411's Elite XC: Destiny Report 02.10.07
Posted by Larry Csonka on 02.10.2007

Introduction:
Welcome one and all to another edition of My Take on MMA. This time we will recap the debut show for the Elite XC promotion. They had a series of matches on the Internet before the "LIVE" show, which aired on Showtime. This show was headlined by another "Shamrock vs. Gracie" battle as Frank Shamrock battled Renzo Gracie. Sit back and relax and I hope that you enjoy the show.

ELITE XC Destiny 2.11.07:

  • Dark Match/Internet Only Results:
-Tim Persey defeated Bo Cantrell @ 1:35 of Round 1 via standing punches
-Mike Pyle defeated Ross Ebanez @ 1:56 of Round 1 via choke out
-Javier Vazquez defeated Adriano Periera via split decision
-Edson Berto defeated John David Shackelford in Round 2 via referee stoppage
-Riki Fukuda defeated Chris Gates @ 1:18 of Round 1 via tapping to punches

-We see Shamrock arriving and they talk about him Humbling TITO and Caesar Gracie.

-They then discuss Renzo defeating Carlos Newton and Pat Miletich in the last year.

-Dude, they have a nice set with a big ass fire-breathing dragon, ok, that's cool.

-Hot ring chicks bring out the American and Brazilian flags. They have along ramp way to the "Circular Cage."

-Our announcers are Mauro Ranallo, Bill Goldberg and Saved by the Bell's AC SLATER~! Apparently they had Guy Mezger calling the pre-show matches. Why he would call those and not the actually PPV I will never know. I mean, God forbid we have a fighter calling fights when Slater has nothing else to do.

-Goldberg puts over the importance of the main event, due to the family battle.

-Jay Glazer is now out there to announce, maybe Slater had a date with Kelly. They all run down the card.

-We get a video package for Noons vs. Crazy Horse.

-Krazy Horse is on his cell phone for his entrance, I expect nothing less.

  • LIGHTWEIGHT BOUT - Charles Bennett (17-10-2) vs. K.J. Noons (3-0):

-Larry's Pre-Fight Prediction: KJ Noons (RD 2 Submission)

-The Fight: ROUND ONE: Here we go. They circle and Bennett misses a big shot. Bennett in for another shot and misses. Noons with a kick and Bennett back with a right. Bennett with a leg kick and smiles. Leg kick by Noons. Another. Bennett back with a leg kick and Noons answers right back. Bennett in with a right and Noons back with the leg kick. Bennett with a combo, a leg kick and Noons with a counter jab. Noons continues with the leg kicks. Good right by Noons and another. They clinch, rights by both and Noons gets away. Noons in, Bennett with a body shot and then catches him with a huge right and DROPS him and follows up with shots, and Herb Dean stops the fight.

    Bennett celebrates.

OFFICIAL DECISION: Charles Bennett wins @ 3:43 of round 1 via ref stoppage (TKO)

***Personal Enjoyment Index: (1-10) 6.0. Noons was dominating early, but Bennett caught him and that was all. Overall it was pretty exciting stuff.

-Glazer is with Bennett. Bennett says not to talk smack to him. He knew he would KO him because Noons tried to talk shit. Bennett loves the boos because he knows they love him. He walks us through the replay "OH SHIT…I took him out!" He admits that the leg kicks hurt like hell.

-We see the ladies warming up and then get a video package for them.

  • Gina Carano (3-0) vs. Julie Kedzie (8-4):

-Larry's Pre-Fight Prediction: Gina Carano (RD 2 TKO)

-The Fight: The ladies fights are 3, 3-minute rounds instead of 5-minute rounds.

ROUND ONE: Carano tries leg kicks to begin, but Kedzie lands first. Straight kick by Kedzie, but Carano back with leg kicks. They clinch and Kedzie takes her to the cage and a knee by Kedzie and then a right. Clinch again, knees by Carano and to the ground. Carano to her feet and she doesn't want to go to the ground. Good right by Carano. They clinch and Kedzie takes her down, but Carano gets her back. Kedzie to her back, she works for an arm but Carano to her feet, smartly. Good left by Carano. Another right connects. Left hook by Carano, jabs and a right. Leg kick and a high kick connects. A good right connects as the round ends.

