The Ultimate Fighter 6: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra
Episode 8
Previously: Team Serra leads Team Hughes 6-1. Matt Hughes is PISSED! Tommy will fight Tom….TONIGHT!
Opening Video
In the last fight, George knocked out Jared in the first round. Dorian thinks Jared was scared and George just picked him apart until he finally caught him and knocked him out. Mac thinks George is the best fighter on Team Serra.
"I wonder if there's a coaching book for dummies. Do they have that on the market? I'm gonna get that for Hughes. When's his birthday?" AWESOME! Matt Serra quote.
Dana says that Tommy is from the country while Jon has trained with the Lions Den.
In practice, Matt Hughes doesn't think Tommy is giving it his all. "YOU'RE JUST DOING MOVES!" I'd love to see Matt Hughes watch an episode of TNA Impact because I bet he would yell "THEY'RE JUST DOING MOVES!" the whole time. Hughes yells at Tommy to try to get him to show some emotion.
Serra likes the physical build of Jon but doesn't think he's all there mentally. Jon has a belt with bullets on it and thinks it would pass through security. This guy is so weird, Matt Serra is at a loss for words.
During practice, Jon is rolling with George and Serra is coaching. Jon thinks Serra is coaching George more than Jon. Serra says if he's got a question, he should ask. Jon thinks Serra plays favorites.
Tommy says he was a country boy just like Matt Hughes and Matt Hughes says that Tommy reminds him of himself when he was younger. Tommy likes to use his wrestling and strength, just like Hughes.
Jared says that Tommy isn't technical, he just holds people down and goes from there. LAY AND PRAY!
At the house, Jared makes fun of Tommy, calling him a robot and then mimicking a robot doing MMA.
At training, Serra trains to explain some things to Jon who stands there with a dumb look on his face. "You don't have ADD do you?" asks Serra.
During sparring, Jon gets schooled. He gets taken down and tapped out almost at will by George. "The fight is going to be easy compared to this," says Serra. I don't even think Serra believed that one.
Tommy says he likes to take guys down and then work ground and pound. Hughes calls Tommy raw and says he reminds him of a champion. So he's Matt Hughes and Matt Serra combined. Matt wants to make sure Tommy follows the gameplan. "How important is it for Matt Hughes to win this fight? It's very important to me," says Hughes. Isn't Tommy fighting?
Matt Serra does an AWESOME! Matt Hughes impersonation. Must be seen to do it full justice. He basically imitates how Hughes acted in his second fight with Georges St. Pierre.
All of a sudden, Jon is actually good and Serra says, "He's turned a corner." IN ONE DAY?!?! I think The Ultimate Fighter took a page out of Impact.
Tommy weighs in at 171, Jon weighs in at 169.5. Everyone on Team Hughes thinks Tommy is going to win and everyone on Team Serra thinks Jon is going to win. You expected different?
Jon says that he fights to survive as he doesn't have a dad or mom. Jon tells the story of his dad dying due to a heart attack when he was 13. I feel really bad for him right now.
The morning before the fight, Jon is nervous. Jon thinks that he has zero friends and that if he losses, no one will be there for him.
Tommy comes from a small town, if you didn't know. Jon continues to say, "I got no one, Tommy has a whole town behind him. I've got not mom or dad." Ok, now he's just looking for sympathy.
Tommy Speer (Team Hughes) vs. Jon Koppenhaver (Team Serra)
Round 1: Jon catches Tommy with a quick punch that cuts him badly and then follows up with a takedown. Jon gets his back and tries to lock in a rear naked choke. Tommy is a bloody mess as Jon continues to try and lock in the choke. Tommy fights off the choke and then turns into Jon's guard. Tommy lands good elbows and punches from the guard. Tommy mounts Jon and then comes down with short punches. He then drops elbows and Jon just covers up. Tommy continues to drop punches and elbows with no response from Jon except him covering up. The round finally ends. Tommy was in trouble early but he dominated the 2nd half of that round more than Jon won the 1st half. 10-9 Tommy.
Round 2: Jon goes for a leg kick but Tommy catches it and takes him down. Tommy is in the guard of Jon. They trade punches on the ground until Tommy passes to side control. Tommy mounts Jon but is quickly moved back to side control. Tommy does very little with this position. Jon also gets out but Tommy keeps him down and gets half guard. Tommy passes to mount as he goes for a kimura. From the mount, Tommy drops punches and elbows. The round ends. Another 10-9 round for Tommy.
After the fight, Jon can't even sit on the stool.
Serra thought the fight was going to be stopped when Jon had the choke. Jon thinks he blew his wad trying to get the choke. Jon says he had nothing left after the first.
Winner – Tommy Speer by Unanimous Decision
After the fight, Serra puts over Jon and his heart. Serra is still proud that he beat Hughes 6-2 and that's got to hurt the pride of Hughes.
Next Week: Serra has complete control of the quarterfinal fights and he wants to match up Mac vs. Tommy so Hughes loses another fighter. Mac tries to be nice to Blake. Serra has to make a tough decision.
Show Thoughts: Matt Hughes is still a prick and I can't wait to read his blog with his thoughts on Serra's impersonation. Jon was getting annoying with his "no one loves me" attitude. I feel bad that he lost his parents at a young age but shut up about it. I thought the fight was going to be stopped in the first as Jon was doing nothing but covering up while Tommy dropped elbows and punches. Decent episode.
