411 Games Fact or Fiction 09.28.09: Manhunt 2, Pro Wrestling, N64 Controller, PSP, More
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 09.28.2009

Looks like there was plenty of discussion last week over which controller was the best – the Xbox 360's or the PS3s. Good points on both sides and we're glad you voiced your opinions as they were certainly fun to read. Now it's on to this week's edition which includes another controller topic. Joining us this week is Rod Oracheski of Achievement Unlocked and Chris Lansdell our resident Games and Wrestling connoisseur in this all Canadian edition. I'll be your host as usual, so let's get to it!

Round 1: With price drops to all three consoles, the holidays should sprout solid sales numbers for all three makers.

Rod Oracheski: FACT - Despite all the economic woes, people still spend really stupidly during the holidays and we're going to see sales take off in the last few months, just like always. The one I'm wondering about the most is Nintendo's Wii. They didn't drop the Wii price point all that much, so will they get the same bump that Sony and Microsoft enjoyed with their more sizable cuts?

Chris Lansdell: FICTION - But only on a technicality. I believer Nintendo will do well as they always do at Christmas, with their family-friendly unit and price drop. Sony will win a lot of second-system fans, people who are tempted to buy one for their teens/themselves now that it's sub-$300. That's a big psychological drop, and is the price point where I traditionally buy in to a system. Microsoft will do OK, but I think their numbers will disappoint.

Score: 0 for 1

Round 2: Because the controller topic seemed to get people's attention, here's another one.  The N64 controller was the worst console controller ever made.

Rod Oracheski: FACT FICTION - Wait...you meant the Gamecube one, right? No? Then let me change that answer to Fiction because the N64 controller - while it made a whole lot of people go 'huh' when they first saw it - was a great controller. Analog stick, tons of buttons, weird shape, but comfortable to hold...that was one controller that had everything. Can you imagine playing Super Mario 64 back then without that controller? No chance.

Chris Lansdell: FICTION - Gotta go with the Rodster here. The N64 controller is the only one that enabled me to play a game one-handed and win. Sure it was the Mario Raceway on Mario Kart 64, but no other controller was laid out so well. It looked ridiculous, but it worked surprisingly well and some of the third-party offerings were amazing. Not that that should have any bearing. Plus, limited edition GOLD controller!

Score: 1 for 2 - The Gamecube controller, while comfortable as hell was pretty horrible in terms of buttons. C-stick FTL!

[Ed. note. The Jaguar controller WAS indeed atrocious as well...just obsecenly bad!!]

Round 3: If you could somehow get your hands on an uncensored and unaltered version of Manhunt 2 for the Wii, you'd give it a shot.

Rod Oracheski: FICTION - Manhunt is a series that I really don't care for. Reminds me of Hostel or Saw, in a way – gratuitously violent as a means to attract attention and get some sales. Tried the first game and just abandoned it. Gamers are constantly complaining that we want our hobby to be taken seriously, but we flock to garbage like that? C'mon guys, you can't honestly support a game with zero redeeming qualities like that, then complain when the media says this hobby glorifies violence.

Is there a double standard there, as the two things I compared it to are both movies - a medium that's widely accepted as 'okay' for the mass market? Sure - but that's life. Movies have been around longer, and they've gone through the 'you're destroying our youth!' movement (that seems to hit every single entertainment medium) and come out the other side. They dealt with this kind of thing during the 'blaxploitation' days, and now the medium's mature enough to avoid notice. It's the 'if they were going to destroy the youth, they'd have done it by now' complacency that saved D&D and rock and roll. Games don't have that history in their side yet, so maybe we should hold off on the snuff films until we're 'safe' enough for Joe and Jill America to not worry about anymore.

Chris Lansdell: FICTION - There was a time when this would have been a strong FACT. Long-time gamers will remember Thrill Kill, a Playstation 4-player fighter that featured characters like a cannibal, a mad scientist and a dominatrix. I am not kidding. It was gory, it was explicit, and it never got officially released. You only got a copy if you were lucky enough to know someone who worked with (I believe) EA. I had a copy, and I loved it at the time.

With an 8-year-old of my own now, I am very conscious of the tat being put out and called "entertainment". I have not played a GTA game since they stopped being cartoony, nor have I played any of the other games glorifying crime sprees. I don't get on my moral high horse and preach about it, I just choose not to play. Manhunt is orders of magnitude worse than GTA and you'd pretty much have to pay me to play it.

Score: 2 for 3

SWITCH

Round 4: You still think the PSP is lacking quality games.

Chris Lansdell: FACT - I do a fair bit of traveling, and I thought I'd check out the PSP for something to do while I was on long plane rides. Or short ones. I knew that I wanted MLB 09 The Show, but I wasn't sure if anything else on the system was worth having. Not really, as it turns out. Sony seems to have fallen into the trap that Sega fell into with the Game Gear: thinking "portable" has to be synonymous with "poor". There are some OK games on the system, but there's nothing on here that you just NEED to have like there is on the DS, and like there was on each iteration of the Gameboy.

