The Ultimate Fighter 6: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra
Episode 10
Previously: Matt Serra had to give up two of his fighters to Matt Hughes. Richie and Matt had to move to Team Hughes.
Opening Video
We get highlights of Mac vs. John. Mac cut him early with a hook and then dominated from there with elbows before locking in the choke. "We when the first quarterfinal. Good for me. It's about time," says Hughes.
John returns to the house after losing and his face is messed up from the fight. He sits in his bed with his head down, feeling like shit after losing. "I'm getting fat and I'm getting drunk," says John. It worked for Chuck Liddell for a number of years so you never know.
John gets wasted and proceeds to tear up the house. John and Jon throw the fooseball table in the table. John then decides that the fooseball table is lonely so he throws chairs, practice dummies, tables, and a bunch of other shit in the pool. He caps off his night by ramming his head into a tree. I feel bad for whoever the hell has to clean up the house after each season because there's always someone who tears that shit up.
Serra was looking forward to every fight until his team had to fight each other. Richie and Matt decided that they don't want to train with Matt Hughes. Dana isn't going to force them to train with Hughes, but Hughes is still going to corner them. Serra says he's not going to corner George or Troy because he doesn't want to coach against Matt or Richie. Troy feels he's going to be alone going into the fight. Didn't they just have teammates corner them when two teammates fought each other in previous seasons? Why the hell isn't that happening here?
Matt's strategy against Troy is to take the fight to the ground. Troy thinks Serra is favoring Matt and George and he's getting pissed. Troy sees Serra whispering things to Matt and George and becomes even more pissed.
Mac is upset that Richie didn't train with Team Hughes because he wanted to rough him up. Mac does his best Richie impersonation on the way to the training center. Hughes says it's the loss of Matt and Richie to not train with him. Hughes thinks Serra is unprofessional for not corning his guys.
Dana White, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, and both teams go to Red Rock Bowling Lanes for the coach's challenge. Dana says Hughes and Serra are going to bowl one round and the winner gets a prize. Dana pulls out a box with money in it and Serra asks, "What is that?" to which Dana replies back with, "A box of money." Classic. The winner gets $10,000 and each member of the winning team gets $1,500.
"I don't know if either one of them can bowl or not. Hughes lives in Illinois, what the fuck else can you do in Illinois?" asks Dana. My guess is read a bible. Hughes asks his team how to bowl.
They warm up and Hughes sees Serra rolling a bunch of gutter balls. Hughes talks to Dana about doubling the fighter's money to $3,000. Dana doesn't like the idea but says that if Hughes can throw a strike, he'll double the money. May God be with him.
He sets……he approaches…..he rolls……contact.....STRIKE! THE FIGHTERS GO CRAZY! Dana thinks he got worked and that Hughes is on the Illinois State Bowling Team.
Serra rolls a gutter bowl to start. Dana makes fun of how Serra rolls the ball, stating how slow it goes. Serra hits 9 pins on his second roll though. Dana says that Hughes rolls the ball 100MPH but only hits 3 pins. "This is going to be a good game….both of them suck."
Matt gives Serra a bunch of advice about bowling and it seems to be working. It comes down to the last frame and Serra has a small lead. A strike or a spare and he wins the game. He knocks down 9 pins on his first roll. Serra picks up the spare and gets the win.
After losing, Hughes leaves right away. So if Serra beats him at UFC 79, will he pull a Forrest Griffin from UFC 66? That would be pretty awesome to see.
The night before the fight, George and Matt go to the training center to meet with Serra while Troy and Richie stay home. Serra gets word that Troy thinks that he's playing favorites. Serra says that's the furthest thing from the truth and that he's willing to help out all his guys because he's not going to force them to do anything.
Troy is still upset that Serra won't corner him against Matt. Matt's plan is to take it to the ground while Troy wants to stand and bang. Jon, Dorian, and John are going to corner Troy.
Matt Arroyo (Team Serra) vs. Troy Mandaloniz(Team Serra)
Round 1: Matt throws a high kick to start. Matt feints a punch and scores with the takedown into side control. Matt scores with knees to the body and punches before transitioning into an arm bar.
Winner: Matt Arroyo by Submission
Troy says he was frozen and too worried about the takedown to let his hands go early. Hughes says that Serra could have helped Troy escaped something like this if he had properly trained him or cornered.
Dana wants to know how Troy has zero ground game when he trains with BJ Penn and is good friends with him.
Serra was happy for Matt but upset for Troy. Serra gives Troy a little pep talk after the fight and Troy seems to forgive Serra for not cornering him.
Serra says that George is probably the top guy on the team and puts over his all-around skills. Richie knows that he is being fed to George but he's going to come out and give him a fight.
Serra says that Richie is a sleeper and he's got the potential to upset George. George says that he's got a lot of respect for Richie and he's not taking him lightly.
Richie Hightower (Team Serra) vs. George Sotiropoulos (Team Serra)
Round 1: Both guys swing and land some small shots before clinching against the cage. They break, swing, and miss. They clinch against the fence again and George lands a knee to the body before a break. Richie throws a leg kick but George catches it and takes him down and into guard. George passes to side control but Richie gets him into half guard. George lands some shots before passing back to side control. George goes for a kimura but Richie defends. George passes to the other side and locks in the kimura, forcing Richie to tap out.
Winner: George Sotiropoulos by Submission
Dana and Hughes were impressed with how Richie went out and let his hands go. Serra thought it was a good showing by both men.
Serra is happy now that both fights are over. Richie puts George over saying that he was his toughest fight. Richie says that he will be back.
End Show
Next Episode: Team Serra plays a prank that goes too far and Ben takes on Tommy.
Show Thoughts: The coach's challenge was once again very fun but the two fights were too quick to be anything special. I guess that's what happens when you match up the two best guys against the two worse. I didn't think Serra not wanting to corner his guys was a big deal but obviously Hughes will say anything to make Serra look like a bad guy.
Happy Thanksgiving. I hope everyone gained a few pounds today and that you're thankful for something in life. Take care.
