WEC 36 – Faber vs. Brown

-LIVE from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood Florida!

-We get hype for the show as they announce that Paulo Filho did NOT make weight, and then say that the fight will be three-rounds.

-Nissen Osterneck (5-0) Vs. Jake Rosholt (4-0) will kick off the show.

-We get a video package for Nissen Osterneck (5-0) Vs. Jake Rosholt.

  • Middleweight Bout - Nissen Osterneck (5-0) Vs. Jake Rosholt (4-0):

ROUND ONE: The official is Troy Waugh. And here we go as they touch, leg kick by Rosholt. Osterneck in with a combo, Rosholt tries to get him to the ground and slams him down. Side control right away by Rosholt, hammer fists to the head. Gets a warning for shots to the back of the head. Rosholt had the hooks in, Osterneck rolls out and as Rosholt tries to stack Osterneck, Osterneck looks for a triangle. To the feet they go, good shots by Osterneck follow. They trade, uppercut by Osterneck and knees follow. Great left by Osterneck, Rosholt clinches and to the cage they go. Knees by Rosholt, combo by Osterneck to break that up. To the ground we go and Rosholt gets side control, Osterneck gives up the back and Rosholt with knees to the body. He catches Osterneck in the head, we get a brief stoppage and back to action they go. Osterneck looks for the arm, Rosholt out and up kicks by Osterneck. Down kick by Rosholt, drops in and rights to a stacked Osterneck. Big right to the head, he has side control and works elbows to the body. Osterneck gives up the back but Rosholt right back to side control. He gets the mount, then the back and is delivering good shots. To the half guard, works for a head and arm choke but the round ends.

SCORECARD:: Rosholt had the takedowns and did well while it was on the ground, while Osterneck looked good standing. I think the takedowns and riding time got Rosholt round one, and he is up 10-9.

ROUND TWO: Round two begins and Osterneck works leg kicks. Rosholt shoots, to the cage, gets a single leg but Osterneck rolls into a Kimura, then locks in a nice arm bar. Rosholt passes, stands and stacks up Osterneck. Drops into the guard, half guard now and then to side control. Tries for mount, fails but gets a good right on Osterneck. Rosholt works side control again, right and left by Rosholt, Osterneck give sup the back and gets to his feet. GREAT combo by Osterneck, uppercuts and knees follow. A high kick by Osterneck lands, but he slips. Misses the spinning back fist, Rosholt takes him down and mounts him. He starts to rain down with rights, gets warned for hitting the back of the head, more rights to the face as the referee warns Osterneck to improve his position. Osterneck gives up his back, Rosholt flattens him out, rights and lefts follow and the fight is stopped.

THE RESULT: Jake Rosholt via RD2 (3:48) TKO

Jake says that the fight didn't go to plan, and Osterneck kicked his ass a bit. Osterneck came out and put it on him, and he had to survive. He says he has to keep getting better, and has things to work on for sure but he will get better.

-Jens Pulver (22-9-1) Vs. Leonard Garcia (15-3) is up next!

-They hype WEC 37 on December 3rd, with Tapia vs. Torres for the Bantamweight Title headlining the show.

-Hermes Franca, Miguel Torres, Jamie Varner and Carlos Condit are all in attendance.

-We get a video package for Jens Pulver Vs. Leonard Garcia.

  • Featherweight Bout - Jens Pulver (22-9-1) Vs. Leonard Garcia (15-3):

ROUND ONE: The official is Jorge Alonzo. They come out and circle, leg kicks by Garcia and Pulver backs him off with a hook. High kick checked by Pulver, a right by Garcia and then a left hook lands. Good combo by Garcia, a body kick rocks Pulver against the cage and Garcia starts to unload crazy on Pulver! Pulver is doing nothing but taking the shots and the fight is stopped! Damn.

THE RESULT: Leonard Garcia via RD1 (1:12) TKO

Garcia is smiling and says he is not surprised it was over so soon. The guys he train with say he is a hard striker. He respects Pulver and then says he wants a title shot. He says the actions speak, and says that he is the #1 contender.

-We get a video package for Aaron Simpson vs. David Avellan.

  • Middleweight Bout - Aaron Simpson (3-0) vs. David Avellan (2-0):

ROUND ONE: The official is Jorge Alonzo. They come out, touch, Avellan with a combo and then KILLS Avellan with a right, drops him and it is ALL OVER! He followed up only because Alonzo was slow getting in to stop it. Avellan has NO clue what just happened.

THE RESULT: Aaron Simpson via RD1 (0:18) KO

Simpson says that he has been training a year, and has now added a new dimension. He says to give it up for his opponent, and we see a replay of the KO. Simpson puts over his camp, and then says he will keep training and that the sky is the limit.

-We get a video package for Paulo Filho Vs. Chael Sonnen. Sonnen is pissed about Filho not making weight.

    -The crowd hates Filho.

