Fight Lover's Forum 01.08.10: Offering Some Kind Words About Mayweather, Seriously
Posted by A. Shakoor on 01.08.2010
I'm so disgusted about how Mayweather has manipulated this bloodtestgate episode. I'm going to switch gears to change my hateful energy. Instead of a nasty, insulting rant, I'm offering some love. Serenity now. Also, check out a brief thought on Mosley v. Berto.
After hammering Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr in my last couple of columns, I decided to start the new year off by throwing a little bit of love Pretty Boy Floyd's way. I must refocus my rage, and cleanse myself so to speak. I'm absolutely biased regarding my clear views concerning bloodtestgate. Floyd is wrong, period. Check out my last two columns in the archives if you need to understand why.
However, despite my views about the man's character and personality, I am aware that he has a few fans who virtually worship the guy as a hero or "Stone Cold" Steve Austin type anti-hero. I also completely respect Floyd's ability in the ring.
This column will also be PG, in stark contrast to the last two. Let's start the lovefest. I'll try to be nice, really.
Outside the Ring
- Floyd has a marvelous smile. Combine that with his rare, pleasant personality, and Floyd had true crossover superstar potential. I mean Floyd could have been his generation's Sugar Ray Leonard and more–if he wanted to.
-Floyd is the dominant figure in American boxing. That's a testament to how well Mayweather has marketed himself as a heel, in conjunction with his talent. Floyd is a guy few love, and many love to hate.
-Floyd is a major attraction on HBO's World Championship Boxing. The premier network for boxing has a mutually beneficial relationship with Floyd as a cash cow. I guess we should credit Floyd for not bolting to Showtime, considering how he believes the broadcast team is racist, and Emanuel Steward is an "Uncle Tom". How Floyd perseveres through such oppression, I'll never know.
-Despite Floyd's ex-con dad, and rough background where he was surrounded by violence, Floyd has kept a relatively clean criminal record for all of his 32 years. Even though he was accused of attacking the mother of two of his children in a nightclub in 2003, and was tied to a recent shooting earlier this year at a skating rink, Floyd has been Teflon when it comes to the accusations.
-Floyd is very charitable with his time and money. I often get press releases reminding of this, and I have made sure to publish his deeds on this very site. Good for Floyd to make sure the world knows all the good that he does.
-Unlike Wesley Snipes and the late Leona Helmsley, Floyd realizes that you don't screw around with the IRS. When Floyd got a few million dollars behind on his tax debt, he was humble enough to obtain a loan from his business partner, Golden Boy, and paid it off. Smart move.
-Floyd will not allow himself to be bullied into taking fights he doesn't want to take. He's his own man. Whether it was a pre-cheat revealed Margarito, Miguel Cotto, or an aggressive, demanding Shane Mosley, Mayweather will fight whoever he wants and whenever he wants. It doesn't matter how uncompetitive, old or small the fighter. He won't be bullied into guilt. He's shameless.
-Floyd takes an interest in being part of his children's lives and prides himself in being a better father than Floyd Sr. was to him. This is very commendable of him Period
Inside the Ring
Floyd Mayweather is one of the greatest fighters of all-time by any measure. At 135 and below, he fought the best each division had to offer, and only struggled during his first fight with Jose Luis Castillo. His destruction of Diego Corrales at 130–when Corrales looked like a smaller Thomas Hearns in talent–was the best performance of his career. It was a beautiful display of power, handspeed, and defense.
Mayweather is probably the greatest defensive fighter I've seen in my lifetime. He has amazing reflexes, and executes a smooth, old-school shoulder roll. Floyd doesn't run or dance. He stays in front of you and makes you miss. He simply outclasses fighters. The only types of fighters that give him problems are the bigger, stronger, types who keep him on the ropes, maul him up, and pound him all over. See Castillo and De la Hoya For whatever it's worth, Manny Pacquiao isn't that type of fighter. Not saying who would win a Manny v. Floyd fight for my purposes here. I'm just stating facts.
Floyd always keeps his cool in the ring, and maintains a sense of being in control. During the chaos of his fight with Zab Judah, after intentionally being hit below the belt, he was the only person involved that kept a level head. He was actually a calming peace maker. He took control after the "in-ring brawl break", and dominated Judah down the stretch.
Going into his fight with Ricky Hatton, it was believed that the smaller, thuggish, Hatton would rough Floyd up with his apish tactics and occasional fouls; ultimately taking Floyd out of his game. Instead, Mayweather refused to be bullied, and actually displayed some roughhouse moves of his own as he began to potshot his way to victory. Let me also add, his knockout punch with the check-hook leading Hatton into the turnbuckle in comical fashion, was one of the most spectacular and entertaining of the decade.
Floyd has decent power for a pure boxer; and that's what he is–a pure boxer. 25 KO's in 40 bouts is impressive; particularly when we look at the quality of some of the KO victims. I strongly disagree with the criticisms Floyd received from writers like Dan Rafael for failing to knock out Juan Manuel Marquez. On a few different occasions, Floyd unloaded some vicious combinations in deliberate precise fashion. Marquez wouldn't drop. Why get wilder and overly aggressive against one of the best counter-punchers in the sport when you're way ahead on the cards? That wouldn't be wise at all. Floyd is a boxer, and if you look at the likes of Pernell Whitaker, or even the great Willie Pep, Floyd's KO percentage is excellent for a pure boxer.
Floyd Mayweather has never lost a fight, no matter what you think about his opposition.
Whether it's Paul Williams, Manny Pacquiao, or dozens of others, most all great fighters have had off nights and lost to inferior opposition. But not Mayweather. There's something to be said for that.
There you have it. I gave some love for Floyd Mayweather. If my tone seems different in certain parts, it is what it is. Take any explicit or implicit points however you feel. This is just how I feel about the guy. I'm trying real hard to be nice and cleanse my venom. Serenity now, serenity now. Notice I avoided the blood test stuff, because I've already hammered it to death.
But Speaking of Blood Tests
Shane Mosley and Andre Berto are fighting in a welterweight unification bout on January 30th. They've got a little bit of a feud going on that started on Twitter. Isn't it kind of interesting that Andre Berto isn't demanding any type of Olympic style blood testing for this bout? I mean Shane Mosley is a known, admitted, former user of performance enhancing drugs. He used them leading up to his second bout against Oscar De La Hoya, and he was victorious by outworking Oscar down the stretch to win a very, very close decision. He admits to taking the PEDs, though claims to not know exactly what was given to him at the time. He's linked to Bay
Area Laboratory Cooperative (BALCO); the notorious PED manufacturer of the past 15 years. Why isn't this fight under the umbrella of PED allegations, blood test demands and drama? Just sayin...
here's a simple answer for you, since you still try to slander floyd in as nice of a way as you can, it's because of the reason floyd has said himself, shane isnt a big money draw. shane wont be fighting anyone that will bring in $40-50 million per fighter. plain and simple, in the day and age where it seems that just about every top level athlete that is dominating their sport, they are tied to some form of PED. is it so horrendous of floyd to want to remove that cloud of doubt from this 'mega fight'??? or should we have to find out 3 years from now ala shane mosley? just sayin....

