411 Games Fact or Fiction 10.12.09: Actraiser, Epic Mickey, WWF Superstars/WrestleFest, More
Posted by Ramon Aranda on 10.12.2009
Did you enjoy WWF Superstars and WWF WrestleFest at the arcades? Does the Wii need an original Actraiser game? Do we need a break from new 'Hero' music games? Find out what Jeffrey Harris and Adam Larck think in this week's edition of Fact or Fiction.
Alright here we go, as Jeffrey Harris and Adam Larck are ready to rock and roll, though maybe not with another 'Hero' game....or do they?
Ok let's get to it!
1. Despite not knowing much, you find yourself intrigued by this Epic Mickey.
Adam Larck: FACT - I'm not sure why, but I've taken quite an interest in this game. The concept art that's been shown has looked great, and the premise does sound good. I'm hoping some development footage is released soon just to see what it looks like so far.
Jeffrey Harris: FACT - Oswald The Rabbit and The Blot are back, and they are not happy! I love the concept art and I'm very intrigued with how this game will play. I don't expect it to be like Bioshock or anything, probably a little more like Kingdom Hearts but just darker and slightly edgier. Just all the imagery of the destroyed theme park landmarks and attractions like Epcot look great. I hope all that's a major part of the game.
Score: 1 for 1
2. It's time for the 'Hero' music titles to take a break
Adam Larck: FACT - Although, I'd like to expand on this question and incorporate all music titles. The games are wearing really thin on me. Slight graphical updates with stuff we say in the previous year's version. Where does that sound familiar … oh yeah, it's the Madden syndrome all over again. If the developers really want to focus on something, focus on putting more DLC out for the same game that's already seeing a lot of playing time, not a new $60 game every few months.
Jeffrey Harris: FACT - It's become a joke to me how they seem to be releasing some new Guitar Hero variation every month. Total agreement with Larck, why not just make new DLC's for the same game instead of a stupid, pointless new game every month? A Beatles DLC pack makes more sense to me than an entire game. I get that people love these games and this series, but the amount they are churning out is absolutely ridiculous.
Score: 2 for 2
3. You'd be pretty miffed, if Ubisoft ended up shelving Beyond Good & Evil 2 for good.
Adam Larck: FICTION - For me, it's been too long of a wait to continue caring about this game. I played the first game for a bit, but just never could get into it. It's been almost six years since that release. To be miffed over a shelving of a sequel that is that overdue I would have had to have loved that game. If it gets shelved, it's no big loss for me.
Jeffrey Harris: FICTION - I THINK I agree with Adam Larck . . . but he said FACT . . . meaning . . . I'm not sure. I really don't care about this game series at all. So if it gets shelved, no big loss for me as well. Really don't care.
Score: 2 for 3
SWITCH
4. If Capcom released Street Fighter I on the Virtual Console, XBLA and/or PSN, you'd buy it out of pure curiosity.
Jeffrey Harris: FACT - Definitely. I think the only time I ever saw Street Fighter I was like in the game room of a random hotel I stayed at years and years ago. I definitely would like to buy and play the original just to have it and play the original Street Fighter. This is what the virtual consoles are all about.
Adam Larck: FICTION - I would just demo it out of curiosity before deleting it shortly after. Unless it's a fighting game I've played before and like, most of the DLC fighters I just pass over. I'd be interested just to try it, but, considering Ryu is the only playable character in the game, I wouldn't want to spend money on it just to play once and forget about it.
Score: 2 for 4
5. You'd like to see Actraiser on the Wii.
Jeffrey Harris: FACT - There's definitely potential there. The original is a classic hack and slack side scrolling adventure, and I'd definitely like to play the original on Wii. Not to mention, all the cool storylines you could get out of a modern update considering the original game was a religious allegory since you were essentially playing as God.
Adam Larck: FACT - The first game is already available on the VC, so I'm more focused on a new game here. The rebuilding of the city could really be fleshed out today, and the side-scrolling aspect would still be great. They've given remakes to quite a few other games from that era, why not bring back ActRaiser?
Score: 3 for 5
6. You were a big fan of WWF Superstars and WWF Wrestlefest at the arcades.
Jeffrey Harris: FACT - Big time. I lost so many quarters on Wrestlefest its not even funny. I enjoyed Superstars but didn't get to play it as much. However, I was thoroughly addicted to WWF Superstars on Gameboy.
Adam Larck: FACT - I was actually thinking about Wrestlefest the other day while I was writing a column. I never got a chance to play Superstars at the arcade, as none of the local ones had it. However, I spent quite a bit of time with Wrestlefest. The game was fun to play and the Royal Rumble matches were a great feature. It be nice to see this in some DLC form.
Final Score: 4 for 6
And that'll do it for this week's Fact or Fiction so we now turn it over to you. Fact or Fiction? Let us know!
I played and beat Beyond Good & Evil the game was cool but I dont know why it get so much hype it wasnt that ground breaking. I remember when I was a kid spending summers with my grandparents at Hampton Beach in NH most of my time was spent at the arcade down the street playing WWF Superstars that game was the bomb man those were the days.

