Strikeforce – Destruction

-LIVE from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California!

-Bobby Southworth is interviewed. He is confident, and while Bablu is experienced, he plans to prove himself tonight.

-We get a video package for Nik Theotikos (5-1) vs. Luke Rockhold (2-1).

  • Middleweight Bout: Nik Theotikos (5-1) vs. Luke Rockhold (2-1):

    ROUND ONE: The official is Herb Dean. They touch and Theotikos gets Rockhold down, gets the guillotine and has the legs wrapped. Rockhold escapes and is in guard, Theotikos didn't have the hands locked, which allowed Rockhold to get out. Rockhold with body shots, a lot of rights to the ribs and then gets an elbow to the face. Back to the body, stands and then drops back into the guard of Theotikos. The left side of Theotikos is already red from the body shots he is taking, Rockhold pushes him to the cage and postures up. Theotikos rolls out, but Rockhold gets the back and gets one hook in and then gets the figure four body lock, the choke is in and Theotikos taps.


    THE RESULT: Luke Rockhold via RD1 (3:06) Submission




    -Ron Kruck is with Gina Carano. They discuss where she will end up, and she says the doors are opening up but she has to get through her contract status. She wants to fight. She doesn't know if American Gladiators will be back, but she appreciate all of the support she has received.

    -We get a video package for Joe Riggs (28-11) vs. Luke Stewart (6-1).

  • Welterweight Bout: Joe Riggs (28-11) vs. Luke Stewart (6-1):

    ROUND ONE: The official is BIG JOHN McCarthy! They touch and here we go. Leg kick by Stewart, in with a combo and they clinch. To the cage and gets the trip and Riggs is down. Into the guard, Stewart pushes Riggs up against the cage and Riggs holds him tight. Stewart picks him up for a slam, Riggs escapes but takes a huge knee to the gut. Body shots by Riggs, avoids a takedown but another knee by Stewart. They separate, high kick checked by Stewart. Stewart shoots, gets the takedown and had Riggs against the cage. Stewart has him against the cage, Riggs to a knee and then slides on top of Stewart, gets a guillotine but Stewart pops out and is in the half guard. He tries for mount, Riggs stops that for the moment, and Stewart to side control. Stewart looks for mount, but ends up in half guard. Some body shots by Stewart as he continues to control the round. Stewart finally gets full mount, almost had an arm bar but Riggs escapes. Stewart has the mount still, but does nothing as the round ends.

    SCORECARD:: Stewart takes the round with two takedowns and great riding time. He didn't do much as Riggs was smart and defended, but it was easily enough to take the round 10-9.

    ROUND TWO: Stewart fakes a superman shot, shoots and Riggs defends. Riggs gets the takedown, postures up and lands good body shots. In the guard now and he lands solid body shots from the guard. Stewart looks for rubber guard, Riggs avoids that and Riggs with some more body shots. Great left by Riggs, he unloads on Stewart and then drops Stewart with a right, stops for a moment and then unloads some more and it is stopped!


    THE RESULT: Joe Riggs via RD2 (2:05) KO

    Ron Kruck is with Riggs. Riggs says he broke his hand in the first exchange, but he just pushed through fir his family. He hypes his after party and thanks his crew. He also says Cain Valasquez will beat Brock Lesnar. Riggs will stay at this weight because he like sit there.




    -We get a video package for Kim Couture (0-1) vs. Lina Kvokov (0-1).

  • Women's 133 lb. Limit: Kim Couture (0-1) vs. Lina Kvokov (0-1):

    ROUND ONE: John Schorley is the official. They come out, circle and a combo by Couture. Another and she rocks Kvokov. Against the cage, uppercuts and then knees. They clinch, Couture with a lot of punches and Kvokov is turning away. More knees by Couture and they go to the cage again. They separate, more shots by Couture and Kvokov keeps turning away and it is stopped after two shots that hit Kvokov behind the head, no warning. Kvokov looked as if she didn't want to be in there as she kept turning away.

    After it is stopped Kvokov falls to the mat and holds her head.

    Kvokov is still on the mat being attended to.

    THE RESULT: Kim Couture via RD1 (1:44) TKO

    Kruck is with Kim Couture. Kim says she felt her hands were sharp and it was working for her. They show the replay and Kim says nothing. She has the charisma of a wet washcloth. She will fight for Strikeforce again if they will have her.




    -We get a video package for Duane Ludwig (17-8) vs. Yves Edwards (34-14-1).

  • Catch Weight Bout (164lbs): Duane Ludwig (17-8) vs. Yves Edwards (34-14-1):

    ROUND ONE: The official is Josh Rosenthal. They touch and Edwards shoots, to the cage and then gets the takedown. Edwards is cut already, looks like they collided on the shoot. Edwards in the guard, half guard now and then works to side control. Ludwig rolls to the side, lefts by Edwards to the face of Ludwig and then gets worked back to the half guard. Edwards back to half guard, not doing much but works back to half guard once again. Ludwig works him back to full guard, Edwards working a control game, which looks fine but he isn't doing any damage. Ludwig tries a triangle, fails and Edwards finally gets some solid punches on Ludwig. Still in the guard, Edwards back to the half guard and maintains the control. Edwards slides him to the cage, and the round ends.

    SCORECARD:: Edwards controlled the round and takes it 10-9. But while he did control things, he did little to no damage.

