Inside the Ropes 03.15.10: Clottey As Bad As He Wants to Be
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 03.15.2010
In truly embarrassing fashion, Joshua Clottey came to Arlington with upset on his mind, but was content to let Pacquiao do all the punching while he covered up like a scared turtle. My thoughts on Clottey’s pathetic showing as well as a little “BANG!” in this week’s edition of Inside the Ropes.

As I sat down to write this column, I knew my topic would have to be Joshua Clottey. While most writers will no doubt deservedly praise Manny Pacquiao this week for another dominant performance (I'll do that later), there was just no way I couldn't address Clottey's lack of just about everything on Saturday night in front of nearly 51,000 fans.
Coming into the fight, while Pacquiao was favored by just about everyone I talked to, most conceded that Joshua Clottey was at least a stern test if not a dangerous opponent. "High risk, low reward" as was justifiably noted by our own Ali Shakoor a few months ago. A fighter who has impeccable defensive skills and is heavy handed enough to shake you, Clottey (35-4, 20 KOs) hoped to at least give Pacquiao something to think about during their welterweight fight. Needless to say, after twelve uneventful and painful-to-watch rounds, the only thing the Ghanaian fighter proved was just how afraid he was of boxing's pound for pound king.
Look, I've seen fighters get plastered all over the ring by Manny such as David Diaz who at least fought his heart out in their fight before ending up face first on the canvas; and hell he was on that card too, doing his best to actually win his fight; but what Clottey did in that ring was both an embarrassment and a slap in the face to boxing fans everywhere who were on hand or shelled out $50-$60 to watch the fight.
Clottey didn't come to fight let's be honest here. No, Clottey showed up to be a punching bag and collect a check. In fact, his post-fight smiling and hugging made me ill. How can a guy who did absolutely nothing but cover up smile? You could just hear the fans collectively wondering: "What the hell is this guy so happy about?" I'll tell you what he's happy about – that he stayed on his feet and took part in a 12-round sparring session. For a guy who yearns for the big opportunities and was so ecstatic to get the fight, he sure as hell didn't fight like it. Cry me a river if this is the last title opportunity Joshua Clottey gets; after Saturday night, he doesn't deserve one.
As for Manny Pacquiao, I'll just say that I give him full credit for doing everything he could in his power to try and get Clottey to exchange. That he didn't panic but rather stayed composed and patient while he tried to break apart the guard of his challenger (if we can even call him that) speaks volumes. It's yet another dominant performance by the sport's best and we can only hope that the winner of Mayweather vs. Mosley is next.
As for the rest of the card – utter crap.
Neither undercard fight was watchable and for a card dubbed "The Event", this was more like "The Joke". Jose Luis Castillo was another fighter who had no business in the ring and made no real effort to do anything. He's a broken down shell of his former self and I'm glad that he announced his retirement after the fight.
John Duddy…well let's just say that Duddy has proven once again that he doesn't belong with any top-10 fighter at junior middleweight or middleweight in the immediate future – if ever.
Soto vs. Diaz was somewhat decent but even that was a stretch. Soto went from being a threat to anyone at junior lightweight and lightweight to a probably stepping stone. He looked terrible! Props to David Diaz for at least doing what he does best – do what it takes to try and win. It simply wasn't enough on Saturday.
Jim Lampley Tirade
In my years covering and watching the sport, never have I witnessed a broadcast commentator do something that both made me laugh and shake my head in disgust. During the 8th round of Pacquiao's sparring match with Joshua Clottey, Jim Lampley, probably from boredom and frustration began to shout "BANG!" over and over again as he narrated Pacquiao's punching. You see, Clottey wasn't doing a damn thing and so Lampley must have felt the need to entertain himself and the audience by getting all comic book on us. Every time Pacquiao threw a punch (and hell, even when he didn't) shouts of "BANG, BANG!" came from the HBO broadcast booth. You can actually follow this link to see video of the tirade.
It's really tough to react to it one way or another but while I found it quite comical, I can assure you there will be plenty who won't, perhaps even including HBO themselves. To say it was out of line, and unprofessional is pretty accurate in my opinion and while I understand Lampley's eagerness to see some action, there's just no need to behave like that especially coming from one of the most respected broadcast journalists in the sport.
Hear what I'm saying Jim? BANG! BANG! Get it together next time, BANG, BANG - B A N G ! ! !
Random Thoughts
- If there's one positive to come out of Saturday night's action, aside from it becoming crystal clear that Pacquiao's next opponent MUST be Mosley or Mayweather, it's the atmosphere that having a show at such an incredible stadium created. The presentation was spectacular and real boxing fans got the chance to attend.
- Fighters I don't care to see on TV anymore include: John Ruiz, John Duddy, Rocky Juarez, Joshua Clottey, Billy Dib, Sultan Ibrogimov and Roy Jones. Our own Patrick Cassidy has a column on the way that touches on this particular topic so be on the look out for it.
- The dark (non-televised) undercard of "The Event" was better than the televised portion.
- Let's hope the New Cowboys Stadium gets more major fights in the future. In fact, let's get more boxing in stadiums and decrease the amount of Las Vegas fights.
- I wonder what a telecast commentated by Max Kellerman and Larry Merchant would sound like. Just saying.
- Top Rank may have put together a stinker on Saturday but if there's one thing they're doing right so far this year, it's their Top Rank Live cards. They've been great and I hope the streak of excellent bouts continues.
- Another big thank you to all you readers who tuned in for my live coverage of The Event. Hope to see you guys in the future!
Until next time, see you at the fights!

