Rumors had been rampant over the last few weeks that the catchweight for the September 19 fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. had been bumped up to 147 pounds. But according to Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions, "the fight was signed at 143-144 pounds, no more, no less and that's how it's going to be."
Gomez said he had heard of the supposed rumors but didn't pay much attention to them until Juan Manuel Marquez contacted him to find out if it was true.
"When a fight is set between 141 and 147 pounds, it's considered a welterweight fight since it's already past the junior welterweight limit [of 140 pounds] and perhaps that caused a misconception, but we [GBP] along with Marquez are comfortable with the fight [at the signed catchweight]."
