411’s WEC 32 Report 2.13.08

    WEC 32~!:


    -LIVE from the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho New Mexico!

    -Todd Harris and Frank Mir are the announcers, and Harris puts over Mir's win over Brock.

    -We get the codes of the cage.

    -First up is a video package for Manny Tapia vs. Antonio Banuelos.

  • BANTAMWEIGHT BOUT - Manny Tapia (9-0-1dr) vs. Antonio Banuelos (15-4):

    -The Fight: ROUND ONE: The official is Steve "THE STASH" Mazzagatti. Here we go. They circle and both throw a bit wild to begin. Banuelos slips but is back up, a combo by Banuelos and a right lands for Tapia. Both land some shots off of combo tries, Tapia gets a nice uppercut and they circle some more. Banuelos slips and Tapia lands good shots. They both connect with good rights and clinch. To the cage they go, knees by Banuelos and then by Tapia. Banuelos is down and Tapia lands good shots, but Banuelos gets a good up kick. Tapia gets his back, lands good shots to the ribs. Knees by Tapia, Banuelos rolls and then into North South position. Tapia stands and allows Banuelos up. A high kick by Banuelos is blocked, a straight right by Tapia lands but Banuelos gets a takedown. He landed good uppercuts, Tapia up and then Tapia escapes a kimura. Tapia locks him up from behind, Banuelos lands a few good elbows strikes and they are against the cage. Tapia unloads with a good combo but Banuelos answers. Tapia takes Banuelos down, but Banuelos sweeps and gets side control. Banuelos lands solid shots to end the round.

    LARRY'S SCORECARD: A really well contested round, Banuelos landed good shots and had good counters and I'll give him the round 10-9.

    ROUND TWO: Round two begins and they circle a bit, jabs by Banuelos. They trade shots and Tapia rocks Banuelos and he is down! Tapia has the back/side and lands some rights. Banuelos is giving up the back easily, but Tapia hasn't done anything. They stand, spinning elbow by Banuelos but Banuelos is bleeding slightly from the nose. Tapia with a good combo, Banuelos answers back and then they trade knees. They clinch and go against the cage, elbows by Banuelos and they stay clinched. Lefts by Banuelos and then a few knees connect. Banuelos tries a single leg and gets Tapia down. Banuelos into half guard, he gets short elbows and then shots to the ribs. North south now, Banuelos almost had a guillotine by Tapia escapes. Leg kick by Tapia, and a left by Banuelos. They dance a bit and trade shots that don't connect that much. A good left by Tapia, jab and then misses an uppercut allowing Banuelos to get a rebound shot. A solid jab by Tapia and the round ends.

    LARRY'S SCORECARD: Another good round. Tapia has had chances when he has had the back but isn't doing anything. Banuelos is landing more and controlling overall and he'll take round two 10-9 and is up on my card 20-18.

    ROUND THREE: Final round begins and they circle as they have the first two rounds. They trade shots, a string right by Tapia by Banuelos take shim down and has his back. He has one hook in, lands some soft lefts and then almost had the choke. Tapia works to stand, knees by Banuelos and he keeps the back but loses the hook. Tapia sits out, Banuelos continues to hold on but Tapia escapes. To the feet they go and Tapia stalks him. A sidekick connects by Banuelos, he shoots and almost gets the takedown. They clinch and go to the cage. They break and Tapia backs him up, but doesn't do much. Banuelos shoots, but Tapia brushes him off. They trade some light shots, and then both hit a left. They trade again, no real control right now. They both trade some combos, but not much damage. Banuelos throws a high kick but it is blocked. They clinch and break, Banuelos misses a spin kick as the round ends.

    LARRY'S SCORECARD: Banuelos got the big takedown in the round and continued to play great defense while racking up good shots when he did have the control. I think he takes the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27. Mir disagrees I believe.