I'm not surprised about Lampley, funny thing is he has done this before. HBO really needs a new broadcasting crew.
Lampley is on probation for slapping a woman around
Lennox lewis suffers from the same problem he had as a boxer, Everytime he opens his mouth he sounds more butler then fighter. He's just boring
and Max Kellerman well both ESPN and Fox sports didn't seem to miss him. Despite his knowledge of boxing, he's just plain annoying.
I miss George Foreman, I wish Bobby Czyz could get another chance, just make sure he has a driver

it's clear that clottey is not ready for the moment given him. he's not ready for the crowd, he's overwhelmed by the money involved, he doesn't even have a real trainer. he's just happy to be there made things simple by just showing up, collect his paycheck later, and maybe use the earnings for fulfilling an immigrant dream in new york of opening a business like a restaurant.
but being a world champion is just to much for his simple mind.

i am a solid paquiao fan but in fairness to clottey ,what he did was not his full intention that he just show his face in the fight and be happy to collect his money ,clottey has been punched 1200 or more times and it's not just punches it's manny paquiao's punches look what happened to oscar dela hoya and miguel cotto's faces

Your Las Vegas correspondent would like you to STFU. Thank you and good night.

Clottey is somewhat a victim of himself .During the pre-fight interviews he made an assurance that he is ready and will surprise the world.Like he felt he never lost at all and he is a fighter like he doesn't recognize his losses at all.He even brought the African chin to the his statement that because of what they eat and being an African ,Ghanain specifically he is having a granite chin. Then those are good statement for an expected competitive fight. However during the fight once he got the reality check for himself that Pacquiao's power punches are indeed true ,both his gloved hands is almost permanently attached to his facecovering his supposedly granite chin of the Africans. It means if he get knockout during the fight the whole African chin are prospect and it is because of his general claim. He is controlling hi breath everytime he receive body punches from Pacquiao.Relentless pacquiao gave him no time relax his body breath controlling muscles ,look at his picture in a contured painful shape.Pacquiao never stop attack to make the fight somewhat exciting,Clottey was just a fixture in there.

It's honestly sad to see the Clottey hate.

i think there is something going on behind the backdoor..if you watch at clottey's previous fight, he engaged with his opponent but in his fight with pacquiao he did not do anything...it is in my opinion that the fight was cooked in preparation for a megafight with either mosley or mayweather..

clottey was watching too much of pacquiao's fight before, that's the reason why hes always on defense. hes scared to get ko.

