The Gamer Girlfriend 04.16.09: Halo 3
Posted by Greg Bruno on 04.16.2009
This month we're playing some game called "Halo 3". Ever heard of it? Check out Andi's impressions of one of the Xbox 360's biggest games!
Superman has kryptonite.
Werewolves have silver bullets.
Vampires have sunlight. I'm talking real vampires, none of that Twilight bullshit.
Greg Bruno has Halo 3.
Developed by Bungie, Halo 3 has become one of the fastest selling games of all time. This final chapter gives the fans everything they wanted and more. From all the new weapons and vehicles, to The Forge and theater mode; Halo 3 delivers. However, nothing says success like watching the Halo community rack up ten billion covenant kills. Yea. I said Ten Billion.
So sure, Halo 3 is a huge game. It's got a fantastic campaign and an enormous multiplayer community. But will a girl like it? When it came to decide on a game for this edition of Gamer Girlfriend I finally brought up playing Halo 3 . We went through Halo: Combat Evolved together and Andi seemed to be getting used to the whole "use-two-thumb sticks-to-move" idea. So the next logical step was to play Halo 2. Well, we didn't. We played this instead. Andi never seemed all that into the story line of the Halo universe, but rather the "What can I kill?" areas instead.
Also, Halo 3 is my all time most favorite game. This system seller of a game was bound to become a part of Gamer Girlfriend history at some point or another.
So once again, I'd like to thank Andi for taking time out of her busy schedule to play some Halo 3 with me. We decided to play just a little bit of the campaign before jumping into some multiplayer action. We also had another couple come over and get in on the action (that sounds dirty). So thanks to Chris and Margie for helping us kill some opposition, as well.
This is Andi in real life. IRL, as it's known to some.
And this is Andi in Halo 3!
Just by looking at the cover of this game, what do you think it is about?
Andi: Considering I played Halo; I think it's safe to say that this game is a continuation on the story from the first and second one.
What do you think of the graphics in this game?
Andi: We kind of skipped over Halo 2, so I guess I missed the full progression of the graphics. However, the graphics in Halo 3 are a huge improvement and are really impressive. Everything looks incredibly real. The scenery is gorgeous. The maps are all so different and unique. It's very detailed, and very awesome.
What do you think of the voice work and sound in this game?
Andi: Greg and I played a little of the campaign, but for the most part we focused on the multiplayer for this one. During the first level the voice work seemed great. Especially Master Chief; his mouth is just so perfectly synched with his voice. ;-) Sound effects are good. I gotta say- I love the sounds of all the exploding and shooting. Especially when you're playing snipers and you think you're well hidden and all of the sudden… BAM dead. Ha ha I actually jumped a few times during that one.
Cortana's got nothin' on Andi J! And for those wondering, you bet your ass I bought the Legendary Edition!
Do you think the typical non-gamer girlfriend would enjoy this game?
Andi: Hmmm. This is a toughie. We didn't play though the whole game so I can't really give my opinion on that. Although if she's played through the other games I'm sure a girl would be much more open to playing Halo 3. I know I wasn't as afraid of playing through the campaign this time because I was comfortable with the controls and felt I had gained at least a little skill. Although we still might need a little coaching. Greg kind of assumed I remembered everything from playing 6 months ago and I did not. Your tutorial was a little lacking this time, babe. The multiplayer was a blast. I think that if a girl is open minded and patient enough to give it a shot, it could be a really fun experience.
And is on the ledge while I am jumping. Notice my rocket trajectory as opposed to hers. Guess who died?
What would be a good way for a boyfriend to get his girlfriend into this game, if at all?
Andi: Again guys- I cannot stress enough the importance of guiding your girlfriend through all the controls and making her feel comfortable. Spend some time in a map, just the two of you, and help her get used to everything. Show her what the guns can do, how to pick them up, how to reload, and allll that necessary stuff. Things that might seem common sense to you are NOT to her. And if she gets frustrated- she's going to want to quit. So take your time. And make it fun. And when she's done spinning in circles and finally finds you on the map, shake your ass a little (crouch up and down). I know it made my day!
I also HIGHLY recommend finding another couple to play with. Girls feel soooo much more comfortable with that stuff when another girl is around for moral support. We played multi-player with our friends Chris and Margie and it was a riot. Margie and I met up on the maps and had dance parties while the boys were off killing bad guys. One game we all really enjoyed was Zombies. It was fun to team up and help each other out. It sucked for the girl who started out as a zombie first, but hey, still a good time.
Final Girlfriend Approval Rating:
Score is for multi-player
Andi:
Ok, so we broke out in dace parties every once in a while and yes, we were discussing the latest issue of Cosmo Magazine in between rounds; but we were also sitting in a smelly basement on an uncomfortable couch playing video games for literally hours. So take it easy on us boys. Appreciate our efforts and don't get too hung up on how "into the game" we are just yet. We're making the effort and that says a lot about how much we love you and want to enjoy the things you do.
Now let's go to the mall for a few hours and you can hold our purses while we try stuff on ;-)
Urk, Greg wanted me to say "I can haz recon plz?"
Check out our game history to see the breakdown of our games together! All the games from April 14 are those for Gamer Girlfriend. Andi was Burger Nog (G) with the smiley face icon.
A new feature we'd like to share with you all is that we'll be playing Halo 3 together on Xbox Live on Tuesday, April 7 at 7pm Central time. Andi and I will be on for about 2 hours, so if you and your significant other would care to join us online, let's party up! Send a friend request to BURGER NOG (can you figure out why I chose that name?) with a message of "411 GG" and we'll send reminders to you!
Oh, and Bungie, sadly Andi does not have her own gamer tag…any ideas on a name?
That'll do it for this edition of The Gamer Girlfriend. Thanks for reading and we hope to see you online next week! Get those invites to us and please share your thoughts below!

