PRELIMINARY MATCHES (UN-AIRED)
Ryan Crouch defeated Frederick Lumpkin by TKO (Punches) in round 2.
MAIN CARD MATCHES (SHOWTIME)
INTRODUCTION:
We are live from Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. Your commentators are Mauro Ranallo and Pat Miletich.
Welterweight bout: Tom Gallicchio (170) vs. Daniel Madrid (165)
ROUND ONE Madrid catches Gallicchio coming in and then adds a few more smacks to start this off. Gallicchio takes Madrid down and moments later is submitted via belly-down arm bar. Nice!
OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Daniel Madrid by submission (arm bar) at 0:48 of round 1.
Welterweight bout: Yasubey Enomoto (168) vs. Josh Thorpe (166)
ROUND ONE Thorpe comes out swinging. He shoots for a takedown. Enomoto locks up a triangle choke and finishes this one in less time than it took for both men to walk out to the ring. This is an example of the ninja skills Enomoto was alluding to.
OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Yasubey Enomoto by submission (triangle choke) at 1:07 of round 1.
Middleweight bout: Arthur Guseinov (185) vs. Eddie Arizmendi (186)
ROUND ONE Guseinov with a spinning back kick. Arizmendi attempts a takedown but Guseinov reverses on him and snatches his leg for a third first round submission. Good grief, don't blink or you'll miss the whole event!
OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Arthur Guseinov by submission (ankle lock/heel hook) at 0:50 of round 1.
Interim Heavyweight Title bout: Kenny Garner (255) vs. Maxim Grishin (220)
ROUND ONE Garner storms across the ring throwing rights and lefts. Garner backs Grishin into a corner. Grishin returns fire with strikes of his own. Garner knees Grishin in the groin. Grishin with a left kick. Garner staggers Grishin with a right. Garner attempts a takedown but can't keep him down. Grishin plants a knee on Garner. Garner ties Grishin up. Garner attacks the liver with his left hand. Grishin delivers a knee to Garner's face. Grishin tosses Garner but Garner is back up. Grishin lands an uppercut. Garner misses with an overhand right. Garner and Grishin exchange punches and knees. Garner gets a trip takedown but is almost out of time. We are off to the second round for the first time tonight.
SCORECARD: Garner 10-9
ROUND TWO Grishin misses a jumping knee. Garner plows into Grishin forcing him against the ropes again. Garner knees Grishin but Grishin catches and tries to take him down. After a bit of a struggle, Garner gets a takedown. Garner is in guard but since he can't progress he just lets Grishin stand up. Garner backs Grishin up against the ropes again. The fighters exchange knee strikes. Grishin gets the takedown. Grishin stands up and easily pass to side control and then full mount. Grishin attempts an arm bar but he runs out of time.
SCORECARD: Grishin 10-9
ROUND THREE Immediately we're back to where we've been for almost the entire fight. Garner has Grishin against the ropes. Grishin gets a takedown. Garner tries to escape by sliding out of the ring. Instead of repositioning them, the ref just stands them up. Garner presses Grishin into a corner. Garner lands a series of hard punches. Grishin shoots for a takedown but Garner steps out of it. Grishin looks exhausted. Grishin throws Garner but Garner ends up in Grishin's guard. Grishin reverses and takes top position. Garner reverses now and takes top position. Ranallo just mentioned Jim Ross' phrase, "bowling shoe ugly." Grishin lands an illegal kick to the head and the fight is paused. The round ends anyway.
SCORECARD: Garner 10-9
ROUND FOUR Garner backs Grishin up who then immediately attempts to pull guard. Garner appears willing to oblige. Garner gets a side mount crucifix and now Grishin slides under the rope. The ref, who is terribly inconsistent here, repositions them in the center and then stands them up anyway. Garner plows through a barrage of strikes to resume laying on Grishin. Grishin gets a takedown but Garner ends up in top position. Garner postures up and hammers on Grishin. They appear to be stalling so the ref stands them up. Grishin flops and rolls out of the ring again. Garner ends the round right where he began it, with Grishin against the rops.
SCORECARD: Garner 10-8
ROUND FIVE Well, here we go again. Guess where Garner and Grishin are right now…you betcha, Garner has Grishin pressed against the ropes. Grishin attempts a standing guillotine. Grishin turns things around and now has Garner against the ropes. Grishin gets a takedown. Grishin gets into quarter mount. Grishin grabs an arm bar. Grishin transitions into a triangle choke. Garner escapes. Garner hammers on Grishin from side control. Grishin taps out according to the ref.
OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER AND NEW INTERIM HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION – Kenny Garner by submission (strikes) at 4:07 of round 5.
Light Heavyweight Title bout: Champ Vinny Magalhaes (204) vs. Mikhail Zayats (205)
ROUND ONE Magalhaes starts with a series of kicks. Magalhaes tries to tie up Zayats with a Thai plum but Zayats backs away. Zayats presses Magalhaes against the ropes. Magalhaes ends up on his back attempting to shoot on Zayats. Both men stand up. Zayats stumbles Magalhaes with a leg kick. Zayats has Magalhaes against the ropes. Magalhaes attempts a takedown and Zayats blatantly holds the ropes to stay up. Zayats attempts a superman punch and follows up with another hard leg kick. That's the end of that round.
SCORECARD: Zayats 10-9
ROUND TWO Zayats kicks Magalhaes and he falls down. Magalhaes is having difficulty landing something of consequence. Zayats lands a punch kick combo and takes Magalhaes down. He stands in guard as he does not want to grapple with the champ. Zayats kicks Magalhaes in the hand. Magalhaes takes Zayats down and gets full mount. Zayats sweeps and is now in full guard. Zayats scrambles and escapes. Magalhaes is not checking kicks. Zayats takes him down. The ref stands them up. Zayats presses forward with strikes.
SCORECARD: Zayats 10-9
ROUND THREE Takedown attempt from Magalhaes goes nowhere. Magalhaes delivers a vicious head kick and finishes him off with straight ground and pound. That's all folks!
OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER AND STILL CHAMPION – Vinny Magalhaes by TKO (strikes) at 1:13 of round 3.
