411 Games Fact or Fiction 6.29.09: Modern Warfare 2, Mortal Kombat, Wii Sports Resort, Uncharted 2
Posted by Drew Robbins on 06.29.2009
Are you looking forward to Wii Sports Resort? Was The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past for the SNES the best Zelda game ever? Did Laurence Kasanoff, the producer of the Mortal Kombat movies, make the franchise what it is today? Was Uncharted 2 really the big winner at E3? 411’s Todd Vote and Ramon Aranda discuss these topics and more in the latest edition of 411 Fact or Fiction: Games!
Hello and welcome to this week's exciting, action-packed, pullitzer-nominated edition of 411 Games Fact or Fiction. This is your host Drew Robbins, 411's resident "Greatest Man Alive," and People Magazine's winner for "Best Person Ever."
For my weekly plug, I'm going to plug people who don't "rage quit" in UFC Undisputed 2009. Off of the top of my head, I can't think of anything in a game that has angered me as much as the people in UFC who just turn their system off when they lose an online match. I was so happy to win a match by submission online, but then BAM, with one flip of the switch my victory is erased and I don't gain any experience for defeating them.
I'd also like to plug ending someone's 11-fight winning streak. I only plug this because that was awesome. Gained at least 7 levels off of that bad boy!
With that out of the way, let's meet our contenders!
Todd Vote - As I've stated before in my legendary, ten week run with 3PC, Todd Vote is our own little Rocky story. However, I've since changed my tune, because I decided that a Rocky analogy was perhaps too cool for Mr. Vote. Now, he is just the "Little Commenter Who Could." This little engine puts together Top 5, a weekly reminder of how Drew Robbins has a better opinion than anyone else on the staff.
Ramon Aranda - Well if isn't my boss, Ramon. In the depths of despair, Ramon placed Fact or Fiction on my doorstep as if it was an orphaned child. Now without Fact or Fiction Ramon has turned his eye towards a new column, the Editor's Corner, in which he referred to me as a woman. Now I'm just going to go cry in my bedroom and gorge on ice cream…
1.) The Games Critics have come to a consensus, and that consensus is that Uncharted 2 was the big winner of E3, taking the awards for "Best of Show," "Best Action/Adventure Game" and "Best Console Game>." This was the right choice.
Todd Vote: FICTION-ish - While I have absolutely no problem with Uncharted 2 taking all of these awards, because it really does look like an amazing game. Drake's new adventure looks to be one of the best on the PS3 thus far. However that said, there is an action/adventure game that I think deserves a lot more praise than it has received coming out of E3. This may just be the fan in me talking, but I thought God of War 3 looked jaw-dropping amazing as well, so it would have been a very close call to me, at least on the action adventure category. Kratos looks better than ever, and it could be argued that it was the better looking of the two games. So I guess my final answer would be 1/3 Fact, 2/3 Fiction.
Ramon Aranda: FICTION - I'm going to agree with you partially Todd and say fiction. I thought Uncharted looked amazing and was clearly the best PS3 game on the floor but I was a bit more impressed with what I saw from Mass Effect 2. That doesn't mean I'm not going to play the hell out of Uncharted 2 when it releases but I was left with more of a mouth-watering impression with ME2.
Score: 1 for 1 I would have said fact but, I have to agree, ME2 looks awesome. Now I just need to get around to playing the first…
2.) Recently, a box surfaced on eBay containing not one, not two…but SIX factory-sealed copies of The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past for the SNES. They couldn't have made a better choice, because this was the best Zelda game of all.
Todd Vote: FICTION - Now it is entirely possible that I am missing something here, why would anybody want to buy a six game box set when all six games are the same? Am I missing something? Are video games starting to be recognised as serious collectables? Anyways that wasn't the question. This guy could have made a much better choice, it appears he sold the lot of six for a paltry 145 euro, which is about $200 American. The game in question may in fact be the best Legend of Zelda game out there, but this guy still could have made a better choice in selling them off. How long before we see six seperate mint condition un-opened copies featured in Ebay auctions?
Ramon Aranda: FICTION - Best SNES game? Yes. Best Zelda game?, Sorry but no. That distinction goes to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'd even rank Twilight Princess above LTTP which I thoroughly enjoyed. As for trying to sell them - I sincerely hope he's trying to sell then individually as opposed to all together. I mean, who the hell wants six copies? Too bad he doesn't have some copies of Ocarina of Time, with their special edition box!
Score: 2 for 2…but -10 cool points to both competitors for not even mentioning Majora's Mask!
3.) You are actually looking forward to Wii Sports Resort.
