Haye Slays The Beast
Posted by Michael Payne on 11.07.2009

It was in no way the most exciting fight you will witness but David Haye did what was required to capture the heavyweight crown.

From the outset Haye did what he needed to do. He had a disciplined game plan and stuck to it. Hitting and moving and making Valuev look bad. The only down side was if he had been aggressive enough.

Valuev looked extremely one dimensional from the outset looking predictably slow and robotic, trying to throw his jab at Haye. The majority of the rounds looked very hard to score. Haye looked the far better boxer, while Valuev was the one trying to make a fight.

Haye looked extremely impressive in the opening few rounds, hitting his opponent when given the chance and making him miss frequently. The middle rounds though were very hard to score. Valuev was on the attack but missed a lot, while Haye just seemed content in making him miss.

In the Later rounds Haye seemed to realize he needed to do more and upped his work rate to good effect, rocking Valuev for the first time in his career in the final round. By the time the final bell rang I feared Haye had followed his game plan a little too well and had not been aggressive enough to land victory.

Haye won a majority victory by 114-114 116-112 116-112 and became Britons first heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis.

Catch my full rundown of the fight in Mondays ‘Here Comes the Payne'.

Haye will get a bigger payday when he gets his ass handed to him on a plate by the Klitschko brothers. Smart gameplan making people think Valuev was a big task just because of his size. Valuev was just collateral.

It's still quite a task defeating a man 100 pounds heavier then you. Sure, he was faster, a better boxer, and had a gameplan, but one screw up and he could have gotten hit with enough force to do permanent damage. Good job Haye!

Awesome!!! I really don't care what anyone says, it's great that Haye is the new champion and that boring sidefreak, Valuev...Time to fight the Klitschko's!

He also did it with a broken hand and a few other injuries they only revealed after the fight.

Firstly, now that he holds a title, Haye can negiotiate better terms with either of the Klitchkos. The Klitchkos offer notoriously low paid and controlling prize contracts for their fights. Makes beating Valuev far more than collateral.
Secondly, Wlad ain't much. He's the second best amongst a poor crop of heavys. Vitali is/was quality enough to be considered a good fighter. Haye could well beat Wlad. If he loses it'll be the fact that even the best 220 lb and under fighter can't handle a decent genuine big man.
If you go back to only the 90's there would have been at least 5 fighters that would have thrashed Wlad and another 5-10 where it could have gone either way.

Haye should give David Tua a title fight. Need a heavyweight that knocks people out.

Before Haye, I'd say Wlad is the best puncher in the division however he has absolutely NO confidence in his own chin and is scared of fighting toe-to-toe. Klitschko's deals usually involve an 85-15 split, rematch clauses if Klitschko loses and then mandatory defences against the other brother and if a klitschko loses, a rematch.

I was really psyched up for Haye-Klitshko in June as it would have been Haye KlitshK.O. in 6 rounds. After he has his mandatory against Ruiz - he'll get a decent fight against Wlad - then batter Vitali (whos body is now completely shot).

Thats the plan anyway!
