B3yond the Report 07.14.09
Posted by Mark Salmela on 07.14.2009
On this relatively slow news week we take a look at ways Sony can strengthen the PlayStation 3. How about including PS1 and PS2 games installed onto every new PS3? How about every PlayStation 3 coming with all 4 Metal Gear Solid games? Also, news on Battle Fantasia coming to PSN, NCAA Football 10, Mod Nation Racers, Uncharted 2, Battlefield 1943, and more.
Hi this is Vince from B3yond the Report. Tired of playing boring games? Tired of playing unwanted and un-fun garbage games?
I mean look at this crappy game. Who the hell would want to play such an abortion?
That's why I'm here today with the latest video game craze, B3yond the Report: The Game!
Traverse over 40 levels as your favorite video game character ever, Shaq!
Fight a wide variety of enemies, including Ron Paul, Oprah, Bruno, that lesbo bitch Ellen, the hooker who bit my tongue off, Armando Rodriguez, the guys who were formerly known as Gamecock, the remaining members of the 80's band Winger, the guy who keeps cancelling Futurama, and more!
Explore dangerous caverns, traverse epic landscapes, have random and immature sex-based mini-games, punch Kobe in the face, help Shaq cash his checks for being in this video game, and more!
You getting this reporter asshole? That's over 8 hours of gameplay and over 40 levels in this PlayStation 2 classic. That's right, exclusive to the PlayStation 2 system. Coming this fall for a budget price of $19.99 you too can become a proud owner of B3yond the Report: The Game.
Woah Woah Woah there Vincent. If we're going to make B3yond the Report: The Game staring yours truly, we're gonna have to make some changes.
That's more like it. Now that's what I call Game of the Year. Why would you want to shoot Iraqi's as a military soldier in Call of Duty when you could kill Iraqi's as the big Shaqalier himself?
Buy our game. Now on with the less important news.
Not one of the many bosses in the game, it's B3yond the News of the Week~!
Battle Fantasia coming to the PSN
Arc System Work's Battle Fantasia is finally coming to the PS3 in America via the PlayStation Network. Battle Fantasia was developed by the same team who made BlazBlue and Guilty Gear. Also, despite popular opinion in the comments section, I do not hate BlazBlue or Battle Fantasia. I just hate that BlazBlue was released as a full retail $60 game. Well Aksys is looking to correct their mistakes by releasing Battle Fantasia as a downloadable title where I can guarantee it will not retail for more than $20. Well maybe they'll do something crazy like $30 or $40 but I would bet money on a $10 - $20 price point.
Battle Fantasia was released for the Xbox 360 in America last fall where it sold about 45 copies nationwide. Apparently a PS3 version was always planned but "the timing wasn't right" according to Aksys games. Well apparently the timing is now right and thankfully the game is being released on the PSN. The PSN is the perfect place for 2D fighters in my opinion. Street Fighter 2 Turbo set the bar in my opinion for 2D fighters. Hell why stop there, Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection came out on the PSN over 2 years ago and proved that 3D fighters could become extremely successful on the PSN.
Fighters are great games. I love them, and they're one of my favorite genres. But in this day and age they have no right retailing for $60. And before the comments section explodes the same thing applies with sports games, although sports games don't really work as a downloadable experience. Fighters on the other hand are perfect on the PSN, and are perfect retailing for about $20. Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD, and Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection, those are the games that did it right. Thankfully Battle Fantasia will follow their lead.
I'm serious when I say that I'm going to buy this game for Watson alone. He's awesome.
PlayStation Store update for the week of July 9
This week featured a rather decent PlayStation Store update, although only one thing is a must buy. This week's update featured a few new games in Buzz Jr. Robo Jam, Battlefield 1943, Spec Ops: Stealth Patrol, and XS Junior League Soccer. Stealth Patrol and XS Soccer are both PS1 classics that are mediocre at best. My recommendation is to pass on both of them. Buzz Jr. Robo Jam is another collection of mini-games using the PS3 Buzz controllers that came with Buzz PS3. If you have a 5 year old who wants to play crappy mini-games than by all means spend $5 on Buzz Jr. Robo Jam, but for everyone else don't even bother.
Battlefield 1943 is the highlight of this week's update, although it's had its share of problems since its release. In typical Battlefield fashion when Battlefield 1943 launched in Wednesday on the XBLA it was met with server issues and people had trouble playing it. To be honest I have no idea how the PSN version is fairing due to the fact that I did buy Battlefield 1943 on XBLA, due to the fact that I think first person shooters handle better on the 360 controller. That and all my friends got the XBLA version. Battlefield 1943 is a lot of fun and looks amazing, here's hoping the servers stabilize and people are able to hop in and out of games easy.
Oh, and the Motorstorm Pacific Rift Adrenaline Expansion came out for $10. If you don't already have Pacific Rift you must either hate racers, not own a PS3, or be crazy, because Pacific Rift is one of the best racers ever. I love Pacific Rift and recommend the two expansion packs to everyone, they're awesome.
The retail releases for the week of July 14
Man, what a time to start this weekly segment eh? Last week's only release was a mediocre baseball game, and this week's only release is a mediocre football game. My apologies to anyone who likes EA football games but they've been the same for 5 years now. Ever since 2K went down EA's football games have gone to hell and I've resorted back to NFL Blitz on the Dreamcast for my football needs.
This week will see the release of NCAA Football 10 on every console imaginable, and that's about it. I love college football, but EA can't make a good football game to save their life. Well that's a bit harsh, they can't make a good football game worth $60 to save their life. There, that's more like it.
Hey, what are you doing after the game?
There was no major news this week
Well, there was no actual news worth ranting about this week besides Battle Fantasia. There was a lot of minor news however, which leads to the one week return of B3yond the Tabloids.
B3yond the Tabloids
PSP Go pre-orders have begun. Huzzuh!
BioShock 2 was delayed until 2010. Damn. It seems all of the great games minus Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2 are being delayed until 2010.
Ghostbusters costume pack is coming to Little Big Planet this week. Seriously Media Molecule, I used to love you so much. Now I couldn't be more uninterested in Little Big Planet. It's just one cash-in after another. WE WANT LEVELS DAMMIT! I mean come on, why couldn't you at least make a proton pack?
