411 Games Fact or Fiction 10.05.09: Super Mario World vs. Sonic, Gamecube, Super Street Fighter IV, More
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 10.05.2009

After being on the sidelines, Alexandra Pusateri returns to Fact or Fiction as she'll face off against me in a loser leaves 411 match-up...no, just kidding but that would be kind of fun wouldn't it?

Ok let's get to it!

1. The PSPGo will prove to be successful.

Alexandra Pusateri: FICTION - The price, coupled with various problems on the surface, might deter some people from getting the Go. The problem is that it's hard to tell, however, because some people prefer digital versions of games they play. Others like hard copies. Some people want the Bluetooth, some can go without it. We'll just have to see when it comes out. I'm not necessarily rooting for it, though. (Go DS!) Sony should worry about what games are going on the handheld system, rather than the looks and appeal of the system.

Ramon Aranda: FICTION - Honestly I just don't see much from the PSPGo to make me want to pick one up. I do like the new design but I didn't get the original PSP for a reason – not enough games that made me say "aww yeah, I need one of those!". The Go doesn't change that out look for me so I'm going to pass. Will it be successful in terms of sales? I think only marginally as I expect it to do well early on before the novelty fizzles out. I just can't see it doing a whole lot better than the PSP.

Score: 1 for 1

2. You're genuinely excited for Project Natal.

Alexandra Pusateri: FICTION - Maybe it's just me being lazy, but I prefer sitting on the couch and using my hands to control something. If I could actually skateboard, I'd be outside skateboarding, not playing Tony Hawk's Underground with a high score. I play these games because they're exciting and rewarding from my reaction timing and skill. I don't play them because I know how to do them in real life. Motion-control games just aren't fun to me -- unless I'm in the presence of friends who are slightly intoxicated.

Ramon Aranda: FICTION - I'm very intrigued by the possibilities that Natal may bring but in terms of being excited, well not yet. I need to go hands-on with it first and with some real games, not tech demos. Demos can make anything seem great but it's the final product that really shows you what something can do. I do hope developers can come up with some new innovative ideas that can take advantage of the technology but until then, I'll remain a bit skeptical. (It does look awesome though)

Score: 2 for 2

3. Going old school...you thought Super Mario World was a better game than Sonic the Hedgehog.

Alexandra Pusateri: FACT - Super Mario World is one of my favorite games of all-time! Maybe it was just me being a Nintendo kid rather than Sega, but SMW was helluva better game than Sonic -- and the franchise is a little less saturated with shitty spin-offs. And no, those sports games don't count! Sonic games have been coming out far too frequently and far too broken for anyone besides 13-year-old boys to care. What was the original question?

Ramon Aranda: FACT - Oh hell yeah! I'll admit that I really did enjoy Sonic...it was a good game and I played quite a bit of it but Super Mario World is one of the "best platformers of all time!!" (Cue the Kanye West photo). No but seriously, SMW was a huge game, with sharp graphics, a colorful world, plenty of branching levels that allowed you to complete a world in different ways, tons of replay value and more. To this day, I still play it on occasion because it was just that good and let's be honest, it's not one of the highest ranked games of all time for nothing! To me, it was the best Mario 2D game ever.

Score: 3 for 3

SWITCH

4. Midway through the Gamecube's life span, you were convinced Nintendo would not release a new console.

Ramon Aranda: FICTION - Maybe it was because I was always into Nintendo but I honestly never feared that they'd turn in to software developers only. I knew the Gamecube wasn't fairing well in terms of its install base and what not but the system did have some solid games and I felt that the Big-N would have something up their sleeves for the upcoming generation of consoles. To put it mildly, I never lost confidence in Nintendo. Low and behold, they're #1 again.

Alexandra Pusateri: FICTION - I knew Nintendo was going to compete with the next-gen guys, they just needed a gimmick. And they found one. When the Revolution was announced, hardcore Nintendo fans were excited and completely enthralled in the new console. Now look at us, our Revolutions Wiis collecting dust and being used for other purposes. Weapons? Bookends? The possibilities are endless!

