Posted by Alex Watt on 06.08.2014

INTRODUCTION:

It's a historic night for the sport tonight as Cage Warriors present two main cards of fights in one massive night of Mixed Martial Arts action from The Forum in London, England. "Super Saturday" promises to be the biggest UK MMA event of the year.

Before we get to the fights, you should check out my interviews with Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan and Rosi Sexton (full uncut version here), who returns to the cage tonight.

PRELIMINARY FIGHTS (FACEBOOK)

Light Heavyweight bout: Michael Ravenscroft (196.8lbs, 1-2) vs. Darren Stewart (203lbs, 0-0)

In my first inside scoop of the night, my colleagues on press row inform me that Darren Stewart had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction at the weigh-ins yesterday. I suppose exposing your genitals is one way of playing mind games with your opponent…

Stewart is dropping bombs on Ravenscroft. The referee takes a close look but he lets them carry on as Ravenscroft fights back with upkicks. Ravenscroft looks completely out of his depth here though. Impressive.

Jake Bostwick enters, as usual, wearing full Bane get-up. If he wins tonight, I hope he does his whole post-fight interview in the Tom Hardy "Bane" voice. It's only right. A bit of a hold up with Bostwick's gloves but, once he gets in the cage, he gets a raucous reception from his hometown crowd.

ROUND ONE: Hard leg kick from Bostwick. Body kick from Thorensen. Bostwick punching well to the body. Big right hook from Bostwick wobbles Thorensen and some more hard punches follow. SCORECARD: Thorensen, 10-9

ROUND TWO: Touch of the gloves. Thorensen goes for the takedown but Bostwick slips his leg out and circles away. Thorensen ducks into a Bostwick jab. Leg kick from Bostwick. Leg kick from Thorensen. Brutal uppercut from Bostwick snaps Thorensen's head back. That's why "Brutal" is his nickname, I suppose. Thorensen gets a desperation takedown. Thorenson moves to north-south position and now back to half guard. Thorensen is all over Bostwick on the ground. In side control now. Thorensen is looking to trap Bostwick's arm and land punches from the crucifix. A Bostwick scramble and some wild punching from his back gets the crowd excited. Thorensen back on top though and in half guard. Thorensen working for the kimura. He steps over and wraps his legs around Bostwick's head for more leverage. He pulls out the arm but Bostwick rolls with him and survives the round, much to the delight of the crowd.

SCORECARD: Thorensen, 10-9 (20-18 overall)

ROUND THREE: This is very much the classic "striker vs. grappler". Bostwick swings wildly and avoids the subsequent takedown attempt. A heavy Bostwick leg kick hurt Thorensen and he goes down in pain. Bostwick waves him back up. Thorensen looks like he's working on one leg now and his takedowns are being easily shrugged off by Bostwick. Uppercut from Bostwick. Another takedown avoided. And another. OFFICIAL RESULT: Jake Bostwick, Majority Decision (28-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Jake Bostwick is a lucky boy… He does not do the post-fight interview in the Bane voice. Poor.

Welterweight bout: Ben Alloway (170.5lbs, 13-5) vs. Mohsen Bahari (170.2lbs, 7-1)

These two got very heated at the weigh-ins so I'm expecting fireworks in this fight.

ROUND ONE: Cautious start from both fighters. Good leg kick from Bahari. Solid one-two from Bahari. Alloway answers with a straight right. Hard overhand right from Alloway staggers bahari. Alloway follows up with a takedown attempt but Bahari defends against the cage. They break and Bahari misses a head kick. Another good leg kick from Bahari and a solid jab. A lot of swinging and missing from both men. Alloway fails on a takedown attempt and Bahari pushes him against the fence and gets a takedown of his own. Bahari on top in half guard but Alloway holds on well to prevent him from landing anything. They're back on their feet and Alloway lands some good punches at the end of the round. Maybe those fireworks will transpire in the second round, eh?

SCORECARD: Alloway, 10-9

ROUND TWO: A cautious start again. A solid exchange in the pocket and a good Bahari leg kick. This is not the kind of fight you need at 10:45pm of a long card, I'm afraid. Good leg kick from Alloway. Takedown from Bahari but Alloway pops back up. They clinch and Bahari lands some good knees to the body and now the head. Bahari lifts Alloway for a slam but Alloway holds on. Bahari is trying to drag Alloway to the mat but he can't manage it. Alloway, whose face is bloodied up, clinches with Bahari as the round ends. I think the fairest way to describe this is "a grueling fight".

SCORECARD: Bahari, 10-9 (19-19 overall)

ROUND THREE: Touch of the gloves. Good leg kick from Alloway. They clinch and Bahari lands some solid punches. Head kick from Alloway on the break misses. Solid left jab from Alloway. Bahari returns the favour with a left jab of his own. A missed head kick gets a nod of recognition from Alloway. That is a nasty cut on Alloway's head. That may have been caused by those Bahari knees earlier. Not a classic this one. They exchange weak punches as the round comes to an end.

SCORECARD: Bahari, 10-9 (29-28 overall)

OFFICIAL RESULT: Mohsen Bahari, Split Decision (30-27, 27-30, 30-27)

It's rare that you see a split decision with such wildly different scores but this fight was so dull and close that it's hard to even make a "Clucky" joke. Let's just all forget that fight ever happened and move on with our lives. Hopefully, Marshman and Omoyele can turn things around.

Marshman goes for the armbar from his back but Omoyele slips out. Omoyele with more punches but Marshman throws his legs up for the armbar again. He locks it in and Omoyele taps out!

OFFICIAL RESULT: Jack Marshman, Submission (Armbar), 4:51 of Round 1

We're straight into the main event, as CWFC recognize that the night is running longer than expected.

This should be a cracking fight to close things out. Warburton beat Ray by Unanimous Decision last time they fought in BAMMA in March 2013. Warburton relied on his experience and wrestling that night but Ray is much improved since then which should make for a fascinating watch.

SCORECARD: Ray, 10-9 (49-46 Ray overall)

OFFICIAL RESULT: Stevie Ray, Split Decision (50-45, 47-48, 48-47)

Ray gets the decision and reclaims the belt he lost last year!

And that's all from Cage Warriors 69: Super Saturday. Dodgy wi-fi aside, it was a great night of fights.

The first main card was definitely the stronger of the two, which isn't the way the CWFC team would have preferred it, but it was an interesting concept which paid off on the night. Next summer, to help the flow of the show, Cage Warriors might be better just doing a 12 fight main card, rather than splitting it into two parts.

There may be some flaws to iron out but, regardless, it was a great concept and a great night for UK MMA. Here's to next year's Super Saturday!

Thanks for joining me tonight and remember 411 for all your MMA needs.
