The Way I See It: 09.02.10: The Last Margarito-Pacquiao Discussion
Posted by Joe Roche on 09.02.2010

In light of the week long love public relations blitz being carried out by Top Rank for their November 13th sham of a super welterweight title fight I thought this week would be the perfect opportunity to ask a very real question…

Am I supposed to simply ignore Pacquiao-Margarito?

My reason for asking this question stems in large part from Twitter activity that began sometime around the initial Pacquiao-Margarito Beverly Hills press conference and went right through the week (or at least right through the New York leg of the trip). The entire episode began when Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports asked his twitter followers (of which I am one) whether or not they thought Margarito knew about the hand wraps, and whether or not his followers would purchase the Pacquiao-Margarito fight (HBO Sports has confirmed a $54.95 SD price tag)?

Iole and I have had pretty lengthy discussions in the past as it pertains to the Margarito issue but on the issue of Margarito and Pacquiao we both seem to be in agreement (and Kevin please correct me if I'm wrong) – this fight is a disgrace.

Here is where things get interesting (that might not be true) as certain members of the twitter boxing community started asking this question – "will you stand by your convictions and refuse to cover the fight?"

Personally I find this question to be ludicrous – the idea of not covering an event simply because I disagree with the principles is the complete antithesis of journalism. If I only covered issues that I agreed with this column would be a relatively boring one – you'd click on a link and the text would read "everything in boxing is perfect" the end, every week.

However, while the question is ridiculous the idea isn't…I'm opposed to everything that has surrounded Margarito – Pacquiao. I think it's disgraceful that Texas has allowed Margarito the opportunity to fight in Texas while California has refused to license the fighter, I think it's disgraceful that Top Rank has so boastfully ignored the rules, laws, and procedures of professional boxing throughout this charade of an apology tour, I think it's disgraceful that Top Rank has ignored the better options available to them for their star pupil (Freddie Roach has said he lobbied for a Marquez rematch), and I think it's a disgrace that Top Rank has found it appropriate to reward a KNOWN cheater with a career making payday and a spotlight bout against the biggest draw in boxing.

With all of that said – the following paragraphs of this column will be the ONLY text that I write about Margarito-Pacquiao for 411mania.com. I am removing myself from all fight coverage, all news coverage, all press releases, all press conferences, all fight hype – I will not be a party to this bullshit.

The Way I See It: Top Rank has played us all like fools. The boxing media, the boxing fans, the general fans, the sports fans, the general population – everyone and anyone who pays attention to sports, or hell news in general should be ashamed at how Top Rank has behaved throughout this charade.

Antonio Margarito broke the rules.

Period, end of story.

As a fighter you are not only responsible for yourself, but you are responsible for your employees.

But as an employer, you are responsible for your employee's actions as well – it's call respondeat superior, and as a result of that do you know who really should feel the brunt of the Margarito failings? Top Rank and Bob Arum.

If Margarito should know what his trainer is doing, Top Rank should sure as shit know what their fighters and fight teams are doing. Arum was just as much at fault for the Margarito situation as Margarito – there should have been someone with Top Rank who knew what was happening in that dressing room, and once again I reiterate that but for Naazim Richardson we would be talking about a much different story today.

So Top Rank and Margarito get caught. Margarito fires his trainer and disappears for a little while. He can't fight in the US so he takes a stay busy fight in Mexico. Except that he trains in Oxnard, California – even though he wasn't licensed to box in California, which means he wasn't able to fight in California under --- you know --- the LAW. For the second time Margarito and Top Rank broke the rules (this time the California State Laws). Of course you also have to take into consideration that Margarito (and by association Top Rank) brought in a new trainer …in California…in direct conflict with the established law of the State. So Margarito trains in California (illegal) with a trainer who is a licensed trainer in California (illegal) all in an effort to prove that he's reformed (bullshit).

Margarito wins his stay busy fight in Mexico at 154 pounds though he looks lousy and the fight is not seen by anyone of any repute because it's on Top Rank pay per view with very little advertising budget. Margarito applies for his licensed in Nevada who essentially tells him to go screw because California took his license and he should re-apply their first…not a direct violation of any rules but once again Top Rank and Margarito are showing a severely poor lack of judgment.