    ROUND TWO: Round two begins as they trade standing. Edwards misses a high kick, gets a knee and the pace is picking up. Good body kick by Ludwig, a right to the body and Edwards shoots, takedown but Ludwig back up. Ludwig gets a knee to the body, combo and another knee. Body kick by Ludwig lands, but Edwards shoots and takes it to the ground. Edwards into guard and then half guard as he tries to slow it down and recover from the body shots he took. Edwards to side control now, gets mount, the back of for a moment but Ludwig get it to the feet. He takes Edwards to the cage, and then slams Edwards down. Back to the feet they go, Edwards gets the takedown now and into the full guard of Ludwig. Edwards starts to land some rights, and Ludwig gets to his feet. Knees against the cage by Ludwig, elbow follows and they trade knees as the round ends.

    SCORECARD:: Edwards had the two takedowns, but again he did nothing with it. Ludwig landed more on the feet, good knees that did damage and then got a takedown. A close round overall but I have it 19-19 overall.

    ROUND THREE: Round three begins and a leg kick by Edwards. He shoots, knees by Ludwig and then a combo follows. Good body shot by Ludwig, and another. High kick checked by Edwards. Clinch, knees by Ludwig. Edwards shoots, fails and then Ludwig gets the takedown. Ludwig postured up, some hammer fists follow and Edwards works wrist control. Ludwig with some body shots, some lefts to the face of Edwards and then another body shot. Ludwig gets bust, Edwards to his feet and Ludwig gets a knee right away. To the cage they go, Edwards looks for the takedown but Ludwig with another knee. Edwards keeps Ludwig against the cage, they separate and Ludwig with a push kick, Edwards shoots and gets a trip and the takedown. Ludwig is right back up, and Edwards gets him back down as the fight ends.

    SCORECARD:: Ludwig got the takedown and again did more work than Edwards. He also had very good knee strikes in the final round and did more damage. I have it 29-28 for Ludwig.


    THE RESULT: Duane Ludwig via Unanimous Decision (29-28 Across the Cards)

    Ron Kruck is with Duane Ludwig. Ludwig pimps a sponsor, and thanks Edwards for taking the fight at Catch Weight. They are friends and took the fight so that they can have a good Christmas for their kids. He thanks his camp and training partners and then makes some jokes.





    -We get a video package for Bobby Southworth © (9-5-1nc) vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral (30-7).

  • Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title Bout: Bobby Southworth © (9-5-1nc) vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral (30-7):

    ROUND ONE: The official is BIG JOHN McCarthy! Here we go, they touch and Babalu in with the combo, to the cage and Southworth turns him. Knee by Babalu, but Southworth gets him down. Southworth with side control, Babalu tries to work off the cage and works Southworth back to guard. Southworth stands, and to side control he goes. Babalu turns, gets Southworth to half guard and then to north south they go and to the feet. Knees by Babalu, against the cage and more knees by Babalu. Southworth turns him, tries to work some knees but Babalu turns him and as they stay against the cage. Southworth talks with McCarthy about something, elbow by Babalu and then another knee. Southworth works Babalu back against the cage and they get separated. Babalu shoots, stuffed and to the cage they go. A knee by Southworth, then by Babalu. Southworth looks to take Babalu down, but Babalu gets a BIG elbow on Southworth, and it opens up a cut over the right eye of Southworth. We get time and he is bleeding badly. The replay shows it was a great elbow strike. Southworth is good to go and we are back to action. Southworth catches a kick, tosses Babalu down and follow up and the round ends.

    SCORECARD:: The fight is stopped due to the cut on Southworth.


    THE RESULT: NEW STRIKEFORCE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION Renato "Babalu" Sobral via RD1 (5:00) TKO {Referee Stoppage due to Severe Cut}

    Kruck is with Babalu. Babalu knew the fight would be rough, and he says Southworth was the man but he is the champion now. Babalu says they don't like the decision because it is Southworth's hometown. Babalu thanks him for accepting the challenge and thanks his people. Babalu is honored to be the champion, to be the man. He is up for a rematch anytime.




    -We get a video package for Scott Smith (13-5-1nc) vs. Terry Martin (18-5).

  • Middleweight Bout: Scott Smith (13-5-1nc) vs. Terry Martin (18-5):

    ROUND ONE: The official is Herb Dean. They circle to begin, Martin pushes the pace early as Smith goes for jabs. They trade and Smith KILLS Martin with a right hook, Martin DOWN and IT IS ALLLLL OVER!

    Smith pimps the Hulk Hogan pose down to cap it off.


    THE RESULT: Scott Smith via RD1 (0:24) KTFO

    Kruck is with Smith. Smith says he knew it wouldn't go long. He was ready to engage and then says he wanted to set up the right, and he went down. "That felt really good." Smith says the win was big, he changed a lot of things. Frank Shamrock said he was fat in his last fight, so he trained harder.




    -Cung Le was on commentary and says Smith had the right game plan and took the great victory. He then hypes the movie he filmed. Le says he will get back to training soon and we'll see what happens fight wise for him.

    -Jake Shields is in the audience with two hot chicks. It's good to be the champ.

    It would have been nice to find someone who wanted to fight Kim Couture. I don't know the story behind this one but watching her beat Kvokov made me just sad. It looked like a schoolyard beating, not an MMA match.