Greg, I'm impressed. You managed to convince Andi that you were 'dancing' when you ducked down and stood back up...
Not tea bagging her.

Some parts of this make it sound like you're trying to get your girlfriend to relax and get into anal. Not really feedback, just something I noticed.
Personally I think any Halo game is a pain in the ass to get into mostly because 98% of the guys who play this are psychotic about it (no offense Greg).
But then again, you're talking to someone who would rather play Lego Batman with her nephew...so that shows you how important my input is. =]
All in all great article, as always, well written.

Interestingly enough, even among gamer girls I think it differs (just like from guy to guy). My girlfriend who plays WoW, Unreal Tournament, Rockband and a bunch of other games can not stand Halo or Call of Duty for that matter. But one of our mutual best friends who is also a chick absolutely loves Halo (and many other FPS games too). It just depends, but the best way to get any spouse into something you love is to take your time with it and show them the ropes so to speak. More importantly, it is also wise to get into something they love too. Hence why I play WoW and I cook with my g/f. Those are two of the things she loves most and I can always suggest she try something I like and more often than not she gives it a try.

"Everything looks incredibly real."
Can't agree with that. I always thought Halo had a slightly less than realistic look to it. I'm not saying the game isn't beautifully done, it's just seems more animated feature than live action to me, if that makes any sense.

My wife wouldn't touch Halo with a 10 foot pole. She can play, she just finds the story line uninteresting and the multiplayer to repetitive to be fun. I've tried, and I've found that a lot of females are in the same mindset. However I've tried, it just doesn't work. And you know what, that's ok. I'm able to say to my wife, headed over to play Halo, and she doesn't even ask another question. It truly is the Kryptonite to my wife's interests.

You gotta come up with something that lets everyone on LIVE know you're a chick. That way, they can apply ample amounts of the requisite misogyny.

Or you could just make an anagram out of your real name. Whatever works.

Ive attempted to have my gf play halo with me. she played once and forgot the controls the very next day lol but she seemed to enjoy it... she claims she enjoyes watching me play but i would really like her to actually become involved in it so i dont feel like im spending too much time with the game and not with her. but I often stop and cuddle with her inbetween matches.

My girlfriend (soon to be ex-) won't even hold a 360 controller when the game is on. She'll play Xbox Live Arcade Uno, though.

My GF is really into Zack & Wiki, Elite Beat Agents, Rhythm Heaven, and Tetris DS. The 360 and PS3 controllers confuse her, but I'm trying to ease her into Resident Evil 5.
