Mayol Wants to Unify the Jr. Flyweight Division
Posted by FJ Parlan on 11.29.2009

In an interview with local newspaper the Philippine Star, Philippines' new world titlist Rodel Mayol said that he wants to unify titles in the 108-lb. division, and that he wants to begin with a showdown against WBA titlist Giovanni Segura.

It should be noted that the Segura (22-1-1, 18 KOs), the Guerrero, Mexico native, defended his title on the same day, against another Filipino (Sonny Boy Jaro) that Mayol (26-4-1, 20 KOs) won his first world title after four unsuccessful tries in the past.

"I've sparred with Segura before and I know I can beat him," Mayol said in the interview.

Down the road, the Los Angeles-based fighter wishes to unify the titles further, but he would not want a fight with fellow Filipino world titlist Brian Viloria, and is unsure if Ivan Calderon, who he challenged twice in the past, still wants to face him.

Mayol won the WBC light flyweight title from Edgar Sosa, knocking him out in round 2 after a clash of heads in the same round that surely played a factor in the fight. Viloria is the IBF titlist, Segura is the WBA titlist, while Calderon holds the WBO title as well as The Ring Jr. Flyweight championship, considered as the legitimate world championship.

It is safe to say that it would be a difficult task to do just what Mayol desires.

The first of these tasks came against an opponent whom Mayol admitted was out of condition, due to confusions in the weigh-in. Sosa has suggested before the fight that he plans to move up to the 112-lb. division, and he may be having troubles making the weight.

Sosa can now move up to Flyweight, or he can demand a rematch. Mayol is ready either way, but is celebrating for now.

Mayol dedicates the win to his grandparents, to the Filipino fans, and to Manny Pacquiao.

"I owe this title to Manny," said Mayol. "He gave me this break. He didn't give up on me. It was my fifth attempt to win a world title and I finally did it."

Filipino fans are hoping it would not take as long for him to realize his dream of unifying the division.

Rodel Mayol should be banned from boxing. He cheated again. With stupid headbutts. They should strip him of the title.

I'd like to think Filipino fans are also hoping he doesn't have to blatently headbutt his next opponent to win as well.

Giovanni Segura is dangerous opponent, judging by the way he bested Sonny Boy Jaro in only one round. Therefore, Mayol should just first defend his title against someone ranked below him before considering unification.

first of all, it is not mayol who headbutted calderon on their previous 2 fights. and sosa realized he had no chance winning of mayol so he found an excuse for it....

Rodel Mayol is a classy fighter he should defend the title first in the Philippines, against ulyses solis. then fight segura. . . or the japanese champ. ivan calderon is a runner he is boring, he should retire!

I've seen the fight 1st round: it is clear mayol is stronger and have landed a clear power punch & beside sosa was clear he's dehydrated the headbuutt was accidental sosa trying to avoid the body punches inflicted by mayol, NO MORE EXCUSES sosa has all the right to challenge mayol for a rematch EXCUSES IS REALLY BAD FOR A BOXER