Rod Oracheski: FACT - Outside of Chains of Olympus there really isn't another title that jumps into my head as a 'must have' title to recommend to someone, and even that one is pretty short. No doubt there are some others, depending on the genres the person likes, but the PSP's library continues to be populated with games that I just don't care about. Sony continues to drop the ball with the PSP, and third parties avoid the heavily-pirated machine - though the PSP Go, and some Sony "incentives" in the background, might well change that.

Score: 3 for 4

Round 5: Bases Loaded (NES) > Baseball Stars (NES) (Loaded is better)

Chris Lansdell: FACT - The fact that I played Bases Loaded and not Baseball Stars means I can only really answer this one way. Bases Loaded was the first baseball game I played that didn't drive me insane within 2 innings, so it has to be good for something...

Rod Oracheski: FICTION - Bases Loaded was fun (and the Jersey batters will always have a place in my heart) but Baseball Stars offered up so much more. It was the first game I remember with a create-a-player, and that was absolutely HUGE for me. Renaming teams, trading players, a 'sort of' salary cap system - what didn't the game have? You could even level your players - a lifetime before it became popular to put RPG elements into other genres.

Score: 3 for 5 - Jersey was the shit. My favorite team no doubt with Paste and his 60 Hrs and Bay's follow-up power and 30 + dingers. Good call on Baseball Stars' features though Rod.

Round 6: You'd buy a remodeled WiiWare version of Pro Wrestling

Chris Lansdell: FICTION - Tecmo World Wrestling? Absolutely. Pro Wrestling? Not so much. I mean, it had Hayabusa in it ( not THE Hayabusa, but still) and it was fun for its time...I guess it would depend how it was remade and by whom. But Tecmo? I'd by it unaltered!

Rod Oracheski: FICTION - Nostalgia's great and all, but unless that 'remodel' comes with Aki making it into an all-new 3D wrestling game, then I'm going to pass. The game was great for its time, but there wasn't much there if you really think about it. With the exception of of 'A WINNER IS YOU' this one didn't really have that much of an impact on me.

Final Score: 4 for 6 - A winner is always me. Don't forget that Games staff =)

Now we want to know what you think...Fact or Fiction? Let us know!

The N64 controller was awesome, one of the best.

Don't get me started on that ridiculous c-stick for the GameCube, ugh. The rest of the controller was amazing though.

I'm the opposite on the controller question, I loved the Cube's controller but the N64's controller always felt horrible to me. Everything about it was clunky, and when you were a tiny young man (as I was) upon the system's release, you had to hold it funny for joystick games.

The Atari jaguar and the Atari 5200 had terrible controllers. N64's really isn't that bad.

and yes it is a shame that Sony keeps dropping the ball on the psp. All that potential...

Count me in for liking the Gamecube controller as well. It seems to get a lot of criticism, but I never had a problem with it and actually found it pretty damn comfortable.

Lack of quality games on the PSP?

I have sneaking suspicion that the writers lack a realistic sense of what is quality. I guess you haven't really played your PSP. This are quality games that were originally released on the PSP, and they aren't ports.

-DarkStalkers Chaos Tower
-Prinny: Can I Really Be A Hero
-Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins
-Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
-Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories
-Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories
-Metal Gear Acid
-Metal Gear Acid 2
-Wipeout Pure
-Wipeout Pulse
-Metal Gear Sold Portable Ops
-Patapon
-Patapon 2
-Loco Roco
-Loco Roco 2
-Ratchet & Clank Size Matters
-God of War: Chains of Olympus
-Tekken Dark Resurrection
-Killzone Liberation
-Jeanne d'Arc

That is just what I came up with off the top of my head. That doesn't include the superior ports of Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, Disgaea 2, etc. But, I guess you guys do not really know anything about the PSP; so, I shouldn't expect much from either you when it comes to opinions on that system.

I like the N64 gamepad. It was very comfortable and it had a lot of buttons to use.

The GC gamepad is okay but the D-Pad is terribly too small and the C-stick was poorly designed as your thumb could slip off the stick very easily.

The worst gamepad by far is the Dreamcast gamepad. The DC had great games but the gamepad was horribly uncomfortable and the D-pad and analog stick were very imprecise.

Dumb sounding french game

My point, and I do have one, is that its almost grasping at straws to try and list a HUGE library of quality PSP games.

It almost seems like trolling, I know, but had to call you out on that one buddy. I will let you finish but the Atari Lynx was the best portable system of all time.

