On Tuesday afternoon, Yuriorkis Gamboa took part in a media day workout at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas, in lieu of his Sep. 11 clash with Orlando Solido.
"This is a very important fight because this is an opportunity to prove that I can defeat the champions in this division," said Gamboa.
"I have worked very hard to become a better professional fighter and I think that it has shown over the last few fights. My defense is better and I am putting my combinations together much better.
Gamboa also shared his thoughts on Solido, who he feels is good but not of the same caliber as himself.
"He a very good fighter with a lot of professional experience, but he is not really at my level. My speed and power will be too much for him."
"I know I need to work very hard to get to the level that I want to be at. I want to one day be considered one of the best fighters not only in the world but of all time," Gamboa added.
Of course the one fight everyone's talking about is the potential unification bout with fellow Top Rank stablemate Juan Manuel Lopez who is set to take on Rafael Marquez later this year. It's a fight Bob Arum has been letting simmer while both fighters continue to win and build towards that fight.
"It is a fight that is out there and when Top Rank feels that he is ready to face me he will face me. In the mean time all I have to do is beat who ever they put in front of me," continued the unbeaten Cuban.
Still, Gamboa isn't looking past Salido who presents an important fight for him in the division.
"It's a big opportunity for me and I want to give the fans a great fight. It's important to give the fans the best fight possible and this is what I intend to do on Saturday night."
