411 Prizefighter of the Month - October 2009

From Arthur Abraham’s KO of Jermain Taylor and Yonnhy Perez claiming the IBF Bantamweight Title to Antonio DeMarco winning the WBC Interim Lightweight title and Yuriorkis Gamboa successfully defending his title, these men all had great months. But who took home the 411 Prizefighter of the Month award? Check out the full article for all the details!

Welcome back to 411mania's Prizefighter of the Month! This is a belated article for the month of October 2009, which provided us the Fight Freaks with some great moments and accomplishments from boxing's best!

Here are the rules for the newbies in that house:

*** Each staff member picks five prizefighters and ranks them. A point value is then assigned to each of those rankings. Here is how it breaks down:

1st Place - 5 points
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

*** The fighter with the most cumulative points becomes our Prizefighter of the Month. New point values are then assigned to each combatant in the top 5, which count towards the tally for Prizefighter of the Year. Those point values are:

1st Place – 15 points
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1

Mr. Ramon

1. Arthur Abraham - simply made the biggest splash in the Super Six Tournament and showed everyone why he is one of the favorites to win the tournament.

2. Yonnhy Perez - great performance from Yonnhy as he remained poised throughout the fight with Agbeko. He outworked him and truly earned that decision.

3. Yuriorkis Gamboa - made things look easy while making a statement to JuanMa that he's going to have a fight in 2010

4. Antonio DeMarco - probably the best I've seen him up to this point in his career. Though he likes to slug it out, he showed that he can box effectively which should extend his career.

5. Rogers Mtagwa - though he came up on the short end of the judges' scorecards, he gave Lopez the fight of his life and earned the respect of boxing fans. He's also earned himself a shot at Gamboa.



P.J. Cassidy

5. Tomasz Adamek - Granted it was nothing more than a gimmick fight but Adamek looked like he could be a legitimate threat at Heavyweight, in his dismantling of Andrew Golata. His body was nicely filled out and he appeared to still have the speed he possessed at LH and CW. I think Hopkins knew what he was doing when he lowballed him for a fight, I would not want a part of Adamek right now.

4. Odlanier Solis - His performance against Monte Barrett was absolutely outstanding. Barrett may be faded but he's still a live hand whose not yet content to lie down. Solis's performance also was impressive for the fact that he basically dropped David Haye's stock as a Heavyweight.

3. Antonio DeMarco - DeMarco is developing into an all around fighter and a legitimate contender at Lightweight. If he's brought along properly, I think we're going to see an absolutely outstanding fighter in a few years time.

2. Yonnhy Perez - During most months his performance against Agbeko would earn him the #1 slot, at least in my eyes. He turned in a fantastic performance in a fight that I see as the leader for Fight of the Year.

1. Arthur Abraham - The one knock against Abraham had always been the level of opposition he had faced. Well, after his dismantling of Jermain Taylor, I think it's safe to say King Abraham is a legitimate top 10 lb for lb fighter. He looked absolutely superb and really seemed to step his game up from some of his most recent performances. When the spotlight is on the King as it was this month and during the second Miranda fight, he always seems to shine.



Ali Shakoor

1. Arthur Abraham - Ended Jermain Taylor's career as a relevant fighter. Started the Super 6 off in explosive fashion. Tough guy with an awkard style. He's beatable for sure, but he looked really good.

2. Yonnhy Perez - Outworked a solid champion in a true Fight of the Year candidate. He has a load of offensive skills and takes a good shot. He's already 30, so I'm sure he'll be looking for mostly big-money fights from here on out. Good, good fighter.

3. Tomas Adamek - I know Golata is "shot", but Adamek really showed a lot of skills in beating the crap out of him. Adamek looked good at 214, and if he stays a heavyweight, he'll fight for a title in a year.

4. Carl Froch - It wasn't pretty, but he showed a lot of toughness and experience in beating Dirrell and totally getting inside of his head. Froch won't win the tournament, but he'll be a tough out.

5. David Tua - Welcome back David. He's getting old, but there isn't much going on in the heavyweight division. His left hook is as lethal as ever. I think he'd beat Valuev, Haye, or of course Ruiz, if he wants to contend for the WBA strap next summer. He could also test Wladimir's chin. Vitali is unbeatable right now though.



Jonathan Yaghoubi

5. Rogers Mtgawa - Very rarely do I put a losing fighter in the top fighter of the month poll but the heart and courage this guy showed nearly pulled what would have been the upset of the year. A fight that no one gave him a chance but here he was giving Lopez all he could handle and more. A few more seconds more in the 12th Round and the fight was his. Being at the fight live, i was certainly more impressed with him than Lopez

4. Carl Froch - Did enough to win the decision over Direll and for the most part looked good in doing so. There was no controversy here folks. Froch won that fight!

3. Yorkikois Gamboa - He looked sensational in his win back at the Latin Fury PPV. His blinding speed made him look scarier than ever and certianly in my eye's the favorite if he fought Juan Manuel Lopez next year

2. Yohhny Perez - Everyone loved Agbeko but Perez broke him down including a knockdown of Agebko and won the easy UD

1. Arthur Abraham - Is there any doubt? A demolishing knockout win over Taylor gives him the top spot in the super six classic and might have sent Taylor on retirement



Ryan The Rhino

1. Arthur Abraham – solidified as my pick to win it all in the Super 6.

2. Yonnhy Perez – took down one of the hottest fighters in boxing by dethroning Agbeko

3. Antonio DeMarco – Definition of a perfect fight: See DeMarco, Antonio, October 31, 2009.

4. Juan Manuel Lopez – Got more than he bargained for in his mandatory challenger Mtagwa, let's see if this makes him step it up against Luevano.

5. Joseph Agbeko -- The only way you have Yonnhy Perez putting on such a great fight is with a great opponent in former bantamweight champion Agbeko. Rematch? Yes please!
