The Sweet Science 02.08.10: From One Great Fight to Two?

Comparing negotiations for what could possibly become the biggest boxing event in 21st century, much anticipated showdown between pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and self proclaimed king Floyd Mayweather Jr. to playing high stakes poker is not too far off the mark. Just when everything seemed to have been in place for turning over the cards, Mayweather raised (asking to change the rules with unreasonable demands for Olympic style blood tests). Just like in poker, this move was designed to gain a mental advantage, get into your opponents head. Pacquiao called his bluff and left the table.

Pacquiao promptly agreed to battle dangerous African welterweight Joshua Clottey. Taking place in Dallas at the Cowboys Stadium on March 13th, 2010, this fight is good for boxing and for the fans.

His hand forced, Mayweather had to make a move. Fighting a welterweight champion, Sugar Shane Mosley seemed like the right one. Only this time Mosley did not care about mental advantages or unreasonable demands; he would have probably agreed to fight Mayweather with his right hand tied behind his back. Mosley goes all in and signs a contract with all terms agreed by team Mayweather. Six days later the boxing world is holding its breath for Mayweather to call. "He is not going to fight Mosley," said Freddie Roach, a famous trainer of Manny Pacquiao while waiting for his star student to show up for a sparring session at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood:" This is all just a ploy to make his fight with Manny even bigger."

How about Manny? How does he feel about this situation?"Mayweather Senior, a convicted drug offender, makes allegations about steroid use," continued Roach:" And some of the fans choose to believe him. Manny is very upset. He wants to fight Mayweather in the worst way."

What if the fight with Mosley does take place and Mosley beats Mayweather?"Then Manny will fight Mosley," stated Roach:" It will be the only fight and would be the right thing to do."

What about the current opponent, who many experts consider a dangerous test, former world champion, Joshua Clottey? "I don't see any problems with Clottey," said Roach:" His defensive style is amateur. There should be no problems getting past that. I just don't want Manny to prove his manhood and stay on the ropes like he did with Cotto."

How about all the distractions, including Manny's political bid? "Manny lives with a lot of distractions," continued Roach:" That's the way he likes it. He lives and fights with a lot of distractions. But when he enters the gym, it's like he leaves everything outside, it's like he is in church."

Then the wait is over and Manny comes in to his church, Wild Card Boxing Gym. He smiles and shakes hands with every one of his constituents and gets right to work. A light sparring session is scheduled for today. Behind the ring a sign catches my eye, a quote by famous Johnny Tocco:" You gotta have balls to conquer the world." Manny Pacquiao's picture wearing Giants uniform is placed right below it. Watching Manny in sparring, you realize that you are witnessing something special; he is great, but that is the subject for another story.

While I was brainstorming this story the announcement was made that Mayweather did sign the contract to fight Sugar Shane Mosley on May1st, 2010 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. As my dad, a true intrigue monger would say;" As the plot thickens," both Mayweather and Mosley have agreed to Olympic style, random drug testing. So Mayweather goes all in and seems happy with his move. "This one is definitely for the fans as I wasn't going to waste anyone's time with a meaningless tune-up bout and asked to fight Shane immediately," said Mayweather. "I have said ever since I came back to the sport that I only wanted to fight the best. I think Shane is one of the best, but come May 1, he still won't be great enough to beat me."

His opponent is also very happy and relieved that Floyd has finally signed the contract."I have always wanted to fight Floyd and now it is finally coming true," said Mosley, who signed his side of the deal last Friday in Las Vegas. "I am already in great shape and ready to show everyone on May 1 that I am stronger, faster and better than he is. I will have no problem beating him."

So the negotiations for the biggest fistic event of the twenty first century have created two incredible fights, both tremendous battles all on their own, Pacquiao versus Clottey and Mosley Mayweather. But at the end of the day fans only want to see Pacquiao to fight Mayweather. Would these two battles be the prelude to their unavoidable showdown latter on this year?

I think this is more exiting it gives more heat for may-pac fight because I believed may-pac will happen this year. But I do hope that mayjr and pac will win their respective fight. Because they have no walk in the park in thier fight.

The mayweather mosley fight is by far the better fight of the two. The pac clottey fight will be an interesting match but clottey will need a hand from god to win.
Mayweather has come out of these failed negotiations with pac and bagged what could be the best fight of the year.