LARRY'S SCORE CARD: Strong first round, Carano mostly stayed away from the ground and connected with good strikes. Carano 10-9.

ROUND TWO: Carano in with a right to start. She stalks Kedzie, Kedzie with a spin kick and the clinch. Takes Carano down and gets a closed guard. Carano on top, Kedzie with shots and tries to work, and Carano escapes. Kedzie catches a high kick and answers with strong rights. Leg kick by Carano, Kedzie shoots and takes her down. Carano had her back and lets her up. Carano with rights and leg kicks now. They clinch, knees by Carano and a HUGE right takes her down, she follows with a right and then backs off and doesn't finish. Leg kick again and Kedzie clinches and takes Carano down as the round ends.

LARRY'S SCORE CARD: Carano is still landing strikes at will and Kedzie right eye is swelling. Kedzie had some good counters, but Carano still takes the round 10-9. 20-18 overall for Carano.

ROUND THREE: Final round begins and Kedzie with leg kicks. Carano with a leg kick, take down by Kedzie and she gets side control. Carano holds on while Kedzie gets a few shots to the ribs. Carano tries to battle out, but Kedzie almost gets a choke, but Carano to her feet. Kedzie shoots and gets a knee but no take down. Straight kick by Kedzie. Carano largely staying away as we are in the final minute. Good jabs by Carano and a leg kick. Kedzie answers with one of her own. Kedzie tries to shoot in, but Carano with a knee stops that. Kedzie tries one more and the round ends as they hit the mat.

They got a standing ovation and deservedly so.

LARRY'S SCORE CARD: Kedzie tried hard the last round, but Carano largely coasted. Kedzie was close to submission, and in my opinion had the better round. 10-9 Kedzie, overall 29-28 for Carano.

OFFICIAL DECISION: Unanimous Decision: Gina Carano - 29-28, 29-28, 30-27

***Personal Enjoyment Index: (1-10) 8.5. While not a technical masterpiece it was one a hell of a fight. They really went all out and there was never any down time. Good stuff.

-Glazer is with both ladies. They joke around and ask the crowd if they want more and they applaud. Kedzie says the women have arrived in MMA. They walk through some of the replays. Carano is very gracious in victory. Kedzie says Gina is the real deal. A very classy display by both ladies.

-Goldberg says they have paved the way for more ladies in MMA. Goldberg says he doesn't want hit by Gina.

-We get a video package for Gracie vs. Shamrock.

-Glazer is with Renzo. He says if he beats Shamrock, it gets him ready for the next one, maybe another Shamrock. Renzo says Shamrock is greatly conditioned and has heavy hands, so he'll have to avoid them to keep his good looks. Gracie came across as very funny and personable. Most of the stuff has come across as scripted tonight as far as the guys talking, so this was a nice change.

-We get a video package for David Loiseau vs. Joey Villasenor.

  • MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUT - David Loiseau (14-6) vs. Joey Villasenor (22-5):

-Larry's Pre-Fight Prediction: David Loiseau (Decision)

-The Fight: ROUND ONE: I will refer to Loiseau as "DL." Good kick by DL to begin things. They clinch and Villasenor takes down DL. Gets side control, and lays in knees to the ribs. Villasenor works side control and gets shoulder strikes, interesting. Villasenor works elbow strikes and then a few rights. DL out and to their feet they go. Villasenor slams him down and gets full mount, DL gives up the back and Villasenor with side control on the back on DL. Knee strikes to the side and shoulders by Villasenor. Villasenor steps in and almost a crucifix position and gets some head shots. DL gets to his feet, they stay in the clinch and Villasenor slams him down again, at will really for the third time. Villasenor in side control and shots to the gut by Villasenor. More knee shots by Villasenor, goes to top and drops more knees. Villasenor gets his back again and DL gets to his feet and gets a slam on Villasenor. Villasenor SNAGS an arm bar by DL makes a tremendous escape. To their feet, and round one ends.

LARRY'S SCORE CARD: Villasenor dominated the round. If it wasn't for the slam and nice escape by DL, I would have gone 10-8 it was so lop-sided. Villasenor takes the round 10-9.