A negative comments and showing disgust by words. Have you ever seen the previous fights of Clottey? Just because of what happened during the Pacquiao fight, you've all downgraded the ability of Clottey to fight. Have you ever experienced in your life when you are awed by someone that you become incapable of doing anything against that person? This is what happened to Clottey. He is awed at Pacquiao's power and ability as a boxer. Did you see him during the weigh in? How he see Pacquiao with great respect and admiration. Don't count Clottey out. Except our one and only Pacquiao, I believe Clottey will beat all the rest of the welterweights!

it would be easy to talk and talk. had we been in clottey's shoes, the show would be more laughable.
let us just respect him.
to manny, thank you again for making us filipino proud.

Lampley gave the best performance of the night. He proved that HBO still has the best commentary team. ESPN is awful. Showtime is unnoticeable, but at least HBO tries to keep it exciting.

This is a very good post. I'm not a top pro or anything and I'm not pretending to be, but I am a very solid boxer in my region. I happened to run up into the best boxer in the area, a guy that is actually a pro in the world ranks in a spar. I was taking it seriously too, but I felt pretty much paralyzed. A lot of people were watching and I specifically remember there were two guys that were making really negative comments. I guess they had to be kinda loud too that I could hear them.
Anyway those people making the comments suck...they aren't even amateurs. They don't even compete. I don't know why they are even in the gym, I guess they just like to criticize others and I guess maybe they train when none of us are looking.
My guess is it's like it was for me. Pacquaio is the same type of fighter but just does everything a tiny bit better. That tiny bit makes it look like the opponent is completely clueless and doesn't do anything, when in reality it's just Pacquaio is shutting everything down and it feels like he is thinking the same thing every time. You need a different style to stay competitive with somebody that is better, if you have the exact same style and they are just better, it is absolutely hopeless.

i don't agree with moving the big fights away from Vegas. It's part of the towns hisory, and every fighter MMA/Boxing dream of fighting in Vegas.

I wondered what Clottey was thinking? So frustrating to watch him not giving anything to win or at least put on a show. It was his chance in the limelight and he blew it. Poor Lampley must be frustrated as I am with Clottey that he vent his anger with Manny's combo. Man Arum should put a more quality undercard. I hope Floyd won't be discouraged to fight Manny after what just happened at the Event.
Posted By: Guest (Guest) on March 15, 2010 at 04:20 PM
The undercard was terrible, I mean beyond defending at all. Duddy has decided to become more of a boxer, which to me makes him completley uninteresting. The only thing that guy had going for him was a willingness to fight in crowd pleasing face first brawls. Castillo-Gomez was terrible. Its hard to take Gomez seriously, especially after he was destroyed by Cotto. And Castillo? That was just sad. No need to take shots at a legend. After May of '05, he can do anything he wants and owe the fans nothing. Soto-Diaz just didn't have any flow to it, and I've just never been able to get excited about a Soto fight. The main event was a bit disappointing, but at the end of the day, Clottey fought like Clottey. The Cotto fight was only interesting because it was close, but the action was average. If Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao can't get a good fight out of you, no one can. Clottey is good, but boring. I think Lampley freaking out was embarrasing, but I know why he did it. Here's a guy in the prime of his career blowing the biggest fight of his life, by not throwing. Blowing an important fight for the sport, in front of 51,000 fans, with the sports best and most exciting fighter in front of him, who may be retiring in the near future.Which leads me to this. Hey Arum? Don't blow this for US..the fans. Don't stick Pacquiao in with Foreman, Malignaggi, Margarito etc. Your an old man, who has made a fortune in this sport. Its time to give back. You have the greatest offensive fighter of this generation in your stable. The greatest defensive fighter of this generation is in another. Swallow your pride and give the fans the fight they want.6or once its our turn, and you owe it to us. Don't worry we'll pay you back tenfold when its all said and done.

Just to reiterate the point about Vegas. I don't want them gone from Sin City. In fact, there's nothing like watching a prizefight at the MGM Grand but I do think we need more quality, big-time fights in areas where real fans can attend and not just high rollers. A good mix of the two would be welcomed!

Fixed fight. Clottey could have pounded the Pacman if he'd actually unloaded anything...Pacquaio was twitching like a freak the few times he did get hit and his face was marked up from maybe half a dozen solid jabs at most. Stop blowing smoke up Manny's ass and admit that none of his work bothered Clottey, and this fight was a put-up to keep all the sheep indoctrinated to how 'great' he is. Mayweather will knock him out in ten rounds.
