And guess who was in attendance.
Last night, there was an exciting night of boxing at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Tampa, Florida. In the main event, Keith "One Time" Thurman ,11-0-1, 10 KO's won a unanimous decision over Edvan Barros, 10-8-1, 7KO's. This was Thurman's first time going the distance, though he did score an 8-count knockdown in round seven. Among the undercard fighters, Nick "The Showstopper" Iannuzzi got back on the winning track after a KO loss in September. He knocked out Columbus, Ohio's Michael Alexander in round two. John Johnson, the trainer/manager of former heavyweight champion, James Buster Douglas was in Alexander's corner.
Speaking of trainers, Nate "The Galaxxy Warrior" Campbell worked the corner of hot young 130 pound prospect, Cordaro Simpkins, who moved to 3-0 after slugging out a unanimous decision victory. Campbell resides in Tampa, Florida now and seems to be establishing an eventual post-boxing career as a trainer and manager.
Several Tampa area boxing related celebrities were in attendance, including: Angelo Dundee, Winky Wright, Jeff Lacey, and trainer Jimmy Williams. Dundee and Williams are among several individuals who will be inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame next week at the Performing Arts Center in Tampa, Florida.