Questions were kinda lame this week, I think...but anyway.
Street Fighter 1 has been released on one of the Capcom compilation discs. It's terrible. I would never pay money just for that "game".

I do want to make a correction to question 3. I actually meant FICTION, I just miswrote FACT as my answer. I hope this clears up any confusion on my answer.

Man, did I LOVE Wrestlefest Royal Rumble mode. Always great tossing guys and making pins, still wish someone would put that out somehow on download or something.

I loved wrestle fest probably one of the funnest wrestling games of all time.

I think Rock Band is getting too much flack from being grouped with the "Hero" games. They've released Rock Band 1, 2, and Beatles in the same time span (~2 years) that Activision has released Guitar Hero 3, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero 5, and Guitar Hero: Van Halen. And on the upcoming horizon, Harmonix only really has Lego Rock Band, where Activision has both Band Hero and DJ Hero (if you want to include that game). I too agree that the genre could use some more DLC and less full-priced game releases, but the over-saturation is mainly due to Activision vomiting out games on a seemingly 3-month dev cycle. If it was strictly Harmonix running the genre show, we might have a couple more games, but not as many as Activison has released.

Wrestlefest is/was F'N FUN! No other wrestling game has come close.

Maybe i'm just not understanding the question, but wtf? It's time to put the 'Hero' titles to take a break? Right now the Heroes title's r a licsence to print money, and while as a fan i could do with a break, the fact of the matter is if you were a designer OR a share holder you would basterdize the hell out of it until you get "Hanson Hero" and you would STILL collect massive royalties. The question asks if you think you should shelve the 'Hero' franchise. No. You shouldn't. It is making a guitar load of money. Stop being a prissy ass fan boy. Nuff said.

Superstars and Wrestlefest were both equally great. I probably played more Superstars back in the day, but they both get time in ze old MAME.

I pity anyone who doesn't want a Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Wrestlefest rocked.
As for Beyond Good & Evil, it's the existence of the Imagine series (e.g. Imagine Babies) instead of a BG&E Sequel that I'm pissed off about. That's worse than Activision shitcanning Brutal Legend and Ghostbusters while foisting Spider-Man: Web of Shadows on us.

Street Fighter I is painful to play, I have it on a PSII Capcom Compilation and don't advise it, not even for curiosity's sake. It isn't fun. It wasn't fun when I had it on the Atari ST when it was new but at least then it was the ultimate challenge as it was impossible on a 2 button joystick.
Wrestlefest was awesome and I'd buy that the day it came out on PSN. I easily spent enough on it when it was in the video rental store to justify having.

People, MAME is your friend.

I would like to see original Wrestlefest and/or Superstars on XBox Live. I would buy that in a second.
How cool would it be if they made another game with the same visual and play styles but with current wrestlers?

As a huge Rock Band fan, I think you should clarify whether you are putting it in the same category as * Hero.
Additionally, they created a whole new game for the Beatles, but, thus far, that has been the exception for Harmonix. There is talk of U2 getting a game, to be fair, which I am considerably less enthused about.

How about WWF Raw is War for SNES? That game was pretty fun too. I just wish they had taken Luna Vachon out. There's no way she should be able to hip-toss Yokozuna.

I actually bought a full size 4 player Wrestlefest for $350 last year. It is the best money I've ever spent on anything. 4 player drunk Royal Rumble is a hell of a mess!

wrestlefest was the most arcade fun i could have ever dreamed for. I wish the arcade scene was still alive in the US.

I figured out a way to play Superstars in my arcade for a nickel. There was a way to slide a nickel into the coin slot that would give you a credit everytime.

Street Fighter I was incredible. I loved playing it. Don't know if anyone saw the original arcade cabinets but they came with 2 large orange "buttons", rather than 6 buttons. And, the harder you hit the large button, the stronger the punch or kick.
Yeah, it had faults. You do a move, sit back and wait for it to happen on the screen. But it was challenging and for the time, the graphics were incredible. I was disappointed with the graphics in Street Fighter 2 came out versus the graphics for one. However, the response and gameplay was much better.

One Billion FACTS for WrestleFest...It is the greatest wrestling game i've ever played (got even more fun with it than the epicness known as WWF No Mercy on N64).
Mr Perfect taunts, dropkick and perfect plex were totally reeking of awesomeness and the combo of Hogan/Warrior taking on the L.O.D redefined the word EPIC forever.
If Technos was allowed to release it nowadays in a boxed edition , I would get it immediately !
I take this one over all the previous SD!vs RAW games combined.

As was stated earlier, google MAME to check out Street Fighter, and WWF.
The original SF sucked, hard. The controls are so bad it's nearly unplayable.
Actraiser was only half "hack & slash". The more interesting part was the simulation. I can't believe they never did a proper sequel (actraiser 2 be side scroller only, IIRC).

Agreed, Superstars & Wrestlefest were great. I gotta get MAME to play these again!

SF1 rocked, if you manage to pull of and hit an uppercut, it take of almost 2/3 damage! super cool ...