Fight Night Round 4 will be adding button punches by free DLC. All the crybabies are finally getting their way. Although to be honest when I eventually get FNR4 I'll want to rotate between the analog sticks and buttons.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 will tone down the violence. Apparently people are pissed but as long as the game is fun who the hell cares? How many times do you need to see the decapitation finish before you grow bored of it?
Singularity has been delayed until 2010 because Activision doesn't want it to compete with Modern Warfare 2. What the hell is Singularity?
Disgaea 3 will be getting Trophies. The Robbins Brothers can die happy.
Battlefield 1943 servers don't suck anymore. Huzzuh! That game is an absolute steal at $15 by the way.
Fallout 3 downloadable content packs will be coming in September. PS3 fans get phucked again. When's the alien DLC pack come out again? That's the only thing that'll make me play Fallout 3 again. Aliens = Awesome.
Here's the debut trailer of Mod Nation Racers, the next game in Sony's Play Create Share lineup.
The One Man Water Cooler~!
This week I'd like to present a plan that I think Sony should talk full advantage of. I would like to state before I begin that this is not 100% my idea but I would like to iterate it because it's an awesome idea.
I believe that with the inevitable launch of the PlayStation 3 Slim that Sony needs to make a change regarding on what comes with a PS3 when it launches. This plan is assuming from the beginning that PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility is coming back to the PlayStation 3 which at this point I believe will be coming even if it isn't until later this year. I think that Sony needs to give gamers a crash course on the past 15 years of Sony's gaming history. I believe that upcoming PlayStation 3's should come packed with PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 titles downloaded and installed to the hard drive from the start.
Now obviously it can't be every game as that'd be suicide, it also can't be a lot of games as you don't want to start filling up the hard drive. You also don't want to give away too much of a good thing as this whole backwards compatibility is easy cash for Sony and whatever developers decide to put their games up for download. I believe that all PlayStation 3's starting with the Slim should ship with 3 PS1 games installed on the hard drive and 3 PS2 games installed on their hard drive, as to promote the history of Sony. Hell, put the logos of the games on the box of the PS3, to show that you're buying a piece of history with your PS3.
Now there are hundreds of games that COULD come installed onto the hard drive. I could easily name a dozen games like Final Fantasy 7 that would be PERFECT for coming installed on the PS3 when purchased. The only problem is that Sony does not own Square Enix and would probably have trouble getting the rights to FF7 to put on the box. So for the sake of avoiding licensing issues I'm sticking with games from companies that Sony OWNS. Spyro would be perfect, but Sony doesn't technically own Insomniac.
For the PS1 games I would put Gran Turismo *or GT2*, Crash Bandicoot *or 2 or 3*, and Syphon Filter *or 2 or 3*. Now IF, and that's a big IF, Sony were able to put ANY PS1 game regardless of who developed it I would chose between Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, and Resident Evil: Director's Cut.
For the PS2 games I would chose God of War *or God of War 2*, Shadow of the Colossus, and Gran Turismo 4 *or possibly 3*. For the PS2 games I'm not worrying so much about putting non-Sony developed games because there are a lot more "household names" on the PS2 than there were for the PS1 developed by Sony themselves. Sony doesn't have to worry about licensing from themselves. Hell if God of War is too violent because of the M rating put one of the Jak and Daxter games or Sly Cooper games.
This plan is absolutely brilliant to me. Yes Sony will miss out on the $6 or so for each game since they will come free on the PS3 but how cool will it look in stores with each PS3 box promoting its own 15 year history by including 6 or so free games from their rather impressive past?
Imagine if your brand new PS3 Slim, retailing for $300, came with Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Syphon Filter, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, and Gran Turismo 4 installed on the box? That seems like a pretty awesome deal to me. Hell, continue the trend of packing in new games and throw in Metal Gear Solid 4 as well.
Holy shit.
Team up with Konami and offer the ultimate Metal Gear Solid PlayStation 3 Slim bundle.
Imagine a brand new PS3 Slim packed in with Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid VR Missions, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Metal Gear Solid 4. That would be one of the coolest bundles ever in my opinion, and Sony could make it happen.
Let's keep rolling with the idea. Tell me that a PS3 Slim bundle including Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8, FF9, Final Fantasy 10, FF11, and FF12 installed on the PS3 out of the box wouldn't sell gangbusters. It's even a great way to promote FF13 even though it's not PS3 exclusive in America. That's an incredible idea in my opinion and this is coming from the man who can't stand Final Fantasy.
You see where I'm getting at. The PlayStation brand has a rich history and I think Sony could use it to their advantage. Put all of the Resident Evil's including RE5 on a PS3 Slim, call it the Resident Evil PS3 bundle. Do it with Metal Gear, do it with Final Fantasy, do it with whatever. I think it's a cheap and easy way for Sony to get some good publicity and cash in on people's nostalgia. For the sake of time I'm going to stop ranting but holy crap do I think this is a million dollar idea. The possibility of doing bundles like this is there, Sony just needs to get off their ass and do it.
The 411mania Empire~!
The Full Circle by Joe Roche. Nintendophiles by Theo Fraser. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly by Armando Rodríguez. Armando has been making some attempts in his column to win the B3yond team over. Armando, I'm being honest with you, the B3yond team can be bribed very easily. How the hell do you think I got Vince and Shaq? 411 Games Top 5 by Todd Vote. Needs more Vince Offer. 411 Fact or Fiction Games by Drew Robbins. Why hasn't Drew adapted the picture of Cousin Oliver that I gave him? I mean it fits his personality perfectly.
Signing Off!
That's it for me everyone. Over the past week I purchased and have been playing the PS2 cult-hit Ico, and I must say it's pretty good. It's not one of the best games ever, but it is good. The graphics definitely leave something to be desired, but it was one of the very early PS2 games *even started out as a PS1 game* so I'll cut it some slack. Over the next week I'll be starting up Shadow of the Colossus again, which is probably one of my favorite PS2 games. I can be reached via the comments section below, on the PSN as Fester, or by email at marksalms@gmail.com. I read everything you guys send my way and appreciate it. I'll be back in 7, cya!
"Disgaea 3 will be getting Trophies. The Robbins Brothers can die happy."
I'm not sure it is possible for me to be any more apathetic to Disgaea...or even trophies for that matter.

