411's UFC Unleashed Report 09.06.08

Drew McFedries (5-1) vs. Martin Kampmann (15-2)
UFC 68: The Uprising
Columbus, Ohio on 03.03.07

Herb Dean is the referee.

R1: McFedries lands the first strikes of the fight with a left jab followed by a flurry. Kampmann backs up and throws a pair of high kicks. He throws a few more but McFedries throws a straight right and sends Kampmann to the mat. In the guard, McFedries reigns down with big punches. Kampann uses the guard to stop the onslaught and return to his feet. McFedries' boxing game is clearly superior to Kampmann's who has trouble stopping him. Kampann finally clinches McFedries and sweeps him to the ground. Kampmann has side control. Kampmann lands elbow's and knee's and McFedries looks to be tiring. Kampmann locks in a triangle choke from side control and the ref stops the fight after McFedries' appears to be out.

Props to UFC.com

Your winner is Martin Kampmann via submission (triangle) at 4:05 of the first round.

Marcus Davis (18-4) vs. Jason Tan (5-1)
UFC 72: Victory
Belfast, Northern Island on 06.16.07

Yves Lavigne is the referee.

R1: Tan is the active fighter early on, establishing his kicks. He throws leg kicks and high kicks. After he connects with a pair of leg kicks, Marcus Davis moves in but doesn't find his shot yet. Davis lands a pair of shots that don't look like they hurt but obviously they don't call him "The Irish Hand Grenade" for nothing. Davis connects on a cross and Tan drops like a sack of bricks. Davis lands some more unanswered shots before the referee stops the fight.

Your winner is Marcus Davis via TKO at 1:15 of the first round.

Rich Franklin (22-2) vs. Jason MacDonald (19-7)
UFC 68: The Uprising
Columbus, Ohio on 03.03.07

The referee is Herb Dean.

R1: Jason lunges in for a shot, misses and eats a right in the process. MacDonald shoots in for the single leg takedown but Franklin defends it well. Franklin gets loose and unleashes a barrage of rights and knees. MacDonald shoots in again, this time for a double leg takedown. Franklin once again defends it. MacDonald lands knees and kicks to Franklin's lower body against the cage. From the clinch, they exchange knees. Back to center cage, Franklin lands a nice combo. Franklin gets a takedown and lands big strikes on MacDonald who blocks then kicks Franklin away. Back on his feet, MacDonald is rightly leery of Franklin's striking. MacDonald finally gets a takedown, with thirty seconds remaining. Franklin reverses position and lands a few strikes as the round ends. Franklin's superior striking dominated the round as MacDonald took a lot of punishment. 10-9 for Franklin.

R2: MacDonald tries for the takedown almost immediately here but Franklin makes him pay with punches. MacDonald shoots in again, then goes for Franklin's back and nearly gets it. His position is too high though and he can't get a choke as Franklin switches position to side control. Franklin moves to the mount and the ground and pound begins. MacDonald tries to block and bounce Franklin away but cannot and takes the punishment. MacDonald turns to his back but Franklin rides him and continues the onslaught. The ground and pound continues until the end of the round. I would not have an issue if you wanted to give Franklin a 10-8 round, but a 10-9 is enough for me.

The doctor's and MacDonald's corner take a look at him and call an end to the fight.

Your winner is Rich Franklin due to corner stoppage after the second round.

Anderson Silva (17-4) vs. Travis Lutter (12-3)
UFC 67: All or Nothing
Las Vegas, Nevada on 02.03.07

Note that Silva is the UFC Middleweight Champion at this time and this fight was originally scheduled to be a title defense. However, Lutter did not make weight (officially came in at 186.5 for a 185 fight) and this was changed to a non-title fight.

The referee is Herb Dean.

R1: Lutter tries to shoot in twice but can't get near Anderson. Silva throws his first offense, a high kick, about a minute and a half in. Silva throws a big knee but Lutter catches him and has Silva on his back. Silva pulls Lutter into his closed guard. They break free and return to their feet. Lutter shoots in again, Silva throws a kick but it's caught. Lutter takes Silva down again. Silva pulls guard. Silva throws upkicks then pulls guard again. Lutter switches to side control with a minute left. Lutter wants to mount but falls into Anderson's half guard. Lutter mounts with forty-five seconds left. WOW. Ground and pound begins and Anderson takes big shots to the face before he traps Lutter in a sloppy armbar and gets up. WOW! Silva calls Lutter to his feet. Lutter returns to his back with his feet in the air. Anderson looks bored as he throws a kick that misses. Anderson put's his hands on his waist as he looks at Lutter on the mat. Slow start to the fight and Anderson did not do much besides pulling guard. Lutter's ground and pound was the part that influenced me the most. 10-9 for Lutter.

R2: Anderson starts with a leg kick as Lutter immediately shoots in and secures the double leg takedown. Silva pulls guard just as he did in the first round. Silva does a tremendous job of controlling Lutter's wrists, thus preventing any punches. Silva throws a few upkicks, then goes for a triangle choke The choke is locked in. Silva begins throwing punches and elbows to Lutter's head. This goes on for over a minute and finally the referee steps in and stops the fight. Silva is awesome.

After the end of the fight, the camera goes to the crowd. We see a dapper Tito Ortiz with Jenna Jameson. The camera switches to Forrest Griffin who's dressed in a cap and a dingy Xyience t-shirt. Pictures speak wonders.

Your winner is Anderson Silva via submission (triangle) at 2:11 of the second round.

Final Thoughts: It's pretty funny. On this show, we saw great display's of the stand-up game/striking from Drew McFedries, Marcus Davis and Rich Franklin. Anderson Silva did absolutely nothing on his feet and still won in dominant fashion. Why? It's simple, you see, because Anderson Silva is the very definition of 'the best.' Put Silva, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and Barry Bonds in the same room and I'd be most amazed by Silva. Of course, the other three would probably ask, "Who the hell is this guy?!"....Silva would just laugh and smile, because he can.