Score: 4 for 4

5. You think Super Street Fighter IV is coming out way too soon.

Ramon Aranda: FACT - I love me some Street Fighter IV, but I'd like to enjoy it a little longer before thinking of getting an updated version. I would've been happier if Capcom simply released a downloadable update that gave me the new fighters and some new stages. It's cool though that at least they're pricing it lower so fans' wallets won't take too big of a Sonic Kick.

Alexandra Pusateri: FICTION - Fiction. I love Street Fighter, so I don't mind any well-done Street Fighter games coming out fast. On the other hand, though, I don't want to spend the same price as SFIV for the updated, re-released version. Capcom's pretty good about that kind of thing -- thank God -- which is why Super Street Fighter IV will be lower in price than SFIV, and will have bonuses for those who already own the original. Props to you!

Score: 4 for 5

6. Finally, you'd consider the SNES one of your favorite consoles of all-time.

Ramon Aranda: FACT - Point blank: YES! The system bred some incredible games such as the aforementioned Super Mario World, A Link to the Past (which is still one of my favs), Street Fighter II, Super Mario RPG, Mario Kart and the list goes on and on (props for Actraiser too which I think is very underrated). When the system was first revealed, I knew I had to have it but as soon as they announced that Street Fighter II would be on the system, I made it a point to save my money STAT. During that time, I was seriously considering coercing my folks into helping me buy the SFII arcade cabinet. They of course just looked at me like I was an idiot, but when I saw the alternative, it was a done deal! I also think the SNES Virtual Console titles are the ones I look forward to the most.

Alexandra Pusateri: FACT - Maybe only because of nostalgia, but the SNES shaped my childhood -- much like other gamers -- and, although it is far from being the best technically, it will always have a special place in all of our hearts, particularly those that grew up with the console. I do sometimes yearn for the olden days of imagination and unfixed on making graphics look as realistic as possible, but I know that we're heading in the right direction.

Final Score: 5 for 6 - What's your favorite console?

And that'll do it for this week's Fact or Fiction so we now turn it over to you. Fact or Fiction? Let us know!

Personally, I think the SNES is THE best console of all time....I mean seriously, the orignal nintendo might have been the inventive one and brought back games from the brink of...well, whatever....but the SNES had awesome games, awesome graphics(for its time) and I didnt have to constantly blow into the cartridges or the system. SNES is the best!

Favorite console? N64. The first time I saw Mario walking around in a 3D world, I was blown away. Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark. Great memories.

HELL YEAH! My Vote Is For SNES! Two Words...Super Metroid

SNES was my fav cause It had Killer instinct the best fighter game of all time. Until the N64 came I got the game Killer gold, and The Bond game. Now Gamecube and WII don't have those games.

I love you Alexandra!

SNES will forever be my favourite. Plus that picture used has the light hitting the system in almost the exact same way the light used to hit mine at home. Odd thing to remember, but I do.

SNES. Hands-down. That wasn't just a system, it was a fucking culture--and occasionally a religion, depending on how vicious the playground arguments about the 16-bit wars got--all unto itself.

"During that time, I was seriously considering coercing my folks into helping me buy the SFII arcade cabinet."

Ramon, the worst part of that comment is that I actually KNEW a kid whose dad went in big time on buying a fucking SF2: CE cabinet in '93. He was a San Marino boy whose dear ol' pater was a ridiculously rich car collector; for my buddy's 15th birthday, he got a used arcade version.

Naturally, you'll note that this was around or AFTER SF2 had dropped on the SNES, which makes the entire thing seem all the more absurd.

PSX, hands down.

yeah, personally my favorite is the n64... a sentimental choice... but i'll admit that it hasn't held up all that well.

and if you want to do some old school gaming, the snes is the better place to go. why is that?... still do this day, the best 2d platformers, sidescrollers are on it.

whereas everything that was done well on the n64, hsa been improved on in the next gen consoles. i mean, trying going back to playing goldeneye after playing some call of duty on the ps3.

the only exception i can think of is mario kart 64, which is better than the two recent sequels.

You cant play Plok on an Xbox 360, now can you?

Being that I still have my SNES and play about once every other month I would say SNES is the best of all time. I still have Super Mario All Stars game which has super mario world and mario 1,2 and 3 and My Other Favarite Super Street Fighter 2 :)

I love me some Zelda and Mario64, but I'm going to have to say Playstation.

