Oscar loves his boxing, but he digs soccer too.
Oscar De La Hoya has officially accepted an invitation to join the USA Bid Committee in an effort to bring either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup to the United States.
What does De La Hoya have to do with soccer you ask? Well Oscar loves soccer too and is actually the part-owner of the Houston Dynamo MLS team.
"Thanks to boxing, I've experienced first-hand how sports can promote tolerance, equality, and social integration while allowing people to realize their biggest dreams," said De La Hoya. "Boxing provided me the opportunity to travel the world and through those travels I can attest to the worldwide popularity of football and its power to be a positive force for social change. Being able to join the USA Bid Committee in our mission to bring the World Cup back to the U.S. is an honor."
In case you're wondering, Australia, England, Japan and Russia have also declared their intent to submit proposals to FIFA for hosting the World Cup.
This year's tournament, which takes place in South Africa, kicks off in June. The US last hosted the Cup in 1994.