"Was the N64 controller the worst"????? WTF, u gotta be kidding me! It was an awesome pad, especially for shooters like the legendary Goldeneye!

Sorry, but the Gamecube controller isn't even close to being the worst console controller ever made, in fact it's a very good controller. Not great for 2D games admitedly but fine for everything else.

Seriously, when your going to say "worst console controller ever made" you need to look at stuff like the Atari Jaguar controller.

Jeanne d'Arc's a great game - recommended to any RPG fan.

PSP's definitely lacking in quality games, though. Still worth it for the emulators.

Worst controller ever?

That would have to be a toss-up between the equally bad Intellevision and Colecovision controllers.

I'll never forget the frustration of trying to hit the right number to change the locks in the higher (faster) levels of Mouse Trap.

I'd take the palm-blister inducing 2600 controller to them any day...

The NES and SMS controllers were uncomfortable, but a HUGE step forward... and began the evolution of most modern controllers.

I really like the Gamecube controller as well. I guess most games the trigger thing I only used it to hit a certain direction, not worried about accuracy. The Z thing was kinda annoying in that it was so tiny, but everything else was great. Plus it was probably one of the more comfortable controllers I can think of.

And speaking of Z triggers, putting that thing on the N64 one was great.

Thrill Kill was pirated. I had some friends that had it. The only issue w/it was that the music files were missing. So he added some rob zombie to it and it was ready to go. Just like everything that is so very taboo, it wasn't very good. Thrill Kill eventually evolved into the Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style. Which was actually a little better due to the music tracks. Game still sucked.

I've got to side with David on this. I think that there is a negative internet sentiment towards the PSP that has let a lot of people forget that there is a back catalogue of strong titles available for it. The two GTA's, although technically imited, were a long way from "piss poor". They sure as hell aimed a lot higher than CTW, and were the better games for it.

True, the best PSP games are sequels or part of an established brand, but Nintendo are a hell of a lot worse in terms of putting out sequels, spin offs, or re-releasing exsting games. (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, blah blah blah). Hell, the whole company has built itself upon that. So lets not call the kettle black just yet.

I really think the whole piracy issue is a misconception - It seems a hell of a lot easier to dowload files off PirateBay onto an R4 cartridge on DS than to tinker around with all the PSP firmware and risk bricking the hell out of the PSP... The fact is that the DS sells in spite of this as it has successfull marketed itself as something each member of the family can own and enjoy. The PSP hasn't. Whether or not the Go! will change this remains to be seen.

"SequelsSequelsSequelsSequelsSequelsSequelsSequels"

"SoWhatSoWhatSoWhatSoWhatSoWhatSoWhatSoWhatSoWhatSoWhat"

You make it sound like the question was talking about new games or something. Go read the question again. Also, just because a game is a sequel doesn't mean it isn't a quality game.

And those Kanye jokes were funny last week, but they're way too overblown. Go find another meme to rape.

Oh Dave...how did I know that we'd see the infamous "fanboy list" when I saw someone bash the PSP.

Seriously, did you just pull that off of the Sony PR website for "great exclusives" on the PSP?

If a system is actually "good," you probably wouldn't be able to list all of its good games in a small comment on a internet column...

The Jaguar controller was pretty damn wretched!

Dissidia was a great game for the PSP. It's surprisingly deep, and can absorb many hours. Same thing with MGSPO and Crisis Core. Haven't played too much other stuff, outside of FFT.

There definitely isn't a huge number of great PSP games, but for a guy like me who typically doesn't buy a lot of games, it's fine.

Seriously the Atari Lynx? I swear any credibility you tried to build against mocking the psp went down the drain with that comment.

I also liked the Gamecube controller, though it certainly wasn't perfect. For me, the worst controller was the original X-Box controller, since it was so big you had to climb aboard to use the damn thing.

Basewars is a NES baseball game I'd rather play that either of those. But come on, robots playing baseball and fighting for bases? Psh, can't beat that. Plus, blowing robots up with a good beaning.

And as for wrestling games, I'd rather have a Wiiware AKI game, or at least a wiiware Fire Pro.

I think the sad part of that isn't the "originality" or "sequelness" of those games but the fact that you can name 3 DS games for each of those that are at least as good. That's why the PSP has been and will continue to lag in sales. When a system has such a smaller library than its competition (especially when, as is the case with the PSP, that system came out FIRST) it almost always trails it in sales.

It's almost like Sony didn't actually register exactly WHY the PS1 and PS2 were such successful systems.

Little League World Series was my go-to baseball game on the NES. In no other game could a bloop single still result in an out if the poor fat kid was running.

if you want to talk about controllers . how bout having the companies put 2 controllers in with the game system. greedy bastards

Posted By: Guest#3732 (Guest)  on September 28, 2009 at 02:29 PM

1- if you didn't like the gamecube controller, you didn't appreciate the Day of Reckoning games and thus you suck at life.