    -The Result: SPLIT DRAW (30-27 Tapia, 29-28 Banuelos, 28-28 DRAW)

    Frank Mir is with Tapia. He feels he took Banuelos way too lightly and he paid for it. He puts over his camp. He says Banuelos is a brawler, they put on a shot and Banuelos has the heart of a lion.

    Mir is with Banuelos now. Banuelos says he is sorry he didn't win and leaves.

    WAIT…SCORING ISSUE! The Athletic Commission says the last score was actually 29-28 for Tapia, so he wins by Majority Decision.




    -Urijah Faber joins the commentary team.

    -We get a video package for Chase Beebe vs. Miguel Torres.

  • WEC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE BOUT - Chase Beebe © (13-1) vs. Miguel Torres (19-1):

    -The Fight: ROUND ONE: The official is Steve "THE STASH" Mazzagatti. Here we go. Leg kick by Torres connects, and another. Straight left by Beebe and then jabs. A leg kick by Beebe and another. They trade hard jabs and then a leg kick by Torres. Beebe answers with one of his own and then Torres gets huge knee to the face they go to the mat and Torres almost had an arm bar, but Beebe escapes and eats an up kick by Torres. A hard sidekick by Torres, Beebe shoots and gets a takedown and is into the guard. Torres controls the head and wrists, Beebe gets a good shot but Torres looks for the arm again but Beebe stands and then drops back in. Good elbows by Beebe, and Torres gets a few from the bottom. Torres goes for a shoulder lock but a great counter by Beebe, an arm bar try and Beebe escapes. Torres looks for a darce/anaconda choke, Beebe fights for his life and keeps rolling but HAS to tap before Torres ripped his head off to take it home! An amazing ending to the fight. It was officially a guillotine that ended it.

    -The Result: NEW CHAMPION Miguel Torres via RD1 (3:59) submission

    Frank Mir is with Miguel Torres. Torres says he knew he was a good wrestler, but he knew he had to use his Ju Jitzu.




    -They hype the match card, and the rematch between Filho and Sonnen. Also Doug Marshall vs. Brian Stann.

    -Marshall joins them ringside. He says he has seen some good shit tonight, including that last fight. As for his fight in March, he knows he will have a war on his hands and wants to keep it standing. In the next weeks he will go into his camp and stick to what he has been doing. Maybe he'll submit Stann, you never know.


    -We get a video package for Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Leonard Garcia.

  • FEATHERWEIGHT BOUT - Hiroyuki Takaya (9-4-1) vs. Leonard Garcia (14-3):

    -The Fight: ROUND ONE: The official is Tony Rosales. They rush out and trade leg kicks. Takaya with a leg kick, and then Garcia answers. A good combo by Garcia, and another leg kick. Garcia misses a huge right as Takaya gets a leg kick. They trade and both connect, Garcia then drops Takaya with a straight right after a good roundhouse kick and begins to rain down when Rosales stops the bout.

    -The Result: Leonard Garcia via RD1 (1:31) TKO

    Frank Mir is with Garcia. Garcia says he is from the area and 155 was too heavy, but 145 is just right. Takaya said he would knock him out, and he proved him wrong.




    -We get a little video package on New Mexico and the rise in MMA in the state.

    -We get a video package for Rob McCullough vs. Jamie Varner.

  • WEC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE BOUT - Rob McCullough © (15-3) vs. Jamie Varner (13-2-1nc):

    -The Fight: ROUND ONE: The official is Steve "THE STASH" Mazzagatti. They circle and Varner throws first and lands. He gets a solid right and shoots in and takes down McCullough. Against the cage, McCullough to his feet and then a great sprawl by McCullough. They clinch against the cage, McCullough stops another takedown but Varner gets the back. he is against the cage, McCullough out and they remain clinched. Varner gets him down and has side. McCullough sits against the cage, walks up and to his feet. McCullough with a good sprawl here, stops the takedown but Varner gets him down against the cage. McCullough walks his way back to his feet, and a great uppercut by Varner. A big knee by McCullough and he avoids a takedown. Rights by Varner, he shoots but another great sprawl by McCullough. They both miss shots and Varner gets a solid right. Varner shots, sprawl and a knee by McCullough. They stand and trade both landing good shots. A solid kick by McCullough to the liver and Varner clinches. Knees by McCullough, they separate and dance as the round ends.