Todd Vote: FICTION - If I only had a Wii. Don't get me wrong, I do have access to a Wii, and I have played Wii Sports. It is fun, especially in a group setting. There are different events in Wii Sports Resort, and some of them look fun, but ultimately it is a way to cash in on a franchises name value, and get Wii Motion Plus into the hands of gamers, which is honestly the more exciting of the two. Give me Motion Plus, and a new Red Steel game that can show it off sword fighting style.
Ramon Aranda: FACT - I played the game at E3 and it was fun. If a game is fun, then dammit, I'm looking forward to its release. Why else would you play a game? Todd, if you can play a Wii, then you should really give it a shot because it's quite enjoyable, especially with a group of friends as usual. A cash-in? I'd say no my friend. People wanted a sequel and Nintendo is giving them one so there you go. As for the side note on Red Steel 2, I played that too with Motion Plus and mee-likes! Expect a preview soon.
Score: 2 for 3
Switch!
4.) Laurence Kasanoff, the producer of the hilariously bad, yet still awesome, Mortal Kombat Movies, is suing Midway over the rights to Mortal Kombat. That's ridiculous, but the BEST part is that he claims he made Mortal Kombat the brand it is today. This is the most outlandish thing you have ever heard.
Ramon Aranda: FACT - Umm listen up Kasanoff...you were tapped to make the movies because the franchise was already pretty damn big. That was the point of making the movie. Seriously, this lawsuit is absolutely ridiculous and I guarantee you it will go nowhere. Kasanoff should be ashamed of himself!
Todd Vote: FACT - 100% fact. It's one thing for him to have the stones to sue Midway over MK, but to do so on the grounds that he practically made the series is preposterous. I agree with Ramon, the lawsuit will go nowhere. How could it? The guy hasn't got a leg to stand on. If he retains any rights to the franchise after this lawsuit, then I will have lost faith in our judicial system.
Score: 3 for 4. I'd also like to throw in, as a connoisseur of bad movies, I actually prefer the movies.
5.) Dropping the Call of Duty name from Modern Warfare 2 will end up in a decrease in sales.
Ramon Aranda: FICTION - I've heard this over and over this past week and I think it's stupid. Gamers know MW2 is the sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. If you have no clue and you're looking to buy the game then you're just ignorant. If you've seen the screens or videos then you're in the know.
Todd Vote: FICTION - If it comes to it and Infinity Ward feels it is not being recognized as a sequel, or they feel it will be hurt without the COD name, they will simply add it back. To me I think that the drop of Call of Duty is a good thing for Infinity Ward, many gamers feel that Treyarch make an inferior version of the game, so if Infinity Ward stands to benefit from branching out. If nothing else, if this becomes a problem, expect to see the advertising mark the game as a sequel to Call of Duty 4. Problem solved.
Score: 4 for 5
6.) Nobody would care about the Conduit if it were on the PS3 or 360.
Ramon Aranda: FACT - I hate to say it but it's true. I've been playing the game for our review and I'm really enjoying it while the multiplayer is pretty solid. However, on the 360 for instance there is much better competition both in terms of depth and pure fun factor. I will say though that it controls extremely well with the Wii remote and is very enjoyable - I recommend it to any Wii owner but it probably wouldn't have been an big deal on a different console.
Todd Vote: FACT - But with a modifyer. It could very well stand to reason that a game that could start as The Conduit, would become something completely different on the PS3, or the 360. Granted the competition on the bigger consoles is a bit stiffer, and that would make it hard for The Conduit to get noticed, but like I said it might not have become the same game if it had been developed for the 360, or PS3.
Score: 5 for 6
Until next time…
Our competitors finish off with a respectable, but mildly frustrating, 5 out of 6. Where is all of the disagreement and hatred in the 411 Games staff? As much as it pains me to say, we could really use that Mark Salmela fellow, minus Shaqy, who I believe was just traded to the Cavs by Mark in exchange for 10 tacos and Zyundrias Illgauskus.
And with that, I bid you adieu. Next week, two more writers are thrown into a vicious blood bath, and I promise that I will make the deadline too. As a side note, might not be able to post the article myself as I'll be off in the exotic wilderness of…Arkansas celebrating the fourth of July. I will still moderate and make witty commentary, hopefully. At the very least…I'll write the intros.
I thought I got a good deal on those tacos, but then I realized it was Taco Tuesday at Taco Johns. 59 cent tacos. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
But if that's a challenge then be prepared to get a hot steaming rod of justice up your virgin... well you probably know where I'm going with this, even though I have no idea where I'm going with this.

