson isn't sure when the damaging shot landed, and says he was surprised by Dominick's strength. He says he let Cruz hold him down too much and he didn't push through like he was supposed to.
Well, that was a damn fine fight between those two. I'm going to ice my hands soon, those two had a fast pace. Thanks for joining me for coverage.
I'm not sure if it transfers to MMA, but in BJJ a yell in pain is akin to a verbal submission since you've conceded that your opponent has you in a very bad position and you're just refusing to tap.

Nice entertaining fights tonight. I hope the recapper meant he hopes we get an even better fight between Edgar and Maynard this time because if he was implying that the second fight was anything but amazing, he may need to start recapping something else. : )

10-10 draw?

He meant that he hopes the lives head to head interview is better than the Jones/Jackson one is all...nothing to do with the fight, it was exceptional.
Posted By: Guest#9881 (Guest) on October 02, 2011 at 12:54 AM
I think he was referring to the interview rather than the fight.
Posted By: BN (Guest) on October 02, 2011 at 08:28 AM
Minor thing...can the recapper put the weight class alongside the names and records in future, just for aestetics and reference please?

In MMA you submit by tapping your opponent or the mat, or by yelling "TAP!" or something similar. A yell in pain does not equal a verbal submission in MMA. The ref could've jumped in to stop the fight if Roller's arm had been broken but that wasn't the case. The referee was wrong to stop the fight that soon and is a disgrace to the Yamasaki family.
Posted By: Alan (Guest) on October 02, 2011 at 10:05 AM
good card... subpar main event... It's hard to watch such a one sided fight not get finished, but Cruz hasn't finished a fight in almost 2 years so I should've expected it
Posted By: Guest#3823 (Guest) on October 02, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Mario really screwed up the finish to the Rumble/Spaniard fight...it definitely wasn't over at that point, but Charlie is probably glad it was stopped...he would've got KTFO shortly after.

Disagree Elephant, the stoppage was good. An already wobbly fighter got kicked square in the face and dropped. He was done. His hands were down, he was barely standing, and he got kicked in the mug and he went down like a ton of bricks. Bricks made of poop.
