"Road to Redemption" card nearly cancelled after massive weight failure.
It seemed like only a year ago that the buzz was "catchweights are becoming a bad trend." Now it's missing weight.
After last week's debacle in Texas on the Camacho Jr./Campas scales with four fighters missing weight, the bug has reared its ugly head in Las Vegas at the Palms Hotel & Casino. At the weigh-in for "Road to Redemption" (which, by the way, started an hour and forty minutes late), a seemingly-mundane pre-fight task turned almost comical when none of the headliners made weight.
I repeat: not one single fighter on the Zab Judah/Ubaldo Hernandez pay-per-view card made their contracted weight.
The dark undercard, which featured fun local talent in light welterweight prospect Anthony Lenk (5-1, 3 KOs) and undefeated Las Vegas lightweight Sharif Bogere (12-0, 7 KOs), fulfilled their duties in making their weight classes. But on the televised portion, from Judah himself down to his protoge, Ron Johnson, not a single one made their weight class.
UPDATE: The card will proceed. Unfortunately, Lenk and Bogere will not fight due to lack of opponents. Doors open at 6pm.
The weights:
Zab Judah 145 vs. Ubaldo Hernandez 145*
*Five pounds over jr. welterweight limit.
Joel Casamayor 146 vs. Jason Davis 146*
*Casamayor & Davis weighed in three pounds over the contractual limit.
Ron Johnson 186 vs. Dumont Welliver 174*
*Welliver weighed in sweats; Johnson, at first a half pound over the cutoff, stripped to make some sort of weight.
Non-televised.
Salvador Sanchez 124 vs. Jose Pacheco 124
Joseph Judah 148 vs. Joel Gonzalez 149
Toddy Junior 129 vs. Brice Yeniki 125
