Prizefighter of the Month: July 09
Posted by Matt Knowles on 08.11.2009
From Amir Khan to Eddie Chambers, the 411 staff ranks the top fighters from July!
It's time for 411mania's 3rd installment of the Prizefighter of the Month! The Summer fight calendar is now in full-swing, and there were a number of big-time bouts and accomplishments that put the boxing public on notice. Here are the rules and results for July 09:
*** Each staff member picks five prizefighters and ranks them. A point value is then assigned to each of those rankings. Here is how it breaks down:
*** The fighter with the most cumulative points becomes our Prizefighter of the Month. New point values are then assigned to each combatant in the top 5, which count towards the tally for Prizefighter of the Year. Those point values are:
1) Joseph Agbeko - He never relented and he bullied around the bully in Vic Darchinyan. It was Agbeko's coming out party and Darchinyan's image has been damaged after a one-sided beating.
2) Eddie Chambers - He was in shape finally and his performance showed that he meant business. He beat a 6'7" man and beat him soundly, proving that he can hang with the big boys.
3) Miguel Vazquez - He came in as a heavy underdog and totally out-boxed the highly touted Breidis Prescott on ESPN, showing that you can never count anyone out.
4) Amir Khan - After a brutal loss, he's amounted a few wins including his biggest one to date against Andreas Kotelnik to pick up the WBA 140-pound strap.
5) Tyrone Harris - Completely outclassed Marvin Quintero on ShoBox in a fight that was supposed to showcase Quintero's skills. Turns out nobody bothered to tell Harris who came out the aggressor with knockout on his mind.
Patrick Mullin
1) "Fast" Eddie Chambers - The man who in my opinion is the best American heavyweight today did what seems impossible: went to Germany and came home with a win...on points no less! Chambers beat undefeated Ukranian sensation Alexander Dimitrenko, forcing a standing 8 count and knocking him down to solidify his status as the mandatory challenger for Wladimir Kltischko's WBO Heavyweight title.
2) Derric Rossy It's rare when a fighter picks up two wins within a month but Rossy pulled it off. Rossy manhandled unheralded Moises Droz, but followed it up by dominating former title challenger Carl Davis Drummond over 10, one sided rounds.
3) Joseph Agbeko - A lot of us expected Vic Darchinyan's bantamweight career to kick off with a bang by annexing Agbeko's championship. Instead, Agbeko surprised most of us by showing a lot of determination and a solid game plan to play the matador and slay the raging bull.
4) Amir Khan - Khan outclasses overmatched Andres Kotelnik over 12 of the most boring rounds in history, but in credit to Khan they were boring because Kotelnik had no answer for him. Khan put on his best performance to date and deserves credit.
5) Tomasz Adamek - Adamek put on a power punching display against tough but outclassed Bobby Gunn. Despite a lack of willing opponents he's unquestionably the best cruiserweight in the world.
Ryan The Rhino
1) Eddie Chambers
2) Joseph Agbeko
3) Tomasz Adamek
4) Amir Khan
5) Miguel Acosta
Ali Shakoor
1) Amir Khan- Totally put his career back on track by easily beating Kotelnik. He is a world champ now, and has the best trainer in the sport in his corner.
2) Joseph Agbeko - He really rose to the occasion and "upset" Darchinyan in the biggest fight of his career. It was a solid, complete beat-down despite a couple of the absurd scorecards.
3) "Fast" Eddie Chambers - This shows what getting in shape will do for you; He may be the most talented American heavyweight on the scene, and will get a shot a Wladimir Klitschko in the next year or so.
4) Hozumi Hasegawa- Quietly establishing himself as one of the greatest of Japanese boxers. He defended his WBC bantamweight title a 9th time with a dominate 1rst round stoppage.
5) Derric Rossy - Two wins in one month are very impressive. He was the underdog, and took the fight on short notice, but still dominated Drummond. Rossy made himself some money for future opportunities.

1) Eddie Chambers - Went overseas to Germany and came back with a hard-fought 12-round victory over Alexander Dimitrenko, which was easily the best performance of his now-blossoming career. Can he bring back a championship to American soil? Only time will tell, but this performance has given US fans an ounce of hope.
2) Joseph Agbeko - Silenced one of the loudest-mouths in the biz as he took apart Vic Darchinyan over 12 rounds. The sky is the limit for the reigning bantamweight king after such a shockingly impressive performance.
3) Amir Khan - Claimed his 1st (and probably not his last) world title belt by out-pointing the game but over-matched Andres Kotelnik. Khan may now look to solidify the WBA strap by taking on interim champ Marcos Maidana in what could be an awesome match-up.
4) Tomasz Adamek - Reaffirmed his cruiserweight championship status by dismantling a "contender" named Bobby Gunn. Although he may now be having dreams of heavyweight glory, a rematch with former champ Steve Cunningham is towards the top of my '09 wish list.
5) Derric Rossy - in a boxing rarity, Rossy earned two victories in one month, the latter against former title challenger Carl Davis Drummond. He may not be the brightest star in a meager heavyweight division, but I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Rossy.