There were so many original games that came out with that thing that most of them formed the basis for everything that came after it.

Just for example: Tecmo's Deception was brilliant.

And let's just accept that Guitar Hero is a lamer version of Um Jammer Lamy.

I'm bias, but I'd say the NES was my fav, for one key reason.... Mega Man TWO.

Sack this nintendo love-in crap.

The SNES is hard to argue with BUT the PS2 is a good counter argument to the SNES.

Where's the love for Sega Megadrive/Genisis? All I have to say is Altered Beast.

and Golden Axe.

and Sonic.

and Comix Zone.

and Earthworm Jim (first released there anyway).

I'm going with the ps1. Had so many original games out there plus it wasn't as limited as the n64 in terms of hardware. Don't get me wrong the n64 was good but sadly most of it's games haven't aged well with a few exceptions

"2. You're genuinely excited for Project Natal."

I've owned a Wii for some time now and all I can say is I really miss controllers. I'm so sick of motion control and wish all systems would do away with it for good.

I've owned consoles from every company except Microsoft and Turbografix. And I have to say Nintendo is the only company that ever made a game I wanted to play. I got bored with my Segas, Playstations and Game Gears. But I always enjoyed my gameboys, Nintendos and Super Nintendoes. I even enjoyed my buddy's Virtual Boy, after the headaches went away.

SNES was my favorite.

tecmo deception was awesome. game creped me the hell out in one of the cutscenes, had to get up and turn on the lights

Natal. Sounds interesting and as an Xbox owner, I am interested but with reservations. I would hope that developers realize that as a gamer, I am first looking for entertainment and relaxation. Let me stress the last point, relaxation. Pushing buttons to get my team to the Super Bowl on Madden or actually having to pretend to pass, kick, and catch the ball, not to mention run? I can play Madden for an hour or two, I highly doubt that I will do so if I have to be that active the whole time...and I'm in good shape.

Are they even looking at the usage rates of the consoles, the Wii is LOWER than the 360. I would say some of this is the audience and the games, but some of it has to be the motion control.

I can play Fallout for 3 or 4 hours straight but if I had to get off the couch and do it, I'd probably just do something else...like play a game with a regular controller. Or read 411mania.

SNES IS the best console of all time, even under-the-radar games like Best of The Best, Tournament Fighters, and Tuff Enuff were great. On top of that, you got Street Fighter, Super Mario World, MAXIMUN CARNAGE, Killer Instinct and Ultimate Mortal Kombat!!! SNES HANDS DOWN!!!

Posted By: SS87 (Guest)  on October 05, 2009 at 02:39 PM

I lent my SNES to a friend in the late 90s and he lent it to another friend. We all parted ways soon after to go to universities in different cities and I never saw my SNES again. If that was my Game Boy or GameCube I wouldn't really care but to this day I still wonder where my SNES is. It was probably pawned for beer money...

for me the top 5 are

#1 - PS2
#2 - SNES
#3 - Genesis
#4 - PS1
#5 - 360

Dear God: Thank you for releasing the SNES. Words cannot even begin to describe. Just... thanks. Love, Me.

The SNES is easily my favourite console ever, great library especially for RPG/platformer fans. Hell, every genre had some of its best titles to this day on the Super.

Also during the Cube's generation, though it was third, it was the only console of that gen that always made a profit from every sale, unlike the PS2 and especially the Xbox. Though it was nowhere near their finest hour, there was never any real threat that they were going to stop making consoles, especially factoring in their complete domination of the hand-held market.

Don't forget "Combatribes" as a quality under the radar SNES game.

Posted By: Dave (Guest)  on October 05, 2009 at 08:34 PM

I put SNES at #1 as well, but I freely admit lots of that is probably nostalgia. But man, it seemed like there was an absolute incredible SNES title out every month or two. Along with all your big guys (Mario, Zelda, Metroid), you had game after game of new franchises. Starfox, Killer Instinct, Pilotwings, , Donkey Kong Country (I remember EVERYONE being amazed at this game at the time), Mario Kart, Earthbound, etc. Then all those Square RPG's, Street Fighter, Super Star Wars Trilogy, Castlevania, Contra...

"

Completely untrue and unfounded in any fact. There is no source whatsoever that shows this. The gamecube was a financial disaster.