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a punk, pure and simple. He's a gutless faggot who won't fight the best, at their best, because he knows he'll lose. He's a good fighter, no doubt, but his reputation is built on a foundation of cans. Manny would destroy this little mouthy negro. I predict he'll end up like 'Pac and Biggie.

Floyd blew this one out BIGTIME!! Was'nt it long ago that Floyd said that the Pacquiao fight is easy and he's going to beat him silly? But why insist on having an Olympic type of drug testing - which is way beyond what the NSAC is requiring. If Floyd is so confident of beating Pacquiao why require something out of the ordinary? How Floyd who is supposedly "very confident of beating" Pacman and a self profess "greatest fighter of the world" refuse the fight and along with it the potential earnings up to $40 M? It just does'nt add up. Unless Floyd is the dumbest boxer of all time I think he's just simply scared - SCARED TO DEATH I should add. No amount of shoulder rolls nor backpedalling could prevent pacquiao's "punches from different & weird angles" to get thru.
BTW, you first read it here - this fight will still happened because of HBO and people like Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe. Yup, you are reading it right, Haymon and Ellerbe are going to put some sense into Floyd Jr's head after HBO flex its muscle and threaten to shun him and his future fights. With the boxing fans turning against him and HBO refusing to carry his fights Floyd will be lucky to earn $1M in his future fights. And when Floyd finally fight Pacman, the latter is going to beat the former black, blue and out cold. So much for Payback time. Remember, you read it here first.