Margarito goes back to California and are denied by a vote of 5-1. Luckily for Margarito the U.S. has one of the most corrupt athletic associations in the country in Texas and they will gladly license him to fight even though two previous states rejected his application and he's been flaunting his arrogance across the country for the better part of a year.

Let me remind you once again – had Naazim Richardson not been around, we'd be having a VERY different conversation right now.

So Top Rank and Margarito essentially avoid a Billy Collins like situation because the opponent's trainer had a watchful eye on the hand wraps, but instead of showing any contrition they spend two years essentially thumbing their nose at everyone in any position of power because they KNOW that they have Texas to fall back on.

And you're wondering why I will not write a single word about this fight after this column?

Antonio Margarito doesn't deserve this fight for two reasons, the first should be obvious – his behavior since the Shane Mosley locker room incident has been deplorable at best, illegal at worst. But moreso then that, he's fought once at 154 pounds, he is 1-0, and his 1 win was against a relative nobody and he looked poor to boot.

Top Rank also deserves some blame here and it's clear that their sole motivation for giving Margarito this fight is so they can retain the entire purse for their own greedy hands. No Marquez fight because that would mean Golden Boy gets a piece, and the list of "unworthy" contenders reads like a who's who list of outside Top Rank promoters and you can give me all the "business decision" bullshit that you want but nobody knew Joshua Clottey and they still made that fight, a Timothy Bradley fight would be just as profitable (and a better fight).

Top Rank has proven from the beginning of this saga that there is only one thing that they care about…Top Rank. They don't care about the health or well-being of fighters that aren't TR guys; they don't care about the viability of the sport, or giving people what they want. They'll put their cash cow against any fighter in their stable no matter how unworthy just so they can keep the full purse and fatten their own wallets.

So there it is folks – the only thing I will say about this fight or these fighters until after November 13th. I'm sure there are plenty of guys on the 411Boxing Staff who will talk at length about Pacquiao-Margarito but I won't be one of them.

You are wrong buddy. It is not illegal for Margarito to train in California. You don't need a license to train. You only need a license to fight.

Other than that little, but important, oversight, I agree with you. Margarito does deserve to get a fight against Pacquiao, at least not yet. He should prove himself some more first. I do believe in giving everyone a 2nd chance, but it is too soon for Margarito.

Hey JOE, guys like u are so ANNOYING. You guys act and talk like "SAINTS". LOL. SANTO SANTITO, ur a fool JOE. LOL. Why deprive yourself of a fight of this magnitude that has the makings of an all out war? Your dumb, man.

So what if Margacheato cheated? So what if Margacheato will have a big payday (are u envious.LOL)?

This is Boxing. We talk about an immoral sport. A Brutal sport where two boxers are risking their lives to make a living. Like it or not, your not a saint. Your just a DOT in this world of imperfection.

So my advice to you Joe, stop worrying about the legalities of this fight (Ur not a lawyer to begin with, stop thinking of the BIG Payday he'll get (Ur not GOD to control the blessings he showers to anyone), and please stop commenting about the fight (coz its so GAY).

WATCH the fight. Pacquiao is a once in a lifetime fighter.

I'm with you 100%. For me to believe Margarito didn't know his hands were loaded, then I would have to believe that he'd never had a clean wrap, not as a kid, not in sparing, and not in a fight.

Every fighter I've ever known is very particular about how his hands are wrapped.

He could have killed any of his previous opponents and arguably did kill Cottos career.

The Texas Athletic Commission is a joke and every journalist covering this fight should make sure that is reported in every story...in fact, that should be the lead.

Agree 100% Joe. Thank you for standing up and calling this fight the sham that it is. I am so very tired of seeing a blurb about this fight everytime I come to this site. It's a slap in the face of boxing and the other writers in the boxing section should stop treating this as a major fight. It's disgusting and I for one will not be watching...

Before you condemn someone look yourself first in the mirror... We all deserve second chances. I can only agree with 100% if you don't commit sin in your life!

mosley is also a known cheater. he also broke the law, yet, floyd was never criticized for fighting a cheater. double standard?

Again and again, why should Margarito be allowed to fight? Its very logical approach, the state allow Margarito to fight SM even though they had suspected hand wrap.Second, one year suspension had been served so why not give him a chance?

don't like it then don't watch it, but i doubt it...

