411 Games Fact or Fiction 05.25.09: Sony at E3, Kojima, Metroid Prime Trilogy
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 05.25.2009

1. You weren't shocked that Kojima's announcement would be another announcement.

Trace Aber: FICTION - There's a difference between a slow-build and just building while you figure out what you're actually trying to accomplish. It would seem like Kojima is doing the latter, but I'm hoping that I'm wrong. I mean, he has a history of making us wait, which leads to everyone guessing what it is and anticipating it like he was about to announce the meaning of life (which, I assume for some people, may apply). The only problem with this is that for each day that passes and each "announcement" that leads up to the actual announcement more and more people will get tired of waiting and begin to doubt that it's even worth the wait. Luckily, if history is any indication, this announcement that was announced through another announcement will lead into something that is an actual announcement and not just a preview of an announcement. I think that makes sense. Anyways, yeah, wasn't too shocked.

Adam Larck: FACT - Kojima's announcements upon announcements really doesn't come as a surprise anymore. They seem to love to just build and build and build then do a quick announcement before disappearing for a while. I wish they would really stop with this, as I become bored and slightly annoyed by this building. I'd much rather just get the actual announcement than all of this stuff. However, with E3 just around the corner, I wasn't surprised one bit by this.

Score: 0 for 1

2. Three Metroid Primes on one disc is an epic win.

Trace Aber: FICTION - First off, I do not believe in the ideas of winning or failing on an epic scale anymore, mostly because the term "epic" has become about as played out as "extreme." That being said, this is probably FACT for most gamers, but personally I just never got into the Metroid series. This would kind of be like owning those 3-in-1 Bible games that were so popular on the SNES, except this time the games won't actually be bad and therefore not fun in the ironic sense of the way. I just won't be enjoying myself.

Adam Larck: FACT - While I agree with Trace's thoughts about the word epic, that isn't what's being talked about here. What's being talked about here is a 3-in-1 of Metroid Prime games, which I think is a great idea. I became a big fan of the Metroid series after playing Super Metroid on the SNES, and still have all three Primes for the Gamecube and Wii. This is a great chance for Metroid fans that may have passed over one of the first games, like I did with Echoes originally, to try them with new graphics and Corruption controls.

Score: 0 for 2

3. At least one new piece of hardware will be revealed at E3.

Trace Aber: FACT - Depends on what type of hardware you mean. I don't expect any new consoles to be announced, but I do expect a couple peripherals here and there, and possibly one that claims to be industry-changing, revolutionary, you know - all that jazz. Maybe they'll finally release an updated version of the Power Glove. Hey, a man can dream, right?

Adam Larck: FACT - But please let it not be a Power Glove. We may see the rumored motion censored PS3 or 360 controllers, or we may see the new PSP. As far as a brand new system, though, I do not see that happening. The current generation systems still have at least a few more years in them. As far as accessories, though, why not? We can never have enough accessories. Look at all the plastic instruments now out, or all of the Wii add-ons that are out there.

Score: 1 for 3

TIME TO SWITCH IT UP

4. Now as the underdog, you expect Sony to go all out at their E3 press conference.

Adam Larck: FICTION - While I think that they definitely need to go all out, I don't think that they will. By going all out, I have to include a price drop as something major Sony would have to do and I still don't see that happening. I know they have some big name games to talk about, like God of War III and MAG, and maybe even a PSP 2 announcement, but unless you see a price drop announcement I still can't consider it going all out for the company.

Trace Aber: FICTION - I have to agree with Mr. Larck here - short of a price drop nothing Sony can do will give them the smallest glimmer of hope that they won't be the underdog. It's not that the PS3 is a terrible system (though I still find Xbox superior), it's just that the system isn't worth the money. They don't have the exclusive titles like they used to and they don't have enough games to warrant the price. Sadly, I don't think Sony will be announcing a price drop, and, thus, they wont' be going out in the slightest, much less all out.

Score: 2 for 4

5. You think Super Mario RPG 2 is ridiculously overdue.

Adam Larck: FACT - A hundred times over, fact. I loved this game on the Super NES (and can't believe I forgot to included it in my Top 5 list last week ... can I request a do over?). Seeing some of the old characters like Geno and Mallow would be great, along with just the continuation of the series. But, if we still can't get an Earthbound 2/Mother 3 release here, don't hold your breath for a Super Mario RPG 2 title.

Trace Aber: FACT - There is no reason for this game not to have been made and into the fourth title in the series. I don't know a single person who didn't play the first one and enjoy it, regardless if they liked Mario, RPGs, or either one of them. It was a great game that deserves a sequel, or even a remake (though short of HD graphics, not sure what else they would do). In fact, just typing this short paragraph on the original, I'm going to start playing it again - only to further emphasis the fact that I really wish they'd make a sequel.

Score: 3 for 5

6. The swine flu has forced Capcom to remove Dead Rising 2 from E3, due to the developers unable to make the trip to Japan. This may happen to another title before the show begins.

Adam Larck: FICTION - I really hated to see Dead Rising 2 removed from this, but Capcom does have a bit of a history of doing things like this. I don't see any other developers doing this. After all, E3 is still a great setting for getting new titles out to the public and hyping them up. I think all other developers that have announced they are going will be there. It's just disappointing that Dead Rising 2 won't be shown because of the scare over the flu right now.

Trace Aber: FICTION - I hate that this is happening. Dead Rising 2 is one game that I am highly anticipating and I'm extremely disappointed this is even happening. I understand where Capcom is coming from to a degree, but I think they're missing out on a great business opportunity by missing out on E3, and most importantly disappointing their fans. I'm hoping that they'll do something to rectify the situation, but we'll have to wait and see how that goes. Thankfully, I don't think any other developers will be missing out due to the swine flu (or whatever we're calling it now), but never say never I suppose.

Final Score: 4 for 6 - Well they started out on the opposite sides of the fence but when it was all said and done, both guys seemed to share similar views.

Now it's time for you guys to give us your take. Fact or Fiction? You decide!

Sony is having a pretty good year (software...not saleswise, I haven't checked the numbers) so far, so they would be pretty dumb to come to E3 and give another horrible showing...but knowing Sony...

I'm really hoping we see the PSP2. That would be cool. Really disapponting that Dead Rising is missing though, I love survival-horror games.

What does Sony really have left to show for this year? That's the downside of showing stuff off a year or more before it hits. There's really no "SURPRISE" value left to showing off something like MAG or God of War III - we've already seen them. A price drop would help sales, but would that really be interesting to any of us who already have a PS3?

What Drew said. However, these fuckers need to get a clue and drop those prices. They've got the superior system, it's time they show and allow gamers to see why.
