Haye The Conquering Hero

David Haye presented with his title belt at Golden Boy luncheon Saturday.

According to Oscar De La Hoya, there's a new national hero to add to the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

"Now, we have a fighter in David Haye embraced by England and the world," the owner of Golden Boy Promotions announced at a luncheon at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino Saturday. "What sets him apart in the heavyweight division is his will and readiness to fight and to punch."

As for David Haye, apparently England is not enough. "I want to be the people's champion," he said upon receiving his title belt. "I want to be a source of pride. Most heavyweight champions are busy stuffing their face with donuts. I'm an athlete first."

Apparently Haye is enamored with Vegas too. "I will be coming back to Las Vegas to fight here," he said with a smile.

De La Hoya said Haye will face mandatory challenger John Ruiz, then target the Klitschkos.

Said De La Hoya, Haye is "a breath of fresh air in the heavyweight division."

"He beat the giant!" De La Hoya exclaimed. "Just like I beat Shaq, he beat Valuev. David beat the giant."
