Ringside WIth Raymundo 08.27.10: Short Shots
Posted by Raymundo Dioses on 08.27.2010
This week, random thoughts on the sweet science. Read or die! No really, but read or possibly get punched...
-First things first, the bottom line is this: Neither Antonio Margarito or Manny Pacquiao has signed a contract to sign each other. Until both do, who knows who Pacquiao's opponent will be come November.
- About Margarito: if he didn't know, then I guess he didn't know. But he should have known, and should respect the fact that it's not his trainer's fists going into the ring, it's his. He is responsible for the two hands he throws at his opponent every time he steps in the ring. He is still going to fight, whether it's against Pacquiao or not. We have to face it: Antonio Margarito is still going to fight professionally, so root for him or root against him, but he's here. What will be sad is to have to wait 30 to 40 years to finally have a trainer/fighter confession like with the HBO documentary based on fighter Luis Resto and trainer Panama Lewis.
-The postponement of Rafael Marquez and Juan Manuel Lopez is yet another disappointment in the year of boxing that is 2010. My thinking though is that it may be a god-send for Bob Arum and Top Rank, because I just plain don't see Lopez winning that fight, even though Marquez is in his twilight. If and when Lopez loses, Arum can kiss goodbye his dreams of a Gamboa v. Lopez super bout in 2011.
-Adamek v. Haye: who cares. It's two boxers not fighting to see who is the best Heavyweight in boxing; rather, it's who is the second best. Oops, I mean who's the THIRD best Heavyweight in the world behind the brothers Klitschko. Who cares who came in third in a race?
-Who should Juan Manuel Marquez fight next? Who cares. Just get that man in the ring. He is one of the purest boxers in the game and I would like to see him fight as much as possible before his skills being to fade.
-I just can't wrap my brain around the logic as to why Alfredo Angulo said no to $750k. In my belief, he had slightly more than just a punchers' chance against Martinez, and he would have been the most viewed HBO fighter this year with three fights on the network.
-Evander Holyfield is still fighting! The "Real Deal" will be 48 by the time he fights on November 5 against Sherman Williams. I was on a now defunct radio program, Fight Net Radio, and was the lone radio host who was FOR Holyfield still fighting, and that was three whole years ago. It boggles the mind that he is still fighting, but as long as he is able, why not? Holyfield has been one of the most consistently conditioned boxers in the last few decades, so as long as the body moves, Holyfield wants his fists flying. So let him. And in retirement, please make Holyfield take young Heavies' under his wing and show them what a conditioned Heavyweight should look like.
-Speaking of old, Don King turned either 79 or 80 recently. It's funny that ii this stage of his career, he is afforded the opportunity to resurrect this career with making the biggest fight in boxing. If King somehow saves is able to secure the twice felled Pac v. May fight, thinking would change towards him, and he would completely redeem himself! (Dumb and Dumber reference)
- Don't miss any Ivan Calderon fights, ever. He is a deftly talented fighter who is the slickest in lace up shoes and trunks. It's an art to see him make his opponents miss.
-I am all for Judah making a comeback in 2010. Thus far, he is doing it right by going back to his previous promoter and fighting on ESPN as opposed to waiting to be featured on HBO again. He is working his way up again, which is very noble and I wish him the best.
-Get Miguel Cotto in the ring, now! He's not getting any younger. Let him beat up on Chavez wannabe Chavez Jr., beat up on Pavlik or be in a slugfest with Angulo.
- Paul Williams and his camp need to give up their hopes of landing a welterweight fight. Not to mention the Pacquiao or Mayweather fight they continue to pursue. All the while, Sergio Martinez is right there for a rematch, and no welterweight is going to give up the size advantages that Williams possesses.
-My thoughts on James Toney fighting this weekend in the UFC: I would have rather him finish his career in 14 ounce gloves, but if he can be successful in mixed martial arts, I wish him the best. From what I've heard though, Randy Couture is one of the best of all time. Couture is probably not a smart choice of opponent for a first career fight. Will I be watching? Not a chance. Boxing is it for me.
-Pacquiao trainer was recently quoted as saying this about a possible trilogy between his fighter Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez: "I'd like to see a third fight, cause I'd like to shut Marquez up." You've got to love how outspoken Roach is. He has now blasted both Mayweather and Marquez. Classic. If it leads to either fighters gloving up against Pacquiao, we all win.