I love this article. Hating Floyd too much will not do anything good for us boxing fans. Perhaps we need to understand that Floyd has his "own world" and "own understanding" what boxing greatness is all about.
If Floyd thinks being undefeated is more important than giving fans a great fight, so be it. If Floyd thinks avoiding quality fighter is more of a brilliant move rather than cowardice, so be it.
No amount of insult or attack can change the way Floyd think what boxing greatness is all about. Comparing him to Pacquiao and other ATGs is a waste of time. Floyd is Floyd.
It our choice if we buy his hype or not. Me, I no longer buy Floyd's hype of his greatness. This is the reason why I no longer hate him. I simply understand him. Peace.

Floyd won against Marquez.

Umm... you won't have to find out in 3 years. Umm, like... a bloodtest right after the fight?... Geez you Floydfans, I mean really... do your mindz really work that slow?

Libel. Slander is spoken, libel is written. Also, libel is untrue. I've not seen anything in this article that is false.

Finally you have written something nice to our idol. He will be forever great in our eyes. Floyd future is not just for boxing. He can also be an endorser of kentucky fried chicken(bigtime). And I hope he runs in the office like paquiao. He could be the president of all the chicken in the world
Posted By: chicken (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 04:55 AM
mosley is not a big draw? and chose marquez over mosley? do you know anything about boxing? admit it.. who among the top 5 welterweights did gayweather fought?! now he's planning to fight matt hatton?! #33 on the list? do you think matt hatton could generate him big money fight..just asking...
Posted By: knives (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 05:01 AM
me, no one's refusing a blood test only the way it will be conducted. for the first time that a challenger in Mayweather got lot of nerve to make a shot or demand against the reigning champion. reverse psychology eh? now everybody's doubting Pacquiao. Floyd is Floyd, big mouth and a ducker.
Posted By: you(guest) (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 06:03 AM
mayweather.the most bigheaded fighter i ever seen.bob arum is spot on when he has said if mayweather thinks he is going in with a guy who will beat him such as manny he will do everything to duck out of it and this guy call himself the best what a joke .
Posted By: marc glackin (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 06:27 AM
hey Me... did the fight w/ Baldomir earned Floyd 40-50 million dollars? ur so selective of ur logic...idiot.
Posted By: Yo! to me (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 06:31 AM
Right... and Malignaggi is a better money draw than Mosley. Stop making excuses for Floyd. Until he fights someone who poses a real challenge to him at this point in his career, he'll still be considered as a coward. Go tell Floyd to fight the likes of Williams or Mosley or Cotto.
Posted By: Shinji (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 06:37 AM
'me' - again, I feel like I'm doing circles here but I'll try to hammer this through to some of you - the 'cloud of doubt' that you speak of was created BY Floyd and his father. There was no previous major doubt as to whether Manny was on something, aside from the doubts that the public in general has about any and all muscular athletes. This was clearly a very clever ploy by Mayweather to get everyone on his side by saying that Manny MUST be cheating if he won't take a test. In reality, if Floyd had just said "this is a big fight, everyone watching wants it to be clean, I know we're both clean but let's take a test so there can be no doubt that whoever wins is the best in the world", then Manny would have accepted without even thinking about it. If he hadn't, that would be a pretty big indictment of him. As it stands, the Mayweathers just looks like cocks whose plan backfired badly.
Posted By: Cun\' (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 08:12 AM
Why don't you admit Floyd that you want to spank manny's balls? after you heard that the deal is off then you're trying to tell us like that, you can't fool people now they know that you are such a coward, a dodger,a cheater and most of all a loser.hahahahahhahahah
Posted By: james bond (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 08:52 AM
wow! what a piece, exactly how i would describe floyd. i have always been a fan of floyd's brilliance. how about pacquiao? what is more credible: pacquiao success is attributed to eating dogs or to PEDs? judging from where he came from, i'd say its because he's eating dogs. if he's from america, i would choose the latter.
Posted By: braveheart (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 09:44 AM
hey me, "is it so horrendous of floyd to want to remove that cloud of doubt from this 'mega fight'???" really you believe floyd is sincere on this? check out his last fight with marquez and see if he was a model of "removing any cloud" of cheating. be your own guest..
Posted By: donex7 (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 10:00 AM
All this drug testing circus is just really a way out cause all of Mayweather's bluffs failed.
Cluck Cluck Floyd.
