The Ultimate Fighter 6: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra
Episode 12
Previously: Mac, Matt, George, and Tommy all advanced to the semi-finals. Mac will take on Matt and George will take on Tommy.
Opening Video
We get highlights on Mac sparring with Matt Hughes. Hughes believes that the toughest guys are in the semi-finals. Mac thinks Matt is third best fighter in the house behind himself and George. Nothing is going to stop Mac from winning the whole thing.
Highlights of Matt training are now shown. Matt thinks he's the underdog and that all the pressure is on Mac. Matt was sparring with Richie when Richie landed a takedown and all of his weight went onto Matt's ribs. Matt trains to battle through it but his ribs are killing him. He ends up going to the doctor to check out his ribs.
The doctor tells him there's a small crack and deep bruising. Matt debates on whether or not to fight. How odd is it that Matt gets messed up ribs while doing simple takedown defense on Team Serra and months later, Serra gets a messed up back while training with Matt for his fight against Hughes?
The next day, Serra and Matt discuss the injury. Matt tells him it hurts and that he can't do much in the octagon with the current condition. Matt tells him he can't fight. Matt sits down with Dana White to talk about the injury. Dana questions just how hurt he is and how much he's giving up. Matt tells Dana he can't fight and now Dana and Serra have to find a replacement.
Dana and Serra sit down to see who will replace Matt. Serra wishes Ben was healthy to fight Mac but his nose is too fucked up. Serra brings in his guys to talk about fighting Mac. Jon doesn't seem confident and Troy is worried about cutting weight. Richie says he wants the fight but doesn't want to cut weight. As he leaves, Dana can tell Richie is scared to fight Mac. John walks in and says he wants the fight right away. That's all Dana needed to hear.
Back at the house, John lets Mac know that he's replacing Matt. Mac respects that John stepped up for his team when no one else would but doesn't like the fact that he already beat John and now has to face him again.
At the house and in the gym, John works on his stand up. Serra says that if John stays calm, he'll give Mac hell.
Mac is still upset that he has to fight John again while John is ready to avenge his loss.
Semi-Finals: Mac Danzig (Team Hughes) vs. John Kolosci (Team Serra)
Round One: Inside leg kick by John to start. John is throwing kicks but only the leg kicks are landing. Leg kick by Mac. They trade leg kicks. More leg kicks by John. They clinch against the fence and exchange knees to the body. Mac scores with takedown from the clinch. John tries to lock a kimura from the bottom but Mac is having known of it. Mac gets John's back from the side and begins lading punches to the head. Mac locks in a rear naked choke from the side and John taps out.
Winner – Mac Danzig by Submission
Serra thought John looked calmer in this fight compared to the last. Hughes thought John was wasting all his energy with the kicks. Serra calls this fight a morale victory for John. Dana appreciates that John stepped up when no one else would.
Mac begins to tear up after his win as he's worked longer than anyone to make it to the UFC.
At Team Hughes training, Tommy works on his stand up. Hughes says that Tommy has a lot of power in his right hand and Team Serra doesn't know about it. Blake is worried that if it goes to the ground, Tommy is screwed.
Serra thinks George is very confident going into the fight. George works on his stand up and says that he has more skills than Tommy and is in better condition.
At the weigh ins, Tommy checks in at 171 and George comes in at 170. Dana picks George to win. Hughes thinks Tommy will take George down and hold him there while Serra thinks George will out class Tommy.
Semi-Finals: Tommy Speer (Team Hughes) vs. George Sotiropoulos (Team Serra)
Round One: Both guys throw back up jabs to start. Tommy gets inside and tries to clinch but George fights free. Tommy tries again and George once again avoids the clinch. Tommy moves forward and pokes George in the eye. George uses his time to rest and talk to Serra. He comes back out ready to go. Tommy lands a nice right. Tommy tries to clinch again and George escapes. Good combo by George. Tommy catches George with another right and George goes down. Tommy pounces and punches George until he goes out and the ref stops it.
Winner – Tommy Speer by KO
Everyone from Team Hughes rushes the cage and celebrates.
Dana thinks George was nervous. Serra thinks George should have used more time to rest after the thumb. Hughes thinks the eye poke has nothing to do with the ending as Tommy would have won anyway.
Hughes is no longer on suicide watch as he got both guys in the finals despite losing most of the early fights.
The doctors go to check on George and he's kicking around like he's still fighting. George asks what happened when he finally wakes up. Serra thinks George has a very bright future.
TOMMY GIVES AN ODE TO BUFF BAGWELL AFTER THE FIGHT! He's my new favorite fighter. Tommy and Mac square off in the center of the octagon as Dana announces the finals.
Dana puts over everyone and really puts over the job Serra did as a coach.
The show ends with a promo for The Ultimate Finale 6 featuring Tommy Speer against Mac Danzig in the final. In the main event, Roger Huerta will take on Clay Guida.
They also tell us that Serra can't fight Hughes at UFC 79 and that Georges St. Pierre will take his place. We get a quick history of GSP/Hughes and it's announced that the winner will fight Serra in 2008.
End Show
Show Thoughts: First, I apologize for this being late as finals are coming up, a basketball game got in the way, and complications downloading pissed me off. Sorry about that.
Two very good fights on this episode. I would have liked to seen Mac vs. Matt but what are you gonna do? Much respect to John for stepping up although I think we all would have loved to see Mac vs. Richie after their encounters during the season. As with last season, the two favorites made it to the semi-finals but only one made it to the finals. Overall this was a hit and miss season and I'll discuss everything, including a wrap up of the finale, next week. Thanks for joining me every week and enjoy The Ultimate Finale 6 this Saturday.
