411mania.com spoke earlier today with Dr. Jeffrey Roth, who saw Manny Pacquiao after his win over Miguel Cotto on Saturday. Most of you probably noticed that his ear was pretty swollen during the post-fight interview and at the press conference following the fight, boxing's pound for pound champ showed up with a full bandage around his head and right ear.
In speaking to Dr. Roth, he followed up with us regarding the need to drain some fluid from Pacquiao's ear. "He had a fluid collection in the area between the skin and the cartilage of his right ear. It was drained. On routine follow up the next day, there was more fluid. This was drained as well. This hematoma of the ear is common in fighters. If it is not drained, it can scar in and form a cauliflower ear," said Dr. Roth.
He also explained that the bleeding can "come from vessels between the skin and cartilage" and that it is something that can occur during a fight, or even training.
According to Dr. Roth, the ear should be fine and we can expect Pacquiao to recover well.
With the 12th round TKO of Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao now holds the WBO welterweight title to go along with his RING junior welterweight championship. Preliminary talks for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. are currently under way.
Wow I learned something, I didn't know about that I just thought the ears came with the years, you would ufc fighters would do the same or any professional that has some type of relevant money