  • Middleweight Bout - Paulo Filho (16-0) Vs. Chael Sonnen (22-9-1):

ROUND ONE: The official is Jorge Ortiz. They come out, no touch and Sonnen is aggressive, but not landing. Filho shoots, stuffed and lefts by Sonnen. North south position, body shots by Sonnen. Filho tries to push Sonnen to the cage, they stand and Sonnen gets a right as Filho gets to his feet. Filho slips on a combo try, leg kicks by Sonnen and drops in with a right. A body shot follows, body kicks as well and then in with a left. Another left by Sonnen, up kicks by Filho to try and keep him away and Sonnen into half guard. Rights by Sonnen, he stands and then in with another left. Sonnen drops in, almost caught in an arm bar, backs out and stands. Leg kicks by Sonnen, foot stomps by Sonnen but Filho rolls into a knee bar try, Sonnen escapes and stands. Filho stays on his back, body shot by Sonnen and a leg kick follows. Filho kicks at the knees of Sonnen, leg kicks by Sonnen and then a foot stomp. The round ends.

SCORECARD:: Filho did nothing in that round (outside the two submission attempts), and while Sonnen's strategy is a bit suspect, he easily takes the round 10-9.

ROUND TWO: Round two begins and Sonnen with leg kicks. Backspin kick by Filho misses, push kick lands and then a jab by Sonnen. Combo by Sonnen, straight left and backs out. Leg kick by Filho, he shoots, stuffed and to the cage they go. Filho pulls Sonnen down and as he gets into the guard, he gets up and makes Filho stand. Hard body kick by Sonnen and he makes Filho stand again. Filho fakes a shot, they trade jabs and Sonnen connects with a double jab. Body kick by Filho barely connects, they clinch and Filho jumps up on Sonnen and then Sonnen slams him down and backs away. Filho stands, jabs by Sonnen again and then a body shot follows. Good combo by Sonnen, a leg kick follows and then another jab. Filho shoots, sprawl by Sonnen and they go to north south. Sonnen stands, and makes Filho stand again. Filho with a head kick that lands, Sonnen backs off, and then gets a jab. The round ends.

SCORECARD:: Sonnen's round again. He is being smart now and making Filho stand and not going to the ground as he mistakenly did in round one. I have it 20-18 Sonnen.

ROUND THREE: And the final round begins. Sonnen circles Filho, light jabs by Sonnen and he keeps his distance and remains in control. Filho fakes a shot, eats a combo and then two jabs by Sonnen. Filho to the ground, Sonnen with leg kicks and then a body shot. Sonnen keeps scoring with leg kicks and body shots, not hard and he backs away again. Filho looked to shoot but stopped halfway in. Leg kick by Sonnen, Filho lazily looked for a shot but backed off. Jabs by Sonnen, he looks like Nick Diaz here as he keeps landing these light shots. Filho looks horrible here, like he doesn't even want to be here. Filho keeps walking into the shots and not doing a thing. He isn't throwing a punch and we get BULL SHIT chants now. Sonnen clinches and lands an elbow. A good jab by Sonnen, Filho misses a spin kick and then a great knee by Sonnen. Jabs by Sonnen and the fight is over.

SCORECARD:: For a 16-0, top 10-Middleweight Filho looked like shit. Hell I had him ranked #2 in our latest rankings. He did NOTHING in this round and embarrassed himself. I go 10-8 Sonnen for round three, and 30-26 overall for Sonnen.

THE RESULT: Chael Sonnen via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

-They discuss the fact that they fight should have been in September, but Hurricane Ike caused the delay.

-We get a video package for Urijah Faber Vs. Mike Brown.

  • WEC Featherweight Title Bout - Urijah Faber (21-1-0) © Vs. Mike Brown (19-4-0):

ROUND ONE: The official is Troy Waugh. Let's get ready to rock and roll because it is main event time! They come out, circle and a body kick by Faber. Faber fakes a knee, great right by Faber and then a combo lands. They clinch, separate and a head kick by Faber lands but Brown is fine. They clinch, against the cage and Brown has a leg, drops it and Brown with a big knee. Faber knocked back, slips but is back up. Browns shoots, Faber down, back up, Faber gets an elbow but Brown nails him as he came in with it, Faber down and Brown dives in and is UNLOADING with rights as he has the back of Faber, he keeps landing, Faber cannot defend and IT IS STOPPED! Holy shit.

THE RESULT: Winner and NEW WEC FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION Mike Brown via RD1 (2:23) TKO

The crowd is stunned here in Florida as we get the official announcement. Brown says he trains with a great team and he performed and thinks he can beat anyone. "That fucker hits hard." Brown says he has friends and family here, and it has been a long road and he loves a bunch of friends he just named.

Faber now says he made a small mistake, Brown took him out due to that and that is that. He is a happy person, and he will come back for that title. Faber says he is motivated and he will be back, hats off to Brown; it was a great win. He will be back for the title sometime.

Mike Brown is being helped out of the cage, holding his ribs. Mir suspects that he could have pulled or broke a rib.

-Thanks for joining 411 for WEC 36!

Did Anderson once said that Filho was p4p the best fighter in the world? What happened then?

Guess Filho figured that his UFC contract was a lock and therefore he did not have to give a toss about the fight with Sonnen. I'd love to see Dana flip him the bird and make him EARN his contract. Sign Sonnen in his place.

Sonnen will be fine as long as they don't put him against Jeremy Horn. Horn embarrasses him.

Did Filho have his training camp with Kalib Starnes? He did nothing for 15minutes. A performance like that after missing weight as a defending champ is unforgivable. I really hope the UFC doesn't sign this guy now. Big night of upsets, but probably the worst WEC show to date. Anybody know where I can catch the undercard bouts?