Also, Floyd is just banking on the fact that when Manny lost to Morales he got tested before the fight not after. Apparently, this weakened him and also he was wearing 10lb gloves, which they also tried to propose to use in the fight. For a family of crooks the mayweathers sure are smart. lol
Posted By: ChickenHater (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 10:13 AM
its pacman hu got scared of floyd MONEY mayweather not other way round. and mayweather will ko him in about less then 5 rounds now thats facts the person who wrote this should retire.
Posted By: whatttttttt (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 10:30 AM
Indeed we should stay calm and circumspect about Floyd. Afterall, greatness in boxing is what many perceived you as such and not as you perceived yourself. I find Floyd to be not in the caliber of Manny, or way way way below, in greatness and in skills. It's how the way i see it and nothing can Floyd do about it even in his lifetime if he keeps on being just what Floyd is or "Floyd is Floyd". For me, it's "Me for me". Peace!!!
Posted By: gerry (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 10:35 AM
This is actually the first time that I read about your articles. People may not find this fair but at least is true from your heart, no blind loyalty nor sickening kissass love, unlike what I read about the other fighter. Its not that we love to bash other people's rep, we just want to see a good fight or be proven right or wrong. I will now go back and read some of your old articles.
Posted By: Anton (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 10:40 AM
@ floydz
only the fake boxing fans are turning against floyd.
@ A. Shakoor
Better article, although this testing issue is not floyds fault. He can ask for what he wants, it is up to the opponent to accept it or not. As others have said if Pac asked for such a thing and Floyd refused he would be hammered. Too many people are kissing Pacs behind. I think the 14 day compromise by Floyd was/and is acceptable.
To you non-fans...or shall I say Pac only fans, actually watch boxing more than 2 times a year. then maybe you may have some credibility.
Posted By: Just me (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 11:17 AM
@shinji
Why wont pac fight williams or mosley. Hmmmm
In any case if you are a REAL FAN dont watch either fighter until they fight each other....pass it on
Posted By: just me (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 11:38 AM
You ask for testing on a fight this big because if for some chance you lose you want to know it was 100% legit.
Posted By: reveal (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Chickenhater...you are an idiot. First gloves weigh in ounces not pounds. Second did floyd do to "get out of the fight". I promise some of you bandwagon riders irk me. You aint a boxing fan. Get some type of boxing knowledge then post.
Anyway, all this silly childish names people make up are getting old. Pacroid, Gayweather. Are you guys serious. You must be about 9 or 10. No senseable adult with atleast a middle school education said retarded stuff like that. Will the REAL BOXING fans please stand up. Stop allowing these lames to take over forums for REAL FANS.
Posted By: just me (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 12:44 PM
Your article shows exactly why so many people hate Floyd. Because Floyd is too damn good. He's unbeaten, he's one of the best defensive boxers in history, he has cross over appeal, he makes more in one fight then most boxers make in their career, and on top of that he's charitable and a good father. Most of the hate for Floyd comes from envy. He beat your favorite fighter with ease and now your mad, get over it, move on.
Posted By: Thanks (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 01:38 PM
1st off Floyd doesn't need Pac
2nd off, THIS IS THE BIGGEST FIGHT IN A REALLY LONG TIME. Why Olympic Testing is wrong? Its actually right, and Manny is proving that the theories of him being on roids is correct. Who cries about getting a small blood sample. Yall sissy's just like him
Posted By: Mak (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 02:31 PM
Team KFC (Kentucky Floyd Chicken) pushed its luck too far.
Question by KFC: why not agree to a 14-day test window?
Answer: Because in the first place Manny does not have to? No boxer in the world does it so why would KFC enforce it?
Posted By: Bob Allen (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 04:58 PM
Yea, Kudos for Money Boy being the "greatest" defensive fighters against B rated competition. He's never fought a Welterweight in their prime, as he is. And that list includes Mosley, Cotto, Clottey, Williams, Cintron, and a pre-cheat Margarito. I can't give props to a guy who won't fight people in his own division at their prime.
Posted By: LA Sam (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 05:37 PM
I am so sick of Pacfans and Pacmedia skewing the true. In this "steroid era" how can anyone complain about an athlete wanting more stringent testing? I wonder what the Pacfans and media would say if it were Pacman wanted more testing.
Are you idiots serious?????
Posted By: Guest (Guest) on January 08, 2010 at 11:08 PM
Pacfans the sad part is, the big names that Manny beat that you use to claim how great he is, FLOYD ALREADY BEAT.
Posted By: Poor Pac Fans (Guest) on January 09, 2010 at 01:08 PM
Its obvious that Pac is scared of Floyd. Pac is on some performence enhancers thats why he's so scared to fight Money.