Floyd can be great if he matches his talent with humility. He knew how to sell his fight. And people are agitated to see him lose. A lose against Mosley will put him where he belongs. And it's gonna be a hard climb for him from there on.

the drug stipulation was there from the the get go, floyd didnt just raise it out of the blue

Yeah, that two excellent fights are better than a long Mayweather mental assault on Pacquiao just to be on a more advantageous start against the same. What will floyd gain not signing a Mosley deal except total downgrading of himself together with his career and lost of a big time opportunity for a mega hit once more. Now he can resume all his trash talking and bravado without sounding like a incomprehensible sound byte.Pacquiao against Clottey need no talking b/c the two will definitely entertainingly fight each other and wave at the huge crown after the fight. One with with a wry smile or diplomatic.

I disagree: I would rather see Manny v Mosley, simply because I think the fight actually has a chance of happening. If Floyd wins, then Mosley is buried and considered past his prime, and then we are right back to spquare one, with Manny and Mayweather at the top but refusing to fight each other.
If Mosley wins, I honestly think he will step up and fight Manny, and I think Manny will oblige. Worst case scenario for boxing? Clottey beats Pacman... ouch.

Igor, give me a break. Pac fighting "No Name" Clottey is NOT a good fight. Pac's fighting a stiff. I will not buy that fight on PPV, but will buy the Mayweather-Mosley match. I see Mayweather-Mosley doubling the PPV numbers of Pac-Clottey.

How could you seriously come up with this article. This is laugable!

You can't really be a boxing fan if you think Pac-Clottey is a good fight. Mayweather-Mosley, thats a fight. You know Mosley, that boxer Pac has been ducking for years. Glad Pac could go find another can to beat so you Manny Pacroid fans can whack off to it and keep telling yourself he's the best boxer.

If Clottey beats Pac that would be hilarious, but I'm sure Pac is loading up on the roids right now just incase.

Wow, those last three comments convinced me that they don't know anything about boxing. Those are two "second-best" fights building up to the #1 fight, plain and simple. Yes, agreed that Mayweather-Mosley is the bigger seller without a doubt. I will guarantee that the PPV numbers will be close but I think Mayweather's PPV will outsell Pacquiao's. Crowd wise, for obvious reasons, Pacquiao will fill that out.

Also, Pacquiao has been a welterweight for just barely over a year so how has he been ducking Mosley "for years"? Go do some homework.

Also aside from the "He won't take a test, hence he's on steroids" defense, none of you Pac-Haters have given one shred of proof that he is on any kind of steroid or PED. Since he was in the 130-lb. division up until his last fight, his fighting weight has ranged from 144-149. Give me some evidence and enlighten me. Please.

Don't fool yourselves. Neither of these bouts has the money making potential or appeal that the cancelled Mayweather-Pacquiao match did...

... and for that matter, the mainstream interest for Mayweather-Pacquiao is GONE now.

Mayweather-Mosley will be better than it has any right to be (I hope), but Pac-Clottey?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!!

No.

Poor Logan, Manny is a pussy and there's no defending that. He wouldn't take a 30 million dollar drug test because he's scared of needles. Just admit it, your boy is shook. The money Mayweather is going to take in over Manny on his fight will be astronomical.

In the history books Mayweather will go down as undefeated and one of the best pure boxers of our time. Manny will go down as a steroid user who is scared of needles.

People crucified Bonds for not wanting to take a drug test, Manny does the same thing and people hug his nuts. What a joke.

Um, Bonds did take a drug test...

Guest#8042 give me proof Manny's on steroids aside from "He's hiding something" and I'll shut up. If there is that little thing called EVIDENCE, then he deserves to get ripped and discredited for everything he's done, especially the past 4-5 years. But let's call a spade a spade right now. There's NO proof.

I never discredited Mayweather as great because I know he is one of the if not the best in the sport. He IS one of the best pure boxers of his generation. Probably the best defense in the sport right now that I've ever seen. I know what he's capable of and he was at his greatest at super featherweight and lightweight. He was practically untouchable when he beat up guys like Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo. But ever since he jumped to welterweight, it's all about the money, not the legacy, hence why EVERYONE is calling him out on that alone.

And for the record, Manny agreed to 3 tests which WILL REQUIRE NEEDLES: One at the press conference, one 24 days before the fight, and one IMMEDIATELY after the fight. I honestly would've jumped at Mayweather's offer of 14 days before the fight but he didn't and that left me scratching my head and feeling disappointed.

As I said earlier, Barry Bonds did take a drug test and he admitted as such in that very short reality show he had on ESPN. He also admitted that he unknowingly took steroids (which I think is BS and I'm a fan of his).

Don't bring a knife to a gunfight because obviously you're not prepared.

Yeah, that's what I thought. You got nothing. See if your BS argument holds up in court. Buh bye.