You're lying threw your teeth cousin Oliver. Don't make me pull out the picture.

The trophy patch requires you to start an entirely new game. I'm not sure how many people who've put 100 hours into the game will want to do that.

Why the hell are you complaining? You DON'T even play the game! For the love of God, you are complaining about something that means nothing to you. Go back and try to top 70,000 points and quit wasting our time.
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 14, 2009 at 09:38 AM
that's actually a really good idea about the preinstalled software... Hell, Sony could set it up on their own website like Dell does and let you "build your own PS3" (imagine a full catalog of PS1 & PS2 games to choose from, far more extensive than those on PSN and you get to pick say 5 PS1 games and 3 PS2 games, but can pick ANY 5 and ANY 3....)
Posted By: Madcapunlimited (Guest) on July 14, 2009 at 09:59 AM
Battle Fantasia was slow as shit and played horridly. That was a game I was not proud to purchase at all. Reminded me of Arcana Heart. Not a good thing.
BlazBlue on the other hand...
I just don't get the hatred for the fighter's price point. It's the same as any other game that has been developed and produced, and in the case of BlazBlue, SF IV, and KOF XIII I would venture to say they deserve to be sold at the $60 price initially even more so than other games in different genres. And comparing a remake of Street Fighter II to BlazBlue is like comparing Halo to Doom. They came out at different times, have different mechanics, and play a LOT differently. But they are both FPS games, right?