    LARRY'S SCORECARD: A fun round. McCullough was on the defense the majority of the round, and while Varner did get takedowns McCullough was able to get right back to his feet, stopping the advantage. McCullough landed better shots I feel and he'll take the round 10-9.

    ROUND TWO: Round two begins and they throw a bit wildly but both get some shots to land. They trade again, glancing shots and then trade jabs. A straight right by Varner, and then a good overhand left. The crowd is restless here and Varner gets a combo to land. McCullough gets a great kick to the ribs and they dance. Overhand right by Varner, jabs and a right by Varner. They trade jabs and a good right by Varner. Not much action here as they are dancing around, McCullough finally throws a kick and lands it. He should do that more. They trade jabs again, Varner pot shots a bit but keeps landing and avoiding. McCullough misses a kick, lands another but then eats a straight right as the round ends.

    LARRY'S SCORECARD: All standing this round and Varner had the advantage through out. McCullough refuses to go to the kicks, even though they land about every time. 10-9 for Varner and we're even through two 19-19.

    ROUND THREE: Round three begins and Varner gets a combo to land. McCullough starts landing heavy hands and has Varner down. He knocked his mouthpiece out and he calls time to get it back in, since he was being owned. Back to action and Varner lands a combo. Body shot by Varner as we slow again and Varner starts with the pot shots. He lands a great combo ending in a body shot and then a left to the head. Big knee by Varner, leg kick by McCullough. A body kick by McCullough and then Varner drops him with a straight shot! He rains down and McCullough back up and they trade big time, McCullough is DROPPED again with another right and is busted open BIG time under the eye! Mazzagatti stops it! Not enough GAMMA-O for Razor Rob apparently.

    -The Result: NEW CHAMPION Jamie Varner via RD3 (2:54) TKO

    Frank Mir is with Jamie Varner. Varner says Rob is a "tough mother fucker" and it gets through. Tremendous. He put his wrestling on the backburner and worked striking and it paid off.




    -We get a video package for Carlos Condit vs. Carlo Prater. Prater beat Condit once upon a time.

  • WEC WELTERWEIGHT TITLE BOUT - Carlos Condit © (21-4) vs. Carlo Prater (21-5-1):

    -The Fight: ROUND ONE: The official is Steve "THE STASH" Mazzagatti. Leg kicks by Condit to begin. Straight leg kick and another inside leg kick. They clinch, a knee by Condit and then a judo toss by Prater. Prater has side guard, into full guard and Condit with shots from the bottom. Some lefts and elbows from the bottom for Condit, kicks off of the cage and is working for a triangle, but Prater is able to stay out of that. Condit is still landing from the bottom, elbows and lefts connecting. Prater looks for side control, Condit works a guillotine has it tight but Prater escapes with s good sit up. Still in Condit's guard and isn't doing half as much work from the top that Condit is from the bottom. Condit almost has a triangle, but Prater has a good counter. Condit works the guillotine again and Prater taps.

    -The Result: Carlos Condit via RD1 (3:48) submission

    Frank Mir is with Carlos Condit. Condit says Prater is a badass and he caught him. He is overwhelmed right now. Condit says he is comfortable on his back and he isn't complaining at all.




    -Back from the commercial with Todd Harris and Frank Mir running down the events of the night.

    -They hype the March 26th show again.

    you have a very bad style of judging on a lot of the fights including your ideas behind why Razor Rob won round one, and giving all 3 rounds to Banuelos

    There I was watching WEC, and as luck would have it, I fell asleep, missed teh finish of the McCollough-Varner fight, and the entire COndit fight. Thanks for the recap Larry.