ROUND TWO: Leg kicks by DL to start the round. Good combo and Villasenor clinches. DL tries a slam by Villasenor reverses and slams him down. Villasenor has mount, elbow by Villasenor as DL tries not to allow side control. Villasenor with some rib shots and DL delivers a stiff elbow. Herb Dean stands them up. Big kick by DL misses, knee by Villasenor. DL is tired right now and misses a few shots. DL goes for aside kick, countered and Villasenor takes him down again. Side control by Villasenor, they scramble and Villasenor has his back. Knees to the ribs by Villasenor. Lefts to the head by Villasenor, and back to their feet. Villasenor takes him down yet again. Elbows by Villasenor to the head. Villasenor keeps getting some strikes, DL to his knees and almost to a fetal position as the round ends. DL is mentally defeated.

DL's corner gives him hell between the round.

LARRY'S SCORE CARD: Villasenor dominated again, easily. 10-9, overall 20-18 Villasenor.

ROUND THREE: Spin kick by DL misses. High kick by Villasenor slightly connects. Both connect with rights. BIG left by DL. Villasenor fires back and connects. Another good left by DL. Combo by Villasenor and some body shots. They clinch, knees by Villasenor, like 5 or 6 go unanswered. Herb Dean breaks them up. BIG right connects by Villasenor and DL is down. He pounces on him and has the back on DL. They get toothier feet, good lefts by Villasenor. Jumping kick by DL connects, by Villasenor blocked most of it. Another body shot by Villasenor. Another leaping kick by DL, but Villasenor blocks a good bit of it, but it connected again. Villasenor misses a high kick. Villasenor gets caught with a combo, but the round ends.

LARRY'S SCORE CARD: DL finally decided he wanted to fight, but it was too little and too late. Villasenor still takes the round in my opinion 10-9 and overall 30-27.

OFFICIAL DECISION: Unanimous Decision – Joey Villasenor: 30-27 across the cards.

***Personal Enjoyment Index: (1-10) 6.5. Villasenor dominated and it was a sight to see. Totally surprising to me, good fight.

-Glazer is with Villasenor. He says he earned his spot with his win. He took his opponent out of his game, and that is the name of the game to him. He feels he made him a desperate fighter. He says he saw something on film, and even though he is not good in the clinch, he felt the sweep into the takedown would work.

-We get a video on Frank Shamrock. He claims the Shamrock family is the true first family of "MMA." He beat everyone and is the real deal. He'll fight all the Gracie's.

-Glazer is with Frank. He says Renzo is the best, and that is why he picked him. They discuss his conditioning. He has taken it to a different level through study. He is efficient in his motions and he doesn't waste energy. He is ready for Phil Baroni and would love to face more Gracie's.

-We get a video package for Silva vs. Correira.

  • SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT BOUT - Antonio Silva (7-1) vs. Wesley Correira (18-11):

-Larry's Pre-Fight Prediction: Antonio Silva (Rd 1 TKO)

-The Fight: ROUND ONE: They come out punching and both connect well early. Good leg kick by Silva. They both flurry with punches and back off. Nice leg kick by Silva. Silva shoots in and takes down Correira. Silva rains down with some hammer like rights. More wild rights and then lefts as well. He gets Correira's back and tries a guillotine, knees follow. They break and a nice uppercut by Silva. Correira with jabbing lefts, goes in and a good combo by Silva. Silva shoots in again, but Correira was against the cage. Clinch now, knees by Silva. The ref breaks them. Leaping knee by Silva and Correira is down! Silva follows with a lot of shots, Correira is down and the ref stops the fight. The high knee did Correira in.

OFFICIAL DECISION: Antonio Silva @ 3:49 of Round One via ref stoppage (Strikes, TKO)

***Personal Enjoyment Index: (1-10) 6.0. Not that is was bad, but not up to the standard of the previous fights. Silva looked like a beast as he dominated and I called a fight right! I also love a good 1st round whooping.

-Glazer is with Silva. They have to go through the translator. He is happy he won and managed his game plan. He says that even though he is a huge guy, he is fast and proved it tonight.

-We get a replay of the previous action from the night.

-It is 11:50pm, technically 10-minutes left on the show and Goldberg and Mauro discussing the main event.

  • MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUT - Frank Shamrock (21-7-1) vs. Renzo Gracie (12-6-1):

-Larry's Pre-Fight Prediction: Renzo Gracie (RD 2 Submission)

-The Fight: Gracie is coming off strong wins over Carlos Newton and Pat Miletich in the last year, which is why I think he'll make the upset here. Of course, I am wrong a lot.

ROUND ONE: Here we go with the main event. Shamrock with a combo and leg kick to start. Another combo by Shamrock lands. A leg kick and they clinch. Shamrock with shots and a knee by Gracie. Take down by Gracie. Shamrock with rights from the bottom. Side control by Gracie, Shamrock kicks off the cage and Gracie still with side control. Shamrock with knees from the bottom, Shamrock doing a lot of work from the bottom. They get stood up. Leg kicks by Shamrock. Gracie shoot sin and eats a right and a knee. Leg kicks by Shamrock again. Gracie shoots in, take down and top control. Side control by Gracie, Shamrock with hard knees from the bottom again. Gracie with top control, good work as Shamrock keeps landing shots and fighting from the bottom as round one ends.

LARRY'S SCORE CARD: Gracie seemingly had control, but Shamrock was constantly striking with knees and rights from the bottom. It was a rare instance of the bottom position having a lot of offense, but I will go Gracie 10-9.

ROUND TWO: Leg kick by Shamrock to start the round. Gracie shoots in, but Shamrock shoves him away. Gracie gets the take down now, Shamrock is seated though and Gracie gets side control. More knees by Shamrock. Shamrock tries to work off the cage and gets a knee to the head. Dean breaks them up as Gracie is down. Not sure what happened there. Gracie is hurt and dazed. Herb Dean takes a point from Shamrock as the trainer checks on Gracie. He has 5-minutes to recover. Apparently it was a knee to the back of the neck that caused it, which is illegal. Shamrock talks shit to the announcers. Gracie looks out of it as he talks to the trainer. He has to hold onto the cage to stand. Shamrock dances and plays to the crowd. EMS is now checking on Gracie and they are putting a neck brace on him, I guess this is over now. Goldberg speculates that it is a concussion. Gracie is being helped from the cage and to the back to be further looked at.

Herb Dean, the announcer and the Commissioner discuss what the call is. Looks like a DQ on Shamrock.

OFFICIAL DECISION: 2:00 of Round Two. Intentional Foul, Renzo Gracie Wins.

    ***Personal Enjoyment Index: (1-10) N/A.

-Glazer is with Shamrock. He says he came to fight, and that is what he was doing. He know she hit him in the head, but he thought Renzo would move. He does what he does to win, and he is sorry to hurt him. He says he was just fighting. He says he barely hit the guy and Renzo took the foul and the win. Herb Dean is here and says early on there was a blow to the head, he warned Shamrock. He won't say it was malicious, but you lose some credibility when it happens again. Renzo's manager is there. He says there are rules, and this isn't a bar fight. There is no kneeing the head and when that happens, the rules say DQ. Shamrock says he would rematch, because he wasn't even sweating. He's sorry, he'll take the loss, but will keep doing what he does. Renzo is on his way to the hospital and has a concussion. His manager feels Renzo won the first round. Shamrock says he should go to a rules meeting. He followed his strategy but he apparently broke the new rules. He says it sucks and he disappointed the fans, but the controversy and rivalry goes on. If they want to quit like that, oh well. Shamrock thinks he pussed out.

-Mauro and Goldberg say it is a disappointing end to the a great night. Goldberg says Herb did his job and the rules are the rules. They look at the replay again continue to discuss the situation. Goldberg thinks Dean should have jumped in a bit earlier and it is unfortunate.

-Glazer is with the Gracie camp. He does have a concussion and he is going to the hospital as we speak.

    -They run down the results.

-We see Renzo being taken to the hospital.

    My Overall:

-WORST FIGHT: Nothing was bad, so I won't give this one out. Shamrock was a dick though.

-BEST FIGHT: Unanimous Decision: Gina Carano defeated Julie Kedzie - 29-28, 29-28, 30-27

    -OVERALL SCORE: 7.5

I'll be back with more thoughts on the show this week, as well as other news from the world of MMA. See you then!