Why are you telling me something I already know?
Posted By: Drew Robbins (Registered) on July 14, 2009 at 11:08 AM
I like the where you are going with the preinstalled games. However, I'd much rather them just give a rebate card for those titles instead, if they were to do something of that nature.
That way, if I was going to remove the hard drive the moment I bought the system (Like I did) to put in a bigger hard drive, you aren't missing out on anything. I mean, you can always back up the ps3 immediately, then remove the hard drive, then install the new hard drive, then install the back up, but that adds a lot of extra steps.
Or just give the new owner of a PS3 a 50 dollar PSN card, and let them download what they want. That would work the best to me.

oh and the blatant hypocrisy of this
"Why the hell are you complaining? You DON'T even play the game! For the love of God, you are complaining about something that means nothing to you."
made me lol. How many times have you trolled the 360 colummns, David? Not to mention that he is stating something that is true and a concern of some gamers.
Posted By: spacefight (Guest) on July 14, 2009 at 11:32 AM
How exactly is Rod's statement a complaint Dave? He said the trophies will require you to restart the game, and asks how many with hundreds of hours already in it are going to want to restart.
Quit trying to start shit where there is no shit to start. There was no complaint in what Rod said.

"Why the hell are you complaining? You DON'T even play the game! For the love of God, you are complaining about something that means nothing to you. Go back and try to top 70,000 points and quit wasting our time."
LOL - two guesses why Dave's not complaining about being forced to restart if he wants Trophies from the game.
Posted By: Rod Oracheski (Registered) on July 14, 2009 at 11:47 AM
He is complaining that people will need to restart their games.
NEWS FLASH----There has YET to be a trophy patch, for a previously released game, that didn't require you to start from scratch. Since that is common knowledge for people that actually play PS3 games, his point is a bit redundant. Therefore, it sounds like someone is trying to rain on our parade.
If you actually like playing Disgaea 3, it isn't going to matter either way. So, why state the obvious? When you say "I'm not sure how many people..." That usually means you aren't part of that circle, and your opinion is null and void.
Posted By: David (Guest) on July 14, 2009 at 12:33 PM

Says the guy who feels his opinion on anything is valid, no matter what the topic is? Come on Dave, admit it. You had no grounds to attack that statement. Whether he is in this circle you are talking about, or not, there was still no complaining at all from Rod, just an observation, and you said he was complaining...
Welcome to Troll town, population: Dave.

Why do people care about Disgaea so damn much?
I wasn't even going to mention it in my column this week until I decided it was a nice opportunity to take a shot at Derek/Drew.
Out of all the offensive and interesting things I wrote about we get Disgaea fights lol???

Warhawk ring a bell?
I know it's tough for you to be right about even one thing when you get ranting, but try...okay?
And honestly, according to SiliconEra this is what happens when you patch the game: "After you install this patch your previous save data will be unusable."
That's a bit more than just having to restart if you want Trophies - that's having to restart, period.

It's more of a strategy game than an RPG, you should try it :p

I will play Battle Fantasia if I am able to chainsaw adorable bunnies with hats in half!
Posted By: Drew Olson (Registered) on July 14, 2009 at 04:21 PM
Yeah Rod is right, its more strategy than RPG which can be kind of fun...but Disgaea has possibly one of the most annoying senses of humor of all time. And the voice acting is like nails on a chalkboard.
Posted By: Drew Robbins (Registered) on July 14, 2009 at 04:24 PM
I think a voucher to download 3 free games from each system would be a smarter idea. You don't want a bunch of M rated games installed on a system that you're trying to get parents to buy for their kids. Let people pick which games they want from PSN.
I just hope that the price drop for the Slim is significant, because I'm absolutely sick to death of hearing people bitch and moan about the current prices. If Sony can't get it down to either $249 or $299 at most, they shouldn't even bother.

""NEWS FLASH----There has YET to be a trophy patch, for a previously released game, that didn't require you to start from scratch."
Warhawk ring a bell?"
To be fair you did have to restart everything in WarHawk. Everything except the Trophies for your ranks. But any of the ones involving weapons, the expansion packs, kills, flag captures, ect required you to do it again.

Like Nintendo did with the DSi? You get $10 or whatever worth of 'cash' and buy some games with it.