Considering the best of E3 awards, I think Ramon has a serious hard on for ME2. Hopefully, that game doesn't have the same bug present as the first game. I'm going to get both games, but I'm more excited for Uncharted 2. I bet good money that Ramon is going to review ME2. X-D

Hey thanks Stronelis.

is it just me, or is that statement made all that much more disturbing due to the email from Mark about his "audition" offers?

The fuck you talking about? The first Mortal Kombat movie was not a bad movie at all. in fact its the best Video game to movie adaptation ever.
Posted By: Guest#8979 (Guest) on June 29, 2009 at 12:02 PM
I agree with 8979....
However, I thought Annihilation was horrid. They used a damn powerball from the original American Gladiators!!!! That was cheap as hell. The first one rocked!

"Hopefully, that game doesn't have the same bug present as the first game."
What bug did the first game have?
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on June 29, 2009 at 12:53 PM
Chris Casamassa is f***ing Scorpion. Man, the original movie kicked sooooo much ass.
Posted By: Guest#9160 (Guest) on June 29, 2009 at 12:55 PM
Yes the first movie isn't terrible, and should be a role-model for future video game movie adaptions...but that just speaks to how bad game movies are.
Posted By: Drew Robbins (Registered) on June 29, 2009 at 02:31 PM
Rod, what are you referring to? I can't find any mention of a first games bugs above.
Posted By: Todd Vote (Registered) on June 29, 2009 at 02:53 PM
OKAYYYY...I meant the unpolished loading/elevator sections. How about the overall feel to the combat? And the little graphical glitches here and there. Does that satisfy you? Are you happy?
Posted By: David (Guest) on June 29, 2009 at 03:09 PM
Dave, I want to see you nitpick a good PS3 exclusive. Come on, any game that is "AAA" and exclusive to PS3.
Posted By: Drew Robbins (Registered) on June 29, 2009 at 04:24 PM
I disagree, Zelda games aren't all that great.
Posted By: Guest#3705 (Guest) on June 29, 2009 at 04:52 PM
never mind, you weren't talking about the column. LOL
Posted By: Todd Vote (Registered) on June 29, 2009 at 04:54 PM
Nitpick a good AAA PS3 exclusive?
Ummm....Metal Gear Solid 4 has insanely long install times between chapters. It also doesn't help that it is a AAA game without trophies. Hell, Disgaea 3 is getting trophies! What the **** is wrong with your Konami?
LittleBigPlanet--The controls are wayyyyyyy to floaty for my enjoyment. It feels too loose. The creation tools seem very basic. To create custom ground, it has to be very basic. It cannot be super-detailed like the areas pre-created by Media Molecule.
Uncharted--Ummm...it just felt like another Tomb Raider clone. The animation was excellent, but it was still a Tomb Raider clone.
inFamous--Ummmm...the inconsistency that comes with touching metal objects. You can touch some, but you can interact with fences. Ummm...the story isn't very different if you are good or bad. Also, good seems a little more powerful than bad (the grenade comes to mind).
Resistance 2--The story took a bad seat. Now, it feels like another generic FPS.
Killzone 2---Ummm...the problems of loading during cutscenes? The story isn't that exciting. You do not see a lot of different enemy types.
Ummm...those are the ones that I can name off the top of my head. Happy?
Posted By: David (Guest) on June 29, 2009 at 06:54 PM
Happy? No...intrigued though. The way you painted those statement made it seem like you hate or are pretty apathetic towards most of those games. I'm also surprised you didn't nitpick Disgaea 3, an exclusive which is much in need of nitpicking.

Only the third thing you mentioned was a bug. The first was just a bad design choice, and the second is wrong in my opininon. There were a couple of graphical glitches here and there but nothing gamebreaking.
Posted By: Justin (Guest) on June 29, 2009 at 09:19 PM
Gamers Ignorant? NEVER!
Posted By: Guest#7004 (Guest) on June 29, 2009 at 10:55 PM
The way I painted those statements make it seem like I hated those games? Nope. Hell, MGS4 is one of my favorite games of all time. Also, why would I nitpick Disgaea 3? Because the graphics are sprites? That is more of an artistic choice then anything, I think (don't quote me on that). I can state they release a crapload of DLC for the game. People like to talk about the federal government nickle and diming you with "tax increases," but Nippon Ichi really nickle and dimes you on little additions. Just look at all the flipping useless characters that are released for the game? They add nothing to the story...they are just characters silent set pieces.
I can't really think of more to be critical about that game. Why the heck would I be overly critical for a SRPG? Hell, I own Digaea 1, 2, 3, Afternoon of Darkness, FFT, Front Mission 4, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Growlanswers Generations, and La Pucelle Tactics. I'm going to buy Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days when it is released this fall. However, Disgaea 3 is a niche game. Actually, it is a niche within a niche, and you wanted AAA PS3 games. That would automatically disqualify ANY SRPGs.
Posted By: David (Guest) on June 30, 2009 at 04:03 AM
Fair enough...I actually only said "AAA" to make sure you would avoid some of the flopped exclusives like Lair and Haze. It was just a precaution.