2- The intellivision w/the slip in cards and number pad that was impossible to push the numbers on (as well as those finger nail breaking side buttons) was the worst controller ever. period. You guys are too young to remember this one though.

3- Pro Wrestling was awesome. King Slender. The Amazon. F'n STARMAN!!!! It was the first game I bought for the NES and to this day I still love it.

"The worst gamepad by far is the Dreamcast gamepad. The DC had great games but the gamepad was horribly uncomfortable and the D-pad and analog stick were very imprecise."

Uh, no. Try playing any fighting game on the DC and you'll see how ultra precise the pad is, and play Sonic Adventure to see how precise the analog stick is. The DC is a very good controller in terms of functionality.

Looks though, yeah, it sucks.

You guys have obviously never played Monster Hunter 2 on PSP! Its the best game ive played in years!! Check it out!!

i have very fond memories of pro wrestling NES, but even back then i hated how it played. they should release it for free wiiware. i agree with a few other comments about putting out some of the great AKI N64 wrestling games instead. How about some Virtual Pro 2? Still what I consider the greatest wrestling game of all time, to me at least.

I support David here. Stop the PSP hate. I was a hater back in the PSP 1000 days, but I picked up a PSP Slim and have loved it. Quality game does not mean "original."

I have played GTA, Castlevania, MLB etc. on consoles, but having great-looking portable versions rocks! Some of these games you guys qualify as sub-par console ports are actually original games.

Just recently, the Resistance PSP game is far better than its console big bros. Dissidia and Soul Calibur are the two best portable fighters I have played. LocoRoco is still charming.

And you cannot deny what Monster Hunter is doing in Japan. Stop reciting the same junk and give PSP a try!

"They didn't drop the Wii price point all that much, so will they get the same bump that Sony and Microsoft enjoyed with their more sizable cuts?"

The Wii also didn't start out at near $700 so they had a lot less room to move down. Considering it's the first price cut it should have a bit more of an impact because of that. And if you're in the States the sub $200 price tag also perks interest (it's $219 in Canada--lame)

The N64 pad was awesome except the wearing-away stick. Cube pad is also awesome but the d-pad is too small for some games like say THPS.

Nintendo has never made a bad controller ever, and yes, I'm including the Virtual Boy controller as well.

Xbox controller before they made it smaller was the worst I used.

I agree with Brad. Awesome controller, horrible C stick.

And yeah, PSP is still lacking enough great games.

And David, that list can't compare to Kirby Canvas Curse, Meteos, Advance Wars DS and Days of Ruin, 4 Phoenix Wright games, two Prof. Layton games, Mario and Luigi 3, Scribblenauts, 3 Castlevanias, Metroid Prime Hunters, Megaman ZX 1 and 2, The World Ends With You, NSMB, Tetris DS, Phantom Hourglass, Nintendogs, Legendary Starfy, Retro Game Challenge, Rhythm Heaven, Wario Ware Touched, Star Fox Command, Mario Kart DS, Henry Hatsworth, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, Dragon Quest Rocket Slime etc.

I am not even saying that PSP is better than DS, just that PSP does not suck as much as the internet fanboy narrative would have one believe!

Posted By: Guest#4577 (Guest)  on September 29, 2009 at 12:28 AM

The N64 pad worked better with Sin and Punishment than the Wii classic controller did. For sheer build quality (or lack of such), I'll pick the Amiga CD32's joypad as the worst I've ever had my hands on.

Oh, and if you're talking about a Wiiware remodelling of Virtual Pro Wrestling, I say "Fuck Yeah!". I bought a cheap second hand copy of Smackdown: Here comes the Pain, played an elimination chamber match consisting of the Smackdown Six, and realised that it still fell short of the AKI N64 stuff.

Lastly, the PSP. While I agree that the PSP has some goodies, I still maintain that the PSP went nearly a year without a legit >8/10 game (Hell, it barely had any "3 months worth of double page adds inside front cover" 8/10 games). Rock Band: Unplugged and Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny were the first PSP games that I've bought since Chains of Olympus, Space Invaders Extreme and Patapon 1.

The N64 controller was awful...still can't stand the thing to this very day. (Actually I can say that for the whole system, but this was the only system that consistently gave me headaches with almost every game)

On the baseball games...Stars much better than Loaded but Baseball Simulator 1.000 trumps them all for quality NES gaming. Season mode, powerups can be turned on or off. You can pick your teams and then edit them quite a bit. I wonder what happened to Culture Brain. They put together some nice sleeper games for the Nes and SNES.

Finally, a WiiWare version of Pro Wrestling would be okay for nostalgia reasons...but it would need some seriously revamping in controls and graphics. But the original characters were some of the better thought out personalities for an early wrestling game.