You might add that Warhawk is an exception to the rule, not the rule itself. Is there any other games? From my experience, companies that release a trophy patch after the game's release tend to make you start from scratch. Burnout Paradise, anyone?
I want to try out Battle Fantasia when it is released. Fighters are horrible on using the 360 d-pad. Some people always recommend using an arcade stick. Unfortunately, that isn't really a realistic option. You have to train yourself to use a stick. It takes time, patience, and practice. I just want to enjoy the game. That means the PS3 version will always be superior, in my eyes.

I play SF IV and BlazBlue with no difficulty at all using the 360 controller. The shit about the D-Pad is overhyped and played the fuck out.
Way to troll though. Got me.

Bravo Vince, good call back on the tongue biting whore! I firmly agree that if you haven't purchased both map packs for P.R. your missing out. On that note, you're getting 6+ new tracks with this MotorStorm dlc. What the fuck is with Socom:Confrontation only having one new map with their next dlc. Oh wait it's got snow so that's gonna make up for it. Yeah, I'm probably gonna buy it, but that doesn't mean I can't complain. If anyone says anything differently about NCAA Football '10 than what Marky Mark has said you're just foolish. EAs turned the game into a real pile. Give me 2D Super Tecmo Bowl any day.
Isn't MAG (best name ever) still slated for 2009 delivery? I don't think they've set a date, but that's what their claiming.
Hard drive equipped bundles is a god awful idea. It's going to be 1 game I want to play and 5 I'll play once. Give me hard copies so I can make some money selling them and clear up hdd space. Well maybe I'd like a M.G.S. bundle.

"I play SF IV and BlazBlue with no difficulty at all using the 360 controller. The shit about the D-Pad is overhyped and played the fuck out."
That is my opinion! I own Street Fighter 2' Hyper Fighting was damn near unplayable with the d-pad. That thing is worse than the PSP-1000's d-pad. Why the hell do you think Microsoft released a new controller, with an updated control pad, only in Europe? Huh? Now, you need to stop with your blind fanboyism, it is very tired.
If I was just making stuff up, how are the 360 and PS3 versions of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger fairing?

I bet you're going to cite VGChartz numbers to back up your idea that the PS3 version is outselling the 360 one, right?
LOL - didn't learn anything from that 'Killzone 2 has sold 750,000 copies in the first week' story from three days after it launched, huh?

What the hell are you talking about? I was just asking an open ended question. If anything I was going to say that the LE BB is retelling for over a $100 on many websites; however, I saw the 360 version still retaining at the same price ($59.99).
You can pull two different types of answer. #1) They pressed less copies of the PS3 version. #2) The PS3 version is in higher demand. You can take that in whatever way that you want...
WORDS OF ADVICE---"Never gamble, Rod. You are horrible at it. You are 0 for 3 today."

LMAO - I thought you couldn't find a source less credible than VGChartz but you managed.

I wonder what it'd be if I did a synch. Like I said in reply to one of the many messages you sent me on PSN (along with a friend request - LOL YOU DELUSIONAL BASTARD) it's too bad Sony doesn't have that anywhere near as well-implemented as Achievements are. I haven't synched it in months, and really don't feel any need to.
I don't really see what any of that has to do with your ridiculous fanboyism in any case. Keep deflecting though.

No MAG was always slated for March 2010. MAG won't be this year. But thanks for the positive remarks.
As for everyone else
If we got compensation per comment I would sit around making false claims all day long.

Actually, you remember that Achievement Unlocked where said you were level 4 or something, but you photoshopped the PSN ID out of the picture. You said that you didn't want to share it. Now, you are saying you haven't updated in months. Be consistent with your BS. That is the problem with lying, Rod. You have to remember WHAT you said. :-/ At least your delusions are always good for a laugh.

Mark,
Are you excited? Valkyria Chronicles 2 was announced! Unfortunately for you, it is coming to the PSP.

I don't - and won't, for reasons that seem obvious given your behaviour in this thread - give out the login I use, Man Crush.

Wow! Look how sad you are by doing that? You don't remember? Heh! That is pretty funny! Well, I guess that says a lot about your character, or your lack thereof.

Hey Man Crush, though I know you're the master of only remembering what you want to - why don't you go back and re-read what I posted alongside that PSN login pic? You know, the part about you stalking me and threatening my wife and two-year old - necessitating me making things private.
Don't remember that? What a shock.

What are you talking about? You have gone off the deepend. You need to make things up now?

Mark, where did you get a March date release for Massive Anus Gauge? I don't disagree, nor would I be surprised if it wasn't July of next year. But there really haven't been any reports from Sony or Zipper on a release date. Which is smart by them. I was just wishful thinking for a Holiday release this year.

Yeah Bell actually March is just a rumoed release date since Sony said a long time ago "MAG will be out before our fiscal year ends" which is March 2010.
But who knows.