"Top Rank has so boastfully ignored the rules, laws, and procedures of professional boxing" - what a biased statement - which laws are you referring to? The problem is the commission rules, or lack thereof, or lack of unified national rules. How is this Top Rank's fault?

"a Marquez rematch" - did you miss Marquez fighting at 142? did you not see how he can't carry the weight?

"ho really should feel the brunt of the Margarito failings? Top Rank and Bob Arum." - this is funny. So Golden Boy should feel the brunt of Roger Mayweather's assault charges as well? or Floyd's unpaid bills? or are we only talking boxing related. So who pays for a boxer's low blows? How about when you bite the other guy's ear off??

"If Margarito should know what his trainer is doing, Top Rank should sure as shit know what their fighters and fight teams are doing. " - Geez, it just doesn't stop. You think Top Rank should know what their fighters are eating? getting enough fiber? running enough? sleeping enough?

You also conveniently forget that Marga fought after the 1 yr ban... small detail.

Tim Bradley... right...check Boxrec dude. The guy had always fought at 140 until recently at 146 against Abregu. And his most famous opponent ever is...nate campbell. At least Clottey fought Margarito, Judah, Cotto, Corrales all at around 147! Hmmm...which one made sense?

I'm not even a Marga or Top Rank fan but your reasoning ain't crash hot to say the least. Goodbye. At least we won't hear from you until November. But I don't believe you. You will write about this.

Incidentally, two of the greatest fights in history were paid for by murdering plundering dictators. Guess? Would you go up to the Greatest and tell him how greedy and immoral he was for taking the fights and the money? I doubt it. And that, is called hypocrisy.

Who cares if you're not going to cover this event. You'll be the one to be sorry about not personally witnessing a history unfold.

I don't care if Margarito WAS a cheater. , I have no EVIDENCE that he was, only a belief (a.k.a. speculation or surmise) that he was. What I care about is whether or not this will be an entertaining fight, well worth for the money I'm prepared to shell out for it.

I am 100% sure that all the critics of Pacquiao-Margarito encounter would watch the fight. Dan Rafael, Kevin Iole, Joe Roche and many others would definitely watch the fight.

This could be a great fight. Margarito is not the joke you guys make him out to be. He has had some great fights, holds the record for most amount of punches thrown in a fight. Can take shots like no one else in the weight class and has a rock solid chin.

He went toe to toe with williams, and I think won, but hey it is debatable. Now he is moving up in weight and with his tall frame has a distinct advantage in doing so.

I'm not saying what he did was not wrong, but the fight is on, it is going to be great, and you complaining about it only proves how stupid you are.

Another Moralist and his self-righteousness...
at least try to be credible on our opinion by supporting each of your argument with facts from boxing histories who?, why?, and when?. case in point, 1.Margarito suspension- 2 commission personnel on dressing room with Marga for hand wrapping and are not aware of the insert, thanks to Naazim he caught it.commision persomel claims that Margo appear not to know the insert (debatable right?). the trainer who is doing the wrapping can not claim so that is why he was suspended for life. 2. Margo got slapped with 1year suspension. did the time and suspension was lifted. (he would do 2-3 year suspension if california commission asked him to but only gave him a year off. why? i do not know. maybe they know its too harsh of punishment because he has a loaded gun but he did not fire the gun (like carrying a loaded gun in your car glove compartment can be cited but not jailed). and 3.That what all these argument are all about that is why ARUM fighting it because of his lawyer profession. is it wrong? (wrong in your opinion). so the questions remain, who is the best opponent for Pacquiao after the ducker Floyd did not even give a damn explanation why he turned down the fight (these is a matter of opinion again)but to make a fight inside a two month time window, you need less to none contract negotiations conflict to make it happen. I GUESS I'LL WAIT FOR YOUR ANSWER ON YOUR NEXT ARTICLE is it November 14 after being glad that you have watch the fight?

mosley did get his chance cause he did admit using that without nowing it was ilegal after he did he stoped and came clean!!!! Why didnt margarito sue capetillo? why does he still train with him? either way bob arum is just hurting the sport and when floyd fought mosley they did the doping system to prove they were clean!
